5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Synthesis of Combinatorics, Geometry, and Algebra
With his usual lucidity, Fulton brings together the surprisingly wide area of mathematics concerned with Young tableaux. These are combinatorial patterns which index basis vectors of group representations (either of the symmetric group or the general linear group). These vectors can be seen as Plucker coordinate functions on non-linear representations, namely homogeneous spaces (Grassmannians and flag varieties). Thus, Young tableaux form an invaluable tool to examine these representations and varieties in concrete detail.Fulton also gives a good exposition of the combinatorial operations on tableaux which reflect the crystal basis structure from quantum GL(n), though Fulton does not explicitly discuss quantum groups.Other good expositions of these topics, from a more algebraic and combinatorial point of view, are Sagan's newly revised "The Symmetric Group", and Stanley's "Enumerative Combinatorics", Vol 2. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO UNUSUAL MATHEMATICAL TOPICS
This book (and the author's companion book GROUPS AND SYMMETRY) are both worth getting. This one introduces Graph Theory, Surface Topology and Knots while the other one introduces Groups, Border Patterns and Wallpaper Patterns. Both books provided a guided approach through exercises, and both books have exceptional bibliographies, and suggestions for further experimentation. (My inability to visualize or deal with Knots is not the author's fault, however.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Intellectual Treat
This is such a wonderful book. If you are interested in mathematics but aren't a mathematician this is the book for you. While reading it and working through the problems I really had the feeling that I was doing real mathematics vs just walking the dog type problems. I think this book is just as good if not better in some regards to Jeffery Weeks popular and excellent book The Shape of Space. After reading this book you will really understand some Topology,Graph Theory, and Knot Theory. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and unique perspective on combinatorics
When one thinks of combinatorics of finite sets, he or she might first think of codes and designs. But this book introduced me to an area of combinatorics which I knew very little about, namely extremal set problems and their solutions which fall under famous Theorems by famous mathematicians: Erdos-Ko-Rado, Sperner, and Kruskal-Katona to name a few. I found these topics fascinating and fun to think about, which is in large part due to the author's coherent style, organization, explanation, and expertise of the subject-matter. Moreover, the author provided solutions to *every* one of the 150+ problems!!! How many math books can boast such a claim? Aside from may be a rough presentation of Lemma 4.3.2 the rest of the book is a masterpiece which I hope will gain more recognition within the next twenty years. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I m a good student.
Let me first tell you that I got an A in Intermediate Algebra and another A in trigonometry. This textbook is ridicuosly riddled and puzzled,I read the example, and tried to follow the hard complicated question in the example. And I can tell you from heart, it is hard.I m sure the other precalculus textbooks aren't like this.Because I did some problem in the Sullivan precalculus textbook, which was easy and fun to do!I don't care if this publisher or author makes the material hard.I just hope it teaches me step by step with easy sentence that anybody can understand.Good thing that I have the student manual, or else I don't know where I'll be. Please, as an A student, I advice you professors or student to not use this textbook.Thank you.

2-0 out of 5 stars good but not good
the speed @ which i received the book was great, the book was great in great condition too but i didn't get the correct edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Room for improvement.
I have a BS in mathematics and I found this book---both as a student and as a tutor---to be less-than helpful for calculus preparation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ideal for self study
Excellent book, carefully chosen examples, ideal for self study. I like it very much. My advice is not to skip any section or solved examples or you might be lost.

1-0 out of 5 stars Maybe it's just me
I find this book lacks explanation at many points, to where I couldn't understand thw way the author presented a problem, a subject, etc... I almost feel like the target audience is to other college professors, and not students of the subject.I also don't like that a lot of the harder problems at the end of the sections are even numbered, so that you don't have a way to see how they are worked.I don't really feel the book warrants just one star, but since most people in my class don't care much for the book, I am confused to all of the great reviews on this web site and felt I needed to show the contrast that my class experienced with it.I think the book requires a good instructor to help you get through it, in contrast to the comments to others who have said it's good for a self learner.I am also enrolled in Calculus 2 and Linear Algebra, and the books I am using for those courses are FAR superior to this one. and I have missed a few class sessions in those two courses and am still running a high B and a mid A in those courses.I wouldn't dream of missing a class in the Discrete Math class because I feel too dependant on the instructor's explanations.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book on discrete math
This is an excellent book for self study. However, there are parts in this book that must be rearranged or deleted. For example, I think Catalan numbers should be deleted. This might be useful for the matrix chaining problem, but that's in the realms of algorithm design (specifically in dynamic programming). Also, I do not understand why Grimaldi sandwiched in a chapter on Finite State Machines between two chapters on Functions and Relations. Maybe he should make a section on languages for FSMs, but I recommend Sipser's Introduction to the Theory of Computation if you want to learn about FSMs. ... Read more
