1-0 out of 5 stars Save yourself the anxiety
I won't recommend this book. The authors spend too much time listing things that have not been shown to impact a pregnancy and labeling them as "BAD".I spent my pregnancy worrying about things that in retrospect were silly (is decaf green tea really going to give me a mutated baby). It had a tendency to suggest the worst was going to happen - I didn't even finish it.I usually love to read about what is going on and find out what to expect.I even read sections of an embryology textbook. But I had my husband read the section on delivery and births, because I knew reading it myself would make things worse not better. While the other books in this series are extremely helpful, this title is not - DON'T GET IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Expect an amazing book
If your reading this review, stop and just buy the book.Especially new parents! The truth is we don't really know what to expect, and life is so much easier when we at least have a glimpse of the future. It quite possibly might be one of the best things I have ever bought my wife (and I have bought her plenty of expensive gifts).Dads buy this for your wives, moms buy this for yourself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good, sensible, non-judgemental advice and information
After reading some of the reviews for this book, I decided to buy another at the same time in case I disliked it as others had. (That other book was "The Mother of all Pregnancy Books" by Ann Douglas). This is my first pregnancy so I'm hungry for knowledge, so I began reading both books simultaneously... I have now rejected the other and am sticking with WTEWYE.

5-0 out of 5 stars What to Expect the First Year
This book is a MUST for any new parents!I have given this as a gift to every one of my pregnant friends and family.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helps millions of families from pregnancy through the toddler years.
Heidi Murkoff is co-author--along with Arlene Eisenberg and Sandee Hathaway--of The What To Expect Series--the best selling pregnancy and parenting books in the world. She's also a director on the board of The What to Expect Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing low-income parents with the information and support they need to have healthy and happy babies. Heidi Murkoff's book: What to Expect When You're Expecting, offers advice to parents about how to deal with the multitude of information now available to parents. In essence, the abundance of information available to parents can be overwhelming and lead parents to believe more in parenting experts than in themselves. We have only to look at the past several generations of American mothers who believed religiously in child-rearing experts who based much of their advice upon biased, unsound, and unscientific personal opinions. However, there is really good information available to parents now to encourage them to refine intuition by broadening their knowledge base and wisdom through education. You should trust yourselves when you parent your children more humanely and with greater respect and love. This is a good book, especially for first time mothers(parents) loaded with pictures and information detailing the monthly changes in the mothers body. Heidi Murkoff writes in a step-by-step manner, intended to walk you through this delicate time in your life--which is informative. What to Expect When You're Expecting will answer most of your questions--it also details what may go wrong. But be warned, Heidi Murkoff's style can be annoying and difficult to follow. ... Pregnancy should be a time of wonder and hope, but these days, it's associated more often with paranoia.Dr. Glade Curtis is keenly aware of the anxieties heaped upon expectantwomen: he has written several pregnancy-related books. So while he covers prettymuch any topic that an expectant mom might be concerned about, he does not overload the reader with extraneous information or horror stories that can be found in that Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for pregnant couples
My wife and I receieved this book as a gift when we announced her pregnancy. It is by far our favorite pregnancy book. The week-by-week format is perfect for following along with your progress and also makes it nice to read together. There are even helpful hints for dads along the way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed This Book!
When I was pregnant my first time, I carried this around everywhere!I was hungry for knowledge and this seemed to be the only book that I could refer to more frequently than just the month-to-month!I had wished that there was a day-to-day book, but this came very close to providing me with new information as frequently as possible. It is a staple of the pregnancy book diet!
5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must Have For Pregnancy!
I absolutely LOVE this book.I grabbed a pile of books at the bookstore and looked through each one carefully before selecting this one.It is the only best-selling guide written by a doctor with millions of copies sold. And I know why now that I own it!!I don't see the negative like some readers do.It is written by a doctor, so it provides a lot of info that you'd get by talking with your doctor every day!So there are things that you should know about even if you don't want to hear it or don't think it will happen to you!It explains things such as bleeding during pregnancy, some common medications to avoid to prevent birth defects, pollutants to avoid and why, STDS during pregnancy, nutrition and sources/serving sizes, how your actions affect your baby's development (vaccinations, smoking, xray, falling, safety, etc.), possible tests, required tests, lying on your back, rh-sensitivity, douching, sex, backaches, exercise guidelines, air travel, car safety, breastfeeding, pregnancy discomforts (hemmorhoids, constipation, backaches, foot swelling, dizziness, breast itching, cramping, contractions), infections, hot tubs, jaundice...It really is like having a doctor's advice for each week of your pregnancy. It relieved alot of the worrying about symptoms I was experiencing, realizing that I was "normal".

