Excellent book - fills a long standing gap
I feel the book really fills a long standing gap in this field, since nonlinear analysis (especially geometric nonlinear analysis) is always treated slightly ambiguously by other authors. The book is extremely clear and consistent in its manner of explanation. Witty + Concise + Useful = Excellent
This book is a refreshingly witty and concise look at--of all things--hypergeometric identities.If you have never heard of a binomial coefficient, or shudder at the thought of a double factorial, of fail to see what's so special about special functions, then you are unlikely to derive much pleasure from this volume. On the other hand, if you've encountered gamma functions, Catalan numbers, and Grobner bases, and would delight in discovering deep connections among such vastly different ideas, or if you have wondered how computers can be used to discover or verify monstrous combinatorial identities, then you've stumbled upon a book that is sure to become a favorite. The mathematics described in the book "A=B"lead to the awarding of a Steele Prize by the American Mathematical Society to Herbert Wilf and Doron Zeilberger.What the authors have done is to discover a wayof using computer algebra and some mathematical ideas they and others hadearlier to make it possible to find the sum of most of the hypergeometricand basic hypergeometric series which can be summed. This method also leadsto recurrence relations when polynomial series cannot be summed.It doesnot work for all series, but most of the time it does work.This book andthe ideas in itshould be part of the working knowledge of anyone who usesspecial functions of hypergeometric or basic hypergeometric type.

Difficult to understand
I took Prof Kwon's class and used this book.It was very difficult to understand.Bathe's book is much more clear.

There has to be a better book to learn FE.
Professor Young Kwon teaches at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. I used this book in his class and found little difference when I compared it to the first edition. The first edition has some minor errors, but the problem sets for each chapter along with the Matlab programs provided are very much the same.The first chapter has some basic Matlab necessities and the second chapter covers weighted residual methods (strong / weak formulation, least squares, collocation, and Galerkin). There is a one paragraph summary of the Raleigh-Ritz method (derived from Calculus of Variations), which is more accurate but not as popular as Galerkin.I found a much better explanation of these weighted residual methods in an undergraduate numerical analysis book.The remainder of the book covered shape functions, isoparametric functions, numerical integration techniques, boundary and initial value problems, eigenvalue problems, beams, shell and plates, and trusses. understanding the finite element method
This book carries on from the first edition, lots of new theories andprograms have been added. The errors in the last edition(1996) have beencorrected. This book is a must for people who want to understand the finiteelement method and for people who want to learn how to program it using'Matlab'. A Context For the Classics
Essential to understanding the writtings of Joyce is understanding the world he lived in. Bear in mind that all of his works were, more or less, either autobiographical, or were about the world he lived in. This compilation of the many details of Joyces life shows us the minutiathat made up books like "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," "Ulysses," and "Finnegans Wake." If properly used, this provides the key to interpreting the dense allusions and motives of his impressive body of work. After perhaps the works of Tindall, Bishop and Campbell, this is the most usefull book you can get to help understand the works of Joyce.

Wide-ranging, well-written browsing material!
Presents, in alphabetical order, brief (one paragraph to about 2 pages)synopses and explanations of people, places, themes, and phrases formseveral of Joyce's works, including his major novels and his poetry. Wonderful as either a tool for decoding Joyce, or as "skimming material." It's a treat to just wander through these pages, seeing explanations for`Finnegan' across from those for "Dubliners," a biography of T.S.
