5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Price just for the Pictures
This is my favorite coffee table book and the best introduction to fractals I've come across.I've also read James Gleick's "Chaos:Making a New Science", and it's good, but whenever I want to contemplate the wonder of chaos and fractals I open this book.High quality color printing on good paper with a larger font (I'm guessing 14pt.) for tired eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Patterns to Inspire - A Captivating Look into Fractals
This book brings a comprehensive and visually intriguing approach to the study of fractal geometry and the chaos theory. Through thought provoking imagery and discernible explanations & comparisons, John Briggs has sparked my curiosity where I now look more closely at the world around me. I believe this book is intended to captivate those with the ability to visualize and appreciate the aesthetics and interconnectedness of the arts, sciences and the natural phenomena that surrounds us. An insightful & visually stimulating read!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book
This book says absolutely nothing. It has a few good pictures (the best one is one the cover by the way), but the text is utterly worthless and uninformative. My favorite quote from the book is "Nonlinear means not linear."Really?Don't waste your money. Now I understand why I found it at the used bookstore. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good book but for specialist
The book provides a lot of material but it left me the impression of a core material hidden in "a bittoo many" technicalities, being the textbook more likely suitable as a reference for a specialist (I amnot) than for a reader interested in the subject. I really appreciated thechapter "Fractal Functions and Wavelets", a good description oflinks beetween wavelets and fractals. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Full coverage of fractal image compression
In my opinion, Fisher's book can serve as a very good tutorial to fractal image encoding. The first chapter, probably better known as the "SIGGRAPH '92 Course Notes", can be understand easily even by non-scientist and be used to code your own basic compression engine. The other chapters go more into detail and show how to develop your coder to a #1 compression engine. Unfortunately, you sometimes need to read between the math to get the necessary information. Anyway, after reading the book, I was able to create some nice code and to compress color images up to 1:25 ... 1:100 in seconds or minutes without problems !

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful anthology of science writing
John Carey's Eyewitness to Science is identical to The Faber Book of Science except for the cover and weight of the paper stock used. Since the latter is now out of print, those of you who have missed the opportunity to read this delightfully eclectic anthology of science writing may wish to consult this edition before it, too, goes out of print.

5-0 out of 5 stars A choppy book about great connections in the web of nature
As a geologist, I read the samples that seemed relevant first, and found many surprising and wonderful things like Huxley's geology of Europe derived partly from careful observations of a piece of chalk. I went on to read biology, physics, poetry and abnormal sex.I am teaching a freshman literature class this winter quarter and managed to lighten up Conrad's gloomy brooding view that we evolved from soulless animals by reading Cumming's (Pg 262) retort; "As for me, I am proud of my close kinship with other animals. I take jealous pride in my Simian ancestry. I like to think that I was once a magnificent hairy fellow living in the trees and that my frame has come down through geological time via sea jelly and worms and Amphioxus, Fish, Dinosaurs, and Apes. Who would exchange these for the pallid couple in the Garden of Eden?"

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of nonlinear dynamics
This book is an overview of all of the components of nonlinear dynamics. Nonlinear dynamics is a field of study that enables well-constructed predictive modeling of systems that might be difficult to solve otherwise. Such continuous systems were first widely modeled by ordinary and differential equations, but with the passage of time there are now tools and mathematical models at our disposal that make for a much more concise model of many systems. This workbook tries to touch on all of those mathematical tools. The first six chapters of the book has to do with modeling such complex systems in general, and the rest of the book is a survey of the tools needed to perform complex modeling. The book's format is that of briefly explaining a concept in a few pages, and then presenting a computer program that demonstrates the concept just explained. The explanations are very clear and concise, there are plenty of equations shown, and the accompanying code is well commented. If you want to really drill deeply into any of the concepts then you are going to need some other books. I suggest that for further reading for the mathematically inclined that you pick up "Chaos: An Introduction to Dynamical Systems" by Kathleen Alligood. For scientists that want to see specific problems that can be solved by dynamical systems I suggest the excellent "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos: With Applications in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Engineering" by Strogatz. The only real complaint I have against this book is that there is uneven coverage of different tools. For example, the author has a great deal to say about neural networks and fuzzy logic, but has very short chapters covering discrete wavelets and cellular automata. More material would have been great, since it is hard to find good books on discrete wavelets and cellular automata in particular. Some readers may also be annoyed that much of the book are code listings of the various demonstration programs. Overall, I would highly recommend it as one of several books that anyone interested in dynamical systems should definitely own. In particular, those individuals interested in the techniques of algorithmic composition of music might find this book a good jumping off point for studying the tools and techniques that make such compositions possible.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful in some sections
The topics covered in this book are all important from the standpoint of applications in physics, engineering, computer science, financial engineering, and computational biology. It is written for the person just getting started in these topics, and the author does a fairly good job of discussing them. Readers should not expect, and they will not get, in-depth discussions on these topics, as this would swell the book to 10 times the size. They will however get preparation for moving on to more advanced and complete treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Laying of Cornerstones of Modern Math
The title of this book is subversive.Compared to the contents of other popular books on fractals, such as Peitgen & Saupe's "Chaos and Fractals", the reader will find almost no commonality except for the word "fractal" in the title. And this is what makes this book so wonderful and refreshing.Other pop books on fractals tend to be filled with shallow descriptions, crude phenomenology, and neither hint of the underlying theory, nor any clue of the depth and importance of it.The Peitgen-Saupe series is particularly guilty of this fault.
4-0 out of 5 stars Where it all began
This anthology is a collection of the classic essays on chaos, from before chaos theory was created or the word 'fractal' was coined. The math level is a little high for the general reader, but it is well worth reading once the reader has the necessary background. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A frustratingly unstraightforward book.
This is not a book I would recommend. Whilst the subject matter is very interesting the style of presentation of the material is not to my liking. As opposed to simply explaining how fractal image compression works, theauthor indulges in chapters of overly philosophic theory. There is aplethora of mathmatical and logical notation (which you are left to fendwith for yourself). In its more pretentious moments it's almost comical, with the author becoming ridiculously poetic.5-0 out of 5 stars Great IT described and worked by a mathematican!
There are a lot of details about fractal imaging, including IFS, RIFS, techniques. What is more, it provides many very good examples of worked images, figures, tables. All these make the book easier to read. I like it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book that shows the art of science.
It is an amazing book that presents fractal theory and compression algorithms in such a poetic manner.I was glad finally there is a book that covers fractal image compression in such a complete and systematic wayfrom Iterated Systems. The book also displayed the linkage betweenscience, philosophy and art by using fractal image compression as anexample, which is awesome. Most C-codes are very efficiently writen as forthe performance, so I wish there were more explanations for betterunderstanding. It is a book quite difficult to read for it is unique inits style as well as many subjects.Again, more details will be helpful. Overall, I am very much enjoyed the reading, found as the author said: youwill find "something new every time you open it." P.S. It's niceto have the free product Fractal Imager too! ... Read more
