first edition
I have a copy of the first edition which covers Maple V release 2. While good the 2cd edition andthe latter releases of Maple Excellent reference book for Maple
I use this book as a daily reference for calculations in Maple and it is very very useful. It is very detailed where there are examples for every function almost that you can think of. We all know that there is a help within the program, which is quite useful for the introduction to Maple. However, this book enables you to raise your calculations to a higher level.I have searched for a good reference book for Maple for a while and I saw this one in library where after a week of using it I decided to buy one, a nd certainly it has not let me down yet. I do a lot of calculations in Maple and I am sure that this will be very useful for anyone who is in natrual sciences especially mathematics.All general and well known topics are full explained, such as integration, differentiation, limits, differential equations, abstract algebra techniques... and many more. The best thing about this book is the fact that it is explained in a great detail and there are examples for every Maple function, which makes it much easier to understand and actually apply.

succinct and elegant descriptions
This book is correctly regarded by many mathematicians as a definitive introductory text on its subject. Be aware that it is not well suited as YOUR first text. If you have never dealt with finite dimensional vector spaces and are, typically, an undergrad, then a more standard and longer text will be an easier read.
overrated, but still good
This book is a good reference, because it contains a lot more material than is contained in most courses, but I don't think I'd want to use it for an intro to linear algebra. It's got stuff that other books don't have, like Hilbert spaces & some analysis stuff in an appendix, tensor products, multilinear forms... It's good as a reference or supplement, but not as a main text, IMO. For an intro, I liked Axler's Linear Algebra Done Right or the Hoffman/Kunze book.

Truly this work will be a classic
This book is one of the very few mathematical, engineering, physics texts that I have come across in my 37 year career that stands out as a classic to be. I read the entire book and because it is so good, it is one of the few that I actually retained.
smooth read.
I am mostly self educated in mathematics but still had no trouble with the reasoning and topics in this book. Each topic is intuitively and rigorously explained. Quaternions are a delight, are very interesting to work with, and are suprisingly productive in use. It is hard to find a good solid text on quaternions so this book would be well appreciated to anyone interested in the subject. Brush up on your matrix algebra first, especially determinants. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in applied mathematics.

Plainest, clearest introduction around
Latitude and longitude look simple enough, at first - just put your finger in the globe, and see which horizontal line crosses which vertical. When you start doing arithmetic, though, things get weird. Measuring longitude in degrees, 179+2=-179. In degrees latitude, 89+2=89, but the longitude changes! And, when you try to figure longitude precisely at the north pole, you run into a singularity. Believe me, you don't want to be in a plane when its navigation programs run into singularities.

Excellent Book
This is a great introduction to the next stage of differential equations after a first course.Devaney is a master of presenation, and makes everything seem easy.It is not as encyclopedic as some other books on this material, such as Arnold and Perko, but it is easier to read and still covers the most important advanced material.

the two books by hirsch smale, one with devaney, seem like good books, but I am not crazy about either, at least from the few pages one can search online here.

I used this book for a Algebra II class I took over the summer at a college. Though I'm a high school student, I understood this book. The authors gave good examples for each type of problem for each section. There are 100 plus review questions for each section. Worth it!
This textbook is perfect for any learning college student.As a college math student I was forced to buy this book, but little did I know that in the long run, I'd learn alot from this book, and the materials learned stook out for a while.They stayed in my head and memory for avery long time. If you are going to move to the next higher level math, be glad you bought this one.It will help you a great deal. It's worth it!

I ordered this book thinking that it was the textbook. The book that I got not only took forever, but was not the textbook, it was only a student answer key. Another poorly written text book
The authors must be smart guys.They obviously understand alot about this subject but make the mistake that you do too! As a result, the book is inadequate as a teaching tool.
Good Introductory Textbook
It's pretty easy to get computers to do things where the answer is yes or no, or 4 or 6, given that the inputs to the problem are known. It's much harder to get an answer to a problem where the answer is that their is a 62% chance that the answer is yes. Unfortunately, in real life it's this second class of problems that predominates.

Excellentstudy guide for students of discrete math and computer science
Discrete mathematics, or the study of finite systems, has become increasingly important for students of computer science, and this book is a good foundational text on the subject. This Schaum's outline is much more complete than the average Schaum's, and it is also very clear and instructive. It is not just a good text for discrete mathematics. It also covers the basics of abstract algebra and the basics of the theory of computation.
Typical Schaum's
This is a very helpful outline whether you are taking the class and need a supplement or are just trying to learn the material on your own.The writing is clear and succinct, and there are hundreds and hundreds of practice problems all of which are answered.The topics covered are standard for the topic, so this book will cover everything in your class unless your teacher has some unorthodox lesson plan.My one caveat is that there are occasional errors in the answer keys.This can be frustrating especially if you don't feel confident in your own work.The errors are far and few between for the most part and if you can live with them then you will get much use out of this book.Highly recommended.

Lots of examples
I loved this book and am only a couple of pages shy of finishing it. I learn visually and math textbooks never have enough examples for me to learn the concepts. This book, however, is far heavier with examples than with text. I hadn't had any type of math class for 13 years and was able to move through this book relatively easily. I will be purchasing College Algebra next and am happy that it was written by the same author.

A fast way to refresh/learn algebra
I bought this book in prep for a CLEP exam in College Algebra.After being out of school for 15 years I was a bit rusty in math.I tried using a college textbook but that was absolutely brutal!The lessons were so slow and convoluted!So I switched to this book and it was like a miracle.I flew through the book and really "got" all the concepts.
Algebra Demystified-A great self teaching guide.
I am thinking of returning to school after a LONG absense and wanted to get started by reviewing Algebra.I found this book at the local library and was so impressed with it I bought it along with College Algebra Demystified and Pre-Calculus Demystified.
