5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Volume!
This volume by Johnson and Lapidus is an excellent guide to the Feynman integral and Feynman's operational calculus. The authors bring together a great deal of the background material needed for the study of the integral and operational calculus so as to make the volume mostly self-contained.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best book to learn measure theory from
this is a great, clearly written book that excels as a book to learn analysis from.the book takes a ground up approach, starting with only the positive real line and generalizing from there.being presented in the most simple context where all the abstraction is stripped away, the essence of the arguments is laid bare and thus the proofs are as understandable as possible.then, once the arguments are made and the intuition is in place, the book proceeds to generalize the results to more abstract circumstances. thus makingthe motivation for using more powerful tools clear.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best real analysis books
For the past two semesters, our professor used this book as textbook. I didn't buy this book during that time. But when I was preparing for the final exam, I borrowed the book from library, and found it was really well-written. Basic materials are well organized and explained. Some profound and important topics are also covered, like Hardy-Littlewood max function; these materials are also explained in a clear and easy-to-follow way. Thus I decided to buy this book to prepare for my Real Analysis prelim and as future reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars A (quasi) masterpiece
4 stars, which actually means 4.5. I don't rate it the maximum, because I think it lacks a couple of things to be perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars A five-star book
I was appalled at the poor reviews this book has received. It3-0 out of 5 stars Assumes too much from the readers
This book consists in brief review of the fourier transform and a few applications. The brief review in the first two chapters is ok Only the essentials are given and the proofs are omitted. The problem starsts with the applications. There are applications to difraction of light to information theory and so on. However too much is assumed from the students with respect to those applications .After reading the chapters the students , i suspect, will ask what they have learned.A little more material explaining what the applications are about would improve the book a lot.It is almost useless in the present form ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
When I started reading analysis, I was unfortunately asked to start with Rudin's book. But that book was totally inacessible probably because I come from engineering background. In search of more readable books, I started reading Apostol. It was readable but I wasn't enjoying the subject. Recently, I came across Abbott's book and was totally blow away. It is simply amazing. It makes analysis enjoyable and at the same time you learn a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too Good To be True
Once in a while, a book comes along that is so wonderfully written, the reader reflexively searches for other books by its author. Understanding Analysis is a prime example of this rare breed (Unfortunately, this is Abbott's only book as far as I know: write more!).
3-0 out of 5 stars beware, no solutions
Good book, but no solutions to any exercises. Usually Springer books do have some solutions, so it was a bit disappointing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book: very clear, covers a great deal of material too
This is the closest I come to a favourite book on Complex Analysis. It wins on clarity, amount of material covered, and the order in which topics are presented.
4-0 out of 5 stars One for your reference shelf.
Gamelin's 'Complex Analysis' is purported to be a text that, while it falls in the UTM series, can really be used for anything up through the Ph.D. qualifying exam level. This is true, but there are some problems with this text that would keep it from true brilliance.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's pretty good
The explanations were clear, and the exercises are usefull. It's fairly rigorous, but avoids getting so tangled up in rigor that it obscures the conceptual development of the book. Also, it avoids the persistent (and dreadfull) habit of presenting in the proposition, lemma, corollary, theorem, format which finds its way into a lot of analysis books. Also, I though it was nice that the book develops some concepts from real analysis (continuity, convergence of sequences and series, etc...) so that the book was fairly self contained. Finally, I liked the two sections on applications to fluid dynamics, but I wish the book would have included some further applications.Overall, a good introduction to the subject.(Although it contains way more material than one can cover in a semester) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful first course for enthousiasts
The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that I am not a great fan of Conway's style, and have wasted too much time on mangled examples in his Complex Analysis.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Course in Functional Analysis ... the title is correct!
I learned functional analysis by studying this book. I did this under the direction of a master teacher, John Erdman, who taught via a modified Moore Method. I found this very inspirational and challenging. BEFORE I took thecourse, I did not enjoy browsing the book, BUT I learned that the book, upon combination with the right amount of focus and effort, did aremarkable job of bringing functional analysis alive ... of transmiting thereal essence to young, "sprouting" mathematicians. There is alsoan informality that brings a freshness to the book ... and this in asubject that could easily be studied without encountering this importantingredient in a mathematician's training.5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book !
