5-0 out of 5 stars A concise catalog of theorems and conjectures.
This is a highly technical book that gathers together in one medium-sized volume (less than 300 pages) hundreds of new and classical theorems and conjectures on every conceivable type of graph coloring problem. It is primarily a mathematical treatment in Theorem-Proof style, although the proofs are left to the references (otherwise the book would have been enormous). The book consists of many short sections, each one often less than a page, formally stating a theorem or a conjecture, then briefly summarizing what is known about it, and where the results have been published. As the authors state in the preface, "We did not intend to write a textbook to be read from beginning to end, but rather a catalog suitable for browsing". It seems they have achieved what was intended; it's quite interesting to simply browse through this book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mature and Concrete Introduction to Algebraic Number Theory
I used this book in a one on one course in algebraic number theory in my fourth year of college. We finished just before ramification.
1-0 out of 5 stars Worst textbook ever!
I am a graduate student specializing in Ring Theory and I have to tell you this is the absolute worst book I have ever had. Not only does the author make these humongous jumps in each section, he also has massive logical gaps. There are plenty of errors in the text starting right from the first section. You could easily spend a whole year deciphering (with a massive headache) the first chapter. The author is definetly wrong in assuming that all you need is a basic undergraduate number theory class and basic abstract algebra. You could have 2 comprehensive years of graduate modern algebra and still not be ready for the massive logical gaps in the book. Sure if we were all Galois and Eulers, the book would be easier, but I'd bet they'd even be scratching their heads often enough. My advice is stay away from the text at all cost. You'll regret paying the outrageous price for a text that is worth firepaper.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!
I learned a tremendous amount about Algebraic Number Theory from this excellent source. I have looked at other books that just skim the topics. This one covers them in depth and even has applications to cryptography (the author shuld have put that in the title). Even more advanced topics such as the higher reciprocity laws are covered with rigorous detail and extreme clarity. I read the AMS review for this book by Charles Parry and it is right on! This book should replace the old standards such as Janusz's and Marcus' books for instance. I'd say that this is a gem to be enjoyed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner of MATLAB
Great book at introducing MATLAB.If you are an ABSOLUTE beginner in programming with MATLAB this book is a must.It answers practically all the questions a beginner would have and shows you where to go if you need additional information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful matlab reference
Excellent text.Contains nice, brief summaries of matlab functionality, with references on where to go to get more verbose explanations. This book is about the size of a postcard. When I need to locate or discover a new function that I'm sure matlab has somewhere, this Primer is usually more effective than the matlab on-line help. Also good for an overview of functionality, an area where Matlab's on-line help is particularly weak.Assumes no knowledge of matlab.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't need anything else
In MATLAB, really the only thing you need is a list of commands, then you can type 'help command' and be done.Sigmon's book is just this.Good enough to carry me through undergrad to first year grad school. Next yearI'll need a reference specializing in the controls toolkit, but this Primerwill still be glued to my hand whenever I start Matlab. I'm buying one foreach of my students. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly brilliant
Of course, 'brilliant' is what you'd expect from Feynman. These lectures, originally presented in 1983-6, capture a number of the most fundamental, esoteric concepts in computing. Since Feynman is doing the explaining, however, the ideas come across clear and strong.
5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book
Yes, I think you can teach the theory of computation from this book. And you can learn it from this book. Some of the material isn't all that recent, but much of it doesn't need to be.
3-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing is correct
We physicists want a readable book on computability, degrees of computational complexity, and the like. Feynman would have been the writer to provide us with that. We're fortunate to have anything at all of what Feynman thought about the subject, but this book (taken from Feynman's rough lecture notes) does not do the job. E.g., in the first chapter we're presented with a description of RPF's joy in discovery and corresponding philosophy of how to understand anything: don't read about it, just work it out by yourself in umpteen different ways (nothing new about Feynman there!), but the examples provided of how Feynman actullally worked it out can be compared with some of Arnol'd's presentations of how he worked out mechanics problems in his text on Classical Mechanics (state the problem, then state the final result). So we still need a SYSTEMATIC 'written-for physicists' text on computability. Neverthless, we can be grateful to Hey and Allen for putting together these stimulating Feynman fragments for us, especially since they stem from his last days of life as a physicist.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every word in this book has apurpose.
