5-0 out of 5 stars a perfect example of "literate programming"
I read 2nd edition of the book. "Programming in Mathematica" (PIM) is certainly a classic work (in programming style) for writing Mathematica packages. I also think it as a perfect example of literate programming in Mathematica, if you are trying literate programming in Mathematica.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winner of the 2006 Mathematical Association of America Beckenbach Book Prize
"Thoroughly engaging... Accessible to a very broad audience... While the theorems covered may not be new to research mathematicians, I would wager that very few of us have seen them proven in quite this way." -- American Mathematical Monthly [http://www.maa.org/reviews/reallycount.html]
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding exposition
I was introduced to this book by a talk that one of the authors (Arthur Benjamin) gave at the MAA Mathfest in Albuquerque in August of 2005.The talk was one of the very best mathematics talks that I've ever attended.Everyone in the audience could follow what was going on, and we all left with an understanding of the basic approach to combinatorial identities used in this book. The authors' approach is to prove combinatorial identities by defining a quantity and then obtaining different formulas for that quantity. One formula becomes the left hand side of an identity while another formula becomes the right hand side.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely author
I haven't read this book yet, but I have a signed copy after seeing Jenny Quinn speak at the 2005 meeting of the Northwest chapter of the Mathmatics Association of America. If her written work is anything like her speaking, then this should be a great book. Her combinatorial proofs are an interesting approach to old equations, and she presents them in a very clear manner.A most enthusiastic lady. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great book
Dr. Biggs' book is an excellent introduction to discrete maths--I used it for the first term and part of the second term of his "Introduction to Pure Maths".The book reads the same as he lectures, which, while sometimes creepy (it's like he's talking to you), is a very good thing. It is very well written and explains everything clearly. He has plenty of worked examples to illustrate how to use what he has taught as well as exercises (w/ answers in the back of the book) for students to work out for themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars I have to study it
I like it, but I think there are better ways of teaching Discrete Maths. I can tell you that you discovered me the difference between Calculus and Discrete Maths. That's cool!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing collection of ideas but terse in explanation
On a first reading, this book looked horrible. Little explanation is given. Well, the author gives you just a clue for you to do a lot of brainstorming to understand the concepts. While this helps to put you right in the mood for the material, since most of it are highly intellectual, but I think some more explanation and insight would have helped anyway. And actually it would have helped a lot. Instead of relying on each reader's understanding, giving more clues and more explanation means more insight for the reader and more getting the big picture. The big picture here is so important since many of the concepts in this book are highly interrelated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Probably one of best arithmetic books
This book is a fantastic book on digital computer arithmetic that covers the basic algorithms. It covers basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in an easy-to-follow manner.A must-have for those concentrating on digital computer arithmetic.
1-0 out of 5 stars It is a horrible textbook

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Pure' Mathematics has been slow to embrace computers
High end mathematical theory has veered away from actually doing arithmetic because most of the problems being addressed required a tremendous amount of calculation and that calculation was difficult in the days of only pen and paper. About twenty years ago the advent of big/fast computers (by the standards of those days) began to allow the ready solution of these problems without requiring large numbers of people doing the computing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Intuitions and experiments come first; rigorous proofs later
If one peruses the mathematical literature for the last one hundred years one will notice that in most cases no diagrams or pictures appear. The level of rigor in all cases is impressive though, but unfortunately this makes the understanding of the results much more difficult. There seems to be an inverse relationship between rigor and understanding in mathematics, at least for those who are new to the subject at hand. In order to gain this understanding, the drawing of pictures and diagrams is useful, along with a certain amount of experimentation with the concepts at hand. Intuition, how mysterious, and however ill defined, plays a role in both the understanding of mathematical results and in their discovery. Many mathematicians do not want to acknowledge this, as a visitation to a typical conference will readily verify. The attitude has been expressed that mathematics has "always been abstract" and therefore that pictures or diagrams violate its spirit. Even a well-known geometry center whose goal was to use sophisticated computer graphics to visualize complex mathematical objects lost its funding, to the consternation of a few but with glee to most.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
This book is simply the best compendium of the mathematical basis of computer science

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I took a math class with Rodrigo Cardozo, based on this book and it really taught me how to use propositional calculus while applying it to computer programming.
5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars, of course!
We have used this book as a text for discrete math courses in our undergraduate Computing Engineering and Systems program (University of los Andes, Colombia). There are a lot of advantages using this approach instead of the classical one (e.g., people really learn to prove and learn to write correct proofs).