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be Mandatory Reading
I feel this book should be on the "mandatory reading" list for all women - especially young women. Our society and most of our mothers have wholly failed at teaching us about this sacred subject! Whether you are trying to get pregnant, trying to prevent pregnancy, or neither of the above, this is a must read.I would add, that there is a lot of information in this book that men should know too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this and got pregnant the first month!
I had no trouble conceiving my first child when I was 35 years old. When we tried for baby #2, however, I was 39 years old and after 6 months of fruitless efforts we were beginning to get frustrated. A friend recommended this book to me. I got the book and began charting my cycle using the methods in the book. BINGO! I got pregnant the very first month I charted. What I learned in the process, was that I was ovulating a full week later than normal, so while my husband and I were diligently trying to conceive in the early part of my cycle, up through the time I thought I would be ovulating, we were stopping our determined efforts a little too early. The month I started charting, we just kept on going (much to my husband's delight: )until the thermometer said we could stop. A couple of weeks later I discovered I was pregnant and now our daughter has a little brother!: )
5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Fertility
I bought this book with a bit of hesitancy due to the fact as a medical professional, I thought that I knew all there was to the female body. What I learned in this book challenged everything I thought I knew. When I have a daughter, I will definitely be holding onto this gem to pass along to her...

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Frustrating
"The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy" is a difficult book to rate. Vicki Iovine's honesty and sense of humor about pregnancy deserves 5 stars. If you find pregnancy difficult for even a moment, this book will be a great comfort to you.It is a delightful antidote to the dry, frightening pregnancy books that flood the market.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tons of Fun
I really enjoyed this book.Jenny McCarthy is very up-front and detailed about her pregnancy experience.Which is a good thing - she has an excellent, irreverent sense of humor.Reading this book feels like a conversation with a close friend.McCarthy has been through all the good and bad sides of pregnancy. When you read this book, you know that she understands what it's all like, and that makes you feel a little less scared about the whole thing.
5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!
I absolutely adore this book.I picked it up when I was about 6 months pregnant and read through it right away.As I was reading it I noticed that I didn't experiance any of the things that Jenny had experiance (most of the things in her book aren't in normal baby books so I thought that i was normal).Wouldn't ya know it.. I couple weeks later I got ALL of those experiance. At least I wasn't to suprised!!! She tells you what doctors and your mother wont warn you about!I recommend Baby Laughs as well

5-0 out of 5 stars Fell In Love With Jenny...
She is JUST like my best friend!!! My best friend and I are both going to start trying in January to have a baby... 5-0 out of 5 stars He knows more than I thought...
A few weeks ago, my husband turned to me out of the blue and remarked smugly, "I can't believe how some guys don't know anything about pregnancy."
4-0 out of 5 stars Short? Yes Worth it? Yes Useful? Yes
As a first time expecting father everything has been confusing, even looking for a pregnancy guide that's shorter than The Bible. This was my first book I've read on the subject so I didn't want something overwhelming. This is exactly what this book is good for. It gives relevant information that one can digest in a few hours and come away knowing more than they did. This book is simple, informative, and humourous. I remember quite a few times where I would point a part out and show it to my wife.
5-0 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air
My wife and I read this book together while expecting our first child. Our doctor, friends, and family inundated us with medical/psychological/technical books that increase your stress levels as much as your knowledge about pregnancy. This author manages to inform and entertain at the same time.It is a quick read that provided a welcome break from the other content-heavy pregnancy books, although I would recommend reading one or two of those as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Pregnancy Gift
I received this journal from a girlfriend when I was pregnant with my first child from a girlfriend. It does not have a large amount of space for personal writing if you intend to use the book as a true journal. The information however is very informative and interesting. What I enjoyed the most however were the bits of information on pregnancy in other cultures, non of the other pregnancy books or journals included that topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just right
I think this journal has just the right balance of interesting info and space for me to write. It was fun having something to read each day about the baby and our health. I also like that I could write in the dates based on my due date so I could easily see where I was throughout my pregnancy. I've given it several times as gifts to friends. ... Read more

