4-0 out of 5 stars Boom, Fling, Bang, What fun!
Silly me, I used Ether starting fluid in my first potato cannon. That is downright dangerous. But this was prior to having a nicely written book with several projects that I didn't even think of. I haven't tried any of these projects yet, but they have been carefully thought out with safety in mind. The author also gives interesting backgrounds to the projects. I wouldn't want to be "hoisted with my own petard" as Shakespeare wrote. I'm going to wait till winter with a snow cover before attempting the fire kite. Great stuff! I recommend this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful reference
This is an excellent concise introduction to cardiac catheterization. This book is now in its 4rth edition published in 2003 and includes a wealth of material on the basics of this field.650 pages encompass 10 chapters on topics such as arterial and venous acess, hemodynamic data, angiographic data, EP studies and ablation, research techniques, special techniques, high-risk cardiac catheterization, and interventional techniques. The book includes specific, how-to information. However, this short text is not intended to fully teach such advanced techniques as catheter ablation or interventional cardiology. Very useful tables and clear diagrams are included (496 illustrations).
3-0 out of 5 stars This is a essential reference, but
I have been a cath labo nurse for 3 months. This is a nice book for cath labo staff like me, but there isn't so many figure enough to understand coronary anatomy in angiography and electorophysic study.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cath Lab Staple
The cardiac catheterization handbook is the essential reference for the cardiac cath lab. The book covers a wide range of topics including the cath lab organization, hemodynamics, electrophysiology, angiography and interventions. There are some great diagrams that compare catheter shape and radiographic views which are very helpful for those new to cath lab. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Essential for Chemists!
As a chemist, I am often in need of techniques for purification of various chemicals.Often time is a constraint and the "best" technique may be too time consuming, if one even knows what it is.This text offers several alternatives to the purificatin of most common compounds (especially solvents), including the best way to make the compound pure as well as other known techniques. One can then choose, based on the reaction one is doing whether one needs to use the best techniques or the fastest technique to get mostly pure material or somewhere inbetween.Unfortunately, often the text does not list the actual percent purity that each technique can yield (though it is often easy enough to guess which methodology will yield the best results.)An invaluable resource for any chemist, but especially for graduate students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the "Synthetic" Chemist
This is an indispensible resource for any synthetic chemist, either organic or inorganic (not sure about the biochemical section). This book has concise, informative entries on the purification of a vast number ofcommon solvents and reagents.I don't know how any chemist can survivewithout having this on his/her bookshelf!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Organic Chemist
Like Carey & Sundberg, Jerry March, the Aldrich catalog, and the Merck Index, (etc.), this book should be a benchmate for the Organic Chemist. It is very good when one requires the purification of reagents, or thedrying/purification of solvents. The protocols for purification areusually pretreatment followed by distillation or recrystallization, and canbe carried out to give anywhere from moderately pure material, to givingthe pure, pure substance.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book - information overload
This is a very useful reference to have if you work extensively on HPLC.I find its of more use to understand concepts ...there is a lot of information here.5-0 out of 5 stars Plactical and Rational method Development!
Rational Method development for HPLC is resented. Instruction of rational development of 3-solvent separation system is excellent. This book also has useful know-hows and tools in practical laboratory experiments, such as strength of hydrogen bonding of base silica and nomograph for estimation of"solvent strength" for reversed phase HPLC.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for quick checkups both as interesting just for leafing through
In every well equipped lab this book shouldn't miss. Especially for the beginner in practical work, there occur several situations in the lab in which some of the chapters can turn out to be quite useful. Whether you can't remember the calculation for the concentration of an RNA solution from a measured OD or want to look up how to perform a presentation of your data, this book can help you a lot. With the author's casually interspersed amusing comments it makes even rather delicate and easy to mistake topics as lab courtesy and behaviour in case of a mistake fun to read. The literature list proposed by Kathy Barker matches with what I found useful to read during my first years in microbiology. Altogether, the fact that this book is one of my most ragged and accompanying me from lab to lab speaks for itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory material
I wish I had read this book when I started off on my scientific career. The book provides the broad exposure to a wide array of routine laboratory social culture and techniques without losing the detail which makes such reading meaningful.Even if you have newer or different methods than those provided in the book, reading the book will give you an appreciation for the early methods to which researchers will often refer. This will give the beginner a framework upon which to expand their understanding of the laboratory.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Graduate Students
There are so many things that classes don't teach you! This book can instantly teach the new laboratorian things that experienced laboratorians know but won't share such as: whether to autoclave or filter sterilize or how to be approach someone for help.A lab is full of volatile things the most dangerous of which are the other workers! If you've ever made an experienced lab person angry when you've moved their equipment or borrowed their reagents you'll understand how helpful this book is!

