Written for teachers, not students
Do textbook authors ever consider how *students* will view their books?I doubt it.It seems to be a consist idea that textbooks -- including and exemplified by this one -- are written by teachers, for teachers, with little regard for students.Just read the product description to see what I mean: "goal-oriented pedagogy", "consistant pedagogical use of color", "enhances student motivation" -- these are items focused to receive acclaim by other teachers.
Finite math blah
This was an alright book for finite math.The book did contain real examples (a positive) along with tons of formulas that I'm not sure that I'll ever see again.The probability stuff was good from this book, butsome of the explanations were lacking clarity.Some of the topics include:Finance, linear programming of the simplex method and geometric approach, graphs, trees, counting, statistics along with relations and functions. ... Why was Spinoza Excommunicated?
Benedict (Baruch) Spinoza (1632 - 1677) was one of the most seminal philosophers in history.His work constitutes a crucial component of Enlightenment thought and of modern secularism.In 1656, at the age of 23, Spinoza was excommunicated from the Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam in which he had grown up.Excommunication was not an uncommon occurence at that time and place, but the excommunicating document banning Spinoza is extremely and unusually harsh. An introduction to some advanced theorems on graphs
The author has spent most of his professional life pondering some of the more substantial problems in graph theory. This book is not a comprehensive treatise on the subject but an organized collection of a series of lectures that he delivered in 1984. The lectures were just as much an attempt to provide insight into the process that led to some advanced theorems as about the theorems themselves. An excellent and thorough introduction.
This book is a gem.It explains the fundamentals underlying FEM and also has examples of practical applications.The overall presentation is clear, easy to read, and rigorous.It is an excellent introduction to the topic that I find myself referring back to time and again.

A Classic in Combinatorics

Anything but Muddled
This is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. Rudy Rucker is an accomplished science fiction author and popularizer of mathematics and computer science. In this book he seems to bring together everything he has written in the past while playing with constructing a coherent world-view and philosophy of life. It works quite well. (Rucker is such a fascinating writer that my son was going to apply to San Jose State just to take classes from him. The book's revelation that Rucker is retiring disappointed my college-bound son and left him scrambling for other schools.)
A Technical Introduction with Soul to Spare
I found Rudy Rucker on a road trip.Or at least, I found part of his lifebox.If you haven't yet read this book, you probably don't know that the lifebox is a fictional invention into which a person speaks, and eventually it gets to know him well enough to tell his stories, and perform more menial conversational duties.That was Wetware, the first of his books that I read.Since then, I've read everything of his I could get my hands on, and I anxiously awaited the arrival of my pre-ordered copy of The Lifebox, the Seashell, and the Soul.
universal automaton
As a disiple of the Stephen Wolfram's universal automaton paradigm this book does a good job of looking at the different areas of science to see how they work with such a view.Taking on issues like free-will, quantum mechanics, and psychology he attempts to demonstrate there compatibility with his thesis that the world consists of computations.I recommend this book to anyone how has interests in determinism, aritificial intelligence, and/or Wolframs "new science" as this book has something of value to offer on all this areas. ... Classic in Probabilistic Design
If there are two textbooks in probabilistic design that are really worth buying, I would reccomend this one and its companion volume "Probability, Reliability and Statistical Methods in Engineering Design" by the same authors. What makes these books so useful is the clear and effective writing style of the authors - which is why its a favorite amongst undergrads, grads and reliability engineers in Industry. Excellent Study
Crisfield's first and second books are excellent sources for anyone from different disiplines. His success can be attributed to explaining the materials in their simple forms and to his notations that is easy to follow. Starting from 1D nonlinear truss elements to 3D beam-column elements, all concepts are explained in a similar way so once you are into it, it is easy to follow the text. I mostly studied his work on finite rotations, and arc-length algorithms.

Non-linear FEM for mere mortals.