The role of birth partner is a tough one. A birth partner may be expected to help a laboring woman make decisions and help her get through the pain and discomfort of childbirth. During this high-intensity time, the birthpartner--whether father, partner, or friend--needs a book that can give thorough information for studying ahead of time, yet can be easily referenced in an emergency or for quick answers during labor and delivery.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on Labor & Delivery
I've been a working with expectant parents for the last 14 years, 5 of which as a birth doula and childbirth educator. When I meet with a new client, I always ask that they read 'The Birth Partner' along with those who are attending their birth. Childbirth is definitely an area in which knowledge equals power - in this case 'The Birth Partner' is a true powder keg to empower yourself in your childbirth journey. I feel that it is a 'must read' for every expectant family.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you really want to be a PARTNER, this is the book to read!
I can't even count how many times I have checked this book out from the library. It's great to see that it is in it's second edition and still getting great reviews and helping so many people.I read this book from cover to cover when I was pregnant with my first child. My husband wanted to support me in my efforts to give birth naturally but wasn't sure how--and I wasn't sure what to tell him.Lamaze classes didn't really help him to understand his role.He wanted to be more than the pillow holder and breathing coach. After reading this book I was able to tell him exactly what he could do and say that would really help me.As he is not an avid reader, I read and then discussed each section with him. This definitely helped build confidence and trust for both of us.We have since been able to have 4 natural and unmedicated births, which I belive would be nearly impossible without the right kind of support from a labor partner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Years of success with this book
I've used this book as a reference for many new parents to assist them for over 20 years, my own daughter is a result of using this book and I can't say enough about the benefits of this book, Vimala is terrific for having researched abd written the fantastic book.

Love this book...it is very encouraging.I like "Holding Time" just as well...although the basis is different.I like the similarity.A great read for anyone interested in bonding deeper w/ their children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for a book, but I'd rather look at a video.(I'm very visual.)
This book is nice, but for the same price you can buy a DVD on the subject.I like Aimee Ketchum's DVD because not only does she do a great job of demonstrating baby massage, but she also gives lots of information on how your baby develops. Her massage method lasts only 4-5 minutes per session. I really don't have the time to spend an hour giving my baby a massage. There is so much more information on her DVD about your baby and how simple exercises can help your baby's brain development and lots and lots of other stuff.I just don't see why you'd want to buy a book with only massage pictures in it when you can buy a DVD with not only lots of massage info, but also has tons and tons of other simple stuff you can do with your baby. It makes so much sense and you don't need to buy anything else. Plus Aimee has a nice personality and you can tell she really cares. She's very qualified and is a pediatric OT plus certified massage therapist for babies, like Gweneth Paltro hires to massage her baby. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not "Everything" you need to know
Dr. Sears seems to have spent the better part of his children's lives writing books about which he has no experience. His relegation of the father's role to secondary exemplifies his own inadeqacies.Back to the book.I'm sure it's useful to those mothers and fathers who never had the oral tradition training for parenthood and need a little help, but I would much rather recommend other types of reading for parents and parents-to-be.Spend some time on Native American spirituality. A little more time on books dealing with your nutrition prior to conception(BOTH PARENTS.)Try some humor, like Nora Efron to keep your spirits balanced.Learn about your body, mind, and spirit and that of your child by reading and listening to Rayna Gangi. Dr. Sears. You may help those who have no clue, but you need some further reading yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars useful and complete
A very userful book especially for new parents. It doesn't take anything for granted telling you everything you should know about your child. I could find answers to very common and "normal" concerns about my baby, that no one told me before (as for exaple that babies are not silent while sleeping, being in perfect health!)and important suggestments to detect more serious illnesses (such as GERD!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Try It Out, and you'll see it works for you
I received this book several years BEFORE I became a mother--and decided it seemed a little too much for me.There was NO WAY I would ever sleep with my baby, breastfeed for more than 8 months, or carry the baby EVERY WHERE I went. However, I did appreciate that they valued the relationship between parent and baby, and that they were respectful of the child's needs and abilities, as well as the parent's needs and abilities. They also had some helpful ideas about food allergies, which runs in my family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I was loaned this book when I was pregnant with our first child and since then have bought it for every person I knew who was pregnant. Other pregnancy books sugarcoat this like "your might feel a little discomfort this month" where Armin Brott's book said: your wife will feel terrible this month. I liked that approach much more than the happy bunnies pregnancy-is-wonderful side. I would reccomend this book to everyone who is pregnant, moms and dads

