1-0 out of 5 stars Major Disagreements
While I realize that many readers enjoy approaching a topic through the author's personal experiences, people like myself will find much of this book self indulgent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative book with heart and facts about adopting in China.
This book is very easy to read if you are thinking of adopting or are adopting from China. It is full of information on chinese culture, the adoption process, and what may happen after you get back home. Some parts brought tears to my eyes, but I am a bit sappy.I would recommend this book to people adopting, thinking of adopting from China, or those who have already adopted. It really gives a lot of information on Chinese history and why so many little baby girls are abandoned shortly after birth. My heart goes out to all the lost daughters and I hope they are all given the chance to find a forever family.

5-0 out of 5 stars ten thousand stars
This is one of those rare books that I can't praise highly enough.I won't summarize it because others have done so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars
A wonderful book about extraordinary real women who deserve their own spot along side the Founding Fathers. The bravery and the guts of these women surprised me. Each one was heroic in her own way and has made me want to learn more about each one.

5-0 out of 5 stars History Comes Alive ...
This is a very fascinating book and I am glad that I was able to buy it not too long ago. I remember reading the back of the book at the bookstore and thinking, "I have to have it." That first thought hasn't changed.
4-0 out of 5 stars LOW-KEYED, INFORMATIVE AND PLEASING READ
I rather enjoyed this low-keyed take on history. The reading was easy and it was fun and I did indeed learn some facts I was unaware of.This by no means is "hard core history" and I doubt if it was ment to be.The book of course take a look a the wives of some of our founding fathers and the role they played at the time. The book appears to be reasonably researched, as any book of the nature can be, and the author uses an easy and informative style. On the otherhand, I doubt if this work will satisfy the hard core reader of history any more than it will satisfy the reader who is wanting a cozy sort of read...it sort of falls in the middle somewhere.I read it for pleasure and did receive that from it.Recommend this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Story of Ruth
Jam packed with wisdom and insight for all people. A must read for all women and one that you will read many times. Sure wish I had this guide when I was a young woman. Plan to use as a discussion book for a spirituality group. A fabulous book to give as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motivation for coping with the daily grind of life
I read "The Story of Ruth" about a year after I read "Scarred by Struggle," which is also by Dr.Chittister. Both books offer inspriation for dealing with difficulties based on a biblical story. The difference between the type of advice they offer, is that "The Story of Ruth," contends more with the daily struggles that confront us in our lives, whereas "Scarred by Struggle" offers advice more suitable to a particular setback, such as an end of a relationship, or loss of job.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Story of Ruth-----A Beautiful Gift
Every mother should gift her daughter with this beautiful book! Joan Chittister unfolds beautifully and clearly what every mother wishes her daughters to know in order to become the full persons they were created to be.Each example from the Story of Ruth powerfully illustrates "delineating moments in every human life...... points after which we are never the same again".In The Story of Ruth, Joan Chittister shows us the qualities of Naomi and Ruth as they face life and make choices.... but more than that, Chittister confirms, refreshes and energizes the "stuff" that all women hold within themselves. This is an en-courgaging book for all women...mothers daughters, grandmothers.....women....single or married..... and it is also a book for MEN!For within these pages there is the depth of thought and experience lived by "the other half of humanity." Men will find the richness of this insight invaluable....an enhancement to their own perspective and attitude toward creation.

Great Book with women as they should be seen. But you've got to be mature enogh to appreciate it and for the guys looking for cheap porn and not art recommend you just skip this! But if you want to see women without makeup or any fancy hair style this is a definite recommendation to add your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
I LOVE THE BOOK... IT IS A COMBINATION OF GREAT ART AND ENTERTAINMENT!

