boring
i got into the 7th chapter of this book and i did'nt find it the least bit interesting what so ever.so i put it down,maybe it would have gotten better but as far as i got i was board out of my mind.

A Depressing but Important read
A very intriguing look at mental illness.A very sad story, that is about the death of one family that leads to the creation of another.

A Book That Stays With You
Not many stories, real or imagined, grip a reader like Julie Salamon's "Facing The Wind." I knew where the story would end - or so I thought. The murder is revealed on the book jacket, but the tale really lies in whether or not Bob achieves forgiveness and repentance. Does he deserve the second life he finds with his wife, clearly a damaged soul herself? What responsibility is shared by the doctors who released Bob and failed to monitor his intake of psychotropic drugs? How can we, The Moral Reader, react when a man who murders his family, including a helpless, disabled boy, declares he cannot feel remorse since he was mentally disturbed when the act was committed but at the same time declare his love for the dead?Read more

Some good spy stories amidst a lot of complaining
If this was a collection of short stories it would be great. The disgruntled angle detracts from the stories, and is unsatisfying on its own merits.
One sided view.
As expected, anything coming from Victor Ostrovsky will be negative and against Israel. The book is filled with real events, which the author dramatically changed and turned Israel responsible for them. No wonder this book is banned in Israel. In fact, because of the ban, many people believe that this book has true accounts of Mossad activities. True, the book gets interesting, but the author's motive to run down the Israel for everything happening around the world spoils it. This book is a perfect example of blaming a country and its intelligence agency for your own mistakes. I absolutely agree with J. A Magill's review, this book has no credible source of information, except the fact that Ostrovsky once worked for Mossad.
Highly recommended
This book is best read along with its followup, The Other Side of Deception.The author is/was a true patriot who was honored to serve his country.He reveals many thrilling tales of derring-do, the grinding routine of spycraft and his shock and disillusionment with the personal corruption and immorality of many fellow agents.

Don't Be Scared! It's only the Hormone. Buy This!
This is a sensational action packed thriller, the first novel I have ever read by David Morrell but it certainly won't be the last.Books that you stay up until you literally fall asleep, forget about the TV and leaving the house until you have finished are rare these days but The Protector is one of those elusive literacy gems.Just buy it! Warning though the back cover gives away a bit of the story so don't read it until you've read the book.
An Almost Nonstop Action Thriller with Great Tradecraft
IMPORTANT: Many reviews of this book and the bookjacket notes by the publisher provide unnecessary spoilers regarding the storyline. (I strongly suggest that you refrain from reading them if you have not already done so, as I believe this will increase the impact of the story as it unfolds.) While these details did not destroy my great enjoyment of the book, they did detract from some of the surprises wonderfully plotted by the author. My desire to not detract further from the pleasure of any potential reader is the reason that my description of the plot is very general. However, I have attempted to offset this aspect of the review by a detailed discussion of the reasons for my five star recommendation.
No one does action and suspense better than David Morrell.
It's hard to believe that books like "First Blood" (inspiration for Rambo) and "Brotherhood of the Rose" were written twenty years ago or more, with "Brotherhood" written in 1984. It's even harder to believe that David Morrell has kept up the frantic pace of his novels for this many years without slowing down or missing a beat.Read more

Mr. Carlo...brilliant
A must read for anyone curious about the mafia world, cold hearted killers, and just all around fabulous reading.My hats off to Philip Carlo for writing a materpiece that I just couldn't put down.Page after page he diligently wrote the account of Mr. Kuklinski's life, from enduring sadistic brutality at the hands of his parents, to the very end which brought tears to my eyes.How could you expect Mr. K to be anything else in life other than what he was, after all, his exposure to death and killing was experienced first hand as a child.Thank you Mr. Carlo for being by my side for the last week while I read word for word, the chilling accounts of this killer, always seeing the sensitive side of this man when it came to his family and children.Mr. Kuklinski was a gentle soul, he just wasn't shown enough love and affection in his life.Thanks again.Can't wait to read your other writings.

Couldn't put this down....
Richard Kuklinski, though a killer, was also a very troubled human being. Having two parents that barely raised their children, but used their hands, brooms, etc to punish their children and never nurtured them. To even not take responsibility for killing one of their first born son, Flarian.

I was born in Brooklyn, NY in November 1983 and moved to Hillsdale, NJ (Bergen County) in January 1985.Throughout my life, I heard stories from my parents and grandmother about the Mafia and about the murders that occurred in my old neighborhood.I have always been fascinated by La Cosa Nostra and the Mafia and have read numerous books, watched countless movies and documentaries, and written numerous papers on the topic.After reading all of these different books, I want to commend Mr. Carlo on your work about Richard Kuklinski.This biography was by far the most interesting piece that I have ever read and in my humble opinion, truly captured the essence of a psychopathic serial killer and underworld of the Mafia.

Accurate
As a life long resident of the SW side of Chicago I was able to corroborate many of the accounts Mr. Corbitt gives in Double Deal. Many of the "baby boomers" who were "in the Know" from my area stated that Mr. Corbitt was a very influential gangster associate on the SW side. The man was heavy and dangerous. He killed people,but many were in the line of duty. He also made it very clear in the book that he wasn't an angel.The man gives some very accurate accounts of his life and experiences

If you like "true" gangster stories. . .

