Shameful - Too many major errors - Best to avoid
This book is by no means meant to be a primary text.It clearly states it is a review textbook to help prepare you for tests.This it does decently except that there are many simple mistakes that detract from its usefullness.

I cannot believe how much I paid for this book!
Sullivan's "College Algebra" is a mish-mash of material, very little of which has any relevance to the questions at the end of each section.I am extremely upset that my university changed to this text, as it is vastly inferior to our previous book.There are no examples of key points that are needed to complete homework. What explanations that are available are hard to decipher, much less understand.This text should not be allowed to be used in any classroom, college or high school. ... Read more

No variable quality here
One of the first things that jumps out at the reader of this text book is the colour - I remember algebra texts from nearly three decades ago when I first learned the subject, and they were usually fairly boring black-and-white texts. This has colour on every page. There are marginal pull-quote boxes that explain in simpler, verbal language some of the algebraic and mathematical concepts being demonstrated in the problems. There are also marginal notes that give hints (Success Tips, Caution, and Notation pieces) to remind students of key concepts or introduce important and special elements.

great review of algebra
I havent had algebra in over 30 years and am getting certified to teach high school math.This book takes you through the review in a very thoughtful sequence.I did all the exercises in this book in just one week, completely refreshing my knowledge. HOWEVER, I was very frustrated by numerous mistakes in the solution sets.I wasted much time trying to figure out how they could have gotten their answer only to discover they were wrong (typically a typo).This book would not be good for people who are learning algebra for the first time, or did not really understand it the first time around.But it is VERY GOOD for refreshing knowledge buried deep inside your brain.

Good refresher, but stay on the look out for errors
Quick and easy way to refresh yourself on algebra, even college algebra. But watch out errors, I have probably found about 10 or more, alot of them in chapter 7. Other than that its good.

The Best Algebra Review Around
I returned to school after 7 years to attempt a Masters Degree. I needed to take Calculus and I didn't want to start over at Math. I tried a lot of books on Precalculus and Algebra to get up-to-date before moving to Calculus study guides. This one was the best out of all of them. Excellent book!
This is a terrific algebra book with simple, easy-to-follow explanations and problems in each section which progress from simple to challenging. Jacobs does an excellent job of relating principles of algebra to everyday activities and draws interesting facts from history and literature to engage the learner in each chapter. Great selection of comics and jokes make it fun! There are answers in the back of the book for some of problems in each section, so you can check your work. This has been a great book to help my 13-year-old review what he learned last year!

Outstanding math for visual learners
I began using this book to teach my own children after using Saxon Algebra I and II. I was amazed to discover that Jacobs covers ALL the algrbra from both Saxon Algrbra books in only one book and in much more simple language. (No Geometry is covered in Jacobs Algebra-- but Jacobs Geometry covers it more completely that Saxon.) Each lesson starts with a comic strip or interesting picture and builds the lesson on the comics. After one year with Jacobs my children understand how to find the formulas they need and why problems are solved the way the are. Awesome Book
I have not finished the book yet, but can already tell you what a great resource this is.I haven't taken algebra since my sophmore year in high school and I had pretty much forgotten everything I had learned.That was 13 years ago and so far this book is teaching me in a matter of days what took two years of high school algebra back then.Before this book, I was sure that when going back to college I wouldn't fair well on the math placement exam and would have to take a couple of basic classes to get me up to speed.Now I am confident I can go straight to college algebra and do very well.Buy the book and tell anyone who needs to relearn algebra about it.

If you are studying for:
saved the life of a mathematically challenged student
Because of the unorthodox education I received, I have always had a lot of problems with math. Thanks to this book and Forgotten Calculus I was able to go from a background of only 2 years of HS math over 25 years ago and an elementary algebra class taken in college over 10 years ago and parlay that into a B in a Business Calculus class in only one semester!! Granted I had to work VERY VERY hard to do this, but I even managed to come pretty close to making an A. Bleau's books also teach you how to use a TI-83, a valuable skill and something I couldn't figure out how to do with a TI manual at all. I reviewed and bought a lot of other math books and none of them were anywhere near as good as these two. The only other books I'd recommend are Schaum's for extra practice problems. ... Read more

6 stars! one of my favourites!
This book would be helpful for anyone in high school or 4th-year abstract algebra, or anywhere in between! There's hardly any text to read, I would say ~85% of the learning is done by solving the problems. Barbeau guides the reader by giving directions on how to solve them sometimes, so learning from this book is MUCH MORE interactive (I think that's the right word...) than with others where you just read. It covers complex numbers, how to solve quadratics, cubics & quartics by radicals, symmetric functions of the roots, some number theory (like congruences), numerical methods & approximating roots, factors & zeros and symmetric functions of the roots. Another good one (more advanced than this though) is by Theory of Equations by Uspensky, out of print though unfortunately.

5 stars as an introduction
I found this book many months back when it was still out of print(terribly hard to find back then, but I got it!).This book is fantastic as an introduction to the deep theory involved with polynomials.Covers things such as generating functions, quadratics, complex numbers, Cardan's method for cubics and Ferrari's and Descartes' method for quartics, elementary symmetric polys. in 2, 3, and 'n' variables, some number theory, Rings, Fields, applications of the calculus, a thorough chapter on factoring and zeros of a function, and much more including exercises and some very nice problems.Read more