This book is just excellent. The author decides to do something a little unusual, and starts talking about "Hilbert Spaces" before talking about "Banach Spaces". Conway writes down the matereal in a greatway. He gives proves to almost every proposition, and gives lots ofEXAMPLES and EXCERCISES (which are not given in most of the books aboutthis subject). It's a good book for people who have never read this bookbefore, as well as people who are currently studying the course. Also, conway extends the book's content by writing about advanced subjects (thatare not studied in a first course about the subject), like locally convexspaces, weak topologies and even unbounded operators. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It is one very interesting book
To me, the best chapters of this book are that about series and integrals. The text is plenty of interesting notions, like that of direction that is related with the notion of limit. I appreciated very much the study that Shilov does about parameter-dependent proper and improper integrals. The topologicalnotions are placed in one intuitive manner. Without doubt, this is one very good and clear exposition about the subject. However, I think that the problems are not easy. Also sometimes Shilov states the theorems with additional conditions that are not useful. For example, this happens usually in the chapter about derivatives because the definition of derivative given by Shilov imposes that any function with derivative in the interval of the domain has continuous derivative in the interior points of its domain. However, Shilov charges some theorems with the extra condition of continuous derivative.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent pure maths text.
I purchased this book to study some complex analysis.Being a physicist I would like to brush up on this. The book was completely different to what I expected.
5-0 out of 5 stars Getting started in math analysis
This book by Shilov covers the fundamentals in beginning analysis(both real and complex). It has in common with Walter Rudin's book (entitled 'Real and Complex Analysis') that it covers both real functions (integration theory and more), as well as Cauchy's theorems for analytic functions. Shilov's book is at an undergraduate level, and it can easily be used for self-study. The Dover edition is affordable. Rudin's book is for the beginning graduate level, and it is widely used in math departments around the world. Both books have stood the test of time.

1-0 out of 5 stars INCOMPLETE EXPLANATIONS
This book cannot be used without purchasing the actual book which it represents. This book has some solutions for another complex analysis book. What I thought was, that this book is similar to something like Schaum's solved problems (which is independent and not dependent on another book). In many cases, there is no work shown at all, and simply the answers. So its really of no use and has a deceptive title. I already had 4 other books in complex analysis, so there was no need for me to purchase another book which it represents.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Right Stuff !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought this book with the goal to enhance my problem solving skills on complex analysis. I am a theoritical physics student and needed to gain a very comprehensive and operational understanding of the topic. This book had it all: it's very well written, very rigourous and gives an extra dimension to just reading a pure text explaining the theory of the subject. I wish we had this type of books in physics ! Lang's book and Shakarchi's solutions are the winning combination to learn complex analysis!!!!! 2 thumbs up ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Thorough Examples & Explanations
This book was required for the DE classes at UTexas for a first/second year student, encountering DE's for the first time. The book is very comprehensive in teaching all aspects of DE's.However, the book is very dry and difficult to get through. The worst thing is that is impossible to get through this book without some supplemental material. For examples, the book uses proofs instead of examples that can be applied to the homework several times. In addition the examples on countless occassions are like it can be shown through some simple calculations(which they won't show you)(it skips steps) that you can get to some other formula and you're like how did they do that?In addition the notation/symbols they use are not defined all the time, and this leads to extra confusion when trying to learn something new.Overall the examples are vague.

1-0 out of 5 stars Probably the most convoluted book on the topic
One of the many problems with this book is the order in which the topics are presented.Right off the bat, They decide to put linear equations ahead of all other types of DE's.Are they really as simple to solve as seperable equations? The entire second chapter is a complete mess and is very disorganized. The forumla for the integrating factor of linear equations is difficult to ascertain, and it is never clearly stated (it's there, but their notation is convoluted).I don't want to sound like someone who is just having difficulty with the math taking it out on the innocent textbook.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but not the best...
I think this book is the best among the standard "undergraduate" textbooks for diffeq--i.e., the ones with flashy colorful covers that are re-released in a new edition way too often.