Loaded with information you need to protect yourself
I read this book, then I gave it to my daughter to read. I felt it was important for her to have some ideas about personal safety. This book is an eye opener in many respects. Not only does Pat Brown write in an entertaining fashion (makes you want to keep reading), but she also has a deep understanding of her subject matter. In her profession, as she makes clear, it is crucial to have a sense of humor so the job of dealing with the murderer does not drive you to depression. Not only do you get an idea of the mind behind the killer, you get treated to the mind necessary to be a serial killer profiler.
Ignorance Is BlissZero stars if possible
Pat Brown is a virtual fraud looking for easy money.She has no training and has never worked for any law enforcement agency.Her book (and television appearances) prove she knows nothing more than the average lay person and sometimes says/writes things that shows she knows less than the average person on the street.I quote Pat Brown in a recent appearance:The killer is in a rush to leave the area and wash the blood off his clothes."Anyone who watches Forensic Files or CSI knows that all blood does not wash off and can also leave traces in the sink, pipes, washing machine.Come on, people, do you really want to listen/read anything this con artist says?Waste your hard-earned money somewhere else.

A bad choice
It does not take long to discover that you are reading the ideas of a very dark soul.This is bile cleaned up just enough not to be revealed in all it's pathological splendor.

What a disappointment
I hesitated buying this book - the cutsie oh-so-clever title was offputting - but I took a chance and bought it, and big mistake.I found this to be way too long, offered no insight whatsoever, and sometimes it just plain rambled.I couldn't finish it.

Gives Faces to the Victims
You won't find a lot of fancy CSI-style investigative work described here. Ann Rule's narrative mostly follows in the plodding, discouraged footsteps of the members of the Green River Task Force as they track a serial killer over a twenty-year period. For lack of any concrete evidence, most of those twenty years were spent discovering and identifying bodies, and following up the thousands of tips that poured into the Task Force offices, citing the peculiar, disturbing habits of "my boyfriend," "my ex," "that one john I picked up." (Even though Rule had already been reporting crime for years when these bodies started to surface, she still writes about her shock at the sheer quantity of these dangerously fantasizing boyfriends that came to light in the course of this investigation.)
Too much info and not enough
I am definately a fan of Rules work, and recommend anyone interested start with "A Stranger Beside Me" before trying out other books.This one is a very interesting case, of course, the guy killed some fifty women, so again, anyone interested in this type of crime, criminal or police work surrounding it will find something here interesting to read about.

Woodward's story of Casey's years at the helm of U.S. state terrorism centers around Casey and his British-bred, WWII-honed perspective used to justify government covert actions that include torture, disappearance, and death.We learn that America did not begin her slide down the slope to Nazi Germany with the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq in the Twenty-First Century.It began when Hitler's faults began to take revenge on the Allies through the creation of the OSS in London, predecessor to CIA.Under Reagan's two terms as President with Casey at the helm of CIA, U.S. state terrorism ran rampant in its aim to establish a system of Anglo/U.S.-sponsored authoritarian states.

Sit back and read this book
This is my favorite book and I believe anyone could read it.You'll be recommending this book to your friends.You won't want to put down the book!

The Games People Play
This was an entertaining study of the games people play in a smallish southern city. Berendt's descriptions of Savannah's atmosphere and the real character's he met there are excellent. Berendt has a great grasp of local Savannah politics. His initial enthusiasm for the place became tempered toward the end of the book as languid Savannah's also a provincial place that tolerates a certain amount of violence and mumbo jumbo, depending on who the perpetrators and targets of both are. The book's end came rather quickly and perhaps a bit incompletely, what happened to Danny Hansford's mom and her lawsuit? Berendt's description of his attending Savannah's African American debutante's ball was hilarious. The main point of this book seemed to be in real life the truth is often hard to find and when it's found it's often awful, but that money often buys the alternate truths that make it into the papers, and that's the truth that people buy.

Grabs hold of the reader!
It's fascinating how sutch many small details of someone's live can be so interesting and enthralling to read. I don't really know what does it, might be my interest in the double life of Thomas Capano himself, and how someone who looks so good on the outside turn out to be the devil himself, or just my fascination of the story as a whole. This book is for the readers who want to get into to the life of the characters and how they behaved both during the crime was committed, before and after. It takes us in to their personal life, and the different lives of Thomas Capano as a family father, lover and murderer. Okay, the author can sometimes be a little bias, as some reviewer put it; we know that Ann Marie was beautiful and Thomas Capano was an idiot, and that we all could be without. But as a whole I really don't think that destroys my interest of the story as a reader and otherwise, except from these few lines a little once in a while, I think the author gives us a value free, detailed story that grabs hold of the reader. I've read the book two times so far since I bought it last spring, and that doesn't happen very often.
A bit overly descriptive
I became a fan of Ann Rule after reading a couple of other books and I did enjoy this, my third true crime book.I do recommend this to fans of Rule, however I wouldn't recommend this one as a starting point to any that have never read one of her books, start with the story of Bundy, her most famous case.
A Sad and Deadly Love Affair
Being an Ann Rule fan who reads all her work, I was expecting another stellar book.It's not that this book is a bad book, far from it - - I just don't consider it one of Ms. Rule's best.

