5-0 out of 5 stars Coherent and Useful
This book does a good job at introducing some of the most interesting combinatorial problems in monomial resolutions.Although their chapter on toric varieties is somewhat weak, most of the other chapters (square-free monomial ideals, Borel-fixed ideals, staircases associated to monomial ideals in three variables, etc.) are very well written with challenging and revealing exercises at the end. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Second Review of Dr. Hein's Book
Now, since I took two terms of classes that used Dr. Hein's book, I had internal urges to write emails to Dr. Hein and praise him for his book and his lab manual (but I never did wrote to him, though). Instead, I decided to write to a broader audience, here at Amazon. I found the book ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, a Holistic Bible of Computer Logic so to speak, for every CS student. I have read and re-read the book and still reading it today, during the Summer Break. I scanned the whole book with a flatbed scanner because I needed to look things up often even as I studied other courses at Portland State University. I also highly recommend Dr. Hein's Prolog Lab Manual which guides you through the experiments designed to help understanding the Book's material. Marvelous Lab Manual, Dr. Hein! It is my opinion that Doctor Hein has a profound vision of where Computer Science is going and that's why he designed his Book and his lab manual this way. The Book and Lab Manual helped me tremendously to understand recursion and logic.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This is an excellent book! Easy to read and understand. I am an "A" student, at Portland State University and I think that people who wrote bad reviewes of this book did not read the book (just like they might read every 50th page of any other book). Bill Gates once said that every person is born to be able to understand only up to a certain level of abstraction. Just like some of us are born to be able to lift 500 lbs. and some only 50 lbs. In addition, a person has to have some background to be able to understand more advanced topics. The book is most excellent.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not very good.
This book makes a better door stop, than a academic text book. Having taken the classes at PSU I know this book front to back. The dosent really explain the subjects well, the book as a whole lacks focus. The first half of the book is horribly written, and abismal when actually compated to a discrete mathmatics, and/or group theory book. So much so there is a bit of a running joke about it in the math department. I would recomend to any CS student to avoid the text book and study from a regular math book instead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging and useful text on an important topic.
Combinatorial algorithms are widely used in a diverse set of applications areas from engineering, the biological and physical sciences, mathematics and computation, economics, and so on. In addition to their applied nature, combinatorial algorithms often rely on sophisticated results incombinatorics and algebra and on clever data structures. This makes thetask of introducing the multi-faceted world of combinatorial algorithms adifficult one.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book that fills the gap
As a doctoral student in Finance, I use Matlab a lot for modeling and computation.I had been searching for a reference book that can help me build simulation models using SIMULINK. But the only books available are in specialized fields such as physics or engineering. Patrick Anderson's book attract me immediately by its title. A combination of MATLAB, SIMULATION, GIS and Economics-- that's exactly what I was looking for. It managed to keep up with my high expectation with its highly informative content. The examples given were very well selected and close to application, corresponding Matlab code were neat. It kept surprising me with bonus tricks in using MATLAB(such as getting yahoo stock time seres directly using Matlab, creating XML files), which themselves are well worth the price. I recommend this book to researchers or analysts who want to stand at the frontier of business evaluation, and those who want to exploit the power of Matlab in business forecasting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to multifaceted simulation analysis
This book appeals to me for several reasons. It discusses sophisticated methods of valuing business enterprises, and critiques competing models with a matter-of-course approach. The reader is given the perspective and reference to related work. Pitfalls of prejudiced and lackadaisical estimation are shown with neat examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent instruction and reference
Anderson's book is equal parts course and reference guide for using Matlab and simulation models for business and economic analysis. It offers material for both those who have a strong understanding of the programs (though may be relatively new to economic, financial, or market analysis), and those who are just getting started with the program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good.
I liked this book. After taking a discrete math course some time ago then promptly and deliberately forgetting as much as humanly possible about it. I am going on to get a masters degree in computer science. The professors love discrete math so some work involves writing things out mathematically. I am not a math oriented person unless that math pertains to what I am currently working on, 3D graphics, Neural networks, etc.I was able to fly through this book feeling like I picked up a lot of useful information and it will serve as a simple reference. This isn't the 'be all end all' of discrete math it's a simple intro/refresher, of the core topics, which my discrete math professor must have glossed straight over to get to the "fun stuff".Fun for math nerds maybe, but when I was called on to reproduce this knowledge outside of that class most of what must be demonstrated is the basic core stuff.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too Brief and Too Simple
From reading the above reviews, I assumed the book was a good source of information to help me understand the materials being covered in class. There are some useful information in the book but it didn't cover 50% of the topics that were went over in class. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great and simple introduction to Discrete Mathematics
If you've read other textbooks on Discrete Math and had as much trouble as I did following them, then this book is for you. It covers the material well and is easier to follow then most other books on the subject. Plus, the price is right! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book which helped me tremendously
This book tremendously helped me understand computers and their relationship to mathematics and helped clear about doubts all through the semesters in college that I studied computer science. I strongly recommend this book to anyone majoring in computer science, information technologies, computer programming, etc ... as this book serves as a pillar to understanding the fundamentals of computer hardware and software.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cheap and good book
The book is pretty much suitable for students who has finishedhigh school maths but requires revision on maths for computing. A few chapters are simple enough for students to run over quickly. There is asupplementary questions and solved questions with working for student tounderstand and practice on. Overall the book is good enough to refresh yourmemory on computer maths.