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful!! and full of life
I normally don't like to write these reviews, I feel art and music are such subjective experiences, you really need to check it out for yourself. But I had to say that this was a very beautiful book. Its an intimate view into a world, most of us men rarely get to be a part of, especially living in such a fast paced world. Veronique Vial captures these passing moments, tip toeing her way through the homes of some well known and before-they-were-famous woman. All the more reason to appreciate this book. Being a photographer, I can also appreciate the clean straight forward layout, that really shows off her great work. Her previous Men Before Ten am, I found too dark and over designed. Its hard to compare the two, because of the subject, but the printing on Women is superior and it has brighter and livelier feel. Her photographs really capture the moment, which is what great photography is all about.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book has Changed my Life.
I have to say, I felt pretty disgusted with myself, having to pretend to be insecure and self-depreciating, just to get other women to like me. But by God it works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Women Working Wisely
This book has been an invaluable reference and resource for me.Pat Heim's experience in addressing relationally aggressive behaviors between women in the workplace shows through in every page she writes. With "In the Company of Women" she adds one more feather to her impressive cap and advances each reader's understanding of this important issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable and authoritative information
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I thank her very much. The authors have described processes that explain what I have observed, but couldn't quite understand, until reading this book. Why women have an incredible memory for hurts and injustices; why women can be so 'catty' amongst themselves; why women can talk so intimately and so easily with each other and with men... I could go on and on with the questions I've always had about women.Learning about the 'tend and befriend' hormone and about the Darwinian survival characteristics of many of these behaviors helps men (as well as women) understand and not personalize these inherent patterns.I especially appreciated the research citations and the sound scientific foundations of the authors' conclusions.I have recommended this book to a dozen people I know, and I think it's a worthwhile read for any adult who works with, is in a relationship with, or is a woman - and I guess that's everyone. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Karrine Steffans Sees The Light
in that the whole industry exploits vulnerable women of color such as Karrine Steffans.I know some would say that they participated voluntarily but I hear stories such as Ms. Steffans regarding music industry's exploitation and abuse of women who starred in rap videos. The whole hip hop video scene has come under fire recently by all sectors of society for its sexual and violent content.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking something
Karrine's story was gripping, but there was emotion missing. I felt like she was just sitting back, giving a list of things that happened and not really grasping the effects of them. Regardless, I think she is a strong woman and I admire her willingness to say, "ENOUGH!" and get her stuff together.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read
I really liked reading this book. I finished it in one day. At first I felt bad for. Then, as I read more, I thought she was stupid and by the end of the book I questioned whether she learned anything at all. I mean, yes she knows her mistakes, but I dont think she has learned from them. Overall, I think this book was a great read. I would recommended it to anyone who wants to live the Hollywood lifestyle. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars dumping the baby with the bath water
Mahmood has a pleasant, easy-going style, which makes for good reading. She makes every effort in her ethnographic work to put herself into the place of the women of the mosque movement. She seems to look at the situation from the presupposition that people are purely products of their circumstances, which precludes much in the way of personal choice.I prefer to believe we do have choice. While I respect the choice these women have made, I think it would be a mistatke to assume that there's no coersion or oppression in their lives. That is, it's fine to accept the choices people make, but oppression is still oppression.Yes, let's see things as much as we are able from the subject's point of view, but lets not pretend oppression and subjugation aren't still oppression and sujugation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Radically New Way of Thinking About Feminist Issues in the Arab World
Radical feminists, of the post-structuralist or deconstructionist blend, have accustomed us to put into question notions that have long been a constitutive part of the liberal/progressive agenda and to critically reexamine well-established categories such as gender, class or race. It should therefore come as no surprise if Saba Mahmood, an anthropologist trained in the intellectual hotbed of UC Berkeley, provides a description of the Muslim world that goes against the grain of conventional wisdom and shatters many certainties held dear by feminists and liberals alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book!
using case studies, the authors teach us WHY smart women make poor choices as told from the male perspective. Learn how to break the pattern and prevent it in your own life!

