5-0 out of 5 stars Execllent Easy to Read
The examples in this book are great. All concepts in the text are explained clearly with many examples for the reader to review.I consider this text to be one of the best that I have used. This text is not only a great text to be used in the classroom, but it is so easy to understand that I also recommend this text for individual learning.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay if required, but
The Anton book appears to be the standard in teaching undergrad LA, but I personally didn't like it very much. Part of the problem is due to several misprints in the early chapters. Some of the definitions of basic concepts are confusing at best, wrong at the worst. I found myself relying on the Hubbard-Hubbard "Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Forms" to get through the course. The explanations were more concise and easier to understand. If you're teaching yourself, Hubbard-Hubbard is the way to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars View From a Math Tutor
I have tutored math for over 20 years and Bittenger's book is one of the best I have ever seen for taking pre-algebra students from the basics to the complex. His examples are clearly laid out, easy to follow, and they lay a solid foundation for higher math learning. This book's concepts will definitely help high school students prepare for the SATs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to understand algebra and/or trig, buy this book
As an unchallenged high school student 30 years ago, I never really put much effort into either algebra or trig and still managed to ace my tests. This lack of a rigorous algebraic and trigonometric foundation killed me in subsequent college calculus courses. This book fixed that problem, 30 years later! If you are looking for a book to challenge a motivated high school student, this is the book.I loaned it to one such student after I finished it and she very quickly completed a year and a half of high school algebra and trig in one summer and went on to ace honors calculus that fall.5-0 out of 5 stars The best math book I've seen
I'm an adult learner who has always had trouble with math. This was the text in pre-Calc.Provides (1) clear, step by step instruction, (2) uncomplicated margin exercises to reinforce basic concepts, (4) lots ofgood practical problems, (5) a sea of drill problems, (6) chapter reviewexercises and (7) chapter tests. I refer to this book regularly. I wishthese folks would do a Calculus book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely helpful and concise review / re-learning text.
As a non-traditional student of 35 returning to undergraduate university, I had tested into Calculus but as the semester progressed, it bacame apparent that the intervening years had taken their toll on my math basics. It was clear that even as I struggled to understand the new material, Ihad either forgotten my basics or never learned them well. This lack wasseriously impeding learning the new material.I finally took a reviewcourse with this book, re-took the calculus, graduated cum laude, went onfor Masters degrees, and am now working on my doctorate. This book cutthrough all the "math-ese" to understanding the basics of thecalculations, not just regurgitating the material. The authors also seem tobe able to focus on exactly where people routinely have problems in a veryunderstandable language. It is not an exaggeration to say a single book canbe pivotal in one's success. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Algebra 1 or Calculators for the Stupid?
This book pretends to be an Algebra 1 textbook, but is more of a calculator instruction manual. A child who completes a course based upon this book will be highly proficient in the use of his or her calculator, but will not have gained an iota of mathmatical skill or knowledge. If you are considering this book, I suggest you pull the instruction book from the box your calculator came in, it is just as useful and not near as heavy. On the upside, the book has lots of pretty colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book is great.I used it for a second course in linear algebra.I can really say that I understand the subject now, which I definitely couldn't before. The material is presented in a readable and yet rigorous and abstract fasion. My only problem with this book is that it leaves so many proofs to exercises and doesn't give the answers to most exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars blows you away
This book blew me away! it's just great, it really explains everything (also an axiomatic approach of determinants which is very important to gain a thorough understanding of what determinants actually mean and which will help you when you are going to study multilinear algebra, exterior algebras in abstract algebra etc), the book gives you a good insight in the stucture of linear operators on a finite-dimensional vector space and provides lots of examples and useful applications (e.g. in economics and physics). There was a comment of one customer which criticized the fact that the theory doesn't offer an explanation of quotient spaces, this is true but in fact this is not important in the area of linear algebra, quotient structures should be studied in abstract algebra, when more algebraic structure has been developed so that one can really understand what quotients of algebraic structures are about. So the book is great, but I would recommend some knowledge about polynomials, fields, algebraic closure, vector space before starting to read this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I am an undergraduate taking a linear algebra course. The course does not use this book, but my friends introduced this book to me and I simply love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Going Back to College...
I'm 35 and studying for a COMPASS test (college entrance exam for those who never took the ACT/SAT).I failed Algebra in High School, skipped classes alot, and remembered absolutely nothing, but I have a good head for numbers and logic, so I've found myself able to understand most of the concepts in this book so far.If you have no head for numbers, or feel that you aren't good with logic problems/eyeballing math questions, then you may want to also purchase the "Algebra For Dummies", as this book only *briefly* goes into each concept.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creates astrong foundation in math
Both of our kids used Saxon from 54 to Advanced Math and physics and they have done quite well with it.Although I am not a mathematician, my husband has a degree in mechanical engineering and highly approves of Saxon's format.
