4-0 out of 5 stars first edition
I have a copy of the first edition which covers Maple V release 2. While good the 2cd edition andthe latter releases of Maple5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for Maple
I use this book as a daily reference for calculations in Maple and it is very very useful. It is very detailed where there are examples for every function almost that you can think of. We all know that there is a help within the program, which is quite useful for the introduction to Maple. However, this book enables you to raise your calculations to a higher level.I have searched for a good reference book for Maple for a while and I saw this one in library where after a week of using it I decided to buy one, a nd certainly it has not let me down yet. I do a lot of calculations in Maple and I am sure that this will be very useful for anyone who is in natrual sciences especially mathematics. All general and well known topics are full explained, such as integration, differentiation, limits, differential equations, abstract algebra techniques... and many more. The best thing about this book is the fact that it is explained in a great detail and there are examples for every Maple function, which makes it much easier to understand and actually apply.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, ...but...
Wonderful way of introducing a VERY powerful tool like Maple. However, a tool is exactly what it is; nothing more, nothing less...our own "grey matter" still has a lot to say. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Proprietary source the Achilles' heel for non-students
I first bought this text in 1994 while doing scientific programming for graduate school work. A fellow graduate student had suggested I use an undocumented routine that (I later discovered) came from Numerical Recipes (NR). I was impressed enough with NR's presentation of ideas that I also bought the example book ISBN 0521437210 (which I've hardly cracked since) and a diskette of source code (which cost as much as the book but worth it). I was able to do a lot of basic research quickly with NR code, and I still occasionally use NR's routines.4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Tool for Programmers, Researchers, and Students
This book contains hundreds of "canned codes" in the FORTRAN language. The book provides several variations of many popular numerical techniques and provides the most stream line (comp. time) codes available. Most codes allow for optimization to be build in, such as an RK4 (4th Order Runge-Kutta) with variable steps sizes.Great if you don't want to write your own code for a subroutine, or it you just don't know the method well enough to write it yourself. The book also provides some basic explaination of the techniques and codes with is very helpful so that the code is less of a black box, although its not that detailed.5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible, a classic in the field
This volume, and its companions for other programming languages, is an absolute classic. The authors strike the right balance between cookbook solutions and theory, so that most of us get just enough background to choose the right algorithm but not so much to get drowned in theory. This edition is the first devoted only to Fortran, but is the second edition published by the authors. It includes a number of additions and corrections, many of which appeared in Computers in Physics (now the journal Computing in Science and Engineering published jointly by the IEEE and the APS). My only criticism is, where were these books twenty years ago when I needed them? I would recommend these books to anyone involved in the application of numerical methods. They are tremendous time savers.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Book that didn't meet my expectations
Algorithms are my specialty, and I'm really interest in everything that is connected with them. This is one of the few books from the field of algorithms that I was a problem to read. I found this book hard to read because of several reasons.
3-0 out of 5 stars More work should be done in proofs
Overall, the authors explain core concepts, the examples and the possible applications well. However, the readibility of their proof is far from that of the above three. Honestly some proofs should be re-written completely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellentstudy guide for students of discrete math and computer science
Discrete mathematics, or the study of finite systems, has become increasingly important for students of computer science, and this book is a good foundational text on the subject. This Schaum's outline is much more complete than the average Schaum's, and it is also very clear and instructive. It is not just a good text for discrete mathematics. It also covers the basics of abstract algebra and the basics of the theory of computation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Typical Schaum's
This is a very helpful outline whether you are taking the class and need a supplement or are just trying to learn the material on your own.The writing is clear and succinct, and there are hundreds and hundreds of practice problems all of which are answered. The topics covered are standard for the topic, so this book will cover everything in your class unless your teacher has some unorthodox lesson plan.My one caveat is that there are occasional errors in the answer keys. This can be frustrating especially if you don't feel confident in your own work. The errors are far and few between for the most part and if you can live with them then you will get much use out of this book.Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Introduction to Mathcad 2000" misses the mark!
