4-0 out of 5 stars Shocking material in a chewy read
A hard-to-follow structure and a dry, academic writing style make this powerful and much-needed book less accessible than it should be. 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb study of US state's use of mercenary drug-runners
This is an outstanding and revelatory book, a brilliant account of a drug-trafficking empire. He shows how US protection for their drug-runner allies has led to the huge increase in drug trafficking in the last 50 years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Parapolitics metastasize into deep politics
Peter Dale Scott illustrates clearly that one of the main aims of the US foreign policy is control of oil, because the US is heavily dependent on foreign oil and oil markets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from a former Statin Patient
Unless you have been on Statins and have experienced the negative side effects that they can cause, you won't appreciate this book.I am a college educated, experienced professional, who experienced VERY disturbing side effects while on Statins (memory loss, fatigue, muscle pain, etc.).Don't buy into the "I'm a Doctor, I'm a Scientist, I should know" B.S. from some reviews of this text.Trust your gut and question everything that anyone tells you to put into your body - M.D. or Naturalist.Anyone pushing a hard sell has an agenda - usually monetary.
1-0 out of 5 stars Review by a cardiologist with extensive experience with use of the statin agents.
As a practicing, invasive and non-invasive cardiologist specializing in the still rare practice of preventive medicine, this book (and other similar writings under the guise of enlightened information) is largely unfortunate, especially for those readers also suspicious, gullible and paranoid, who are looking to spend their time & money to further support their existing ideas. I have personally taken statins and recommended them to all members of my family (though only those members I respect and for whom I fell some love) since 1990, well before good double-blind, placebo controlled, prospective trial treatment outcome data was available. Naturally, for self interest reasons, I have also watched the scientific evidence about human (and animal) responses to statin treatment overtime very closely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled with data-rich insights
I'll admit that any book with the work heresies in the title has an automatic advantage in peaking my interest, but this volume does so much more than merely entice. MacCoun and Reuter have done an amazing job of looking that drug prohibition from a new point of view. Frankly, despite the passage of a few years, I believe that this book is absolute essential if one hopes to really understand the controversy over the War on Drugs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top quality analysis
The 'War on Drugs' in the United States grew from a million dollar acorn absentmindedly planted by President Nixon to a thriving 18 billion dollar oak three decades on.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Careful and Honest Look at Alternative Drug Policy
"In Drug War Heresies, Robert J. MacCoun and Peter Reuter ask whether drug prohibition makes sense and whether legalization might achieve a better balancing of the costs and benefits associated with drugs and drug policy. They draw on a broad range of social science literature, and they emphasize the lessons provided both by drug prohibition in other places and by prohibitions of other goods, such as alcohol and prostitution. In discussing this evidence, they raise most of the key issues that should be considered in evaluating drug policy. Their book is an excellent starting point for anyone who wishes to understand the debates about prohibition versus legalization.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Woof woof. Who is that howling?
Paul Williams has put out a book, with a big emphasis on sources and footnotes and a scholarly appearance. Professionally put together it seems. He warns that Osama has dozens of nukes within the United States already and that the "American Hiroshima" is coming soon.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Copy Should be Placed by Every US Front Door!
When you finish this book you will be depressed as hell and then you will realize that you ought to spend every waking moment enjoying life.Paul Williams writes well about the end of the world as we now know it and he gives great footnotes and a wonderful index for those who are into checking and rechecking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it, then read it, and you'll never look at your health the same way again!
This is the book that could change your life.Honest.If you suffer from arthritis, allergies, Herpes, are HIV positive, have asthma or CFIDS or any other chronic illness, this book will change the way you look at your health.Western medicine only wants to suppress the symptoms- this book is about cures! So much of what happens within our bodies is due to sensitivities (or allergies) to anything from shellfish to our own hormones.Once those allergies are cured (YES, they can be cured), your no-longer-distracted immune system will be able to act more normally.I am currently being cleared of my allergies (by my acupuncture doctor) using the methods in this book.I was alergic to paper, red wine, animal dander, my DNA, my hormones, smoke, and a whole host of other things.Halfway through the six week process, my weight is dropping and I'm breathing through my nose. And there's still more improvement to come. Read this book, and trust me, your life will change for the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will change your life!
