Interesting Comparison
It's interesting to compare the aquatic exploits of Teddy Kennedy to those of his brother John, who, in time of war and under heavy enemy fire, after having his PT Boat shot out from under him, swam back to rescue a wounded fellow crewman and swam him to safety, holding him with his teeth.

paradigm shifter
I read this book a few years ago and it opened my eyes forever.Instead of moaning, "What will we do about all of these cars?" I have framed the question, "What the h. is wrong with the United States?"Prior to reading this book, I had only the faintest ideas about what democratic transit planning would look like on a large scale.The answer, Switzerland!

A true account of what happened

Have a Nice Trip!
This book was well organized with accurate and easy-to-read maps. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an alternative to freeway travel. Some of the alternate routes had roads not usually shown on maps. Many of theroutes have yet to be discovered by the masses and are consequently free oftraffic. You have no idea
If you, or a loved one, have had an accident you really want to at least skim this book. It is all too easy to make less of the event, since acknowledging our lack of control over things is not our nature. Much of the damage is not visible, and can carry on a long time. Read more

outstanding!!!
i bought this book for a patient who was having a difficult time working through an accident a year earlier.i've since given or loaned this book out to nearly a dozen others.mr. levine helps the reader feel, well, not alone.he makes all those things we feel as strange to be seen as normal reactions to a non-normal, trauma.he brings the reader in, writing clearly and effectively motivating us, encouraging us to work on ourselves and begin facing life and our fears.it is written very practically offering many excellent, well-founded, effective solutions.absolutely worth the price and probably more!

2 books should be bought
This book was a great help after my accident and I also purchased Car Accident Secrets from Amazon. Both books helped me to heal my mind and my wallet. This book helped me around the problems I was having in dealing with my accident. The other book that I purchased helped me to fight for my rights without a lawyer and settle my claim for a large sum. I am really blessed to have come across both of these books on Amazon.

Good Stuff
I'm moving out of state next year and won't be taking my car with me.Life will probably be more difficult in some ways but it's worth it.When you read about cars and study about them and think about them, it's really unbelievable the amount of death, destruction, and suffering that they've caused over the last hundred years.I've read a lot of anti-car books and this is one of the better ones.It's very thorough while not being too dry or academic like some of the others.Read this book and you'll learn things that will surprise you, like how much money it really costs a society when it uses cars as its main form of transportation.And don't forget perhaps the greatest tragedy of all.Cars gave rise to one of the lowest forms of life that the human race has ever known - the car salesman!

A great book!
This book inspired me to bite the bullet and become car-lite (I live a little too far from town to achieve car-free just yet). It has a lot of exciting examples of how being car-free and car-lite can lead to a more pleasant lifestyle, as well as motivation why it's a good thing to do. Katie's own example is also inspiring, as she has significantly reduced car usage while living in a rural area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a place with legendary winters. Now when I get whiny about putting on my rain suit in the winter here in Northern California and want to jump in my car instead of riding, I think about Katie and her husband biking in the snow of the U.P.

Just Amazing!
If you're even mildly obsessed by the Brooklyn Bridge than you simply must own this book.You'll also enjoy it immensely if you're interested in books of old photos of NYC or Brooklyn.
A captivating look at an underappreciated national landmark
Fastidiously assembled, lovingly written, and captivatingly shot, this pictoral work is nothing short of fascinating. I really have enjoyed it, and was pleasantly surprised with the selected photography and art. It all comes together well and gives the reader a formidable sense of early new york city. A wonder.
Another fine product from Dover publications
Dover publishing has once again put out a quality collection of photographs and prints of New York City. Mary Shapiro's "A Picture History of the Brooklyn Bridge: With 167 Prints and Photographs" is as colossal, magnificent, and substantial as the subject of the book. While it might seem gratuitous to have 167 illustrations of the same structure, the different angles, times of day, events and maintain the audience's fascination. Of course, the older photos and prints that were created during the bridge's construction marvel the reader, and one begins to realize how massive an undertaking the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge really was.

Excellent Work
A really well written account of two of the famous cosntructions of the ancient Romans- roads and aqueducts, though there's a lot more included in this thoughtful book. It also discuses bridges and their construction,as well as inns and stables along the roadways, maps and guidebooks, postal services, and much more. Written for high schhol students but very informative for anyone interested in the topic!

Marvelous Historical Writing
Once again, historian Don Nardo has turned out an information-filled,useful, and just plain interesting study of an aspect of ancient times. His discussion of Roman roads, aqueducts, and bridges is extremely well researched, clearly written, and his many details and anecdotes about how people used these facilities is highly entertaining. Included are discussions of tunnels through mountainsides and the difficulties of keeping them straight, the probelm of people diverting and stealing water from the aqueducts (and the penalities they received when caught), the gangs of slaves who maintained these facilities (with tomb epitaphs they left behind), the scaffolding used by Roman construction workers, and much much more. very good book, ESPECIALLY for the JFK limo chapter
I highly recommend this book for the chapter on JFK's fatal limousine authored by Pamela McElwain-Brown. The rest of the book is good but not great. See what you think.
Out of Control !!!!
I love this book. It's interesting, scary, disturbing, weird, crazy, and fun. I agree that some of the chapters are heavy, especially the film section, but the others are amazing, the ones in the first section especially. The Kenneth Anger chapter is bitchy-hilarious! The intro is good, too, but my favorite chapter is the one about passengers who've been in accidents. One of the best books I bought this year.Recommended for everybody who drives a car.

Spalding gives us something to think about, and departs.
A celebrity is someone whom you've never actually met, but think you know; not just know about, but know. The celebrity press offers us little bits of enticing, patently untrue information about these imaginary friends every day. Part of our agreement with the idea of celebrity is that we believe these things while knowing (after all, we're not crazy) that they aren't true.
A Bittersweet Homage to Spalding Gray
Nearing his 60th birthday in 2001, Spalding Gray was enjoying family life with his wife and two kids, and pondering the next step in his career as a popular monologue performer and writer.
It's really only 56 pages.
When I saw that it was 256 pages I thought it was all going to be stuff that Spalding Gray had written.I was really excited to get this book, thinking that I'd have at least a few days worth of reading to do.Unfortunately only 56 of those 256 pages are actually his work.The forward by Francine Prose goes from pg 17-49."Life Interrupted" goes from pgs 53-92 (40 pages). "The Anniversary" goes from pgs 95-109 (15 pages)."Dear New York City" is pg 113.The rest of the book, pgs 121-255, are eulogies.I would have preferred to just get a skinny little 56 page book of only his work.I realize that this book in essence was to be a dedication to Spalding Gray's life and last days.A way for his friends and family to celebrate his existance in their lives and say goodbye to him.It is a good book and well worth the money, but I would have preferred to just get his writings sans wordy forward and eulogies. ...
