Recreational but no-nonsense.
An off-hand account of algebra by one of the best authorities of thesubject. Recommended as a "serious" pass-time.

Modern Mathematics from the viewpoint of Algebra.
The author explains not just the definitions but also the 'philosophy' of algebra with highly non- trivial examples from geometry,analysis & topology not to mention algebra itself. Examples motivate the concepts and show their usefulness. There islittle number of formal proofs, but theorems areusually supported by natural 'explanations' whichmay be even more adequate. Frequently a single example in this book can replace a substantial theory of the corresponding subject. For example, about axioms of projective geometry. A reader with no knowledge of modern algebra cantry reading it ,but it would be more interestingif familiar with subjects of undergraduate mathe matics. Then an undergraduate reader will get some ideas how modern math uses sophiscated tools from algebra to understand other subjects. Late shipping
I paid extra to have the book shipped expresss, but it took longer to get to me than when I ordered other books with regular shipping.

I hate Algebra and I hate this book!
I'm right on the verge of graduating and the only thing standing between me and my degree is this stupid College Algebra class, filled with useless information that I'm quite certain I'll never use again!Ok now that I've vented about that, I must say that I cannot understand why my college switched from Blitzer's College Algebra 2nd Edition to this text.As you may have guessed this isn't my first attempt at passing this *#$% class.A few semesters ago when I took it we used Blitzer's book, and while it was still Algebra and fairly loathesome, at least it was somewhat understandable!This book is clearly written for students who are good at advanced math and plan to go on to higher math. (Talk of Calculus in the pre-chapter!God help me!)Ok, so what if you don't plan on doing that?What if you are just taking this class because your state government says you have to or you can't graduate?I wish someone would write a Collge Algebra text for the rest of us!!!

Again, Larson creates a thorough and CLEAR

Great Book... easy to follow.
I got this book for the second part of my math series for the year.The first part (last semester) I had a teacher that had another book.I didn't have an easy time obtaining the grade I wanted.I had to go for tutoring.This semester, I had to get this book.Before having this math class (the teacher I had this semester) ANDthis book.. I was dreading math.Now I'm psyched.I wish I'd have had this book last semester, it would have made all the difference.(The teacher is not the only important factor.)If you need it for school, great!But it is also great if you've been out for a while and need to refresh... it is easy breezy to follow (almost don't need a teacher).

Excellent and Easy review
I had a BA and was planning to enter a B.S. program after ten years out ofHigh School.This book was a tremendous help in refreshing my mathematicsskills.The material is presented clearly and in very understandablelanguage.There are periodic tests one can take to chart one's progressbetween chapters, helpful reviews of terminology and appendices with reviewof some fundamentals you may have forgotten as well as a preview of thesort of math this book would lead into if one continued.Read more

A miracle worker?
Yes!I hated math and the very thought of taking it again made me queasy.But thanks to my college's graduation requirements I will once again be sitting in an Algebra class by Spring.Algebra had always been like a foreign language to me, and due to the fact that it has been 10 years since I took high school Algebra, I figured I'd better do some quick brushing-up.This book makes Algebra so accessible...so do-able even.It's divided into 51 practice lessons (the answers are in the back), starting with the basics and gradually moving up in complication.The author clearly breaks the problems down and explains how to work them.The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because although I realize mistakes happen in publishing, I found it pretty inexcusable for a book of this sort to have incorrect symbols in the few places where typos did exist.Granted it doesn't take much to figure out what the author intended but that doesn't make it any less frustrating.

It helped me, and I hate(d) math!
I purchased this book after circling the aisles of my local bookstore for over an hour.It was the only one which was straight-forward, concise, and repetitive.Most study guides are geared toward prepping students for standardized tests.Read more

Too Poorly Written
To be sure, the aim of this book is interesting, but it's too poorly written. There are so many serious mistakes that I wonder why the students who took the course of these authors didn't point them out. A wonderful text!
This text gives a number of proofs of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra (FTA).The proofs come from diverse areas of mathematics including complex analysis, abstract algebra (Galois theory) and topology.A version ofGauss's original proof is even given.The background information leadingup to each proof makes the book readable for a math major who has taken afirst course in abstract algebra.A student who uses this text will haveseen a lot of really interesting mathematics by the end and will have asense of how the mathematics can be used. ...
