5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I'm taking AP Physics C in high school and this has proven to be a valuable book. It takes time to do the problems and read his solutions. But it's worth the time. Helps you built intution.

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing a Topic?
This book was great. Elby's explanations of physics are uncomparable with textbooks'. However, I was really surprised at the fact that a whole topic was omitted from both volumes of his book. He seemed to have omitted "THERMODYNAMICS," a hardcore topic of physics. I thought that was unbelievable, but hey what can I say? Only 1/3 of my upcoming physics final will be on THERMODYNAMICS. Blah!

3-0 out of 5 stars He explains the principles clearly but
At times the font size for an equation appears to be about the half the font size of the other equations on the page. This happens sporadically in the book. Also, some of the labeling of the diagrams have an even SMALLERfont size. This is annoying. Very annoying when you end up looking at theequation several times. The irony is that I took this physics course whileI was in the navy via correspondence. The above was on the syllabus ofthing not to do!In the end I can say this book helped me pass the coursewith a "B". He does show you how to approach a problem differentways.Andthe tests he has on the book ... excellent. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Calculus, Single Variable, Student Solutions Manual
I bought this Student Solutions Manual as your website suggested along with Calculus : Single Variable. The solution manual was the third edition while Calculus, Single Variable was the fourth edition. You need to correct your website because the solutions manual does not match the text book.I did return this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money for a voluntary root canal!
This book is so pathetically minimal that I award it...1/10 of a star.(It may be useful in starting a fire in your fireplace...maybe).DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS SOLUTION MANUAL!It only includes about everyother odd solution, and most of the time, it shows just the (oftenincorrect) answer. The worst part is, that same answer is usually in theback of the textbook! It is definitely not worth even $5.00, so save yourmoney! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars best book to learn measure theory from
this is a great, clearly written book that excels as a book to learn analysis from.the book takes a ground up approach, starting with only the positive real line and generalizing from there.being presented in the most simple context where all the abstraction is stripped away, the essence of the arguments is laid bare and thus the proofs are as understandable as possible.then, once the arguments are made and the intuition is in place, the book proceeds to generalize the results to more abstract circumstances. thus makingthe motivation for using more powerful tools clear.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best real analysis books
For the past two semesters, our professor used this book as textbook. I didn't buy this book during that time. But when I was preparing for the final exam, I borrowed the book from library, and found it was really well-written. Basic materials are well organized and explained. Some profound and important topics are also covered, like Hardy-Littlewood max function; these materials are also explained in a clear and easy-to-follow way. Thus I decided to buy this book to prepare for my Real Analysis prelim and as future reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars A (quasi) masterpiece
4 stars, which actually means 4.5. I don't rate it the maximum, because I think it lacks a couple of things to be perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conquering Math Anxiety
I found this to be an exceptional book.It provides excellent practical strategies to be successful in math.It covers everything from psychological/personal blocks that may hinder students from learning math to practical success strategies that students can apply immediately.I especially enjoyed the discussion on learning styles and the accomodations that can be used for better understanding of coursework.I found the chapters on positive self-talk, conquering test anxiety and study skills very helpful as well.Every math teacher should have this book on their shelf! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It adds up...
We use this book, `Precalculus with Limits' by Aufmann, Barker and Nation, as the two-semester sequence at our community college for College Algebra and Trigonometry. Most students at our college do not go on to Calculus, as our two-year degrees do not require that; however, they do need a solid grounding in topics such as trigonometric functions, analytic geometry, and advanced algebraic operations for the technical programmes of electronics, drafting, and other such degrees that emphasise technology and mathematical precision.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a superb book
This is a rewrite of the great book by Courant, and it does justice to its origin.I prefer the somewhat more charming original book of Courant myself, but I have taught from this one too and learned something more.
