2-0 out of 5 stars Works, but disappointing for number of errors - and only game in town
As a new Maple user, but a sophisticated software developer, I think the tutorial is better that comes with Maple. Going through that tutorial is faster, and it covers the same things as the book, but without errors.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage, many errors
I used this book as the text in a Maple class that I taught during the January term of 2006. While I found the coverage and exposition more than satisfactory, there are a large number of errors that made it difficult for the students. In their evaluations, they were happy with the level of difficulty and the amount of work, thought they learned a lot but every student complained about the number of errors in the book. What disturbed them the most was the fact that many of the errors were in the code examples, so when they tried to run them, all they got were error messages.

Prompt delivery, book was in great shape. I'd buy my next textbook this way!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Coding Theory
The greatest quality of this book is that all the author expects the reader to have is a basic mathematics background (a Discrete Structures background of basic Set Theory). It contains consise explanations and straightforward proofs to all the essential theorems of the subject, but, fortunately, is NOT too elementary that it loses its true mathematical appeal. To top it all, it is chock-full of excellent applied problems in communications, image transmission, and even a party trick here or there (oh yes, friends WILL be impressed when you can error-correct an ISBN!).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical introduction to GAs
Well rounded and importantly, practical introduction to the subject.Gives a rapid basic understanding of the elements required, and provides all the information needed for further reading to expand knowledge in timely and appropriate places in the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars An honest book
A fine introduction. Well written, very, very clear... And the codes are pretty easy to understand even for beginners. I would recommend it as a first course on GAs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too little information, even for beginners
This is an introductory (undergraduate level) book targeted towards practitioners. The content is far from being satisfactory, even for beginners. However, if you have only a couple of hours and you want to get some information about GAs, this book is for you. If you're looking for comprehensive coverage on the topic, I'd recommend Eiben & Smith's "Introduction to Evolutionary Computing". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for students
Within this book, various algorithms can be found. The algorithms are implemented on various DSPs (TI C3x',AD 21xxx and etc) as well. Would be a great reference for students working on their DSP projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars a stimulating book
C Algorithms for Real-Time DSP, by Paul Embree, is a stimulating book. When I finished reading it, I went straight to my workstation and started experimenting with DSP algorithms. Embree clearly knows this subject andpresents it in a straightforward manner. This is a refreshing change fromthe academic approach taken by the seven digital-signal processing bookscurrently on my bookshelf. Not that Embree doesn't reference some heavymath. C Algorithms for Real-Time DSP is not for the mathematically weak ofheart. To feel comfortable with the book, you should be familiar with time-and frequency-domain math as well as filter terminology&emdash;topicsEmbree reviews in the first part of the book. Reading this section remindedme of how my entire high-school education was summarized in my first weekof college.

1-0 out of 5 stars it's a very poor-written book.
This book's title and topics sounds very attractive. Unfortunately, it hasnothing more than like a reference card!! The content need more detailpresentation and analysis to give readers something valuable. A book withonly about 200 pages of headlines sale for more than $70, this isabsolutely ridiculous!! The worst book in my colletion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good advanced resource
This book is very thorough in its treatment of select nonlinear programming techniques for both unconstrained and constrained problems. The author provides an in-depth coverage of several useful methods, including newton, quasi-newton, least-squares, penalty, augmented lagrangian, quadratic, SQP, and even discontinuous nonlinear programming.Much emphasis is placed upon various quadratic approximation methods. It should be noted that several other well-known methods are not treated in any significant detail. The author seems to have made a conscious choice to concentrate on a set of core techniques at the expense of some others. In my view, this decision makes this book an excellent reference for those wishing to better understand the nuances and implementation details for the chosen methods. For the same reason, this book is probably not as well-suited as an introduction to the broader range of optimization methods.Since there are plenty of other books to choose from for this purpose, the author's choice to focus on some core methods enables his book to stand apart quite uniquely.
5-0 out of 5 stars A classic and must-have for researchers using optimization
I recommend this book for anybody needing to learn the basics of optimization as well as a reference for people already in the field. Dr. Fletcher covers the basics, advantages, and disadvantages of optimization methods capitalizing on his long experience on the field.I find the book to be clearly written and easy to follow. Although notation is clearly explained when introduced, the author gives a notation summary at the begining of the book. This makes the book usefull as a learning as well as a reference. Although the book has not changed since the second edition, theoptimization methods it describes are still the most-widely-applicable ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paperback reprint of 2nd Ed. from 1987

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but the 2nd edition will hopefully be better
This is a fairly challenging text. It's currently being used in my undergrad PDE course, and the flow of material is a bit out of the ordinary. The book starts off with the method of characteristics and weak solutions, which are slightly more sophisticated and unusual topics than some of the later material, making it difficult to get started. The focus on using Matlab is nice, and most things are fairly well-explained. Typographical errors are rampant, however, making it very poor for self-study (you need someone to point out the errors to you).2-0 out of 5 stars An excellent rough draft of a textbook.
Cooper's book does some things quite well. While most courses on PDE's are reduced to repetitive applications of separation of variables and Fourier series, Cooper offers a new approach. He goes by equation ratherthan by technique, and introduces nonlinear equations and numerical methodsvery early.Separation of variables and Fourier series do not come upuntil Chapter 4.The first chapter, which reviews elements of analysis, isa very good reference.MATLAB is well incorporated throughout thetext.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Intersting Studies Hampered by LEDA and LP Dependencies
I'm pleased with the text in this book; the descriptions are almost all clear, and reading through the book gives me insight into some more interesting problems in trees and graphs. The high points of the book are its treaments of tree and graph isomorphism, but I also found the discussions of non-traditional traversal algorithms on trees and graphs very interesting. The author discussions leaf-first, breadth-first, and depth-first traversals and provides algorithms for their implementation. Many of the algorithms include correctness proofs.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too discrete!!!
It is one thing to learn math.It is another thing to read it from a textbook.Although discrete mathematics is not meant to be all that numerically focused, I do not recommend using this text at all. There are very few examples to accompany the new content and the explanations are not clear. Also, the section review problems are NOTHING like the material presented.Yes, it is imperative to think like a mathematician, but the problems are worded much too differently than what is taught.Do not expect to do well in a course using this text unless you have a helpful instructor!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice for discrete if your emphasis is graphs
As a teacher of discrete mathematics, I must constantly scan new books in the never-ending search for the best one with appropriate content and level. The course that I teach is required and early in the computer science major. It also provides the mathematical foundation for all of the later computer science courses. Therefore, any book that I use must demonstrate mathematical proofs, but not at too high a level. Coverage of fundamental topics such as propositional logic, sets, relations and functions; basic combinatorics and induction are a requirement.
4-0 out of 5 stars it is satisfactory
This text was designed mainly for young university students with the goal of introducing concepts such as induction to as well as, of course, some introductory descrete math and graph theory, with the former (induction, etc.) being as important as the latter. This is not a comprehensive text and was not intended to be so. It is a pleasent bridge to more mathematically correct way of thinking. Proofs are emphasized, not numerical answers (in most sections). Famous proofs are displayed and are incorperated in a non-trivial way. This book is applicable for mathematics and computer science students alike and the questions have a good spread of difficulty. I recommend this book to anyone interested in something more than high school math. ... Read more
