It's the same as Dugopolski's book, except since I got Dugopolski's teacher edition, it helped a little bit more to understand the material.

5-0 out of 5 stars View From a Math Tutor
I have tutored math for over 20 years and Bittenger's book is one of the best I have ever seen for taking pre-algebra students from the basics to the complex. His examples are clearly laid out, easy to follow, and they lay a solid foundation for higher math learning. This book's concepts will definitely help high school students prepare for the SATs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - No Question.
Let's just say that I've been out of school for a while now and Algebra has never been my strong suit. However, I use math all the time in my job so I thought I'd try to learn easier ways of doing things.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved me!!!!
I am a gifted facilitator but that doesn't mean I am an expert in every subject area! This book helped me understand the logic of Algebra for the first time in my life! It helped me understand Algebra in a way that I could explain to my students and that made sense! My students enjoyed the little stories that helped them remember the rules of Algebra! This book saved me! It was a breakthrough for me and I give it the highest rating. Anyone who is over their head in trying to teach Algebra will find it a lifesaver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Algebra tutorial
I would recommend this book to anyone having difficulty with algebra. My son had always done well in math, but had trouble understanding his Algebra I class and was failing the tests.I heard Mr. Zaccaro speak at a conference and bought this book.I used the book to tutor my son and his test grades went from 60s to 90s.He finished the year with a solid B average and is now one of the top students in Algebra II and easily maintains an A average. He is even able to help other students, because Mr. Zaccaro's book gave him such a good foundation in the subject. As a teacher, I think this book succeeds because it is not only informative, but it presents the lessons in an interesting, kid-friendly way.I think it's an excellent tool for remediation; however, I also think it would be great for any child interested in learning algebra just for fun, before it is taught in school. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book...
Lial and Hornsby have written a number of books on Algebra. Hence, their expertise in this field of Mathematics and ability to deliver in the form most suitable for the middle and high schoolers , in particular iswonderful. Review Exercises at the end of each majorsubdivisionprovide means for readers to practice. And also ensure that the readershave gained overall expertise in the particular subdivision. Also , anotheradvantage of this book , in contrast to many other available books, is thecumulative review exercises that engulf concepts from all the precedingchapters, which provides the means to show how these topics areinterrelated.Tests provided also aid in this process. The topics are wellorganized and explained.Very Good Book... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A delicious smorgasbord of inequalities
Professor Steele has done a wonderful job in developing the theory behind the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. He starts off with the basic theory and then through the course of the book he teases out the limitless ways the inequality can be used. There is a breathtaking sweep of applications. What is interesting and valuable about his approach is that as he develops the building blocks he explains why or why not a particular approach might not work. I think there is quite a bit of Polya's inspiration in his approach. For instance, he gives Polya's proof of the Carleman inequality which, on it face, is almost outrageously unbelievable ( where does the "e" come from?) but by that stage you worked through the challenge problems and the other material and it is possible to see why the "e" makes sense.
5-0 out of 5 stars at the core of mathematics
this book deals in a friendly fashion with inequalities (and therefore) with the elementary use of convexity and integrals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Erudite and stimulating problem book in inequalities
The classic work in this field is Hardy, Littlewood, and Polya's "Inequalities", but as much as I admire these authors for their other works, I have never gotten much out of their inequality book. Steele's book is different: extremely clear, erudite, and thorough, it almost makes everything obvious. The subject of inequalities is something of a hodge-podge, and Steele isn't able to change that, but he helps tie it together with lots of forward and backward references and with returns to problems after we have learned new methods. A good example is Carleman's inequality (easily the most startling result in the book); Steele provides three different proofs spread out through the book, plus a continuous analog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
This text is perfect for advanced undergraduates and those in their first year (or two) of graduate school. The examples are based almost entirely on linear algebra and thereby combine abstract and linear algebra.
5-0 out of 5 stars Quite simply, the best math book - Ever!
Okay so I guess this review is kind of biased - I've just completed the 2-semester algebra sequence at MIT, being taught by Prof. Artin himself. The course itself was truly fantastic, and throughout the year I have been in utter awe of Prof. Artin - he is without doubt as close to a role-model as I'm ever going to have.
2-0 out of 5 stars Lack of Explanation and overall disappointing
Frankly, if you use this book, it will be slow going. There is so much to fill in between what Artin covers and what you need to learn to understand the material. I often find myself completely lost in this text (and so do many of the other students in my class). The text and proofs seem to have been trimmed down to the bare minimum, at the cost of the user's understanding. Unlike many texts, in this text you have to understand nearly everything before moving on because nothing is explained or discussed twice (so if you don't like the way it is explained the first time in the text, you are in trouble because that will be your only explanation). Examples are difficult to find -- they are literally within the text, often not even beginning a new paragraph when doing an example. That is, the examples are difficult to find IF there are even examples (there are often times where an example would be extremely useful, but Artin does not provide one, or if he does, glosses over it with little detail). I've leaned a lot on the internet and class notes to get me through my year-long abstract algebra course. Perhaps my mind just isn't meant for abstract algebra, but this is the only math book that I always have difficulties finding answers to my questions and rarely can follow, even after multiple readings. A remark on the problems -- the problems occasionally use terms that the book never even explains or even mentions (leaving you even more confused).