Pavia et al's Organic Laboratory Techniques (2nd Ed) is an astonishingly excellent book for the beginning student.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Lab Text But Not Everyone Has To Buy It

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice!
Excellent explanation. Should cover more detail in Stat though. A lot of people use TI-89 for stat and this book just emphasizes on something else. Overall, nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that should come with the calculator
When you purchase a TI-89, you should be either directed to purchase the Dummies book for it, or it should be included with the device. More informative (and easier reading than the dry manual included) the Dummies book is excellent to assist you in the learning curve and get your money's worth out of the device.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable tool for becoming productive and efficient in your research lab
This is the book all grad students should read because this book discusses the things that you typically don't learn in grad school. The book is meant for new faculty, but anyone interested in learning practical lab management issues is encouraged to read this book. There is something useful in this book for both green rookies and experienced veterans.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for the new professor
I love this book and only wish it was published when I was first starting a faculty position.Definitely a biologist's perspective (and a lab-oriented one at that), but it covers many of the trials and tribulations of starting a new faculty position: setting up a lab, assessing priorities, making hires, managing committees, managing colleagues, etc.5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be caught without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on a number of different levels
I'm a professor of engineering, and decided to use this book as the primary textbook to give a basic idea, for humanities and liberal arts students, of what engineers do.What a great decision! The first part of the book sweeps neatly through basic physics, which is also, as it turns out, basic engineering.Statics, dynamics, friction, thermo--it's all there, neatly encapsulated in a way that humanities students can easily understand what's going on.The text then moves on to the types of things that really float my boat as an engineer--how refrigerators, car engines, and microwave ovens work.Even though I've been involved in engineering for years, and am a licensed professional engineer, I still learned interesting and helpful new ways of thinking about devices and how things work from this book. Moreover, I think this book helps give non-science and non-engineering students the kind of broad-ranging education they *should* be receiving in a university level.Engineering students, after all, have to study at least a modicum of subjects that relate to world history, English, psychology, and so forth. But humanities students can graduate from college without even having the faintest idea about the workings of the technology that can make their lives so healthy, pleasant and liveable.Call me biased or part of the great NASCAR unwashed, but I think it's just as important for a student to be aware of the essentials of how their refrigerator and car work as it is for them to understand the nuances of Shakespeare.Understanding of the fundamentals of technology also leads to students having a better understanding of the tradeoffs involved in good stewardship of the environment.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book.
As a highschool physics teacher, I strongly recommend this book to everyphysics (and science) teacher. It can serve as a source for daily lifeexamples of physics principles in your instructions. Even if you are aninquiry minded person, you are going to find well-designed explanations forthe functioning of lots of tools, machines, etc. in the book. Reallyexciting, rich content, excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what physics is all about!
You don't need to be a physicist to understand this book. Take me for example, I took a year of Physics in college and this is enough for me to grasp the concepts presented in this book. What's so wonderful about thisbook is that it goes beyond the mere equations and formulas we desparatelymemorized before a physics test, it shows that how physics can beincorporated into our lives and improving the quality of our lives. This isa great book for those preparing for the physics AP test and those whosimply want to keep themselves amazed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best buy for practical optics perston: Buiding Electro-Optical Systems: Making It All Work
Briefly speaking, everybody dealing seriiously with optical design, or even doing academic research, should keep this book on the desk all the time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but sorely needs references!