5-0 out of 5 stars To become a Father
This book was wonderful. My wife and I both read this book. It has great humor to it and covers a lot of issues that a female's pregnancy book doesn't. Money, sex, the raging hormones and changes to her body from a mans point of view.I ABSOLUTELY recommend this book, to both mothers and fathers to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
My wife and I wanted to know as much as we can about having a baby. This is one of the books that stand out in its category and I bought it. I am very pleased with it! Mr. Brott describes what it takes to be a dream father-to-be. I was deeply impressed and I will do my very best to come as close to the described role model as possible because as my wife said: "What more a pregnant woman may ask for?" I am very happy that in addition to information about the baby are discussed so many and it was hard to believe that they are so many little but important things that I and only I must take of. I even had to face the frustration from 9 sexless months but that won't happen because I learnt from another bestseller scientifically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex how to enjoy multi-orgasmswith or without her. Now I can confidently say that the key to success as a father-to-be is to be prepared as much as possible. This book is one of the must have because it covers many areas and provides excellent and detailed advice. I am sure that it will help you to be a dream father-to-be as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Also Good for Fathers-To-Be
One of the very few stipulations my wife made after we learned we were going to have a child is that I read this book by the doyenne of natural childbirth in the U.S. While the tone of the book is much too touchy-feely/hippyish for me, I have to admit that it is well worth reading regardless of whether you're planning a natural childbirth or a fully tech'ed out hospital one. That said, it would be very easy to read it as gospel and get swept up in its giddy repudiation of modern medicine, so one should approach it with, if not a skeptical eye, at least with one's critical faculties fully engaged. There is also the potential that readers who are fully committed to a hospital birth may come away from this book feeling scolded, or as if their decision is somehow"wrong".
5-0 out of 5 stars Ina May is an Inspiration to all women
I read Ina May's book "Spiritual Wifery" and was inspired to get a midwife for the birth of my child (I am now 34 weeks). This book is even better thatn the 1st because it is 1) up to date, 2)has clear recommendations on what to do to have an unmedicated birth and 3) full of science and positive birth stories, she separates fact from fiction. And there's a lot of fiction out there concerning birth in the USA!Every woman should read this book, especially pregnant women.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I love all of Ina May's books, but this one is, hands down, the best book on childbirth out there. It tottaly changed my perceptions on childbirth, my body, etc., and it is very informative when it comes to the topic of interventions and the choices that women have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I have always found Varney to be useful and easy to read, especially in comparison to Speroff or Gabbe.I think that this book was never intended to be the definitive text on home birth. If a midwife's interest lies in homebirth, seek out books that cater to that option.I found the skills sections especially helpful. It isn't Varney's job to unite midwives, her primary job is to educate. You can not teach the spirit of midwife through a book, that's where mentoring comes into play. This is certainly a must have for all practicing midwives, regardless of educational background.