5-0 out of 5 stars No more wrong men in this woman's life!
I went about my life wondering why men had such power over my life and emotions, despite the fact that I have many accomplishments under my belt and am a smart career woman.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's never to late
After reading this book my first thought was, Where was this book years ago when i really needed it? perhaps it's never too late to dissolve self destructive patterns. My father was killed when i was young setting the course for a lifetime of bad choices. My destructive behavior began in college whentook up cohabitation with an older man looking for that father figure. I compounded that fiasco by marring him. after reading this book and others i have become painfully aware that the first step to taking my life back is acknowledging the choices i have made and why I made them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Useful
I thought when I first look at this book it was for business women. I could not have been more wrong. This book offers useful information that every woman can use in her every day life-- how to negotiate, not only with your boss but with your husband, your children and with the President of the local PTA. I find by using the techniques in the book I get more of what I want more often.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but much better negotiating books out there.
This book has a lot of suggestions for how women can be more effective negotiators. However, if you're looking for a book to read I found Women Don't Ask by Linda Babcock to be much more insightful and a much better read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thinking Before you React- A Helpful Guide to Parenting
This book is full of wise, useable, pro-active strategies for taxed parents. Excellent ways for planning and executing conversations about sex, peer related delemas, body-image problems, and discipline for the modern teen are available in this book. It is easy to read a chapter at a time, as various issues arise, and there are many comforting examples of mothers who have gone before you. Even reading the examples of what NOT TO SAY to your teenage daughter in response to various provocations, was very helpful. With all of the difficult moment to moment choices that mothers are forced to confront, it helps to have thought these issues out and taken them apart. The most helpful parenting concept I learned while reading this book is that it is vital to ponder and contain many thoughts and feelings, before reacting, when coping with a teenager. In an astute, good-humored, sympathetic fashion, Roni Cohen-Sandler offers us plenty to consider along the way. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not too helpful...Sorry
I got this book based on the description and the reviews written.I found the book to be something easy to just flip through although I tried to read page for page, it was just not too insightful. The stories were good to read, and the checklist/info at the end of each chapter was good. The only thing I did not like was the Bible/Christian perspective of the book.It does not allow all readers to relate to.Some of the suggested advice was to ACCEPT GOD?The author should have atleast indicated where some of the perspective was geared towards. Not every one is Christian, and not every can relate to the bible or a cheating minister as a husband =(

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book To Spot The Wrong Men!
Wonderful insightful book. It seems so simple, that you would be able to spot these men a mile away and run the other way but not true for some. This book has explained in clear language with a touch of spiritual aspect but not too much. Very real and straight to the point. I suggest this book for women of all ages.A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MAN TELLING ON HIMSELF WHILE TELLING WOMEN THE DEAL.....
This book, writen from a frank, but Christian perspective, lists the types on men to avoid, what they look for in a partner/victim, why the women themselves are drawn to these losers and how to work through the issues to eventually create a better relationship (except if the man is violent). The 2 end chapters also give tips on how to steer clear of "Mr. Wrong" to begin with and hope on making the existing relationship a healthier one. Mr. Arterburn's disclosure of his past mistakes, dry humor and case scenarios make this book a must-read for women who want to empower themselves, gain insight into these types of "men" and start on the path to "Mr. Right", and it will help the men who are open-minded enough to want to correct their flaws. I highly, whole-heartedly recommend this important book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written, well-organized, and... ready to go to work
Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women, by Virginia Valian, is a book with a mission. It is not Professor Valian's objective in writing this book to discuss the issues of women in leadership positions with the limited number of other academics studying the issue. It is her objective to shake the people responsible for "the accumulation of disadvantage" of women, and to make them, or their supervisors, accountable for the recruitment and retention of women.
5-0 out of 5 stars A true eye-opener!
Valian is a cognitive psychologist.I saw her speak at a local university and was impressed by the breadth of evidence she presented re: how ingrained gender discrimination is in the thinking of both men and women, but also with her logical suggestions for addressing this problem.(She, as a matter of fact, was invited by women students and faculty to help them strategize how to get more women into higher positions.)In her convincing talk, I was struck by the evidence that discrimination is not something "done" by men to keep women down, but is, in fact, "done" equally to women by both men and women. So I got her book and was more impressed when I read it. 5-0 out of 5 stars I can't stop recommending this book to every woman I know.
I waited too long to read Prof. Valian's book. Had I been armed with the knowledge offered in it earlier, I might have been spared some of the most unpleasant experiences and obstacles in my professional life. The breadth of the research covered, on everything from how young girls are channeled into certain careers or non-careers to the publishing patterns of men and women in academics, is its most impressive quality. I find myself referring to it often in everyday conversation, and recommending it to female friends and family members of all ages and levels of employment. If I have more confidence and a more positive outlook on my life's work now, it is in large part due to Prof. Valian's superb mega-study and her suggestions for moving forward. ... Read more