1-0 out of 5 stars very poorly structured
For a start this book is never intended to be used by itself but as a supplement,so any attempt to use it as a textbook will only reslut in frustartion. Furthermore its not geared to teach as many VERY importantconcepts are simply ommited and the author makes far too many assumptionswhich all results in an incomplete book. The book attempts to cut studytime but also ends up cutting too much in clear and sufficent explanations.Use this book once you have completly mastered whathever topic you areinvolved in,and even then its only good for the practise problems at theend of each chapter. All in all DONT buy this book if you are trying tolearn something...use it ONLY for reviwing and just as a supplement. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Location Models
I am a PhD student in Operations Management and this is one of the best books in Location Management. Very clear and very precise, I did not need a class to understand the material. Its definitely a must for any body who wants a background on Location Models

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive math model of location and network
This is the 2nd best book after Ahuja et.al. book (Network Flows : Theory,Algorithms, and Applications, 1993).As I said, it's the 2nd best book -sodon't be surprised if you found Ahuja's book more useful. However, Daskindid good job to compile both location and network analysis in a single textbook. We can see many issues in these areas in this book.I'd love to seemore integration both math model and algorithm in this book though. If youdon't have Ahuja's book, you may wanna grasp one (it's out-of-stock) beforegetting this book. However, if you are new to do research in location andnetwork, grasp Daskin's book. You won't be disappointed with this book! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not For Undergraduates
This book should not be used to teach an Introduction to Optimization at the undergraduate level. It is being done so at my school, and it is driving the undergraduate students crazy because they do not understand the book, the notation also is causing problems. If you are new to the subject area, and do not have an advanced math background(more than college) try looking elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars took the class, liked the book
Drs. Chong and Zak are Professors of Electrical Engineering at Purdue, and Dr. Chong was the instructor for the ECE grad level optimization class when I took it spring '97.The book alone is good, detailed and rigorous enoughfor a graduate course without sacrificing readability or in-chapterexamples.However, without the MATLAB examples that were developed by theauthors to accompany lectures and illustrate each optimization methodcovered, the material might be a little abstract or dry for self-teaching. An excellent introduction or reference nonetheless, those without a solidbase in linear algebra should keep a reference text handy while reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice job
Combinatorics is an area of mathematics that is frequently looked on as one that is reserved for a small minority of mathematicians: die-hard individualists who shun the limelight and take on problems that most would find boring. In addition, it has been viewed as a part of mathematics that has not followed the trend toward axiomatization that has dominated mathematics in the last 150 years. It is however also a field that has taken on enormous importance in recent years do its applicability in network engineering, combinatorial optimization, coding theory, cryptography, integer programming, constraint satisfaction, and computational biology. In the study of toric varieties in algebraic geometry, combinatorics has had a tremendous influence. Indeed combinatorial constructions have helped give a wide variety of concrete examples of algebraic varieties in algebraic geometry, giving beginning students in this area much needed intuition and understanding. It is the the advent of the computer though that has had the greatest influence on combinatorics, and vice versa. The consideration of NP complete problems typically involves enumerative problems in graph theory, one example being the existance of a Hamiltonian cycle in a graph. The use of the computer as a tool for proof in combinatorics, such as the 4-color problem, is now legendary. In addition, several good software packages, such as GAP and Combinatorica, have recently appeared that are explicitly designed to do combinatorics. One fact that is most interesting to me about combinatorics is that it gave the first explicit example of a mathematical statement that is unprovable in Peano arithmetic. Before coming across this, I used to think the unprovable statements of Godel had no direct relevance for mathematics, but were only interesting from the standpoint of its foundations. 4-0 out of 5 stars excellent book !
In its usual way schaum's series gives out another book which is both helpful yet concise. This book gives the essential grounding for combinatorics and graph theory without being overly gargantuan encyclopedia..ample problems set the tone for a future mathematician. theycould've done better though..hence not the perfect 5 ! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good book after Schneier's Non-Mathematical Treatment
If you are an engineer trying to learn crypto, maybe get a book on number theory to go with this book. It'd be nice if there were fewer errors and more worked out problems, as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Volume III ofthe Definitive Work
This book takes a fairly rigorous mathematical approach to cryptography. It is intended for upper level undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, computer science and engineering. I suspect only the quite mathematically inclined computer science and engineering students will find this book helpful. This is not a Boy Scout how to do secret messages book, but a book that will give the professional the data needed to implement cryptographic software, and the mathematician hints on both code breaking and creating.
