5-0 out of 5 stars Infinite in all directions.
I have used the book, teaching a beginning course in wavelets, and it went over well with the students: they like that the proofs are clearly spelled out, and that the presentation is systematic. I supplemented it with S Mallat and Y Meyer's books. That was to give the course a more algorithmic slant. However, I feel that there are many valid approaches, and that the subject is infinite in all directions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction for Wavelet
For those who would like to learn the beauty of Wavelet theory, which is a great finding in Mathematics, this book would shed some light on it. Wavelet is elegant, a simple formula leads to so much interests, theapplication of Wavelet is everywhere, particularly in modern communicationsand signal processing, and there is still more waiting for people toexplore. Enjoy the new journey. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
This book is astonishing.Since purchasing a copy in 1989 I refer to it very frequently, so that the dustjacket is worn thin from use.I'm not aware of another reference to equal it.I'm in awe of the scope of knowledge of the authors in bringing this amount of information together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Atlas of Functions - In case of difficulty, start here
The depth of knowledge shown by the authors who emphasize computation of functions is amazing.By presenting their coded functions in concise and easy-to-understand English, as opposed to Pascal, GAT, Basic, Focal, Forth, Fortran, C, Macsyma, or IDL - to name a few I have had to learn - anyone can easily code programs in their favorite language for many decades. 5-0 out of 5 stars Graphics and explanations are excellent.Code is weak.
For someone interested in functions, this book is a must have. The graphics are excellent. The explanations are excellent. The pseudo-code is clearly the product of persons who are not programmers and should not be used. If you write function libraries or mathematical software of any sort, this book is something you really ought to own.But please, code from the formulae. A & S "Handbook" Cody & Waite "Elementary Functions" Spannier & Oldham "Atlas" Each belongs on the nightstand of a serious Numerical Analysis math freak. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars concise but clear
Sivia offers a brief but thorough explanation of how to use Bayesians in data analysis. He illustrates with important examples that commonly often arise in the sciences. As in estimating the true amplitude of a signal in the presence of background noise. These days, for anyone in a lab sitting next to an electronic gadget acquiring data, you can surely emphathise with this problem.
5-0 out of 5 stars A gem.
This tutorial on Bayesian data analysis is a gem: very terse, yet explaining the concepts very clearly, giving many insightful examples along the way. This is achieved within only 180 pages by focussing on understanding and intuition instead of mathematical formalism. After reading this tutorial, the reader will be familiar with the way of thinking in Bayesian statistics. The tutorial thus encourages the reader to get more independent from the (conceptually more complicated) cook book statistics with the associated risk of misusage. When reading this book I felt as if a whole jumble of more or less unconnected pieces of statistical wisdom was finally falling into place within the Bayesian framework.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bayes' Theorem made simple
This is an excellent tutorial for the both the beginner (undergraduate) and more advanced scientist.Sivia takes the reader through several examples with simple and conciseexplanations.I have used many of the examples discussed in the book as starting points for problems that I have encountered in my work.I would recommend giving it a try... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I had the privilage of using this book for my calculus course as a senior in high school.I am now in college and very often refer back to this text because it is so comprehensively written. The book is easy to understand, but still covers a great deal of the very broad subject of CALCULUS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not shaby
It's actually a rather good book. My high school class just covered this book from top to bottom this year and has prepared us for the AP test quite well. The lowest score on our practice tests is a 4. The rest of the class get's4's or 5's. Our teacher is good, admittedly, but the book has also been detrimental to our success.2-0 out of 5 stars Calculus: Lacking in Content
After two full semesters with this book (and looking to start a third with it), I feel that the book is lacking in thoroughness and detail. This book is thinner than other calculus books I've seen, which may be appealing to calc I students but is detrimental for those going further. Some of the techniques shown in the book are very thorough and are described in a step-by-step manner. Other techniques are covered way too quickly in order for you to see exactly what is happening. The homework problems at the end of each section are too few to be of any real help. When you do a couple of problems and feel like you might know what is going on, they move on and give you problems that refer to another part of that section. I also bought the student solutions manual hoping that it would help unravel some of the mystery that is calculus. But again I was disappointed. The same lack of thoroughness pervades the manual; some answers are shown step-by-step while other answers skip steps, change forms, are worked and then changed back. Both the textbook and manual make assumptions about what the reader knows and/or how the reader might be trying to tackle the problem. If you have to use this book then I highly suggest getting REA'S Calculus Problem Solver. It was more helpful at times than the textbook! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value...
Ok, not everyone needs to (or wants to) know calculus of variations. But if you are among the ones who, this is a great book to get started with (assuming you are in grad school and have a decent handle on calculus and some basis in dealing with differential equations). The text is clear and concise, and the financial investment is minimal.A good buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly written--highly important subject
The key idea behind classical mechanics is the calculus of variations, and classical mechanics variational formulations are the basis of quantum mechanics and quantum field theories be these based on the Schrodinger picture, the Dirac picture or the path integral picture.Fomin's well written intro. text, filled with good examples, is well worth your time.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad book
This book is not helpful. There are no answers to problems.Symbols used in the problems are not explained. It is difficult to learn unless you have someone explaining the concepts for you.I would not buy this book now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written !
This is a very beautifully written book on complex analysis. It is not very easy to read though, especially if you've never been exposed to the subject before. Most proofs are clearly presented, and can be easily understood by the mature reader. Other proofs require filling in the gaps to get the whole picture. As far as problems go, there's a list of relatively easy exercises at the end of each chapter. Following the exercises is a list of problems which require some head scratching. Overall, I had a fun time reading and learning from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem
In reviewing a textbook, one should consider the background of the book's audience.I believe that this text by Stein and Shakarchi on complex analysis is outstanding, and is appropriate for a student who has the background of a course in real analysis at the level of Rudin's "Principles of Mathematical Analysis".