Editorial Review

In the latter part of the 20th century, the adage "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" has evolved far beyond its original intent as an admonition against false vanity to become a cultural manifesto used to explain phenomena as diverse as the art of Andy Warhol and the rise of a multi-billion-dollar cosmetics industry. But is there something more to human reaction to beauty than a conditioned response to social cues? Yes, says Harvard Medical School psychologist Nancy Etcoff. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not scientifically robust, but maybe a good fit for a dinner talk
"Survival of the prettiest" is a very provocative title indeed and it is also a very ambitious subject to say the least. I expected from this book an identification of a phenomenon called "survival of the prettiest" if there is indeed such a thing, and if there is, a robust account of how it can be explained scientifically, because the subtitle of this book is no less than "the science of beauty." But, as a whole, this book fails to give us any satisfactory identification or explanation of the so-called "survival of the prettiest." In fact, I find the book often drifts away to somewhat trivial episodes of some biological or sociological findings to sustain readers' interest. I don't see how such things can be put together to establish the author's ultimate claim that our biological and sociological existence is so designed that the prettiest have been assured a better chance to survive to form the current world. Chapters are not thematically connected with each other and are not well-organized to deliver what the author intends to get across. I expected somehow solid scientific backing for the author's claim, but generally said, this book is a very light read that may not be called the "science" of beauty. I have no objection, however, for the readers who just look for some interesting subjects for light talks with families and friends at the dinner table. This book may be a good fit for that purpose.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is beauty an honest advertiser?
Etcoff does a great job showing how our response to beauty is innate and deeply connected with our urge to reproduce. But I would have wished for a bit more exploration of the way beauty also might fool us. For example, she talks about men preferring women with hourglass shapes and more feminine features, because it signals health and fertility. But then she doesn't give information about whether this is true. Are more feminine looking women more fertile in reality? Are they healthier? We don't know.

5-0 out of 5 stars That's hot
This covers the science of beauty, and explains why we say "that's hot!" to someone. Great statistics presented in an exciting way.I used this book for a college paper on attraction and mating--and have given it to several girlfriends since then for flattery!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!!
I received this book from my friend when my daughter was first born and started reading to her early on.She is now 22 months and loves this book.Every night she wants me to read her a story from this book. She carries this book everywhere with her.She loves the illustrations and when we go out to dinner this book does the trick to entertain her while we wait. The book is now falling apart so I'll soon have to replace with a new one.I strongly recommend it.

I have read many, many books for women, and in particular, books about Christian growth."Pathway to Purpose" is a MUST READ!Ms. Brazelton has a unique perspective on women and how God sees us ...really sees us!She takes the ordinary day stuff and makes us recognize that everything we do as women has a purpose for Christ!IF you never read any other book, you must read this one.I am reading "Praying for a Purpose" simultaneously which is really a devotional book and complements her original "Pathway" book.I'll NEVER loan my "Pathway to Purpose" out!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars And women wonder why?
... men don't want to commit to marriage in this day and age? This little missive should put to rest any of those doubts - permanently.
5-0 out of 5 stars 'Two people in the same circumstances, having different experiences.'
I read this book, then followed it with its bookend, 'The Bastard on the Couch'. It was a very interesting combination.
5-0 out of 5 stars First Comes Anger, Then....
I wasn't sure what I'd think of this anthology, but I really responded to the honesty and intelligence of the essays.I think that part of what makes this anthology successful is the quality of the writing itself:These authors know how to tell a good story, and they also know how to write well. The same kind of heightened imagery and phrasing you see in these pieces is what you find in the authors' novels, stories, and memoirs. It would be a great oversimplification to say that The Bitch in the House is just a bunch of women griping about their lives. These essays contain stories that are full of brilliant characterization, conflict, and resolution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Half the fun in life is the joy of being a girl, woman!
Why that is a controversial statement for many is a mystery to me!
1-0 out of 5 stars a mix of good and VERY BAD advice
The first half of this book was fairly entertaining and interesting, though I disagreed with some points I felt I gained some from it.However, when I read her suggestions for getting revenge I was revolted and put the book down.I don't want to waste my time on really, really bad advice. Why would I want to clutter my mind and heart hanging on to hurts? No thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great lessons from a southern woman
I read Ronda Rich's book cover to cover within days. I enjoyed it very much. She has a lot to offer women not from the South. The author makes it very clear that there's more to a Southern woman than her accent. I actually tried several things after reading certain chapters. One example, I did an experiment by modeling what she talked about in one of her stories that makes a point. Not only did it work but it showed me an important lesson. The author touches on many subjects and will make it easy for the reader by bolding words and go into good detail in what she means. I highlighted the major points in the book so I could go back later to use as a guide. I recommend this book highly! ... Read more