1-0 out of 5 stars I would hate to have had to learn math from this book.
I am nearing the completion of my PhD in physics at a major research university, so I have studied a fair amount of math in my day. All the math I have studied is geared toward problem solving and understanding how we can describe the world around us using mathematics. This, it seems to me, should be what we are trying to communicate to high school students. I have spent the last two months regularly tutoring a poor girl who is trying her best to learn Algebra II from this book that was inflicted upon her, and I think the book is a disgrace.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellence in Mathematics
I have been using Saxon mathematics for 15 years, first as a 5th-12th grade student and more recently as a tutor. This program is excellent and like one of the other reviewers I can agree that even my "average" Saxon students have significantly better mathematics skills that those students using other programs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book needs more explanations and less fluff
Book needs more explanations on problems and less "Study habit reminders" and other fluffy stuff that I just skip over. What student has time to read the "extra optional stuff"?
3-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes complex
This book covers many problems but lacks descriptive solutions. I could not get a good concept of how to solve the problems because most of the solutions were broken into several sections. This book does give some of the answers but again it does lack descriptive solutions.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't wait to get this book!
In my pre-algebra I and II classes, we used Martin-Gay's books. They were wonderful! They're easy to understand and follow with plenty of exercises.I was looking forward to using her books for Intermediate Algebra.I was extremely disappointed to find that the college switched to a different book...one that isn't helpful at all.I'm planning on using Martin-Gay's book along side our college textbook we now have.Hopefully, the lightbulb will be going on much quicker! ... My son is really getting a lot out of "How to Solve Word Problems in Algebra".He is understanding the material and applying it to his homework and tests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I'm very happy with this book.It does just what it promises:teaches kids how to solve word problems in beginning-level algebra.I wish I'd had a book like this when I was in school. It gives detailed explanations which are easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, until the last problems
If you are looking for help in understanding algebra problems then I definitely recommend this book.Inside you will find helpful hints and practice that will help you tackle a wide range of problems from distance, coins, finance, quadratics, work, numbers, etc.The Supplementary problems after each chapter are helpful, and are well explained. So if you make any mistakes in doing them you will be able to go through step by step and see where the mistake was.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasure to Read
First of let me state that I own the 2nd edition of this book, and that I am a doctoral student in computational physics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionize the way calculus is taught
This is the textbook used for the math 223/224 Theoretical Calculus and Linear Algebra sequence in Cornell University. The book is designed for prospective math students. Although the book mainly follows a rigorous development of the theories of multi-dimensional calculus, the mathematical machinery used in developing the theories is immensely broad, especially in linear algebra. The book covers most of the standard topics in a first semester linear algebra course and touches on many other areas of mathematics such as, real and complex analysis, set theory, differential geometry, integration theory, measure theory, numerical analysis, probability theory, topology, etc. The highlight of the book is its introduction of differential forms to generalize the fundamental theorems of vector calculus. The author is not the first one who follows this path. There are many other books written before this one that have similar approach, such as Calculus On Manifolds by Spivak, which was written 40 years ago and was too old to suit modern students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
This book is very helpful because when someone helps me in Algebra 2, they can read me the problem out of book then I can work it out and they can tell me whether my answer is right or not or else it would take a much longer period of time because they would have to work out the problem and then tell me the answer and it may be wrong. This is the perfect book for kids who want to learn Algebra 2.

It helped me understand Algebra in a way that I could explain to my students and that made sense! My students enjoyed the little stories that helped them remember the rules of Algebra! This book saved me! It was a breakthrough for me and I give it the highest rating. Anyone who is over their head in trying to teach Algebra will find it a lifesaver.

I would recommend this book to anyone having difficulty with algebra. My son had always done well in math, but had trouble understanding his Algebra I class and was failing the tests.I heard Mr. Zaccaro speak at a conference and bought this book.I used the book to tutor my son and his test grades went from 60s to 90s.He finished the year with a solid B average and is now one of the top students in Algebra II and easily maintains an A average. He is even able to help other students, because Mr. Zaccaro's book gave him such a good foundation in the subject. As a teacher, I think this book succeeds because it is not only informative, but it presents the lessons in an interesting, kid-friendly way.I think it's an excellent tool for remediation; however, I also think it would be great for any child interested in learning algebra just for fun, before it is taught in school. ... The problems given in this book were very easy to understand. The author shows step by step how to do the given problems and the answers are refferenced in the back. I always used how the book did the problems, not the teacher's way.I am always coming back to this book to refresh my math skills. ... Read more
