1-0 out of 5 stars Simply ridiculous
It is hard to imagine a worse math book, except maybe the earlier editions of this title.2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Transition into Algebra and High School Math
This book is commonly used by grade schools as a transition for students to get acquainted with algebra topics and prepare for high school math courses.Sadly, this book is poorly laid out, skipping back and forth between topics like a ping pong ball, and often pampers the reader to an extent of which is clearly childish.Even grade school students who were polled often find the pictures both useless and distracting. The chapters of this book also waste space, while providing very little mathematical content. If you are reading this book, or thinking about getting this book for a school environment, you should seriously consider that this book in no way prepares students for high school math courses. Why 2 stars then? The overwhelming use of pictures and comics to portray mathematics may provide easier to understand concepts for children with learning disabilities; but is often distracting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful

4-0 out of 5 stars Money for Books comments
The people were very friendly but the book seemed to take forever to arrive. I was told it would ship within two days but took over two weeks to arrive. I did not expect an instructors edition. I do not recall reading that it was an instructors edition. I had avoided ordering from others, asthey only offered the instructors edition. It still was a huge savings from what our book store wanted for a used book ($65.00). I would recommend this service to anyone, just advise them to order well ahead of their need for the book. They responded to all of my emails in a fast and professional manner. This was my first experience ordering from your service and I would do it again. All in all, I saved $100 over what I had paid for two used books in the college book store. Thanks for the savings.

4-0 out of 5 stars a reader
This book is not as bad as everyone is saying. I am an older student taking Algebra for the first time in 15+ years and did not have a problem with the book.I do recommend the instructor's edition though which was very helpful!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Kaseberg's 2nd Edition is Terrific
Kaseberg outdid herself on the second editon (2000 publication date)of Just-in-Time! Yes, the first edition (1996 edition)was difficult to read and lacked organization. But those problems have been fixed. The 2nd edition is very readable and the organization is much clearer. The new edition also has more exercises. The best thing about this book is that no one can ever again ask "why do I need to know this?" because from the first page, Kaseberg shows you how the math is used in the real world. Also, in many places you get a triple whammy explanation of the math: you get it with algebra symbols, if that doesn't work, she shows you how the same idea looks on a graph, and in case you still don't get it, she shows how the same math looks with sketches of stuff in the real world. Finally, Kaseberg treats you like you have a brain--she helps you discover why the math works instead of just telling you that it works and expecting you to believe her. I LOVE this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No variable quality here
One of the first things that jumps out at the reader of this text book is the colour - I remember algebra texts from nearly three decades ago when I first learned the subject, and they were usually fairly boring black-and-white texts. This has colour on every page. There are marginal pull-quote boxes that explain in simpler, verbal language some of the algebraic and mathematical concepts being demonstrated in the problems. There are also marginal notes that give hints (Success Tips, Caution, and Notation pieces) to remind students of key concepts or introduce important and special elements.

