5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This book is an excellent resource for writers interested in erotic romance. Ms. Kent has authored a seminal work on the subject. I teach romance writing classes and I'm refering this book to my students who write erotic stories. I wish this text had been available when I started writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will prove an invaluable resource
Alison Kent (the pseudonym of an experience author in the genre of erotic romance) draws upon her considerable expertise in "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Writing Erotic Romance" to help aspiring authors master the specialized genre of the erotic romance. All too often writers veer into crude pornography while trying to avoid prudish conventions in storytelling. "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Writing Erotic Romance" will take the novice writer through a series of practical and effective techniques for creating compelling characters, interesting plots, and engaging dialogue laced with sexually provocative eroticism. Enhanced with advice and examples drawn from successful romance writers and editors, "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Writing Erotic Romance" will also prove an invaluable resource that includes lists of available publishers in this select genre. If you want your writing to be hallmarked with chemistry, spice, plot twists, complete characters, and "page turning romance", then add "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Writing Erotic Romance" to your instructional reference bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone who wants to add tension
This book goes beyond erotic romance and is, I think, a gem for anyone who wants to write romance of any sort. The exercises are great. Most of the topics worth thinking about even if your stories never gets beyond the bedroom door. It's all about the TENSION.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better write your OWN phrases!
This book should DEFINITELY be used as a LOOSE guideline ONLY!! (They even advise you of this in the introduction to the book) The phrases they provide sound like they were copied out of the first 10 romance books they could get their hands on! Don't look for original material...
5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful idea tool, which is what it is meant to be.
Buy this book to give you ideas when you get stuck for wording. Do not buy it to write your manuscript for you. Some of the phrasing in it is corny and/or something that would have your readers laughing too hard to continue with your story, but that is where your creativity comes in. You are a writer. Use that vastly creative imagination of yours to take a phrase from this book and reword it so that it suits your current story. The book is really meant only for inspiration, anyway.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Price
I bought this book on recommendation from a friend, but was almost put off from doing so because of the many bad reviews on Amazon.

Romances account for more than half of all mass-market paperback fiction sold. Two thousand romances are published each year. Ah, a land of opportunity, the writer is prone to think. Not so fast, Swifty. If you aren't already a reader of romances, chances are you'll never write a convincing one yourself. But if you genuinely love happy endings, Julie Beard (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of its kind
I have pretty much every book on romance writing I can get my hand on, and while there's certainly a lot of overlap among them, this is definetly the best.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Awesome, AWESOME!Get This Book!!!
If you are truly serious about becoming a successful romance writer then you MUST have this book.I've read TONS of books on writing, not only romance but fiction and non-fiction as well.None of them were as user friendly and focused on how-to info as this book. Most other books quickly brush over the how-to.This book actually shows you step by step what to do from choosing the type of romance to write, structuring your book, synopsizing each major part in 4 paragraphs to getting published!!This puts other writing books to shame and it makes me feel like I've wasted so many years with the others when I could have had this gem the entire time.
5-0 out of 5 stars A real jewel
This was the first book that I had ever read by Julie Beard. After reading her thoughts and ideas,I'm sure that it won't be the last. The book was intresting and to the point. Her ideas were well organized and thought out.A two year old could understand and utilize the information. At points there was humor and it felt as though you were talking to an old friend.Julie Beard has a new fan in me.Even if I find that I'm not intrested in her romance novels, when I am asked who is my favorite author,my answer will undoubtably be Julie Beard. The help and confidence that she offered me in this book were well worth the price.I'm not sure that I'll ever be an author, but if I fail it won't be due to anything that was lacking in her book.If I were given the opportunity I would send her a personal thank you.My out look and my life were changed in a couple of hours. ... According to Billy Mernit, all the Hollywood studios--and most major actors--"are actively seeking romantic comedies." But the same studios and actors reject hundreds of romantic comedies a month. Mernit should know. As a story analyst who has read nearly 4,000 screenplays in the last 10 years, Mernit has seen the good, yes, but also too much of the bad and the ugly. With Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ugly American
A hard to evaluate book.In some respects it is great fun.The author, a recent college graduate, goes through a series of adventures that are often outrageous, or impossible in today's world. They reflect a different world when national borders were maybe a little less gaurded and tourism less a worldwide force.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fifty years and this book still sticks with me
As a child in Paris in the early 50's it was tough finding English-language books to read. Now and then my Dad would take me to a small library at the American embassy to check out books, and it was there he urged me to read Richard Halliburton. In my mind's eye I can still see that big thick book and the photo of Halliburton in front of the Taj Mahal.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST BOOK ON THE SHELF!
I have read many writers guide books but this one is by far one of the worst. I have quite a few reasons why I feel this way but the main reason is that the style of teaching in this book seems to be a "MY WAY IS THE ONLY RIGHT WAY" kind of teaching. If you learn that way then go for it, I on the other hand like options and the book gives you the feeling that is isn't teaching you so much as demanding you to do it a specific way, the Authors' way, and only that way or you will fail! It implies that other ways will not work. Lots of the advice in this book contradicts advice that I've seen in several other how-to write books. The authors mistakenly believe because they have been published that the only way to get published is by doing EXACTLY what they did. I also found several examples where the authors say this or that will not work, yet I've seen the exact things they say NOT to do in alot of published books. There is a small bit of useful information but its of the kind that can be found in almost every romance writing book I've read. I honestly felt as though I wasted both money and time by buying and reading this book. If there was a negative rating I'd give it less than 0!
4-0 out of 5 stars Professional genre writing 101.
