2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book
The only reason I bought this book was the fact that I attend the school that Dr. Loshin teaches at, andthe problems are similar to that which are on the tests. There are many mistakes in the book and I think we HAD to buy the book so he can make a quick buck... Anyways, it is very brief and doesnt go intothe physics behind optics (just the general theory) which is good for being an optometrist... just have some one know whats what they are talking about look over the book to find the mistakes...

4-0 out of 5 stars A good workbook to understand geometric optics
Easy to understand and lots of sample problems to follow along as you try to understand equations. At the end of the chapters, there are 20-30 problems with answers. Unfortunately, the questions at the end of the chapters do not have an explanation of how they came up with the answer, but it's not hard to figure out. This book is great aid for first year optometry students. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Canned methods, sloppy....
THe credentials of the authors speak in bounds... Drexel University and Georgia Perimeter College???!?!?! GPC is a 2-year. Anyways, all that aside, the presentation of the material is horrible. Obviously, the background of these authors is that of 1,2,3 methods, with absolutely no concept of any concepts behind the material. The problems/examples are unrelated to the material in the chapters, and no preparation was given to answer them. Our professor even said that he emailed the writer to change the wording in a few questions, the writer agreed wholeheartedly, and yet the question remained in the next edition....5-0 out of 5 stars A fine and useful book.
I have never been a math wizard, but I really enjoyed this book, and have kept it around because it is so helpful. 2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult, Innacurate, but Topical

4-0 out of 5 stars An introduction to some advanced theorems on graphs
The author has spent most of his professional life pondering some of the more substantial problems in graph theory. This book is not a comprehensive treatise on the subject but an organized collection of a series of lectures that he delivered in 1984. The lectures were just as much an attempt to provide insight into the process that led to some advanced theorems as about the theorems themselves. For this reason, the book is best suited for the beginning graduate student with some experience in the field. 5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the mind of a great mathematician
It is unquestionably that W. T. Tutte is today one the greatest mathematicians in the world. I read this book with great enthusiasm because the author explains, with the work that made his fame, the most difficultpart of the discovery of mathematics: The creativity involved.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this is about directed graphs not graphics
Because graphic methods are very popular in statistics, when you read the title you might think this is a book on the use of graphics in statistics. That is not what the book is about. The directed graph on the cover might be a hint for some. The book deals with the theory of undirected and directed graphs which has applications to causal modeling in statistics and the development of expert systems (which Edwards claim are now more commonly referred to as probabilistic networks). 4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
I don't have read all the book, but I read most of the scientific papers it is composed by. I think they are very interesting and puzzling, on the border line between serious mathematics (game theory and all this stuff) and "recreational math" (like the angel problem). It would be a good read also for people interested in computer games.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book is full of beatiful work.Every section is an investigation into some combinatorial game, or some idea in combinatorial game theory. Most of the material is clearly presented and all should be accessible toundergrads, but be warned: this is not simple stuff. But, as we all know, beautiful mathematics isn't always simple. The book also includes asection with 52 unsolved problems, which should be of considerable interestto the curious.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unusual reliance on text rather than equations
As a regular reviewer who reads the books he reviews, I am beginning to find a routine sameness to many of the books I examine. This holds for introductory logic, some areas of which have not changed for thousands of years. In many cases, it has become so routine that it is very hard to read the books, and to solve this problem I have adopted the solution that I read approximately ten pages at a time. Most books covering this material are a sequential listing and proving of the fundamental theorems. Correct, but hardly a point of differentiation between books. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a better understanding of cryptography
This boook is not an introductory one although it could be read by almost everyone. It cover many facets of cryptography as randomness, zero knowledge proofs and interactive proofs. It also gives a good background of this ideas.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent survey