I MAXIMIZE my respect for John Walsh
Tears of Rage is such a brilliant book. It is very touching, tragic, and even insightful. Not only did I truly enjoy it, but also I found it hard to put down. Such hard times for this fellow after the sadistic murder of his lovely child Adam. Yet he does not give up and he battles and battles for justice for Adam. It was not easy and the police unit were not very helpful and competent with handling his son's case. And it broke John's heart. But he never ran out of fuel to find justice for his beloved son. I admire that. I fully admire his heroic deeds in becoming the host of AMW and has been contributing immensely to snatching sick predators that cannot linger around in the world any longer and especially caring about missing children. If John Walsh have not audaciously fought for our safety, how much worser will the country be in right now? Thank you John Walsh. And I am glad that Adam Walsh bill was successful and was made into law recently.

High School Student Review
I am currently a freshman at New Technology High School.The book, Tears of Rage, was recommended to me by my Forensic Science teacher.Like most people, I had watched America's Most Wanted on TV before and decided that I would check this book out.After reading Tears of Rage by the host of America's Most Wanted, John Walsh, I was given a compltley new look at our society.Through his book Mr. Walsh explains how the kidnap and murder of his child Adam, helped lead him to fight for changes.A few of of Walsh's trimphs include: Passing a bill that helps local police agencies share information on criminals and reported crimes, get the FBI involved in missing children cases (as they are supossed to) even if there is not a ransom note, write two books, create a missing children center to help parent's of mising children, and of course host America's Most Wanted that has successfully caught hundreds of criminals and brought justice to the victim's families.I would recommend this book to anyone, as well as Walsh's other book, No Mercy.The book does not read complex, John speaks clearly and in a way that everyone can understand.His opinions are strong, but he demonstates how important it is to stand up and make a change.

Nice little mystery
I don't know why Follett would "disavow" this book. It may not be great fiction or even fiction, but it's a nice little thriller or mystery.
Fascinating True Crime Caper
Rather confusingly, this brief and engaging true crime chronicle (it is NOT a novel) has appeared in English under three different titles over the years: The Heist of the Century, Under the Streets of Nice, and The Gentleman of 16 July. To make things even more confusing, although the book was largely the work of French journalists writing under the pseudonym Rene Maurice, some editions prominently bear the name of bestselling thriller-writer Ken Follett on the cover. As Follett explains on his web site, the original translated manuscript was a mess, and he was hired (before he was an established brand) to "fix" it. He spent about two weeks on it and since then has more or less disavowed it: " Not only was it not my best effort, it was well below what I could do.... It's still not a good book, but I turned a completely unpublishable manuscript into something more or less respectable."
Even the author doesn't recommend it
This novel is a translation from a book originally written in French. Ken is the third author that attempted to translate this book into English.Visit the Ken Follett web site and learn the story behind this book. So many problems...

Interesting Verdict
Cornwell presents a good case, although not without flaws, for whom she believes the killer to be.This book took a lot of criticism when it was first released, but it is very well researched and documented.Definitely worth the read by any true crime fan.

Case Open
This book is a classic instance of someone wanting the evidence to fit a predetermined "proof". Still, the book is an interesting read. I would recommend that readers interested in Jack the Ripper read Philip Carraher's "The Adventure of the New York Ripper. In that book Jack has gone from London to New York City to kill again. While it's a work of fiction, the underlying "Ripper" facts are accurate and the analysis of the Ripper's London crimes quite good. Also the conclusion seems at least supportable under the facts and circumstances surrounding Jack the Ripper's crimes. It might be that Carraher comes closer to "solving" the Ripper crimes than does Cornwell. ... Read more

More Than About The Bulgers
As much as a simpleton that Howie Carr is, his recounting of the Bulger brothers' lives exposes the small-minded venality that taints so much of the city. That Billy became president of UMass was puzzling to anyone who didn't know the story behind the story. Carr's explanation of how it happened and how corruption followed him put it into context.
A Bulger retrospective.
Living in Boston, I am very famimiar with most of the stories floating around about the Bulger Bros.Howie corrals all of the stories that I have heard, adds a few new ones, and presents the lives of Whitey and Billy in a parallel comparison.In doing so, he believably implies that the Bros. consistently helped one another to increase their power, Billy in the Senate and Whitey on the streets.An interesting read, but does not contain much new info on the two men.

BostonWorking Man
I read it and I loved it.Finally, two of Massachusetts' worst sons are exposed.Despite the Boston Globe and plenty of sycophants long covering up their paths of devastation and destruction to our fair commonwealth, Carr's book will stand as the true testament to how the Brother's Bulgers actions destroyed lives.If you want to understand why people are fleeing Massachusetts for less corrupt states like New Hampshire and Florida, read this book. ...