3-0 out of 5 stars Could be a great book .... but it falls short
As other people have pointed out, this is not a mathematics book, and it is not an algorithm (recipies) book. It could be a great book for people that are interested in learning these tools to actually use them, either in a research or product development context (something besides homework). Unfortunately, the number of typos, in key mathematical expressions AND PORTIONS OF THE EXPLANATIONS is staggering. Go to the author's web page and you will find that some chapters, like 4 for example, average more than one typo per page (and some of these 'typos' are full sentences, or math expressions that do not look like anything that is actually printed on the page). If you do not have that errata sheet handy, you will waste a lot of time trying to understand the text, or trying to solve the exercises. If you are trying to learn from this book, without attending a class and without the errata, you will simply give up. It is a real shame because it has all the makings of a great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
introduction to mathcad.I had never used this type of programming b4 2 do my calculations. The local school uses this program (mathcad) and i found this book 2 b extremely helpful in getting my feet wet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Introductory, Augments the Users Manual Well
I found this book geared to the beginning user of Mathcad or computer aided mathematics.Though it is abit more introductory then I was hoping for, I enjoyed the broad range of problems that are presented.I think this book is a good addition to the Mathcad users manual because it helps to collect and focus the great functionality and usability of the Mathcad software on a broad range of engineering problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Acclaim for Mr. Larsen's "Mathcad 11"
This book far exceeded my expectations. I have used Mathcad for several years, but only its most basic features. I always wanted to learn more but never found the time to struggle through the HELP section trying to teach myself about its higher level capabilities. I wanted a book that would provide me a simple sequence of learning lessons from the beginning through higher level capabilities. However, I feared getting something either way too complicated (I am an engineer--not a mathematician), or something too trivial to teach me what I wanted to know. Also, many people who are good at doing something teach it poorly. Mr. Larsen not only KNOWS how to use Mathcad--he is a WONDERFUL teacher of its use! I could not practice engineering without the help of Matchcad, but I could not use more than a fraction of Mathcad's capabilities without Mr. Larsen's lessons. It is a bargain at $32. If you are an engineer who uses math, invest in Mathcad software. If you have Mathcad 11 software I recomend that you own this book to get your money's worth from this expensive software! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best...
I first used this book as a text for a graduate course in Integer Programming. At first it seemed to be a very poorly organized book, but as I read it and grew familiar with the subject, I realized that this is a hybrid textbook-handbook. Though the title says "Integer and Combinatorial", the authors go a step ahead and present topics in advanced linear programming, computational complexity, polyhedral theory in a fashion appropriate to the learning of this subject. The exercises are challenging and it has a very good list of references (only up to 1988). Our professor had to supplement the text with recent papers to cover the latest advances. My only complaint is that model formulation could have been dealt with in more detail. You might want to use HP Williams' "Model Building in Mathematical Programming" to look up good Math Prog models.4-0 out of 5 stars great book
Nemhauser is a great professor and this book is text book for IP. But this book requires that you are familiar with Linear programming. So read this book only after you had LP. Bertsimas book is really good for Lp. Or even Bazaara's book is a goo start.5-0 out of 5 stars Learning, understanding, optimizing NP problem
Don't let the title fools you. This book goes beyond Integer and Combintarial optimization. While there are many books talk about NP and proof, this book makes you "understand" it! Still, I agree with others that this book is a reference tool for Integer and Combinatorial optimization.I'm so glad this book published in paperback so it will be more affordable for others.... still expensive though :( ... 1-0 out of 5 stars No CD-Rom!
The main purpose of this textbook is supposed to be the combination of the visualization of curves and surfaces along with the traditional differential geometry materials. This book makes a great effort to realize this lofty goal with some success as a reference book.As a main textbook, however, it fails to deliver what it promised by overlooking one small point: the lack of CD-Rom.The readers are expected to type in the sample programs manually. This can be very time-consuming especially for inexperienced students.Inevitably, a lot of valuable class time has be consumed helping students looking for and correcting errors, many of which are small typographic errors completely unrelated to either their mathematical understanding or their computer skill. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to differential geometry
The visualization of complicated geometrical objects 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Gray does not intend for you to buy his book if you don't haveaccess to Mathematica and simply want to learn about differentialgeometry from an axiomatic standpoint.Of course if you don't have access to Mathematica, this isn't for you, and even if you do have Mathematica, you will probably want to have a good "standard" text to go along with your learning.Having said this, the book and Mathematica make an excellent addition to anyone's diferential geometry course. ...