5-0 out of 5 stars More than an introduction
Those books (volumes 1-2) can be seen as a new edition of Courant's classical Differential and Integral Calculus, volumes 1-2 (that can still be used for general calculus courses). The first volume was written while Courant was still alive, and the second was postumous. I believe that they are the best work to start understanding analysis. Indeed, for the general scientist (as a physicist) it contains all the theory needed for any application. The book is not easy reading though. Much of the text can be understood on first reading, but there are pretty profound sections, mostly on the appendixes, that turn the book genuinely onto a book of analysis. The second volume requires some mathematical maturity, and I doubt whether it is suitable for beginners, but it is simply the best book of multivariate calculus that I know - and it is really difficult to think of a better presentation. Courant was a giant, and his concept of mathematics shines in every page of those books (although he did not see the publication of the second volume, his hand can be seen in every page). For the serious mathematician, a must-have. For the beginner, the best way to get in love. Courant and John don't lie, they give every proof and guide you most gently in this complicated garden called mathematics. I'd give it aleph stars if it was possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful!
I give 5 stars to this book because in contrast with the majority of the calculus textbooks it gives the reader the perfect combination between rigor and intuiton. Another thing that I also like a lot is the fact that volume 2 has solutions to almost all the excercises, which is great because some of the problems are very difficult. I really think this book is a "must have". ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Some good, mostly bad
I had to laugh when I read the Univ. Of Mo. review because 3 years later its still true! The book gives very basic (pre calc) explanations but its examples are much harder and nearly irrelevant to the explanations. And the review section? Forget it. It's like explaining riding a bike then handing you car keys.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not that helpful for trying to teach yourself
This book assumes a knowledge that not everyone will have.It has an algebra/pre-calc review section, but the review is very basic (ie what an exponent is). The problems require you to remember about negative exponents and cube roots and whatnot.2-0 out of 5 stars Yeah, maybe on the cover
I used this book for my high school curiculum and will use the exact same book in my collge calc class. And I have enough experience to say that, although this book seems to be user-friendly, it is by far not.The layout is relatively simple, however is not very in depth. Additionally, this book smashes together several large topics together with very little explanation. This lack of explanation, in turn, makes some of the problems practically impossible due to the fact that you haven't seen any problems like them before. All in all forget this book, and pay attention to your instructor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A start in analysis.
A start in analysis.-- For some number of years, Rudin's "Real and Complex", and a few other analysis books, served as the canonical choice for the book to use, and to teach from, in a first year grad analysis course. Lieb-Loss offers a refreshing alternative: It begins with a down-to-earth intro to measure theory, L^p and all that...It aims at a wide range of essential applications, such as the Fourier transform, and series, inequalities, distributions, and Sobolev spaces,--- PDE, potential theory, calculus of variations, and math physics (Schrodinger's equation, the hydrogen atom, Thomas-Fermi theory... to mention a few.) The book should work equallly well in a one, or in a two semester course. The first half of the book covers the basics, and the rest will be great for students to have, regardless of whether or not it gets to be included in a course. This choice of book is also especially agreeable to grad students in physics who need to read up on the tools of analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent course of analysis with a theme
By the end of the sixties Dyson and Lennard, for the first time, proved that matter is stable. More precisely, they proved the thermodynamic stability of Coulomb matter. This was a landmark of mathematical physics, and a huge one: a very long and hard paper. A few years later, Elliott Lieb and Walter Thirring substantially improved the great Dyson result, dramatically cutting its length while improving important estimates. A very good review of these results can be find in the volume 4 of Thirring's "A Course in Mathematical Physics". Even the book version is a bit hard to read, as much mathematical analysis is required. The "Analysis" of Lieb and Loss is a book on analysis which has as a theme the great result of Lieb and Thirring. It is a real book on analysis. The chapters are named "Measure and Integration", "Lp-spaces","The Fourier transform", "Distributions", but also "Potential Theory and Coulomb En! ergies" and "Introduction to the Calculus of Variations", where nothing less than the Thomas-Fermi atom is rigorously studied. In order to leave no doubt that hard analysis is present, there are two chapters on Inequalities. After studying this splendid text the reader will be a better analist and, if he cares to, can start reading the proof of stability of matter. The proof of the pudding is NOT in the eating! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A five-star book