5-0 out of 5 stars readable
proofs are very detailed almost pedagogic. the author always points out the goal first then digs in. the only flaw is its visual presentation - rather condensed type set. i think Pontryagin was a truly educational teacher. good for self study.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cheap classic by one of the masters
This book covers, as the title says, the foundations of combinatorial topology. What that refers to, essentially, is the topology of polyhedra and the machinery of simplicial homology groups. The first part of the bookestablishes the basic facts about these topological spaces and aboutabstract complexes as well. The second part shows the topologicalinvariance of simplicial homology. The third features applications of thematerial to fixed point theory.5-0 out of 5 stars A great little book
This is a beautiful little book on a very pretty subject. Lev here develops very comprehensively the basic properties of polyhedra, as well as many of their basic applications. The first chapter is spent on basic topological properties of these spaces, with some applications todimension, very explicitly set aside from the main development. The secondchapter focuses on proving the topological invariance of the Betti groups, with applications of the techniques used-again carefully set aside-todimension theory and Brouwer's fixed point theorem. The third chapter, titled Continuous Mappings and Fixed points, has as a goal proving a simplefixed point theorem. Some simple constructions and concepts of algebraictopology, such as homotopy and the cylinder construction, are introducedalong the way. Unfortunately, not too long after the publication ofthis book, the author began to devote his energies to applied mathematicsand preventing Jews from polluting Russian mathematics-but don't let thatinfluence your possible purchase of this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An essential component of all mathematical libraries
Until I read this book, I had no perspective on the number of significant constants there are in mathematics. Finch describes in complete detail a large number of constants of interest in mathematics, I didn't count how many are covered, but a list of one per line covers twenty four pages. It was also interesting to note that twelve of the pages list constants between zero and one. I couldn't help but wonder if this cluster represents a bias of the author or that mathematics is somehow naturally biased into this interval.5-0 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic
This is an instant classic of mathematical exposition, a superb addition to the series Encyclopedia of Mathematics and Its Applications. Steven Finch's engaging style and lucid, self-contained essays on an amazing variety of topics will appeal to a wide audience. Beginners and experts alike will find a treasure trove of stories, unexpected appearances of numbers, connections between different subjects, and unsolved problems (e.g., if x is the square root of 2, is the tower of powers x^x^x irrational?).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic in Combinatorics
This is the book from which I learnt Combinatorics theErdosian way. One of the most pleasing qualities of the book is the bite-sized chapters. Perhaps this is one of the first books to start this trend. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Gems of Combinatorics
This book provides an excellent introduction to a wide variety of extremely active areas ofcombinatorics. It focuses on the "gems" of the field -- proofs and results which aresimultaneously deep, central, and beautiful. 4-0 out of 5 stars Shorter not simpler
This is a cut version of Hodges' _Model Theory_. The content that remains is mostly unaltered. The only significant new material is section 9.5 on Morley's theorem, which was previously in the exercises of section 12.2. Also, the end-of-chapter references and historical notes have been replaced by suggested readings, the phrasing has been tightened here and there, and the harder problems have been cut. From most of the chapters that were cut, key sections were saved and inserted elsewhere, making for a lot of rearranging. It's too bad the big text is so expensive, because a lot of interesting material was cut.

5-0 out of 5 stars Previous Review Suspect
This is a highly regarded text on model theory, which is a branch of mathematical logic. What model theory is NOT is ". . . what is(sic) sounds like: mathematical models (of the physical and mathematical worlds)", which is a quote that appears in an earlier review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This textbook is an efficient condensation of Hodges's bulkier and moreleisurely "Model Theory". As such, it excludes some of the"fun" topics in the larger book as well as the nice bibliography. On the other hand, it is a truly excellent textbook for model theory and,in fact, for logic (for those with some idea of what *that*is.)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only one of many such books that could be written
What is incredible about this book is not that there are over one hundred pages of unsolved problems posed all or in part by Paul Erdos. The amazing thing is that the word graphs could be replaced by several other mathematical words or phrases and a similar book could be written. Erdos was an expert in so many areas of mathematics and perhaps his greatest ability was in putting forward just the right questions to just the right people. There is very little explanation of the problem proposals, the authors rely on a great deal of the listing of references to fill in the details. Therefore, anyone interested in exploring the problems in greater detail should be prepared to spend some time and effort in tracking down the relevant articles. Fortunately, the authors themselves did a great deal of that, as there are complete references for every problem that appears.Read more