This is an excellent how-to book. It's the Home Depot of optics. But the almost complete lack of references (at least in the edition I reviewed) is a HUGE disappointment. This general text could have been so much more useful with a few selected hooks into the specialized literature.I hope the author and publisher consider this seriously for future editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great American and the exciting story of his experience at NASA.
Reading Gene Kranz's experience as mission controller at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration brought back childhood dreams of being a "space man". Gene Kranz lead an exciting life, and he relates his story through exciting tales from is tenure at NASA.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous as a Source Text
Let's be very upfront on one point: Kranz is not a gifted prose writer. He is a celebrity as a flight director, a competent test pilot, a keystone of one of the finest scientific and engineering achievements in the history of mankind, and probably one of the excellent leaders of the last century. But he is not a gifted writer.
4-0 out of 5 stars Gene Kranz - Biographical review - Leadership in Space exploration
Having been interested in this period of the initial years of the space program, I was hoping to gleen more insite into events and people during this period. I was not let down as some of the details and specifically the difficult logistics of operations was layed out and described. All this without the technology that we have today for satellite communication/Internet etc. Superb description of the Apollo 11 landings and mindset for success of the Apollo 13 events, showing the stunning and legendary team building abilities and decision making insites of the period. Worth reading for anyone interested in those years of Space Exploration. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A battle to read, not worth it in the end.
I was going to write a long and detailed review of this book outlining its many minor and few major flaws. However I notice with these types of books, with controversial subjects, tend to get reviews of two types: If you agree with the subject matter, it was well written. If you don't, it is poorly written.
2-0 out of 5 stars you ought to try walking in their shoes, first
The thing the author does is pass judgment without looking at how the "bad guys" did what they did.An action officer or technical executive has very little time to make decisions.Because the subject matter of the necessary decisions comes from all points of the intellectual compass, the folks under discussion literally cannot be as informed as they would like to be on every thing they must act on.And they must act.Quickly.Excuses for inaction are never acceptable in this business.
3-0 out of 5 stars Seeing the Pentagon from the Inside
The best aspect of this book is that it leaves you asking, "God, if she found all that in one crazy project, what else is out there?"The book is about the (Hafnium)Hf bomb and how it went from nothing to a multi-million dollar project that refused to die.

Editorial Review

This surprising book may appear to be about the simple things of life--forks, paper clips, zippers--but in fact it is a far-flung historical adventure on the evolution of common culture. To trace the fork's history, Duke University professor of civil engineering Henry Petroski travels from prehistoric times to Texas barbecue to Cardinal Richelieu to England's Industrial Revolution to the American Civil War--and beyond. Each item described offers a cultural history lesson, plus there's plenty of engineering detail for those so inclined. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All about the context
I found this book to be very illuminating in light of what I do (interaction design) and the books I have read recently on the latest in computational neuroeconomics, maninstream pattern recognotion theory, interaction design, visual design, industrial design, computer engineering, new marketing theory, and information design around complex systems. In fact, this book is almost a stake in the ground on how the manufacturing process, invention, and branding created the artifacts in our environment. Better than the Industrial Desig books I read 10 years ago. I think we would call these "case studies" and "use cases" in modern terminology. I mention all the fields above because every single one of them have an exact doppelganger in the past.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
while I agree with some of the previous reviews that Petroski may overstate and repeat a little bit, this book is an excellent in depth look at the invention process as practiced by many people in parallel and in concert.
5-0 out of 5 stars An eye opener!

5-0 out of 5 stars Serendipitous...