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential to the efficient use of Mathematica
Iin terms of speed and functionality, the program Mathematica is the most amazing program I have ever used. It is an indispensable tool for research in many areas of the sciences and mathematics. From the evaluation of mathematical formulas to the graphing of three-dimensional data over time, it can handle almost anything that you need to process or analyze. Surprisingly user-friendly for such a capable program, it takes very little time for even a novice to put it to productive use. However, with all that capability there is a problem with the sheer number and detail of the options, which is why the documentation is so critical. While there is extensive online documentation with Mathematica that is easy to use, there is still a need for the documentation in physical form.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Accessible Multigrid Introduction...No, Really, I Mean It
Mathematicians who write well are a rare commodity.Briggs is one of them.He has the ability to break down complex numerics with understandable prose making concepts accessible to non-specialists.He operates under the rare assumption that his readers weren't born knowing this stuff. This multigrid primer written with Henson and McCormick is no exception.Expository discussions are lucid, compact and informative; examples and plots are helpful and well selected; and pseudo code is well documented with corresponding outputs to verify understanding. If you are embarking on Multigrid from scratch this short (if somewhat pricy) primer is worth the time and money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Multigrid
Anyone with some background in applied mathmatics should find this book accessible. It is well laid-out and focuses on algorithms as opposed to mathematical proofs. It is ideal for someone interested in multigrid methods but who doesn't want to get lost in lots of mathematical theory. It doesn't cover cell centered methods, which is somewhat limiting, but other than that it was useful and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic andcomplete
It does a large review of the basis of combinatorial optimization.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic in Combinatorial Optimization
Combinaorial Optimization is one of those rare books that is an instant classic. The authors weave a readable fabric of intuition and theory that is unmatched in this exciting discipline. The choice of topics covered begins with two fundamental optimization problems, namely, the minimum spanning tree and shortest path problems. Next, maximum flow and minimum cost flow problems are discussed, followed by matching problems, polyhedral issues arising in combinatorial optimization, and the famous traveling salesman problem. The text concludes with chapters on matroids and NP-Completeness. The exposition on these topics is very well written and the proofs are rigorous. There is a terrific blend of theory, algorithms and applications without overwhelming the reader with computational details. The authors also do a good job of developing an accurate historical perspective of the material, most of which evolved during the time period 1955 to 1995. The book is suitable for an upper-level undergraduate, or a graduate course. The exercises are very well thought out and are at an appropriate level. I have taught undergraduate courses in combinatorial optimization for over 10 years and have always struggled to find an appropriate text. My problem has now been solved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant one, but not a lot of details.
This book was thoroughly written by great-minded Masters. It is well-organized in their topics and presentation. However, the book details is unbalnced, some chapters are overwhelm the data, and some others areinsufficient. By the way, I graded this book a Very Good one. Worth Reading!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From insight to cutting edge research in information theory!
This book really motivates me to learn information theory and to discover the insight given by the subject.I had no or very little background on information theory before I took Professor Yeung's course. Now I am deeply interested in the subject (Of course, you do not need to take the course in order to fall in love with the book). The book may not be a no brainer, but its clear explanations of the concepts and mind-opening analytical examples easily led me not only to understand the subject very well, but also to realize the close relationship between math and information. That's the greatest part of the book.Later chapters in the book introduce many cutting edge research results in the subject which gives me a lot of ideas for research directions. If you are serious about learning information theory, this is the book you will love.Cover and Thomas book "Elements of Information Theory" is also good, but it is a bit less insightful (i.e., it is really a "text-book" :)), and the explanations of concepts are a bit on the shallow side.I suggest to use it as a reference to Yeung's book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but not great
As some of the other reviewers mentioned, this book is lacking in some critical details. I am only about 120 pages into it and have found some parts to be very confusing, particularly when it comes to the sequence of operations. Unfortunatly there are not many books about Rhino so I felt cornered into buying it. Do not pay full price to get a new one. I paid $8.00

2-0 out of 5 stars For beginners only
The best thing about this book is it's colorful cover; the contents disappoint. When compared with a top-tier technical book such as the excellent "AutoCAD Bible", it is poorly organized, it's examples are confusing, and many explanations are downright befuddling. One example: one draws in viewports similar to AutoCAD's.The default layout is the standard Top, Front, Side (left or right), and perspective. The actual drawing entities are either established with the pointing device or entered as X,Y,Z coordinates via the command line.So far, so good. However, using the mouse to add entities to an existing object in 3D space yields unexpected results because Mr. Cheng has neglected to tell you that unless you pick the object using OBJECT SNAP, your entities will be drawn on the viewport's default construction plane which is at the origin. You overcome this by moving the construction plane through space to the location where you want to draw, but this crucial bit of information is inexplicably withheld until page 437!