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Introductory Algebra Easy to Learn
I am 43 years old and needed to take algebra to finish my AS degree. I have not taken an algebra class in 30 years. This book was the required textbook for my class.
1-0 out of 5 stars Prentice Hall-Excellent Book, lousy program
When a consumer purchases a product, they expect to get what they paid for. This belief is only strengthened when one purchases a product designed for self-improvement, especially if the product is one targeted at educators and students. Prentice Hall's Interactive Math: Beginning Algebra is a severe letdown... this software/textbook bundle is intended for students who are a)in college and b)trying to understand the basics of algebra so that they can continue on with their education and move to the next level. The product fails in two categories; the program itself, the 'installation' guide, and Prentice Hall's servers. To begin with, the installation setup is a joke. Unlike most programs that begin installation the moment the cd has loaded in the drive, users have to locate the add/delete program function in their directory, then click to start and follow the directions. As a long-time computer user, this is not a problem I had, however for the majority of people who have a hard time using computers (and they were the majority in the class I enrolled in which used this program)-this is a daunting task. This fact is compounded by the two installation manuals found in the box (both different). The second issue with program itself is that it is bug-ridden. More often than not, when a correct answer is entered, it is marked as 'incorrect'. The program is set up so that if the test portion of each chapter is not completed to a passing percentage (in our case, the percentage was set at 80%, which would be one incorrect answer out of five)one cannot advance to the next section. Now imagine for a moment getting all five answers correct, being told -you- answered all five incorrectly (because it shows the 'correct' answer under the one you submitted)and having to wait until the teacher can clear the error and mark all your answers correct. Now imagine a whole class having that same problem. It only gets worse when you realize that the classwork is also done at home (the whole course is online and can partially be done at home). The teacher can only do so much, so in the end you can't blame him or her. The blame is on Prentice Hall, and the fact that they clearly did not test this product and clear up the bugs before it was released on the market. The third problem with the product- it's technical support and the servers used to transmit uploaded and downloaded information (since the program itself requires the user to be online to open the program)is by far the worst part. Not only did they shut down their servers (repeatedly) for 'maintenance' at peak times, but students recieved numerous error messages while the system was up and running. Between socket errors and javascript problems, it was next to impossible to upload, download, or startup the program. The tech support number given in the textbook/software bundle- a number which was supposed to be there for students to call 24hrs in regards to assistance was useless after 9pm -even though peak hours for the system ofter were at night, when most of the people taking this class (who chose it because it was 'distance learning' and flexible)were coming home from work and getting ready to work on their classwork online. The teacher for the class eventually gave his students the -actual- 24hr number midway through the term, however it was after many of us had gone through quite a bit of hassle. In honesty, the only valuable thing about this product, is the actual textbook that comes with it. The textbook mirrors the program, explanation for explanation- and provides problems for the student to work out on their own... I shelled out for the whole package. Expect to see Prentice Hall either discontinue this product, or pull it off the market only to reintroduce it later after they work out it's inherent problems. Until then, please, do not buy this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars It does not explain a thing!
This book is confusing and gives bad examples. It does not go over how to do each step well and is hard to understand. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good self-study book
first off, i'm not rebecca stack, but we use the same account. i am self-studying at home using this book. addison wesley were completely and utterly unhelpful when i asked for assistance when i first purchased the book and solutions manual. as for the book itself, i'm very happy with my purchase, although if you have no normal class/teacher resources, i would say it's essential to buy the solutions manual.
2-0 out of 5 stars THis is a misleading title
THis text is the annotated instructors edition, which is great. (Unless of course you are trying to learn)
1-0 out of 5 stars Review from a college student
I really did not like this book. There is not enough examples to go along with the problems that you have to do. Most everyone in my class had the same complaint. The workbook was not required, but I don't think you coulddo the work without it. I wish the college would get a different book. I amalso sick of Marvin Bittinger thinking everyone is interested in workingout because he is. Get a clue Marvin! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars IF LESS THAN 1 STAR WAS AN OPTION, I WOULD HAVE USED IT!
Having been a home economics major in High School 27 years ago, the last thing I needed in my struggle with college was assistance from Ms Kaseberg! This book is needlessly confusing, unorganized, and a poor showing for MsKasegerg's 30 years of experience. The chapters deal with various topics, but the exercises at the end of each chapter seem to have nothing to dowith the material covered. The book's goal of teaching problem solvingskills has failed miserably. The student is left with a different set ofproblems than were discussed in the chapter and with no clue as to where tostart in solving them. Problem solving skills may have been overlooked orminimized in mathematics education thus far, but this book does not addressthe tools needed to solve problems--it simply leaves the reader lost in analgebraic vacuum without a compass. To make matters worse, after using thisbook as a trial for Algebra II (which was a dismal failure), the Mathcommittee at my university decided to inflict equal torture on Algebra Istudents the very next semester. Publication of this book is bad enough, but it is a sad state of affairs when such a product is actually adopted asa teaching tool. I was in grammer school during the 'New Math' fiasco ofthe late 60's, and I view this approach with similar contempt. Mymathematical and problem solving abilities seemed useless when trying tomake sense of this text book. Publications like this will succeed only inmaking those of us who love working with numbers begin to hate it instead. In short, this text book is a rip off--don't buy it OR take a course thatuses it.Have mercy on us Ms Kaseberg; your 'Just-In-Time Approach' willbe the death of mathematics!

This is by far the worst Algebra text book that I have ever seen. The text is very unclear and the author seems to be very unknowledgeable in her field. There are no explanations to how she came up with the answers thatshe got and that makes me question if they are correct. There are noinstructions available, even to the instructors. This book is a waste ofnot only money, but time also and I am ashamed that the math department atTMCC in Reno actually approved it. ...
