4-0 out of 5 stars Suitable for a graduate level course
While most computer science departments require their students to take calculus, with few exceptions it is a skill that they will not use. The mathematics used by computer scientists is almost exclusively discrete in nature. In fact, assumptions concerning continuity can often lead to subtle errors in programming, the laws of algebra do not universally apply in computing. This book presents most of the key ideas of discrete mathematics applied to computing and the coverage is thorough and detailed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for data structure algorithm complexity.
This excellent reference has numerous examples, definitions and exercises covering trees, graphs, linked lists etc. This book provides a great companion to any data structures text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good overview of combinatorial optimisation
Combinatorial Optimisation : Networks and Matroids by Eugene Lawler examines shortest paths, network flows, bipartite matching, non bipartite matching. More importantly there is an excellent introduction to matroid theory including matroids and the greedy algorithm, matroid intersections and matroid parity problems, some of these Lawler's own results.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Problems, Too Many Mistakes
I used the book to guide me through a Combinatorics class I took in the summer of 1998. The author has presented some very interesting problems like prove that of any 10 points chosen withen an equlateral triangle ofside length 1, there are 2 whose distance apart is at most 1/3 that usesome interesting techniques such as the pigeonhole principal. The book, however contained too many mistakes. My professor said on average there isone mistake per page and he wasn't exagerating either.Luckily with hishelp, we corrected the many mistakes and then were successfully able to usethe book.I notice that the author has written a new edition.I hope mostof the mistakes have been corrected because when I pay a good sum of moneyfor a book I expect it to be good book without errors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The right place to look.
Integral equations has become (I don't know why) a somewhat misterious subject. I've heard physicists say "I have enough with differential equations. Why to study more complicated types of equations?", or"I have enough trouble with differential equations; please don't tellme there's something else", and even "Why to study integralequations? What are they good for?".Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! One of my favourites!
This book gives a very concrete intro to Galois theory & field theory & would be an excellent supplement to an advanced course on algebra. It has some group theory in it but its emphasis is on field theory because its focus is ONLY on Galois theory & its applications, so you'll have to find another book on general abstract algebra. But for Galois theory this text really helped me out with its fairly concrete treatment. Look at this to get a more tangible version of more abstract stuff. Each chapter has a bibiolgraphy at the end of it & each one is a goldmine for interesting stuff about abstract algebra, history, numbers, etc.(...) One could also think of this book as a jumping-off point to all kinds of other stuff it scratches the surface of.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the field (pun intended)
Hadlock writes in a brisk, thorough style, leaving no stone unturned in what I believe to be an excellent introduction to the subject. I bought this book as an undergraduate student, upon completion of the first course in modern algebra, and it has proved to be an indispensable tool since. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A concise catalog of theorems and conjectures.
This is a highly technical book that gathers together in one medium-sized volume (less than 300 pages) hundreds of new and classical theorems and conjectures on every conceivable type of graph coloring problem. It is primarily a mathematical treatment in Theorem-Proof style, although the proofs are left to the references (otherwise the book would have been enormous). The book consists of many short sections, each one often less than a page, formally stating a theorem or a conjecture, then briefly summarizing what is known about it, and where the results have been published. As the authors state in the preface, "We did not intend to write a textbook to be read from beginning to end, but rather a catalog suitable for browsing". It seems they have achieved what was intended; it's quite interesting to simply browse through this book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in the beginning chapters
"Logic for Mathematicians" starts well, giving clear and formal explanations of formal logical systems and the predicate calculus. There are plenty of examples in the book, many of which clarified difficult or poorly worded definitions.I have been using this book recently to help me understand concepts that are much more tersely introduced in Elliott Mendelson's "Introduction to Mathematical Logic".This latter book may be better for it's later proofs (e.g., Godel's incompleteness theorem), but the early explanations of how the formal systems work is more easily understood from "Logic for Mathematicians".I gave it only four stars, though, because it becomes a bit less readable later on.3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good self-study book, but lots of typos
I bought this book as a self-study guide for mathemetical logic. It contains a thorough treatment of propositional and predicate calculus, and briefly covers related subjects such as set theory and Goedel's incompleteness theorem.Overall it is fairly good, presenting the topic in a clear concise manner. The low (for a math textbook at least) price and the fact that it contains answers to selected exercises make this a decent choice for a self-study guide. The only problem I had was the fact that this book contains many typographical errors (I have the 1988 revised edition), which can be somewhat confusing in the the early sections of the book and extremely confusing in later chapters, which are difficult enough. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Elegant and coherent, but a bit dry and unmotivated
This book is elegant and accessible, with a coherent presentation, but is a bit dry and unmotivated. The book would benefit from more applications, which should not be hard to find. I felt like Chapter 8 was the high point of the book, with a discussion of random walks, a matrix-tree theorem and invariant field theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lattice Theory Uber Alles?Begin here
A set with, at minimum, one binary operation is a groupoid. If a situation involves an equivalence relation or some sort of symmetry, some sort of groupoid applies. If the set has, at minimum, two binary operations, and one operation distributes over the other, you have a ringoid. Ringoids, which include the real field we all use every day, tell us much about number systems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction and something more
This book presents an excellent introduction to the subject, but also goes beyond that, presenting with a fair amount of the detail the theory of Priestley representation. The excercises start at the basic level ofchecking the understanding of definitions, allowing the reader to buildconfidence out of the practice. The fact that Priestley herself co-authoredit is definitely a plus. ... Read more
