NOT Recommended
I was a teaching assistant for an introductory numerical mathematics course which used this text.It's a satisfactory text (nothing special) if you already have a basis in numerical analysis, however students which have no foundation struggle severely.

Incomplete explanations, lack of examples....
The true test of a textbook's value is whether it can be used to learn the material without the benefit of a thorough and clear lecturer.Considering a textbook's value when supplemented with a good professor isn't proper, because the professor can fill in the book's gaps, making it harder to tell whether the book is good or not.

good self-study book
first off, i'm not rebecca stack, but we use the same account. i am self-studying at home using this book. addison wesley were completely and utterly unhelpful when i asked for assistance when i first purchased the book and solutions manual. as for the book itself, i'm very happy with my purchase, although if you have no normal class/teacher resources, i would say it's essential to buy the solutions manual.
THis is a misleading title
THis text is the annotated instructors edition, which is great. (Unless of course you are trying to learn)

I really did not like this book. There is not enough examples to go along with the problems that you have to do. Most everyone in my class had the same complaint. The workbook was not required, but I don't think you coulddo the work without it. I wish the college would get a different book. I m a good student.
Let me first tell you that I got an A in Intermediate Algebra and another A in trigonometry.This textbook is ridicuosly riddled and puzzled,I read the example, and tried to follow the hard complicated question in the example. And I can tell you from heart, it is hard.I m sure the other precalculus textbooks aren't like this.Because I did some problem in the Sullivan precalculus textbook, which was easy and fun to do!I don't care if this publisher or author makes the material hard.I just hope it teaches me step by step with easy sentence that anybody can understand.Good thing that I have the student manual, or else I don't know where I'll be. Please, as an A student, I advice you professors or student to not use this textbook.Thank you.

IF LESS THAN 1 STAR WAS AN OPTION, I WOULD HAVE USED IT!
Having been a home economics major in High School 27 years ago, the last thing I needed in my struggle with college was assistance from Ms Kaseberg! This book is needlessly confusing, unorganized, and a poor showing for MsKasegerg's 30 years of experience. The chapters deal with various topics,but the exercises at the end of each chapter seem to have nothing to dowith the material covered. The book's goal of teaching problem solvingskills has failed miserably. The student is left with a different set ofproblems than were discussed in the chapter and with no clue as to where tostart in solving them. Problem solving skills may have been overlooked orminimized in mathematics education thus far, but this book does not addressthe tools needed to solve problems--it simply leaves the reader lost in analgebraic vacuum without a compass. To make matters worse, after using thisbook as a trial for Algebra II (which was a dismal failure), the Mathcommittee at my university decided to inflict equal torture on Algebra Istudents the very next semester. Publication of this book is bad enough,but it is a sad state of affairs when such a product is actually adopted asa teaching tool. I was in grammer school during the 'New Math' fiasco ofthe late 60's, and I view this approach with similar contempt. Mymathematical and problem solving abilities seemed useless when trying tomake sense of this text book. Publications like this will succeed only inmaking those of us who love working with numbers begin to hate it instead.In short, this text book is a rip off--don't buy it OR take a course thatuses it.Have mercy on us Ms Kaseberg; your 'Just-In-Time Approach' willbe the death of mathematics!

This book killed too many trees!!!!
This is by far the worst Algebra text book that I have ever seen.The text is very unclear and the author seems to be very unknowledgeable in her field.There are no explanations to how she came up with the answers thatshe got and that makes me question if they are correct.There are noinstructions available, even to the instructors.This book is a waste ofnot only money, but time also and I am ashamed that the math department atTMCC in Reno actually approved it. ... Very good book, worth the price
I got an A in my Linear Algebra class.Part of it may be due to the countless hours upon hours that I studied every week.However, the tools at my disposal helped make the quality of the time worthy.This book is another valueable tool to keep in your toolchest and I'd recommend this as an accompanyment to your class.They do a great job with Vector spaces and Determinants as well as Gaussian elimination.I particularly liked some of the "trick" questions that they stuck in from chapter to chapter (great study aid as many teachers like to stick these types of trick questions).My only complaint is that they prefer to calculate the basis of a row space by non-transposition (whereas our teacher (in our course) used the transposition technique) so I could not really go by that section (thus the **** rather than ***** review) but I can't really fault the author as teachers have their preferences as to how they want their students to calculate certain answers. Good book but without index.
This book is a good complement for any course of Linear Algebra. Outstanding book
This book contains 3000 Solved Problems (duh) for those who learn best by example.If you need to catch up on your linear algebra knowledge, or currently taking a class, this book will take the abstract concepts and lay them out in example.Some of the problems do ask for proofs (1 out of 15 or so) of certain theories.But don't let that scare you, if you don't like proofs.Practicing answering these proofs with the answer right in front of you, will not only help you construct proofs in the future, but also will also help you organize the thought processes and give you a better concept and intuition of the material.Read more