As well as being extremely detailed, intelligent and helpful, this book is hysterically funny, which makes it a joy to read and easy to understand. A nice change from the usual ...yawn... science-reference manuals. I would strongly encourage other students to take advantage of this terrific piece of work.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
This book promise so much by the wide coverage of topics in Organic lab. but it delivers nothing. Aside from listing the topics in the Table of content. The seemingly knowledable Prof. Zubric presents an unorganize, incomprehensible 294 pages of something that read like a page from a low budget Comic Strip. Am shock that a well respected publishing house like John Wiley and Son would lend their reputation to a low quality like this. The author talked about every thing that are irrelevant. what is needed is a good intro. to the subject like -EXTRACTION and then the stepwise layout of professional quality discussion of headings like - Materials involved; procedure; observation; conclusion etc. he fail to approach the subject prof. The book would pass for a Book of Short Jokes. Do not waste your money. D BOOK DID NOT HELP ME IN MY CLASS ANYWAY...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Stunningly Important Piece of Work
I have been watching the development of William Tiller's work for almost two decades. He is professor emeritus of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University, who has published over 300 scientific papers. Being an academic is no guarantee that everything that he says is correct. Scientists are just like regular folks, with all the same foibles as the rest of humanity. They are more likely to be atheists and to believe in the power of reason over emotion, but that's about it. We have seen countless scientists who have done something brilliant in their youth and then get caught up in eccentric interests later in life: Newton is by no means the only one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Combining Science and Mysticism!
A fresh look at the evidence for psychokinesis and quantum environmental changes in both scientific and laymen's terms. The science gets a little deep for most people, but it is necessary to back up the remarkable theories presented.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sacred Spaces, Sacred Science, Sacred Legacy
Just as many indigenous cultures knew for thousands of years, this book presents thoroughly documented scientific evidence of the amazing things that happen when a group of like-minded souls with experience in expanded states of consciousness focus their intention and will on a common goal. Unfortunately today, many of those cultures are essentially extinct, but many thanks are due to this man and his colleagues - for breaking through the established scientific paradigm, and for offering the hope and tools needed to rescue ourselves, and this planet. From a health and environmental perspective, Dr. Tiller's courageous exploration of the effects of spirit and consciousness on physical reality is an elixir to a world in dire need of new theoretical ideas, and firmly demonstrated alternatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true book for Practitioners and Academicians
This book provides insight into various aspects of design of experiments. Design of experiment is a powerful tool, which is used for process planning, designing and analyzing the experiment, and to obtain effective and efficient conclusion. Author has exploited his industrial and academic experience to provide detailed analysis of design of experiment with examples and hence this book is at centre stage for Decision Makers (DM). On studying this book, DM (engineers and managers) can easily apply design of experiment to real world problems and explore the influence of each and every parameter on the process performance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for both industrial and academic use
"Design of Experiments for Engineers and Scientists" is a well written and easily understandable text on the subject of practical experimental design considerations.Whether you are a practicing engineer in business or an instructor at an academic institution, I think that you will find this to be an excellent introductory textbook. It is simple enough for an engineer that does not have an extensive statistical or mathematical background to read through once, grasp the concepts and be able to apply experimental design techniques to improve his company's performance. The graphical presentations are very helpful in this regard. It is also detailed enough to use in a graduate course to introduce engineers to the subject of practical experimental design techniques.Having held a variety of industrial engineering positions from process engineer to member of the Board of Directors before returning to academia, I feel that I am well qualified to judge the value of this book.I have taught a graduate class in experimental design techniques for several years at a major university and will include this as a text for my future classes.Being a consultant in the areas of Six Sigma, and Lean Six Sigma, I feel this text will also be very useful for my industrial clients as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jiju Antony Design of Experiments for Engineers & Scientists
"This is a Must-Have Concise Textbook for individuals wishing to understand the essence and essentials of the Design of Experiments (DOE) subject matter in a minimum of time. For its relatively smaller size and greater depth of coverage, the textbook is excellent, providing a clear, concise and very effective treatment of the useful and revealing body of knowledge composing DOE. For emphasis, the text explains fundamental DOE concepts effectively, while the breadth of topics coverage is very rich. High school and college students, scientists and engineers, professionals and researchers all alike, can deploy the techniques presented in this DOE text to deepen their understanding of processes with particular respect to experimental process variables effects, their magnitudes and interactions; furthermore the textbook provides direction for the optimization of the processes being studied."
