5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
At the university I am attending Johnsonbaugh's book was a required text for a subject introducing discrete mathematics. Unfortunately, like many others it seems, I was less than impressed with the books ability 'teach', or even reinforce what we had just studied in lectures. I went looking for another book, not so much as a replacement for Johnsonbaugh's book, but as an additional reference/study aid.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly comprehensive
This book will occupy a prime spot on my bookshelf. I've had to use a bunch of different books to find this kind of information before. It's nice to see such a wide range of topics from discrete math covered sothoroughly. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst book
This is probably the worst book in Scientific computation. This book doesnot explain any topic in depth. It's a waste of money to buy this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Whomever reviewed this text positively is an idealistic tool
Pavlov's dogs could have been trained to write a better textbook on Matlab computing then the author has done.In fact, I believe this book was written and produced by 1,000 monkeys instead of an esteemed Cornell professor. The examples in the book rarely work and I believe that any careful reader will realize that anyone who gives this book a positive review is a complete tool that probably has nothing better to do than to make excuses for his domestic partner's poor job at crafting such an overpriced waste of tree pulp.It seems to me that professors @ Cornell should stay out of the publishing industry because they just can't seem to get anything right. As for the positive reviewers of this text, I believe they should get some of that South African homegrown Viagra "on tap" and have "a thought-provoking and exciting" time for once in their sad sad lives.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is an embarrrassment.
I am in the professors class and the lectures are just as incomprehensible as the book. This book uses mathematics to obscure mathematical concepts beyond recognizability. Its unfortunate that this book has wiped out any interest I might have had in numerical analysis. It is not a good reference for anything except for how to write a terrible book. Specifically, the code doesn't make sense and is often inconsistent, the explanations are scanty, typos are abundant, and any knowledge to be had is lost in the muddle. Don't bother with thisbook. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat dated...but still helpful
For the reader well-versed in Mathematica and in economic theory, this book gives a fairly good overview of how Mathematica can be used to study mathematical economics and finance. It is also assumed in the articles in the book that the reader has a strong background in mathematics. Since the book was published in 1993, Mathematica has considerably expanded, with many new features that make some of the accompanying code in the book somewhat dated, but the notebooks can still be used beneficially. In addition, economic theory is currently making more use of symbolic programming, and financial analysis has exploded as an area which is now making heavy use of high-performance computing. Although Mathematica cannot compete from a performance standpoint with the needs of financial engineering, it still has an advantage from a didactic standpoint. I did not read all of the articles in the book, so my comments will be limited to the ones that I did.

I had this textbook in my undergraduate Discrete Math course.I have never written an Amazon review but I feel the need to in this case. The reviews I could find deal with the Czech version and are glowing. The English translation is not useful for those who are trying to learn the material for the first time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Guide
This book lays out the basics of SEM in an understandable way. Doesn't address EVERY issue, but then again it's very accessible and application-oriented, with language not too highly techinical (in relation to other SEM texts).

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to follow
This is quite easy to follow for beginners but you def. need a good stats background to do so!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand; needs a second edition
No one expects statistics to be easy reading, especially when it concerns complicated models such as structural equation modeling (SEM). Nevertheless, this book manages to do just that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Suitable for a graduate level course
While most computer science departments require their students to take calculus, with few exceptions it is a skill that they will not use. The mathematics used by computer scientists is almost exclusively discrete in nature. In fact, assumptions concerning continuity can often lead to subtle errors in programming, the laws of algebra do not universally apply in computing. This book presents most of the key ideas of discrete mathematics applied to computing and the coverage is thorough and detailed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for data structure algorithm complexity.