Truly a gem of mathematical literature
I knew I was going to at least smile when I read this book because of the fact that Gallian uses Beatles' song lyrics to open some of his chapters.But, I was concerned about the mathematical content.Those fears were put to rest basically the minute I turned the first page.
Wonderful Abstract Text
This is possibly the most addictive Abstract Algebra book ever. Filled with a wonderful selection of problems, Gallian discusses many aspects of groups and rings in a way that is enjoyable to study. The love of mathematics that is shown in this book is reflected by how Gallian eloquently weaves principles of group and ring theory with beautifully selected INTRUIGING problems. I enjoyed this book more than any other math text I have had.

very well written text about the algebra of standard model,
A good *first* start
This book is good for what it is, namely, something to get your feet wet.When learning the basics of particle physics, e.g. as an undergrad or a beginning experimentalist, this is the quickest way to get a feel for the standard model gauge group. What do you need more?
I'd say that, at least, the Georgi's book is too underestimated here. Read more

A very good encyclopedia of Algebra
This is the book that I read in the University for the most part of my Algebra courses, and I own it. It's a very good book that has the most important topics in Algebra (Groups, Rings, Fields, Linear Algebra over Modules) and some other topics such as Category Theory.

Winking
Concise, clear and traditionally presented main ideas in abstract algebra (if you want something more modern in algebra field I would suggest Beta Algebra by Algirdas Javtokas - this book is a bomb). Maybe you will not find here long explanations and step-by-step proofs' schemas but if I need a quick reference I look just here.

Deceptively Wonderful
OK here's the truth:This book is an awful text when accompanied by not so great prof is teaching from it (e.g. one who delivers nothing but the text). BUT... once you begin to understand enough to know that the "trivial" "exercise" and "left to the reader" proofs are quite straightforward, the book is probably the best reference in Algebra you can hope for. ... Great for studying for COMPASS math placement test
Although this would also make a nice supplement for college students taking Precalculus, it really shines as a test preparation manual for students preparing to take the COMPASS math placement test that is required in many junior colleges. It starts with very basic material on the sets of numbers used in algebra, axioms for the real number systems, and precedence of operators and then moves on to cover everything that you should have seen in two years of high school algebra, trigonometry, and analytical geometry. Plus it even has a few chapters at the end on solving systems of linear equations and even some material on partial fraction expansion.
A must for the pre-calculus student
I teach lots of math classes, and one of the things my students are always hungry for is more worked out examples.You will find tons of sample problems with detailed solutions in this easy to read Schaum's outline.As always, please try to work out the problems yourselves first, BEFORE peeking at the answers.

A lifesaver
As a computer science graduate student without the proper math background, I've been cramming mathematical concepts into my brain for the last few years.And this book, every time, has provided the most lucid, digestable and yet usefully rigorous explanation I have found for whatever concept I'm learning.The four-page explanation of Markov chains, pp. 217-220, e.g., seems very hard to top.The thing is, in CS especially perhaps, you learn to use math as a tool when you have that "ah-hah" moment of intuition.When you get the idea of what *the point* of the particular mathematical tool is.Then you can apply it and use it to think about other problems you might want to solve.Math as a way of thinking.Which is where the clarity of writing and explanation in this book comes through for you.Which is not to say the problems aren't excellent as well, because they are, and you have plenty of opportunity to practice the manipulations associated with a given concept as well.I can't recommend this book enough.

The best Linear Algebra book. ever!
This is a must have for math lovers. the book has colourful graphs and interesting equations and in addition it has interesting problems for the whole family to solve... If you're here to buy the book for your course, it has the answers in the back for those who don't understand math. Nice book to look at when you're in the Linear algebra class. Pure fun!

A Good Algebra II Book
This is a decent Algebra II book. The examples are comprehensive and detailed, but sometimes I couldn't follow with the examples. The easy, medium, and hard problems are all excellent. I would recommend this book to future algebra students.