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks current and expanded problems:
I recently purchased this book for a discrete math class I was attending at UMD. This was no help in practicing iteration, induction, or summation. The only good point about this book is that it gives plenty of examples for visuals (i.e. set theory, graphs, and trees).

5-0 out of 5 stars Reviews the field and Enforces problem solving abilities
Computer science has been the primary catalyst transforming the status of this once-obscure field of discrete mathematics into state-of-the-art information, and required knowledge. Switching circuits, programming languages, expert systems and their underlying logic, to name but a few computer-related topics, each rely upon the results from this field as a foundation. There is a proliferation of books on graph theory, discrete mathematics, and even set theory and mathematical logic, for this reason.4-0 out of 5 stars It's helpful!
The problems in this book were arranged the waythat leads readers understand simple conceptsfirst, then bring you to problems and applications. In addtion, my professor Dr. Mott (he wrote one of the topselling discrete book) recommandedthis book to me as well. I found itVERY helpful. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars will need supplimentation
Of course this book assumes (advanced?) knowledge of Calc 1 & 2 as well as linear algebra and preferably Dif. EQ. These are all prerequisites for the course in which the book is used. That being said, it is quite annoying when the book *completely* skips over intermediate steps involving calculus leaving the student scratching his head.I find myself with my nose more in my Calc. books trying to figure out what the steps leading to the answer rather than learning Num. Analysis. Would have been nice if at least some intermediate steps were added to most problems, but hey, this is college and hand holding should not be assumed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe i'm just biased...
I'm biased because i had the good fortune to take Intro to Numeric Analysis from Ken Atkinson himself.I beta-tested this edition of the text, so my copy is in a loose-leaf binder.1-0 out of 5 stars it makes numeric sense
i had the pain to use this book for my undergrad. coursework for a 200 level class at Cal Poly.Contrary to the other reviewers, i believe the exercises are mediocre, and the material presented lack depth to provide a solid grounding to numerical analysis.Codes are inconveniently written in fortran-97? instead of the more readable pseudo-code. It may provide a good application supplementary for engineering students, but i strongly advise against it for mathematics undergrads. No fun. Lots of handwaving and smoking mirrors. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good study guide
The Text book is great and the problems are fun. Unfortunately with the volume of problems that need to be solved and practice the study guide is needed. This study guide is essentially a glorifyed answer key that is found int he back of the book. I found the study guide to be a major disappointment, very thin, eliminated key steps and did not agree with the form of the answers some of the final solutions.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is volume 2.
Larson and company does a great job in their books, which is why so many schools have begun to use his text books.I find it very easy to understand once I do more problems, however, you need the solutions and study guide for the problems worked out to all the questions. This page is really for volume 2 of the study and solutions guide.I figured that out after ordering several of the volume 2 books. That was frusterating. The picture you see clearly states volume 1.

2-0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment!
When I was in pre-calculus I found the Student Study and Solutions Guide for Algebra and Trigonometry by Dianna Zook to be indispensable. I learned more from it than I did from the text book. Unfortunately Diana Zook did not write this solutions guide. This book is written by the authors of the text book. I would say that 75% of the time that I refer to this solutions guide, I come away empty handed. The problem is that the authors of this book skip too many steps and this usually includes the step that I am having problems with. I think their theory is that you should remember everything that you learned in algebra and trig and shouldn't need any help from the solution guide doing those steps. Sounds like a good theory but, unfortunately, that's not the way it is in real life. The answers to the odd problems are in the back of the text book and this isn't much better than that. My suggestion is to save your money and find help from other sources. My suggestion to Houghton-Mifflin is to let Dianna Zook write the next calculus solutions guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and informative book
This book provides a comprehensive overview of wavelet transformmethodologies and applications. The emphasis is on practical applications which are illustrated with many detailed figures and examples from Science and Engineering. A particular interesting chapter on medical applications is provided. In the introductory chapters, Addison gives a clear account of the theory for both continuous and discrete wavelet transform and associated post-processing techniques. Unlike many of the other books in this area, Addison communicates the concepts with a level of detail, sufficient for the applied engineer and scientist, but without becoming bogged down in a fog of mathematical gymnastics (a feature of many of the books in this area). A welcome addition to the growing number of books on this important signal analysis technique. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars You will know how to do it, but you won't know how to explain it
First off, this book adequately teaches you differential equations. It's clear and concise - all except for one thing.WHERE ARE THE EXPLANATIONS!?Each section just jumps into examples without first explaining important concepts.I tried to find out exactly what a Laplace transform was, but all the book told me was that it was similar to a derivative, they both transform one function into another type of funciton.YEAH, THANKS.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not that bad...
I used this text for a Diff eq/Linear algebra class. It's not as bad as most people are saying. However, I have not seen any other differential equations texts, so I have nothing to compare it to. Granted, the material is challenging, but I think that is more of the setup of the course: we had to get through this entire book, and an entire Linear Algebra text (authored by Nakos and Joyner) in one semester. Now on to the review:
1-0 out of 5 stars W O R S T book I've ever used
This book is horrible, I am one of those guys that read and solve the examples before starting the exercises; even they were solved in class. I like to get the concept perfectly but with this book is impossible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text, all around
I learned pre-calculus from this textbook, and now I've been with a youth math program that uses the book for 3 years. This pre-calc book is excellent and is the first book that was of actual use to myself when learning new material.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent text
While I have not taught from this book and have not gone through the entire text, from what I've seen this is an excellent text.
