first book devoted to orthogonal arrays
This book is a great collaboration. Hedayat is a statistician who has been a major developer of orthogonal arrays for statistical experimental designs, Stufken was a student of Hedayat who has worked with him on this research. Sloane comes from the mathematics of codign theory where he has developed orthogonal arrays to produce error correcting codes. Excellent..except for.....
The three authors have done a superb job of conveying their message. However, I feel that the book is a little over-drawn and long. It is still an excellent example of the supreme books that Springer releases.Congratulations to this BRILLIANT trio!

Do not be mislead by the positive reviews; this book is mediocre
This book covers basically two topics: Graph Theory and Enumeration.
Excellent for applications
The book covers the fundamentals of graph theory and combinatorics (enumeration) and is designed for first courses for undergraduates. An almost ideal introduction book to combinatorics

Interesting read, the book having being written before the computer revolution is very apparent to this younger reader.But it still seems very relevant.Was good back ground for getting into the field.

Good Text
This text is an excellent introduction to the subject, as it will give the reader a solid base of the main ideas in combinatorics.However, I rated it with four stars for two reasons.One is that the authors sometimes use nonconventional notation, another is that there are occasional typos.Other than that I highly recommend this book.

Hope this is a 1st edition error...
looking at the sample pages, on page 3, it said 5! = 60... I may not know anything about combinatorics, but I do know my factorials...

An excellent treatment of mathematical methods for economist
The monograph covers advanced mathematical methods for economists. Itincludes chapters on general topology, topological vector spaces, Rieszspaces and Banach lattices, measure and integration, etc. While the bookdoes not contain (hardly) any economics, the mathematics coveredisselected under the aspect of later applications to economics. The bookcontains for example a long chapter on correspondences, a topic which ishardly covered by any standard math book. The presentation of themathematics is throughout clear and precise. The advantage of the book isthat it covers a wide range of mathematical topics, which could not befound together in a book before. Intersting Studies Hampered by LEDA and LP Dependencies
I'm pleased with the text in this book; the descriptions are almost all clear, and reading through the book gives me insight into some more interesting problems in trees and graphs. The high points of the book are its treaments of tree and graph isomorphism, but I also found the discussions of non-traditional traversal algorithms on trees and graphs very interesting. The author discussions leaf-first, breadth-first, and depth-first traversals and provides algorithms for their implementation. Many of the algorithms include correctness proofs.Read more

At the university I am attending Johnsonbaugh's book was a required text for a subject introducing discrete mathematics. Unfortunately, like many others it seems, I was less than impressed with the books ability 'teach', or even reinforce what we had just studied in lectures. I went looking for another book, not so much as a replacement for Johnsonbaugh's book, but as an additional reference/study aid. Amazingly comprehensive

Excellent book on web publishing via Cocoon
Excellent book!. Introduces Cocoon as a web publishing (and integration) framework that it is. Shows nicely how to use xml-based technology to create web-sites like portals that integrate external and internal data sources without writing any java code. But the book also explains the internals of Cocoon for java developers so that those who want to extend its functionality can do so (by writing appropriate java modules). Overall it made me understand the -significant- powers of the cocoon project and its overall scope too. So, to recap, the book is very easy to read if you have basic knowledge of xml and java, and it explains what you can and cannot do with cocoon: a framework for building web-sites that mostly deal with publishing documents. In that sense, cocoon can be used to create robust portals or document management systems or even more general content management systems (Lenya).

Please please please... if any author wants to write another cocoon book make it as updated as you can. I got two cocoon books (I guess everyone knows what they are since there aint a lot of them around!).In a weeks time I was up and running.But then it was announcedXMLForm and JXForms have been removed from the 2.1.x distribution flushing all efforts down the drain. Dont get me wrong.Good books... Only outdated.

I was happy with this book after reading the first few chapters however after I got stuck into Cocoon I discovered that it was not suitable as a reference. I couldn't find information on XML fragments or i18n. The index isn't good at all. The information may be in there but you will have to read the book from cover to cover to get value from it. Worst Textbook I've Ever Had
I had this textbook in my undergraduate Discrete Math course.I have never written an Amazon review but I feel the need to in this case.The reviews I could find deal with the Czech version and are glowing.The English translation is not useful for those who are trying to learn the material for the first time.