Not much detailed ground is covered in this slim volume, but Estrada and Gallagher do show the novice romance writer the business ropes and how to best use them without strangling yourself in the process (something I wish more writing classes had done). This is the first book about romance writing I have read (and it will not be the last, of that I am sure), but it showed me that I still have much to learn about both the genre and the industry. Then again, one is always learning.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book healed not only my heart, but my soul
When my nearly 3 year relationship ended, I was surprisingly relieved- it had been going nowhere for quite some time. But even in the midst of my newfound freedom and happiness, I knew that I still needed to grieve and learn from my mistakes. This journal was a godsend to me. I didn't want to read an advice book since that was not what I was looking for. This journal allowed me to reflect upon what had happened and then look toward the future. The various anecdotes and poems were extremely helpful as well. This journal also fit well into my life; I am often quite busy, and it really allows you to do as little or as much as you want/need to at a time. I can honestly say that I am completely healed and loving life more now than ever after completing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars In-depth way to really heal relationship pain
This is one of the best self-help books I've seen. It actually takes you through a process by which you can understand what happened in your relationship and get your thoughts and feelings out so you can move on. It makes you dig deep and think hard as you go back to the root of the problems that interfered with your relationship. The poetry used is a nice touch and the exercises very effective in helping one get to the grief that's left when your heart is broken. The technique the authors use could be applied to healing other emotional pains as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Enthralling Romp Through The Haunted Past
This is the kind of book at which Holmes, in my view, excels.I'm not that particularly fond of his painstaking mammoth biographies of Shelley and Coleridge because, well, they're too run-of-the-mill and not all that much fun to read.-In other words, just the opposite of books like this one. This type of book, where the relationship between Holmes and the author he is writing about is constantly in play add a mystery and a haunted quality inherent in the time elapsed between Holmes' time and the author's that keeps the readers attention constantly transfixed (or, at least, this reader's).As Holmes himself puts it, "The material surfaces of life are continually breaking down, sloughing off, changing, almost as fast as human skin."Examples: The passage on Shelley's view of the double, the "ghost of the living person" the view of which signified the shadow world invading this one; Shelley's view that this is what was happening to him just before he drowned himself is the most affecting passage I've read on Shelley's end, and together with the photograph of the Casa Magni, which I'd never actually seen, and whose setting Mary Shelley said caused them to be in touch with the unreal sent shivers up my spine. It's not to be missed.-The section on Nerval was also interesting, as were the others.Curiously, the same sort of thing seems to have affected Nerval "...Here began for me what I shall call the overflowing of dreams into real life."Both sections are excellent and Holmes' speculation that "Nerval's whole work was a form of suicide note" seems right on the mark. The other sections are intriguing as well, but these two haunted me the most.In a moment of brave self-exposure where Holmes is following Shelley's footsteps in Rome, he recounts a dinner where they toasted Shelley as a fellow-exile and his name "rang to the roof."Holmes writes, "I sat there looking at my plate dangerously close to tears.I...determined to write a book for people like them too, who would never read it, people who have lost most things except hope."-You've succeeded Mr Holmes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tremendous glimpse into the world of biographers
Beginning with a journey tracing Stevenson's walking tour in France, Holmes shows himself to be both a remarkable adventurer and writer. The thing that comes out clearly when he discovers the ruins of a bridge crossed by Stevenson is that the past is the past. And while it has an impact on the world today, it is gone. If you only read it for the first essay, it is well worth the money. The other essays explore other themes that affect biographers. A superb book that should be read by anyone interested in the mysrerious relationship between biographer and subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventure Is Key Word
I read this the spring it came out, the spring I learned that once again there would be no summer vacation, no breaking free of the time zone.As much as a book can stand in for actual experience, this did, and I got arollicking review of Romantic figures in the bargain.Holmes obviouslyconducts meticulous research, but he writes it up in a style that has thesweep of a fine novel. He is a master at marrying study and action. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
I bought this because I want to be a romance writer, and I was looking for information that would help me in this market as well as give me writing tips. It does a good job on the first count, but it was not very useful for me, a beginner, who did not know anything about writing romances. So the title is misleading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and Enjoyable
I was honestly surprised by how much I liked this book.Of all the different "how to" books I've read about writing genre fiction, this one was the most helpful and informative on issues of marketing, publicity, and self presentation as an author.3-0 out of 5 stars More for the published author than a beginner.
Unfortunately, this book deals mainly with the business-end of romance writing. While that's fine, it shouldn't be marketed as a writing book.It does have some tips for a beginner, but mostly you'll find advice formarketing, promotion, and other non-writing topics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Addictive
The single review on Amazon for this screenplay is about three words long and doesn't discuss the merits of the literature AT ALL. I'm starting to think Amazon should place word limit restrictions so reviewers can't submit comments such as, "cul movie!"5-0 out of 5 stars Tarantino

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent How-To for Romance Genre
In American fiction, 40% of the marketplace is in the romance category. Novelist Phyllis Pianka takes writers through the paces to learn about the genre and discover their niche in the marketplace. In particular I love the realism built into the section called Fifty-Three Reasons Why a Book May Be Rejected.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Source of Information
This book is a great investment for anyone who wants to pursue writing romance stories.I found it worth every penny and then some.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough!
This is a good book, but if you have never published a book before, you will need something more to go with it.I do like the part where she tells you exactly how to write each scene though. It tells quite a bit of information, but to me it's not enough! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best on the subject.
I found this book to be very helpful. The step-by-step format makes is easy to learn how to construct a romance. The author includes basics that can be applied to other types of writing, such as the elements of a scene. I have several how-tos on romance writing, and this one is the best.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not what I wanted
I found the book helpful in some respects. However, it concentrated almost exclusively on Harlequin type books, which I am not remotely interested in writing. I would have rather spent my money elsewhere, but I hate to pan itsimply because it wasn't useful to me. Although, I do feel it should bepackaged/marketed differently, as when I ordered it, I was under theimpression it would be applicable to other subgenres. ... Read more