3-0 out of 5 stars Numerous errors hurt an otherwise decent book
Using the text for self study, I was initially quite pleased. The layout is attractive, selection of topics appropriate and writing style generally clear. The applied problems are rather nice.
5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS IN NUMERICAL ANALYSIS EVER PUBLISHED!
This has been the best numerical analysis book that I have ever seen. The author does a brilliant job and explains concepts with extreme clarity. With this book, there isn't even any need of sitting in a professor's lecture. The book that my university uses sucks so bad, there's not 1 thing I could understand. Relying on that would have flunked me, yet that useless book costs over $100 and this remarkable book only cost me $20. It may be a 1994 edition, but even 2005 edition books on numerical analysis fail to meet its quality. Definitely a lifesaver for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wide range of topics covered in detail, but lots of mistakes
I was quite amazed by the wide range of topics and applications covered by this book. And yet, each topic is covered in detail, with many algorithms presented to achieve a certain goal. The various algorithms are always summarised and compared, so that it is a simple matter to know whichalgorithm to choose depending on the circumstances of the problem at hand.I liked the very detailed examples which tend to run over a good number ofiterations so that one can easily test one's understanding of the operationof the algorithm.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on boolean algebra and logic for more advanced students
This book is devoted to two separate and related topics: the theory of Boolean algebra and logic and also the synthesis and simplification of switching and logic circuits. This is a good book for students taking a course on digital logic that has more of a computer science or mathematics perspective rather than an electrical engineering viewpoint. There is no mention of gates or digital circuit building blocks of any kind in this outline. The treatment of switching and logic circuits is limited to the combinational circuits - those circuits whose outputs depend only on the present inputs.
4-0 out of 5 stars digital designers can find useful problems
For those of you inclined to the theoretical aspects of computing, this book may be good revision. The first half of the book deals with set theory and then with Boolean algebra. The Boolean concepts should be easy to follow, and likewise with the problems presented to you here.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect to learn from this
If you need a reference for various numerical methods then this book may be of use to you, but do not expect to learn anything from it.You will not be taught 'why' these methods work, or 'how' they came about--it simply lists a bunch of formulas with a few meager attempts at derivations here and there. If you want to actually understand this stuff you'll have to go elsewhere. If you just want a reference...I would still go elsewhere.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for reference, but don't expect to learn from this book
I used this book in a college level course, and let me tell you it is close to worthless.I gave it two stars because someone might be able to use this for some kind of whimpy reference book.Don't buy this expectingto learn much from it though. The first few chapters are ok, but later onit just glosses over many things you need in order to understand stuff.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book
This book is exactly as the title says. There are a lot of great sources on applied mathematics and it covers a lot of good material ranging from iterative methods to PDE's.Matlab is the software of choice and the bookdoes a good job of making use of Matlab. The detraction to this book isthe lack of rigor. The book operates under the misconceptiong that appliedmath doesn't have to be very analytical. As a reference book it is goodresource, but as a textbook a little bit more analysis needs to be put in. This is a nice fresh idea for what Numerical Analysis should be, but coulduse a bit more beefing up in the analysis side.Hopefully this will comewith later editions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating as both a 'History of Ideas' and as biographical sketches
A truly excellent book. Both as a 'history of ideas' and in its consideration of the personal trials and tribulations faced by Leibniz, Frege, Boole, Hilbert, Cantor, Godel, and Turing. The book traces the development of the computer through the life and work of these logicians/mathematicians, from Leibniz's dream of a language of symbolic logic and a machine capable of producing and testing true propositions in that language. This book is relevant not only to philosophers, mathematicians, and computer scientists, but to writers who seek understanding of the relations between language and logic in the contemporary electronic landscape. It will also be a good read for anyone wishing to understand the intellectual atmospheres from which the computer arose.
4-0 out of 5 stars Limits in computers
It may be initially hard to connect Leibniz's series or George Cantor's quest for infinite numbers to the modern computer, butDr. Davis does a masterful job of showing this logical progression. The progression continues to Godel and Turing, and from Turing to the modern computer. 5-0 out of 5 stars Paperback edition of "The Universal Computer"

5-0 out of 5 stars The most outstanding book in my entire collection
I took the class IFT2121 given by Gilles Brassard, and thanks that we had book which is so well done and complete.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too conversational
The reason I dislike this book is that it is written in a conversational style, which is very hard to follow. Being a beginner at this, it would be much more helpful if things were separated and clearly emphasized step by step. This book makes it difficult because all proofs are written into a big block of a paragraph. I normally have taken an hour or so to decode a paragraph so that I can say "Oh! That's what he meant." The content is good- layout is bad.