2-0 out of 5 stars Technically accurate, boring read
I am impressed by Varney's vast knowledge of hospital procedures as they relate to midwifery care. However, I found this to be "textbook" as a very boring read. Her information did not really cover the practice outside the hospital setting as thoroughly as would be needed for someone praticing in that setting. Her information would be most appreciated by the CNM and the L&D nurse - a great resource for them.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a good reference book, but not the best for homebirt
This book is a good reference book, but not the best one for homebirth midwives. Myle's, and Anne' Frye's books I have found to be more applicable in my practice. To the above person that thinks that Circumsision should not be addresses, I could not disagree more. Circumsision is a subject that should be addressed prenatally, and Since midwives are supposed to provide basic Post-partum care to the mother and baby during the first six weeks It is essentual that midwives and parents are educated about the issue antapartum ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best baby name book ever!
I have never felt compelled to write a review for a book on Amazon until I bought this book!I am in the process of naming my third baby.Although I already had five baby name books on my shelf, I picked this up at the bookstore and immediately wanted it.I am so glad I bought it.Not only is it a great book for naming your baby but it's extremely interesting to sit and read. This book is so much more than just a list of names, or a dictionary of name meanings. After searching countless baby name websites and my other baby name books I had come across no names I liked well enough to put on my list. After reading this book, so many names struck me as great options.I have a list so long now I don't know how to choose!Feel confident in choosing to buy this book!Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most enlightening baby-name book I've ever read
This is the most fantastic baby-name book I've ever read. And I've read it purely for FUN. The truth is, my husband and I have our minds made up about Baby #3's name (or, at least, we've narrowed the selection down considerably), and STILL, I can't put Laura's book down. (I've also spent way too many hours perusing her archived blogs online.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information
I used this book to train my 29 month old son just over 2 weeks ago.He was fully trained within a week, including staying dry at night.Actually, he started staying dry at night (day 2) before he stopped having accidents during the daytime. He had 7 accidents on day one.I was starting to lose hope when it suddenly clicked for him.He stayed dry for the second half of day one and had about 1 accident per day until day 6 (I had a little trouble convincing him to poo-poo in the potty).
5-0 out of 5 stars It really works!
I am so thankful for this toilet training book!As a [once] working mom, a stay-at-home mom, and as a mother of a child with a disability, I recommend this book to everyone!!We all want to potty train our child as quickly as possible and this book tells you how.I don't think there is a quicker method available.Even if you don't get the child trained in "less than a day," your child will still be toilet trained quicker by using this method than other methods.I have trained 6 children, and it took my kids an average of 2-3 days to be potty trained. What other method can do that?
4-0 out of 5 stars Positive Reinforcement
I liked the dicrete trial/positive reinforcement approach of the book. It can be very effective, and work quickly. My son didn't have it down in one day, but three days later, we were good to go. Give it a try! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take Care of the Child
Almost all sleep books talk about bedtime routines, sleep associations, and getting kids to fall asleep on their own, but Elizabeth Pantley does a good job of explaining why this is important.Imagine that your baby 'falls asleep rocking, nursing, sucking a pacifier' and then enters a light sleep phase and notices that everything is different from when she fell asleep. Is she likely to keep sleeping or wake up?Of course she is likely to wake up.The no-cry sleep solution will also help you to 'Change Your Baby's Sleep Associations' and 'Help Your Baby to Fall Back to Sleep on His Own' after he wakes up, whether you are breastfeeding, co-sleeping, or going back to sleep in his own crib.

3-0 out of 5 stars different strokes...
There is no one-size-fits-all solution to sleep problems, and if someone tells you there is - run the other way. Unfortunatley, what DOES exist is a whole lot of guilt.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it IS work - but worth it!
I love reading the critics of this book. They are looking for a gentle method of getting their child to sleep, but expect it to happen in a week or less.Parenting doesn't end at eight o'clock. And, like teaching your child to read, eat, go to the potty etc, it takes time and patience and practice and lots of reinforment. And this is coming from an exhausted mom, folks. And I know, from an sleep-deprived place in your brain, you tell yourself the crying is okay, it's not going to damage them - and it may be true. But going to your child when they're crying and holding them or nursing them tells them they can trust you, and THAT lasts.I used this book with my now 3 1/2 year old - she never slept...and this worked after a couple of months.I did let her fuss beside me in the bed as I held her, but she didn't so it alone.I so don't get that!Let a 4/5/6/7 month old baby lay there in a dark room, alone and bawl their head off until you've broke them like a horse and fall asleep.Insane.Elizabeth's book is just honest reading, makes you feel supported and not alone. If you want to help your child to sleep w/o CIO, seriously, not just as a pretty thought, but a commitment - this is the book for you. ... This is a must have to keep track of everything while you're pregnant. I wrote in this organizer every day while I was pregnant & would recommend to anyone who is expecting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great to keep track of dr appts!
I'm about to order this for my second pregnancy.During my first pregnancy it was vary handy to carry back and forth to the dr appts.I would write down questions in between appts. and that helped a lot!I also used the journaling pages. Not so much as a diary, but something for my child to look back at to find out how my life was before her.I would write down world news, aches and pain, anything I had time for.