3-0 out of 5 stars Caveat emptor!
Look at this book before you buy it.The author gets five stars; the publisher, one at most. What a shame! This is just the book for the summer before you start grad school. See Galois theory in action! But check it out of the library. It's printed on blotting paper. The illustrations are done in shades of black. If you wear glasses you will think they are dirty, but sadly, no amount of cleaning will make this book look as sharp and clear as its ideas. Of course, what you really study will be in your own handwriting, but a book this expensive should be beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Felix Klein and polynomials of the fifth degree
There are many books that discuss the fact that you cannot solve the general polynomial of the fifth degree (i.e. a quintic) using radicals. They often mention that Felix Klein showed there is a method to find the roots using rotations of the icosahedron, the regular polyhedron with 20 triangular faces. It is hard to find out exactly what this means (Klein's own book is out of print).Shurman gives all the details, and is a well written book combining group theory and geometry.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best learning tool ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the single most best learning book for math that i ever read. I am starting collage and math is a requirement for my major. I have been out of school for 20 years and my math was very rusty. This book goes into great detail on the why and how too of everything in algebra. Anyone who doesn`t know anything about algebra if he or she was given this book will have a great understanding of algebra. if you have a son or daughter and wish them to learn algebra this is the book for you/them. It is a book that uses word instead of usless/vague examples that teach you nothing. only after the auther fully explains why something is done a math example is shown to put it into context. I hope they make a book on geometry and trig. i bought their book on calculus. I wish that all math books had more text instead of usless math examples. and teachers that understood that explanation of a problem instead of trial and error is a much better aproach. I would have given this book 1,000 stars if possible.I will always be gratefull to the authors of this book. Thank you very much for your hard work and understanding. Over all if you want a strong understanding of algebra buy this book!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Math for Readers
If you have a daughter who loves to read but hates math, BUY HER THIS BOOK. She will soon be laughing instead of crying over her math homework, and she'll understand not just how to do math but why the rules work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it!
This textbook is perfect for any learning college student. As a college math student I was forced to buy this book, but little did I know that in the long run, I'd learn alot from this book, and the materials learned stook out for a while. They stayed in my head and memory for avery long time. If you are going to move to the next higher level math, be glad you bought this one.It will help you a great deal. It's worth it!
1-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful
I ordered this book thinking that it was the textbook. The book that I got not only took forever, but was not the textbook, it was only a student answer key. Seeing as how the description of the book says "text" it is very decieving. So if you need the text be careful when ordering this. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks the depth I consider necessary for a text.
This book could be used as a text in a beginning course in abstract algebra. However, it does not go into the depth that other texts do, so if you want to delve more deeply into modern algebra, you may not find it suitable. It begins with complex numbers, constructability of regular polygons and solutions of equations. Modular arithmetic, the binomial theorem and basic number theory fill the next section. Most of this is fairly low level and would be familiar to the advanced undergraduate.
2-0 out of 5 stars Hi.
This year we used this text for an introductory course in algebra. I thought it did a very good job giving a motivation to the study of some more abstract-seeming topics (just like the plug on the back of the book says). I liked the way the book connects previous algebra a student might have taken with "modern algebra." I got along fairly well with this book because I read ahead a lot; however, many of my classmates had trouble with it. Stahl apparently does not always explain things fully. I have found myself at times being confused by his explanations of things that I already understood. One of my classmates told me he never would have made it through the last three months of the course if I had not explained things to him. I do not know how exactly the blame should be divided between Stahl and my classmates, but the experiment certainly did not work. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly a rigorous text
Although the material this book covers is important for any undergraduate mathematics student to learn, the approach Stahl takes is not as rigorous as a student planning to go onto grad school should get.If you are simplyinterested in a glimpse at group theory and Galois theory, then I recommendthe book.If you want to really get your hands dirty, then I suggestpossibly something by Herstein. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting math textbook!
First, I should share that I am the author ot this textbook!Next, I want to respond to the other review by saying that the criticisms are accurate for the premlinary edition, but not this first edition (with subtitle "Functions and Authentic Applications").In fact, the first edition was not available when the other review was posted! In the first edition I completely rewrote the the text so that it is now really easy to follow. It even has a list of key points at the end of each section. The text has tons of current, interesting data sets that makes the course come alive. You will need to use a graphing calculator with this text.My students love using this text and I'm sure you will too! ... The University of Chicago Math Series is excellent as an self-study orin-classroom math series. I prefer it over other curriculums I have used.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Chicago Math" Algebra text is Excellent!
Our 14 yr. old (homeschooled) daughter just completed this University of Chicago's Algebra textbook. She found the text complete, thorough, and very easy to follow! She found it to be an almost completely 'self taught'course! She also enjoyed the colorful pictures, extra projects sections, and the interesting sidenotes which included world trivia topics. We havebeen successfully using the Saxon math text books for all of our lowergrade math work thus far, and were somewhat reluctant to try something"new" and different. But right from the start, our daughterLOVED the Chicago math, and welcomed the change. I just wish that there hadbeen a text like this for me, her mother, when I was struggling throughAlgebra back in the '70's.We would highly recommend this math textbook, and it's clear solution manual to ANYONE studying Algebra!Go ahead andtry something different this year! ... I got this book for my college math class as required for the course.I'm half way through so far and it's easy to digest.I would say that if one were to self-study, he or she may need additional sources to help them figure out some of the topics in some chapters due to the lack of examples. There are examples though, but just not enough to cover every type of variation in the chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A worthy supplement
If you're back in college algebra class sitting in a college albegra class and feeling rusty, you should have a copy of this book. The key to your success will be working lots of problems--certainly more than your teacher will assign. In this Schaum's outline, you will find a concise, clear review of the theory, followed immediately by many problems with detailed solutions.Nothing is worse than in a math class than getting hung up on some idea during the semester. You will fall behind and probably not catch up.Semester after semester, my students tell me this Schaum's made a positive difference in their understanding.
