5-0 out of 5 stars A well-written book on a difficult subject
K-theory is a challenging subject; Kasparov's KK-theory even more so. But Bruce Blackadar's textbook manages to present both of these in a clear and coherent fashion, readable both by mathematicians and physicists. The ideal reader of this book will already be familiar with the basics of operator algebras and will have had some exposure to K-theory (perhaps through Wegge-Olsen's remarkable book) and noncommutative geometry; but an extensive background is not needed. 5-0 out of 5 stars A difficult book on a difficult subject
The books covers not only K-theory but also KK-theory that was introduced by G. G. Kasparov. The original article by Kasparov are very hard to read because of the generality of his approach. Furthermore the theory was muchsimplified by Skandalis et al. The second part of the book offers a veryreadable introduction to KK-theory. Now the new edition even contains ashort exposition of E-theory.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More Rigorous Than Some Introductory Texts
I purchased Introduction to Metric and Topological Spaces two years ago. I was unprepared for its rigor.I am not a mathematics major, but I enjoy reading mathematics. My background includes calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and other applied mathematics, but I have not had a course in real analysis. W. A. Sutherland intended this text as the next step after analysis.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, concise book on topology and metric spaces.
I enjoyed reading this book because of its clarity, conciseness, and niceway of relating topologicaland metric spaces. This book is ideal for thestudent who is learning about these subjects for the firsttime, whetheror not they intend to do more advanced work on the subject. The reader whowants to go on and learn about more advanced topics, should consultMunkres's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great self-contained text
A lot of books on topology assume some basic knowledge of real analysis, which can throw a lot of readers off. This book starts from the verybeginning, and thus is truly a great introduction. Each section has somegood exercises, with even a few pointers at the back of the book for themore challenging ones. It starts with topological aspects, and then refersto them in the case of metric spaces (amongst many others), which is a muchbetter approach than most other books, as the reader doesn't take thedetails of the specific to the general. A great little book, which is amust for most advanced maths Analysis courses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This (Graylock, Red ) Edition Seems Preferable.
Every time I come back to this book I like it more,
5-0 out of 5 stars It's a classic
I own the book in Spanish language. Some content in the book is not easy stuff, if you study by others books, but Kolmogorov has the gift to make easy things that aren't quite so easy. Perhaps some theory is "old", because all the new books use some diferent approach to the subject, like the chapter dedicated to the Lebesgue integral, the book give the definition of a simple function in a different manner that we use today. The book is a must to have in your library, when you need to work with Functional Analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Four stars for the content, five stars for the price.
This book is not quite up-to-date, but still very good as a starting point in (functional) analysis. The virtue of Kolmogorov and Fomin is their user-friendly writing style. I am delighted to find their book being available for less than ten dollars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book but for specialist
The book provides a lot of material but it left me the impression of a core material hidden in "a bittoo many" technicalities, being the textbook more likely suitable as a reference for a specialist (I amnot) than for a reader interested in the subject. I really appreciated thechapter "Fractal Functions and Wavelets", a good description oflinks beetween wavelets and fractals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The unity of math!
The popular press leaves us with the impression that math is 4-0 out of 5 stars Makes the others Look bad
I got this book as a gift from a long time friend. He had trouble with reading it. It is only for that reason I give it only 4 stars. These authors make others that I have read on this range of subjects look bad: Fields Medalists included! A lot of it is that they just bother to give you the real mathematics with examples. I think the initial miss definition of the Riemann surface gives a false impression, because the explanations of ramified covers and toral elliptic lattices is just wonderful. Reading this book makes Dr. Singerman'spapers look so much better! I was disappointed in the treatment of triangle groups, but the treatment of modular functions and gamma1 and gamma2 makes up for that. It is a masterful work... the best I have seen by a modern author. It reminds me of books by Ulam or Russell. Sawyer's little book is not as good!