This is the right book for those students who want more than just passing a required course.A common complain from students is that this book is too wordy. This is because what students expect from a mathematical textbook is a sort of text in which they will hit a definition at the first line of the first page, then do one or two stupid examples, and then another definition, and so on. After one semester, students may be able to solve a half of the problems on the final, and get the credit, and then happily go back to debug their JAVA programs... We call that CS major students. Fine. But this way students lost the real reason all CS departments bother to ask their students to take math course at the first place. If CS means problem-solving, then this book gives the right ideas about where are those problems from and how to formulate those problems into better mathematics so we can solve them by computers. For example, it's not just about how to find a GCD; it is about how to convert the method we already know form our high school math into an algorithm and make the two, mathematics and computer, into one body.If you are an undergrade student majoring in CS, this book may be difficult to read at first, but it is worthwhile to spend a little more time to get used to Mattson's idiosyncrasy, and you will see a bigger picture behind the math. Although this book is not written for graduate students, it is also good for those graduates who want to make up their missing muscle for serious researches. One of the best parts of this book is its problem collection. I enjoy solving (sometimes I fail) many beautiful problems collected in this book. Good citation and further reading list at the end of every chapter. Another thing surprises me is that, I cannot find any other book at the same level that can give some serious technical terms an easy, intuitive, and *correct* explanation, e.g., the Axiom of Choice, although I do not like Mattson's opinion on infinity; but that is opinion. Enjoy the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars stay away from this book if you enjoy math
Mattson has produced a horribly awkward text. The manner in which the book is written is far from engaging. The example problems are tediously uninteresting and explained without regard for the value of conceptual knowledge.Much of his terminology is obscure and he frequently makes vague references to previous parts of the text which can become impossible to follow.Very few of the problems have solutions; one is supposedly able to determine whether their answer is correct without any affirmation. The book redeems itself only by the many lists of real mathematics books which the author suggests as outside reading.Go read THESE books instead. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't. No, no, no.
I can't understand the raving reviews. It is weak on math, and has no practical example on CG.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not the best
Though the book covers a broad range of mathematics present in the field of computer graphics, I found it lacking in certain respects. The plentiful diagrams and figures greatly assisted comprehension of stated materials, yet I would like to see written proofs of methods used.In addition, such topics as quaternions are only briefly mentioned in historical references.Although this is an excellant mathematics book, I strongly recommend the purchase of Mathematics for 3D Game Programming & Computer Graphics in addition to this title.

2-0 out of 5 stars Canned methods, sloppy....
THe credentials of the authors speak in bounds... Drexel University and Georgia Perimeter College???!?!?! GPC is a 2-year. Anyways, all that aside, the presentation of the material is horrible. Obviously, the background of these authors is that of 1,2,3 methods, with absolutely no concept of any concepts behind the material. The problems/examples are unrelated to the material in the chapters, and no preparation was given to answer them. Our professor even said that he emailed the writer to change the wording in a few questions, the writer agreed wholeheartedly, and yet the question remained in the next edition....5-0 out of 5 stars A fine and useful book.
I have never been a math wizard, but I really enjoyed this book, and have kept it around because it is so helpful. 2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult, Innacurate, but Topical
The textbook is difficult to understand and many of the answers in the back of the book are wrong. Also it addresses lots of good topics but mostle hard to understand. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An introduction to some advanced theorems on graphs
The author has spent most of his professional life pondering some of the more substantial problems in graph theory. This book is not a comprehensive treatise on the subject but an organized collection of a series of lectures that he delivered in 1984. The lectures were just as much an attempt to provide insight into the process that led to some advanced theorems as about the theorems themselves. For this reason, the book is best suited for the beginning graduate student with some experience in the field. 5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the mind of a great mathematician
It is unquestionably that W. T. Tutte is today one the greatest mathematicians in the world. I read this book with great enthusiasm because the author explains, with the work that made his fame, the most difficultpart of the discovery of mathematics: The creativity involved.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is when I fell in love with Math.
This book is well written, it contains good examples, and excellent exposition. This was my introduction to mathematical proofs, and after studying it well, I was able to approach more advanced courses, such as advanced calculus and modern algebra with a clear view of how to approach problems where a mathematical proof is needed. I highly recommend this book to undergraduate math majors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and Clear
I honestly can't see how you'd make a book explaining such topics as prime numbers and set theory any clearer than this one.I consider this to be a high quality book. It's easy to understand and reference. Its one drawback is that it covers only a limited number of topics, and none of them are heavy duty.If I found a book that explained graduate level math as well as this one explains undergraduate math, I'd consider it to be gold.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book IF you know how to use it.