I believe a book entitled "Introduction to Mathcad 2000" ought to be an orderly exposition of the basics of the Mathcad 2000 program and progress on to more complex areas with meaningful examples. Exercises for the student ought to emphasize concepts and demonstrate the use of the program with answers supplied to reinforce correct usage. This book falls far short of the above goals. The book starts immediately with a sample calculation that does very little towards explaining the overall view of Mathcad 2000. The second chapter starts with a 2 page diatribe on global warming which has nothing to do with Mathcad 2000. In the following chapters, the author dos a fair job of covering some of Mathcad 2000's abilities but the examples used are often not well explained. The practise exercises do not have answers or in many cases, do not indicate what point the author is trying to make. Many pages are devoted to long, involved problems that are not suited to teaching Mathcad. In all, The book is only moderately useful as a reference but poorly suited as a Mathcad 2000 text. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive overview of computational geometry
This book, written by many well-known experts in the field, is a fine compendium of articles on the most active areas of computational geometry. Each article is supplemented with a glossary of terms needed for understanding the relevant concepts and frequently contains a list of open problems. An overview of the convex hull of a collection of random points in Euclidean n-space is given in one of the articles on discrete aspects of stochastic geometry, where also a very interesting discussion of generalizations of the Buffon needle problem is given. 1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
This book epitomizes the common flaw in higher education today-expecting that an "expert in a field" makes them an "expert teacher".Bull.This book is written by someone who has decided to write a book 6 levels above the education of their readers just so they can prove a point at how smart they are.I'll bet Johnsonbaugh is the kind of guy that just stands at the board writing his notes that he could just give to you, just so he can hear the glory of his own voice.I have taken 4 semesters of calculus as an undergrad, as well as various science graduate courses and am LOST when reading this book. This book may be good for math "majors," but for people looking in other fields (Computer science, for example) it is terrible.
1-0 out of 5 stars No Good
This book is horrible. He doesnt define the words that a bolded either. Most of the time he uses the proofs themselves to define a word. That doesnt help anything especially when the proofs are confusing too. It seems like when he explains something, he is really saying the same thing over and over again. It is impossible to understand this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst text book ever
My university requires this book for the discrete mathematics course.I have to tell you, this book teaches you absolutely nothing! The author barely explains things. And when he does explain things, he explains them as if the person reading already has an indepth knowledge of advanced math. There is no explaination as to how he arrived at answers at the back of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genetic Algorithms in Search, Optimization, and Machine Learning by David E. Goldberg
Excellent book for Graduate students and instructors. Highly recommend!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the only paradigm for evolutionary computation
This book gives a good introduction to genetic algorithms for a general undergraduate audience. However, it is important to note that it does not cover Evolutionary Strategies, an approach to evolutionary computing that I have found quite usefulsince it is specifically designed for Euclidean space optimization problems where many if not most interesting optimization problems are formulated in (take for example the problem of determining the weights of a neural network that minimizes the network's overall classification error). Nor does it cover evolutionary programming (not to be confused with genetic programming). So after reading this book, I recommend (for the mathematically adventurous) Thomas Back's "Evolutionary Algorithms in Theory and Practice: Evolution Strategies, Evolutionary Programming, Genetic Algorithms"
2-0 out of 5 stars Read a review article instead!
I agree with another reviewer who said the book was unnecessarily long.Genetic Algorithms are a great programming tool, and there are some tips and tricks that can help your programs converge faster and more accurately, but this book had a lot of redundant information.

4-0 out of 5 stars You want this, even if you don't know you want this.
Steven Skeina, Calculated Bets (Cambridge University Press, 2001)
5-0 out of 5 stars For Both Jai Alai and Computer Enthusiasts
This book documents a simple computer program written by the author to exploit statistical advantages made through the Spectacular Seven scoring system for jai alai. The book is a well written summary of the author's interest in the game which lead him to this project.Like the author, I was an avid jai alai fan in the late 80s before the player's strike destroyed the game. The author matched his interest in jai alai and programming to lead graduate students to write subroutines for a Monte Carlo simulation computer program which won him money before he claims to have abandoned the project. The author is a gifted writer for an otherwise dry text as he keeps reasonable amount of humor and style which maintains your interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mathematical modeling done right
To knowledge seekers, the ability to understand and beat a system is the entire game. In this book, Skiena describes how he and some of his students wrote a computer program to win money betting on professional jai alai matches. Along the way, he explains the origins of the game and some of the basic rules, the fundamental bets that can be made as well as the meaning of statements such as pari-mutuel betting. His program does work well, in that he quadruples his money in a short time. Once that is done, he gives the money to a university charity, hoping to make his money from writing this book.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks current and expanded problems:
I recently purchased this book for a discrete math class I was attending at UMD. This was no help in practicing iteration, induction, or summation. The only good point about this book is that it gives plenty of examples for visuals (i.e. set theory, graphs, and trees).