5-0 out of 5 stars long on content, short on abstract nonsense
This is a great book because it presents some of the neatest topics in mathematics, without the usual discouraging layers of abstraction and notation. It attacks the topics historically so you get some idea of the motivation and steps followed, instead of a compendium of the most general results and their most elegant proofs.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A somewhat useful scrapbook with a poor second half
Chapters 1 and 2 treat classical differential and integral calculus. This is a disorganised mess of historical and mathematical tidbits. It's not a great place to learn calculus, but it's good side reading since there are many interesting topics, some of which are often neglected in today's books: continued fractions (!), complex functions already on page 56, an interesting section on differential geometry, Euler-Maclaurin summation, etc. The authors also have the very commendable habit of including charming facsimiles of figures from original works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, unorthodox, a very commendable approach.
I wish there had been books like this when I was at (high)school! It isone of those rare books that bridge the yawning gap between the popularpersonalised history books that are so inspiring to the young mind, (eg.E.T.Bell's "Men of Mathematics", Kasner & Newman's"Mathematics & the Imagination" or Kak & Ulam's"Logic and(?) Mathematics") and the terse, somewhat desiccateduniversity text books. This can leave the undergraduate not fullyappreciating the motivation for exhaustive rigor and also losing anyperspective of where the abstract theorems and lemmas are ultimatelydistilled from. This book links the historical characters, controversiesand challenges with the modern techniques that gradually emerged to dealwith the pathological behaviour of sets, series and functions. It would bea mistake to confuse this book, as some of your reviewers have done, withthe many first-year undergraduate texts that are available. It could beregarded as a sophisticated high school book that gives a real flavour of how the classical problems are treated in modern rigorous style, oralternatively as a colourful motivational aid to early undergraduateanalysis courses. I hope that the publishers encourage similar ventures inother branches of the subject, for instance algebra, differential &integral equations, probability and perhaps even quantum theory.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mathematics made concrete
This book's aim is really to teach analysis. It is not a book on history of science, the kind you read like a novel. The difference with a standard text is it proceeds after the historic evolution. It's quite an audaciousapproach, for mathematical rigor flowing from axioms towards theoremsthrough lemmas and hypothesis doesn't fit well with historical connectionswhich are chaotic, incomplete and abstruse. It's really not like the(many) books which have great concern for historical context discussed inappendices or footnotes. Here the history is underlying everything,but--once again--it isn't an history book anyway. Theorems are proved.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Any Good If You Aren't An Expert In Algebra
I bought this book to explain in simple language how to use the functions of the TI-30 I bought. The book gives you equations to plug in, but absolutely no explanation as to why the equations are set up as they are. It is totally useless for a person to buy this and try to learn on their own without the the aid of a teacher to explain the construction of the algebraic expression. After reading for 4 hours I was disappointed and will look for another book. It does show some neat graphs that the owner's manual doesn't get into, but if don't know how to create the equation it's a useless tool. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars May irritate some readers
This book tries to be accessible to a very wide audience. In Australia, where I did my undergraduate studies this could have been read by a beginning first year university student.
5-0 out of 5 stars Calculus done right
I'm just gonna come out and say it: this book is the best treatment of multivariable calculus that I've seen.
5-0 out of 5 stars A singularity in books on differential forms
Reading this book reminds me of "Feynman Lectures in Physics" : Anextremely refreshing view of analysis.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended - authors did not put too much thoughts
Obviously the basic concept is as before, but the teaching approach is very outdated.I am a serious maths student, 2 years ahead of my math class.I like to use the CDrom to study and I am so very surprised that the publisher allows a winsow 95/98 version of Cd-rom to be sold with this latest book. I believe a lot of tech craze students will have difficulties reading the disc.Ziegler is a big name, but not their effort. Some of the newer math books by inovative professor are much better. Our parents paying $200 for the package of student manual and the text. They did not put too much thoughts into the cd tutoring. For precal book, go with James Steward, precal latest edition 4th, new version will come out Nov 05, ISBN 0534434215, better cd inactive prgram, good study guide.Amazon basically needs to review this and they have to change the CD before they can put that in the market or they should have a more explicit explanation about the book, pros and cons.... suggestion to the readers.

1-0 out of 5 stars A failure by all standards
The product description boasts that "[t]he Barnett, Ziegler, Byleen College Algebra/Precalculus series is designed to be user friendly and to maximize student comprehension." It should have been sent back to the editors before publication, because _Precalculus_ is anything but.