This is a solid math book that covers every topic you'll need to know in the area. Make no mistake this is not a kid's book, and one must know how to study and read math in order to utilize it to the full potential. Many people that rate math books poorly do so because they have not developed adequate skills in studying math. If you take your time, work out the examples with the book, read and read again all of the concepts are about as clear as they can come from a math book. Most teachers/professors prefer to use their own examples, because that's how they abstract the problem in their own mind. It's easier to create a problem, than sit down and observe a premade example. Aside from some slightly screwy lesson organization it is a solid book. If you have patience, and try to do more than briefly skim over a lesson to understand it this book will be more than adequate for the topic. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, made constructing GUIs a breeze
I mainly wished to just make a GUI interface, but then I found i needed some graphics and found this book to be very helpful in both categories. For the GUI section, there were many options available for making a GUI and all options were clearly laid out from the use of global variables, to using GUIDE.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick Look
This is not a book for beginners who want to learn MATLAB or GUI. If you already know how to run MATLAB and know some GUI, then you may find this book useful. It will improve your graph and GUI skill. If you have no knowledge on how GUI is created, this is not a book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best text on Matlab GUI development
This is the best book I have found on developing GUIs in Matlab. Other reviews claim that the coverage of GUIs is limited.I agree that the coverage is limited, but yet it is the "less limited" coverage I've found. It is true that there is only one chapter on GUIs.Yet, this is the last and longer chapter in the book. Before buying this book, I tried to learn how to develop GUIs from the Matlab manuals but got only poorly-developed GUIs. with unbearable "side effects" (mainly related to using the Matlab base workspace). This book taught me how to avoid these side effects and how to develop GUIs that are self-contained and whose interaction with the Matlab base workspace is minimal or null.I highly recommend this book to anybody who needs to develop GUIs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good balance between theory and practice
This book provides a good balance between the mathematical theoretical foundations and the implementation of wavelet algorithms. The chapter of time-frequency analysis is specially relevant, and very hard to find in other books about the topic. Theonly miss is about more practical implementations of the algorithms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reference for implementation of transform algorithms
This is the only book i know that is focused on implementation aspects of numerical transforms. It explains quite well the practical issues that are rarely touched in digital signal processing and wavelet textbooks. It spans fourier transforms, cosine, wavelets,... It is rather self-contained, if you have problems with maths you can skip chapter one, other chapters should be quite readable by every science grad student. Be aware that this isnot a transform textbook, so you should first learn a few things about numerical transforms, wavelets and subband coding before getting into this one (go to Oppenheim and Schafer for DSP, Vetterli for subband coding). A good textbook for a course on numerical transforms implementation.

5-0 out of 5 stars *Creating* wavelets!
This is where to learn about wavelet packets, and what they can do.-- Where to learn the programming techniques that are especially adapted to wavelet algorithms, and which have proved their worth. The book actually tells you how to write a program;-- it motivates, and explains the elements step by step. It also gives the background, and offers a beautiful presentation of the essentials. It is selfcontained and a pleasure to read. It has the algorithmic approach to the discrete wavelet transform;--a topic that is hard to find elsewhere,-- at least in a systematic presentation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece for the analysis neophyte
Well, what can I say. I enjoyed this book much more than I normally enjoy mathematics books, and I do have a healthy liking for mathematics.
3-0 out of 5 stars Many examples with a bit too much talk
This is actually an excellent text as a supplement for students of advanced calculus. There are many simplified examples and a lot of explaination, perhaps too much. The author starts with logic, which is good since most students have difficulty with understanding the contrapositive, converse, and proof by contradiction. He gives a lot of information on the subjects that are covered (there are a good number of subjects not covered) and talks (perhaps rambles) a lot on these subjects. However if you could dig through the jargon and appreciate a bunch of nice examples and fundamentals this is a book for you.I didn't look at the CD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review from Strictly Engineering Perspective is Unfair
By way of introduction, I do research in tomographic methods and have written a complete system for electron microscope tomography. This system has been in use for about three years, by about a dozen tomographers.
2-0 out of 5 stars an engineer's view
A worthless book from the perspective of actually doing image reconstruction from projections. ... Read more