I was appalled at the poor reviews this book has received. It3-0 out of 5 stars Assumes too much from the readers
This book consists in brief review of the fourier transform and a few applications. The brief review in the first two chapters is ok Only the essentials are given and the proofs are omitted. The problem starsts with the applications. There are applications to difraction of light to information theory and so on. However too much is assumed from the students with respect to those applications .After reading the chapters the students , i suspect, will ask what they have learned.A little more material explaining what the applications are about would improve the book a lot.It is almost useless in the present form ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Good for beginners of linear algebra like myself. Good book. good logical sequence. would be better if proofs are shown more rigourously.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book with the right Teacher
This book is quite good as an introduction to linear algebra with a nice mix of proofs and computational exercise. It has two main fault both of which can be corrected by a good teacher. The first is the horrible graphics (everything is in shades of gray and blue) that make it very hard to use them to supplement the text. The second is that in some sections they use non-standard notation for certain items and without a teacher to explain this you will not be able to understand what they are trying to say.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used this in my undergrad course as a math major at UT Dallas. I really enjoyed it; the book has sections on applications in just about every chapter, and there are lots of computational exercises as well. In addition to answers to odd-numbered exercises, each chapter has a "self-test" with all the answers provided at the back of the book. It's a bit chatty, but that befits an undergrad text.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
I bought a Student Solution Manual in the hopes that it would contain solutions that supplement the text. However, this book only contains the same solutions that are in the text, the only difference being explanation is provided on a few of the problems for each chapter (usually the more involved ones). If you are looking for solutions to check your work for the even problems, this will not help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Real Analysis
Lay's book is my second favorite book on introductory level real analysis--please see my review of Elementary Analysis by Kenneth Ross.Ross somehow covers a lot more material, and quite a bit more clearly than Lay, BUT, the first two chapters of Lay's book covering axiomatic set theory are wonderfully written.I particularly love the clearly written coverage of the paradoxes contained in the Fraenkel-Zermalo Axioms, in Particular the Banach-Tarski paradox which states that a solid sphere of radius A < B can be cut an pasted into a sphere of radius B. Then, from chapter 3 onwards, Lay and Ross pretty much follow each other, Lay being more wordy than Ross, Ross being far more clear than Lay.
5-0 out of 5 stars good to go
The book arrived in good condition and I have not had any problems with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a good first text
I bought this book because I have been looking for a Introductory analysis text that isn't too advanced, but yet doesn't gloss over the essential stuff, and I found it in Lay's book. For the self-studier, this book is excellent!I have several books on analysis: Shilov, Kolomogorov, Rosenlicht, Ross,etc...For the beginner, this book is superior to all of them.A plethora of examples. Also, a good range of problems:from straight forward problems requiring only the use of a definition to more advanced problems requiring a little thought. If you already have had some Analysis, then this book is probably not for you. But, if you are a student who wants to learn Analysis on your own, then this book would be hard to beat. After this book, one should be able to tackle "Papa Rudin".For according to Rudin, all that is needed to study his "Real and Complex Analysis" tome, is the first seven chapters of his "Principles of Mathematical Analysis".This book covers all that Rudin covers with the exception of Riemann-Stieltjes integration. On the whole, this is a great start! If proof-based math is new to you, then you will appreciate the first chapter on proofs.Would have given five stars, but I would have liked to seen Riemann-Stieltjes integration. That's really only nit picking, though. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars +ve multidimensional analysis -ve atrocious binding, 1-dimensional analysis could've been more detailed
This book was used in my Analysis I class. I later had to prepare again for my masters certifying exam on Analysis and the primary reason I didn't use this book, even though I owned it, was the binding. By the end of my analysis course, it was practically in individual pages. The binding is atrocious - how can a $100+ book just be sort of glued together weakly that it falls apart after 1 semester of use.
3-0 out of 5 stars it's quick
I received it far more quick than I expected.