5-0 out of 5 stars Reviews the field and Enforces problem solving abilities
Computer science has been the primary catalyst transforming the status of this once-obscure field of discrete mathematics into state-of-the-art information, and required knowledge. Switching circuits, programming languages, expert systems and their underlying logic, to name but a few computer-related topics, each rely upon the results from this field as a foundation. There is a proliferation of books on graph theory, discrete mathematics, and even set theory and mathematical logic, for this reason.4-0 out of 5 stars It's helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good reference
I used this book in my Data Structures class. It has sample problems with solutions in the back of the book so you understand what they were talking about (unfortunately, I cannot say the same for a lot of data structures texts) The sample problems were also good for review for an exam. This was one of the few Computer Science textbooks that I have actually kept as a reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars CS Professors Love This Book.CS Students Hate It.
If you are seasoned in the ways of computer science and mathematics, you will probably love this book. However if you are new to the concepts presented in the pages of this book, you will probably hate it. It is particularly bad once you really start getting into the meat of things, around chapter three. The examples and explanations are utterly terse.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the best, but close
Although there is now consensus over the coverage in a first course in discrete mathematics, the level of difficulty one finds in books for this audience has a wide range. Some opt for the basic approach, with very little rigor, and anything labeled as a proof is either trivial or an advanced waving of the hands. Notational complexity is kept to a minimum, which is fine for the beginner, but limits the value as the student goes on into more advanced courses. On the other end, there are those where rigorous proofs abound, it reads more like a book for traditional math majors rather than one largely designed for computer science majors.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on Monte Carlo
Jun Liu has been a prominent researcher in MCMC since the mid 90's.His research has contributed a great deal to the development of Gibbs sampler, sequential Monte Carlo, weighting/importance sampling, missing data, and MCMC related applications in Bioinformatics. Not surprisingly, this book has them all, plus many other interesting topics. The final two chapters review some of the theories. This book has a strong flavor in statistical physics, which I like very much.It also contains some applications in, for examples, engineering (e.g. nonlinear filter, sequential Monte Carlo), biology (DNA sequencing), image analysis (clustering) and stochastic optimization.

If you learn by example rather than by formalism, get this book. This presents the material in a logical framework with LOTS OF EXAMPLES. A companion volume is "The Mathematica Handbook", also by the same two writers. I used these books extensively in grad school. I remember standing in the university bookstore for 30 min comparing the handful of books available on Mathematica and these two books won out then and now still cover the fundamentals well. I still use them in my work today.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Mathematica book I've seen
The thing that makes this book great is that it lives up to its title and actually demonstrates practical approaches to using Mathematica. It covers the topics I've seen in other books and many that I haven't seen in other books like optimization and file IO.5-0 out of 5 stars Takes the first book and elevates learning of Mathematica
Nancy and Colin have brought forward a Mathematica text of exceptional ease in learning. This text is current and has the same easy flow of information that has become the hallmark of this duo. It is well writtenfor a self learning experience or can be adopted to a class setting. Ofspecial note is the presentation of programming techniques, the book startswith the basics and continues to build the readers ability with Mathematicaprogramming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. A must have.
As a mathematical hobbyist, I love Mathematica(TM). Also, I love the Lisp programming language. This book, at last, opened my eyes. Now, after some years, I finally can say what "programming Mathematica" is. If you really need to learn to programming in Mathematica, this book is for you. A big thanks to the Authors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Omissions
Please note that the book does NOT cover Object Oriented programming as stated on this page in the description - in fact OO is not even in the index.

4-0 out of 5 stars The 3rd Ed.is based on Mathematica 5.1
This book is an excellent introduction to Mathematica. It is based on Mathematica 5.1 and hence bring the 2nd Ed. based on Mathematica 2.2 up to date to the most recent version of this software package. The book covers all aspects of programming functionalities available in Mathematica: procedural, functional, recursive, rule-based, and object-oriented. There are ample examples in science and mathematics as well as devising one's own software packages. The emphasis of the book is on the fundamental programming concepts. While there are examples of complete packages that solve specific problems more emphasis in this direction would even further strengthen the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math Toolkit for Realtime Programming
Book is good and useful. Rational fraction, Numerical intergration, dynamic simulation and state vector cover in detail. Appreciate your selling.
2-0 out of 5 stars Falls short of expectations
I have yet to find a book that explains "complex" math algorithms well and give clear coding examples that follow. This book is no exception.I suppose after reading some of the other reviews, I had high expectations for this book, but it failed to deliver.
5-0 out of 5 stars Embedded Programmers bible!
Math Toolkit for Real-Time Programming is simply the best focused book on the subject of doing maths on microcontrollers, eg PIC 8051, AVR, PSOC etc with limited resources.
