5-0 out of 5 stars Great mathematics and graphics
The mathematician Felix Klein(1849-1925) made some great discoveries that can now be well understood by using computer graphics.Felix Klein is known for his work in non-euclidean geometry and for his work on the connections between geometry and group theory.
5-0 out of 5 stars How mathematics can be used to create physical beauty
As a long-time reviewer of mathematics books, there was a time when I grew very bored with books written for the general mathematical audience. For years, it seemed mandatory that all contain a section on basic fractals and the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. It was not that the topics were not interesting, I found them fascinating, it was just that the explanations were all so similar that it became tedious to read them. Therefore, when I looked at the coverage of this book, I felt a pang of negative nostalgia, thinking that what I would find would be a repeat of what I had read so many times.5-0 out of 5 stars Discrete groups made easy

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing! How does he come up with this stuff?!
Like the first book in this series "Virtual Mode", this is another wonderful trip into an area never gone to before in a novel and a unique way of getting there. As a writer, Mr. Anthony never ceases to amaze me!He always entertains while educating you at the same time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book
This book is very interesting, covering a variety of topics from child abuse to in-depth discussion of fractals, love to culture, society to magic.Piers shows an acute knowledge of the scientific aspects of what he writes about. The book seemed to focus a little too much on helping Nona, and not enough about the MAIN characters, but this didn't detract from the book too much. The settings are varied, as always with Anthony, as are the characters.Anthony provides much insight to what Colene is thinking, which I think is the most interesting part of the book-- to see how she reacts mentally to things like stress, Darius, her parents, etc. There are heartwarming moments, and some interesting happenings back at good old normal Earth. Many different things happen, settings change quickly, minor characters come and go, but the plot runs smoothly enough and what the gang learns along the way is interesting and their adventures are still fun, sometimes amusing--they get stuck in one really odd situation in Nona's reality! If you read Virtual Mode and are interested in how Colene and Darius' relationship will grow and change, and how Nona plays into their scheme, and if Colene and Darius will EVER settle down back in Darius' home reality...this is a good book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Confused?
I think that people looking for a book that they can just chill with, litrally switch their brain off and read are going to hate this book. Ithas references to maths, explanations of magic, totally-twisty landscapes,in depth character profiles and a totally confusing multi-realitystoryline. Oh, and some sexual references too, which might wake some up.This is the second book of the series that touched me, I love it and couldrecommend it (and have) to anyone. Read it, read them all! I await thearrival of my Chaos Mode book.. and whats this I hear about another! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Short, packed with information, math backround needed
If you want to read this book, there are a couple of recommendations from me:
5-0 out of 5 stars For people seeking to program Fractals or Chaos
This is a great book. Only until you work with it will you find how good it is. My favorite thing in this book is what the author calls contraction mirroring and is discussed in chapters 4,5,6,8.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic of Fractals
In all my library of fractal books this one stands out as the most enlightening and the most useful. Hans Lauwerier is a master of Chaos and fractal theory. His method of analysis of IFS fractals is the best. He is just publishing a new book that should be rewarding as well. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars My letter to Dr. Pickover about this book:
I got the Complex Dynamics book that Dr. McMullen recommended and I linked last to Amazon.com : there is no mention of programming anywhere in the book! It is Ivory tower math that enshrines the " Julia set" asperfect mathematics, ha, ha... Since I have used IFS to simulate Julia setsexperimentally, I can say that I have a hard time recognizing it in theirlanguage!Something is dreadfully wrong in this axiomatic approach thatignores the actual math that is calculated and it's methods! The thesis onHerman's rings by the Dane is as good a complex dynamics text as this oneand he actually defines terms like quasicomformal in Riemannian terms sothat it can be understood! There is a real need for better bridging booksbetween graduate level axiomatic approaches and beginning complex variablesand programming! It should probably not be written by a professor type whowill be forced to bend to " peers" in his use of language.Definition of terms and glossaries are so sadly missing in so many of thesebooks! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic introduction to the field...
I am a graduate student in statistical physics with a primary interest in diffusion-limited reactions. I have found the above book to be invaluable, so much so that I'm disappointed that I didn't know about it earlier, as I'm sure it would have accelerated my understanding. It is, in my opinion, the best introduction to the field of diffusion-limited reactions that I'm aware of and certainly makes the research literature in this area much more accessible. I have also found the other sections of the book to be particularly illuminating and essential background reading, with Part I covering many of the principles of statistical physics. Each chapter contains a list of exercises to enhance understanding of the material and a list of "Open Challenges" which provoke new avenues of research. I personally think that the book references the research literature extremely well (indeed the authors have themselves made substantial contributions to the field) which makes it easy to pursue further details on areas of interest. I regard the book as essential for anyone wishing to develop an understanding of anomalous diffusion in disordered media and to be particularly accessible to graduate students and young researchers. It has certainly made it easier for me to make the transition from student to researcher in this area of statistical physics. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What?
I like the format of these books, but the problem for me is that this one does not fulfil its brief, which is presumably to be, as its title implies, an introduction to a difficult subject for those not well-versed in science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This is one of my favorite maths books. My interest in it is not so much for the discussion of chaotic systems, but more for that on stochastically perturbed systems. As far as this topic goes, this is the best book I've found in the field by far.The treatment is careful and self-contained, and the proofs are clear throughout.Lots of intuition is given with each result.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is quite thorough, but remains easy to follow (considering the material). It starts out with partial differential equations (no previous PDE experience needed) and shows where Fourier series comes from, which I found motivating since the purpose of Fourier Analysis was evident from the beginning. It then goes into making solutions of arbitrary functions out of sine and cosine functions as well as touching on other orthogonal sets.5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for an intro to pde's course!
My first encounter with partial differential equations was out of this book.Since then, I've had another course on pde's, and used this book as a reference quite often.Fourier Series adn Boundary Value Problems is very much like Complex Variables and Applicatoins, also by Churchill and Brown. It's accessible to a large audience.Though it would help to have had an advanced calculus course, it isn't necessary to understand the mechanics of solving pde's (namely the variables seperable cases, which is mostly what's in this book). If you're an undergraduate math, engineering or physics student, you'll probably be using this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Try Another Text
I found Dr. Brown, in conjunction with Dr. Churchill, to have written avery dry and non-useful text.It fails to provide the undergraduatestudent with the resources and background information that more highlytouted books offer. There are a few examples that are somewhat helpful, but overall I found myself having to use reference texts to supplement thisone.I am not a math major, but am continually searching for good mathtexts to help me grasp the fundamentals of more difficult topics.I didnot find that help here.Too much 'math prose' and not enough to-the-pointdefinitions and examples, which is the cry of every non-math major. Theirtreatment of the Laplacian is not even worth the bother of placing it inthe book. The physical size of the book is small, (9 1/2 by 6") with335 pages. Not nearly enough for the treatment of its titled subject. ... Read more