This book will change your life for the better and your health will never be the same. This book impowered me to eliminate my own allergies and those of friends and family permanately. The author explains in her book by using simple spinal stimulation we can reprogram our immune system to longer react to substances we are treating (dust, mold, foods, etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
A highly intelligent overview of many illness that are directly or indirectly connected to allergies. What struck me most was the way the author shows a truly deep understanding of the complex causes of eachillness and yet offers meaningful treatment options. It should be notedthat the book is primarily intended as an introduction (though it goesfurther than any introduction) to using NAET - a particular type of allergydesensitisation.NAET is quite revolutionary in its approach and thecombination of insight into disease and intelligent treatment options makesthis book a winner for anyone with immune disorders. So much moresophisticated (though easy to understand) than the vast majority of bookson immune disorders/allergies out there. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars www.truthring.org gives it '2 Owls Up!'
Excellent book. Not only is this book based on a life of a top DEA agent, but it's also written very well! It's not dry nor tedious, it's a pleasure to read! And the information contained here is a goldmine.
1-0 out of 5 stars Great story, but...
Castillo tells a great story, even if there isn't much truth to it. Yes, all guerilla groups inevitably get involved with drugs. That's about where the truth ends. John Kerry's investigation went nowhere because there was no evidence, and he admitted that. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. also came up empty. So naturally it MUST be a dark conspiracy! Please. The contra leaders were adamant that their subordinates NOT raise money via illegal means. Besides, if the Contras HAD all of that drug money, they wouldn't have needed so much US funding. The cartels ended their association with contra armies by 1982. Bottom line: Castillo's book is not about drugs; it's a shameful attempt to rewrite history in favor of America's red enemies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bush Crime Family involved in drugs?Say it isn't so!
The foreward, written by Michael Levine, encourages the reader to cancel all appointments for the next several hours as the reader will not be able to put this book down.Levine wasn't kidding. This book is about the life of Cele Castillo. It begins with Cele's childhood under the rule of a military father.Cele ends up being drafted for the Vietnam war and his experiences in Vietnam are so amazingly vivid that it's impossible to put this book down. The drug use in Vietnam was so rampant that this is where Cele learns that narcotics were much more of a threat to America than Communism as he vows to fight the illegal drug industry if he ever makes it out of Vietnam in one piece.Cele survives the jungle, the snipers, and even his first helicopter crash. He's hired by the DEA and assigned to work in New York.He works hard, risking his life many times to bust drug dealers and ends up working in Central America. As if a second helicopter crash and being the guy responsible for upsetting powerful drug lords weren't risky enough, Cele stumbles upon the CIA and Oliver North's involvement in the illegal drug industry & illegal gun running during the Iran-Contra scandal, which also involved Bush Sr. & the Reagan administration.North & his crew were selling over-priced weapons to Iran as well as selling tons of cocaine to American cities as they used all of those profits to buy massive amount of weapons that they flew in to the Contras. As the cash and weapons were flown into the Contras, cocaine was brought back to America under the protection of the US military and CIA.The airplanes & airplane hangars were all CIA and NSA owned, and the pilots (Barry Seal & others) were contracted by the CIA.The corruption and involvement of our own CIA in the illegal drug industry wasn't enough to make Cele give up, he kept fighting to make a dent in the illegal drug industry. He was warned to stay away from the operations of Oliver North and the CIA but he pressed on anyway. That's when his career suffered as an internal investigation was launched against him.As if death threats and surviving a plane crash (his 3rd crash) weren't enough, trumped-up charges were used against him to end his career at the DEA.Cele risked his life countless times, got tons of cocaine off the streets of America & traded his marriage for dedication to his career.Senator John Kerry's investigation went nowhere, Bush Sr. pardoned North's crew as they only got a slap on the wrist (probation) while the DEA rewarded Cele by ending his career. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Whistle Blowing!!
An excellent book with documentation on the abuses of the FDA.Another literal example of one thing that is very wrong in our country.I don't understand how after all the exposure to the abuse that goes on it "just keeps ticking".The only conclusion is there is an incredible amount of power and money behind keeping this system going. To read about the suppression of vital information that could halt aids and get people into remission in unbelievable but true.Worth reading and waking up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an honest and gutsy expose on the FDA's deceit.
Let the truth be told. It is about time that someone finally found a way to put the facts into print. Feuer has the guts to tell it like it is. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Right now he is a prisoner of his deep, dreamy sleep"
Although 50ish construction worker Gary may have a home where he gathers for safety, in his battered and decrepit trailer on the outskirts of Petulia, Mississippi, his heart is somewhere else. His emotionally fraught wife Gina is having an affair, and his twenty-something daughter Lulu is about to pack up and leave for the bright-lights of New Orleans.
4-0 out of 5 stars Almost lyrical tale of two troubled men
Gary is a construction worker in his early 50's, living with his emotionally-distant wife Gina and his daughter (although she looks like neither one of them, so Gary suspects otherwise) Lulu in atrailer located in a small town in Louisiana. He makes it through each day solely by abusing prescription medications and alcohol, supposedly needed to drive away the battle "flashbacks" from his tour of duty in VietNam, but likely moreso out of dissatisfaction with his life as a closeted gay man.
5-0 out of 5 stars Southern Gothic
Gary is a construction worker in a shanty town way down South where nobody ever admits to being gay.His only friend, like Gary himself a homosexual trapped in a loveless marriage, has put an end to his life in a shocking way, and this makes Gary think about how to proceed, for what's the point in living if you can't be who you really are?In Gary's case, this involves coming to terms with painful memories of service in the US forces in Vietnam, visions of which come to haunt him whenever he lets his guard down.To medicate himself, he does the Rush Limbaugh thing and has built a fragile mental economy on counter prescriptions, including heavy doses of Valium.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Observation on the War On Drugs
Judge Gray offers an impressive argument against Drug Prohibition. As a conservative Republican judge and prosecutor with decades of experience in law enforcement, he is very qualified to present this striking case against our current policy. As he says throughout the book, "The treatment is more harmful than the disease." This war on drugs is hurting America more than simple drug use ever would. Politicians are exploiting people's fears of drug use, drug cartel's are stronger than ever, drug use has never declined, and the prison industrial complex is flourishing. It is time to declare this decades old policy ineffective. This book describes the problem and gives asolution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book includes every argument for anti- Drug Prohibition that I have ever used, and some that I never thought of.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Material from a Credible Source
The first thing to note about this book is that it comes from a "credible" source - a former prosecutor and defense attorney, and current judge who wants to REDUCE drug use, as well as the enormous side effects resulting from outlawing their use. ("Credible" in the political sense, as opposed to pot-smoking hippie, who might be just as logical, but carry much less political weight.)

Editorial Review

In a retrospective look at the war on drugs in the United States, journalist Dan Baum calls the nation's drug policy "as expensive, ineffective, delusional and destructive as government gets." He examines the Nixon White House's effort to turn the drug war to political advantage and the Carter Administration's brief flirtation with decriminalizing marijuana. He also details the cover-ups and blunders of some of the biggest drug busts in the country's history. Yet despite the policy's ineffectiveness, at least 85 percent of Americans oppose legalization. Baum sheds light on the reasons for this issue and calls for radical compromise. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The War on Drugs? An Abysmal Failure
Each year illicit drugs claim the lives of at least 450 Australians. In WA alone, heroin overdoses have cost more than one life per week so far this year.Politicians, health officials, the police and community in general are struggling to devise a solution to this drug menace.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books ever published. Excellent writing, and a very easy read..
There is conformity in our society, and it is a scourge that kills human spirit. It's a kind of ignorance, a common human narrow-mindedness that is at the root of keeping human beings from tolerating each other.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really funny and exciting
I'd say this book is extremely informative for the responsible, occasional sit at home drug user. I read it and learned a few things about the law I didn't know about. Definately a must read for anyone who uses any drugs whether it be a little or a lot. If you're a dealer it gives you an outlook of legal information, but one of the author's commandments in the book is "Thou shall not sell" which every dealer already knows. The only rule for dealers is DON'T GET CAUGHT.
