A great book if used wisely
The previous reviewer gave this book one star, and I can see how one could have a dismal experience with it, much like one could have a horrible time backpacking through a remote wilderness area without the proper skills or guidance.On the other hand, I have taught multi-variable calculus to advanced high-school students from this book many times, and the students all loved it.(I know this from their anonymous course-evaluations.)I used the book Div, Grad, Curl and All That along with this book, as a supplemental text.The two books complemented each other nicely, one taking a more "mathy" point of view, and the other more "physicsy."The previous reviewer may not realize that there are actually oodles of worked out examples; they're all in the back of the book, instead of incorporated into the text.I like this, because it doesn't interfere with the flow of the reading.(My students think this book is a fairly straightforward read.)What I especially like about this book is its emphasis on potential theory; it makes it a deeper book than most other multivariable texts on the market.

If the book is yellow, or Serge Lang is the author, AVOID
Instead of wasting money on a useless calculus book written by Serge Lang, I would strongly recommend a Calculus book by Howard Anton or James Stewart.Every Serge Lang book I have read lacked examples, or if there were examples, they would be too general and not helpful in learning the material you need to know.His books seem to be more based on theories which to me are not helpful for one to learn calculus.Aside from the way it is written, compared to most other calculus books, it is too small.I also have taken a course in Linear Algebra, and his book was too small and was very hard to learn from.Most other calculus textbooks are 800-1200 pages, while his book does not come close, so there are obviously many concepts and exercises lacking. When one has trouble in a course, their text is supposed to be helpful and used as a resource, and Lang's books are anything but helpful.The only thing this book will be good for is the fireplace when I am done with it. ... DFT for Physicists Also!
From a physicist's point of view this book is very clear at explaining Density Functional Theory (DFT). The authors use many chemical examples, but still can be applied to physics. Many physics books on DFT assume the reader knows most of the material so skips many important details that can leave the reader confused. Surprisingly, these chemists spend entire chapters on just about every piece of DFT. They even give many examples, using the Hydrogen molecule as an example quite a few times.
DFT for chemists!
Computational and Theoretical chemists concerned with the applications of canonical quantum chemistry (molecular orbital) methods to chemically interesting problems know too well how (computationally) demanding is going beyond the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation by employing the so called post-HF methods. Hence, very often they must resort on using Density Functional Theory (DFT). Here, however, they need to confront themselves with the terminology invented by their physics collegues: Kohn-Sham orbitals, Fermi hole, local and non-local spin-density functionals, generalized gradient approximation, pseudopotentials, and so forth. Any terminology is associated to a certain model of thought, which requires lot of efforts to be fully comprehended.Read more

A great way to begin learning Complex Analysis
This book, like each lecture by Narasimhan that I have had the pleasure to hear, exhibits masterful understanding and exposition of the material.His proofs are extremely elegant, and it is always clear where he is going with the material.His writing flows very smoothly, and the addition of exercises to this edition is very helpful in the process of learning to prove things in the various areas covered in the chapter.He also does a great job of allowing one to make the connections between complex analysis and other fields of mathematics, and the notes at the end of each chapter offer interesting insight into the material such as various mathematicians involved in developing the topics and other areas of interest relative to the particular chapter.It is rare that an elementary book on complex analysis goes into further topics like several complex variables and complex manifolds, so if you are interested in learning complex analysis and preparing to extend to further related topics, this is the book for you. ... Near Perfect
This book is excellent. The material is presented clearly and concisely. It makes the subject matter accessible and interesting. I used it as the text for a one-semester graduate subject. I completed all of the exercises, so it is well-paced for this kind of study. I started with only an introductory knowledge of group theory, so it is self-contained. The only drawback is that there are no solutions to any of the exercises. If it had this, it would be a perfect bok.

This book has 4 chapters.Chapter1 is about general theory of representations of finite group.Chapter2 is about representation of symmetric groups.chapter3 and 4 are about combinatorial topics and symmetric functions. Though I haven't read all of the book,I highlyrecommand this book because this book shows us introductive part ofrepresentation theory with easy words.I think it is worth to read for allwho are to begin the study of representation theory.

Much better than Royden!
It drove me up the wall, in my first course on measure and integration, that integration was first done for positive functions, then for real functions by writing them as a difference of positive functions, then complex functions in terms of real and imaginary parts.Why couldn't you just integrate real-valued functions
Overall, A Good Book
I've read several analysis books and this is one of the better ones that I have read.It covers a variety of interesting and useful topics and the exposition is clear. It's presentation is a bit more abstract than some others starting with some functional-analytic concepts before doing integration in that framework. However, if you want to study stochastic analysis, getting in this frame of mind will definitely help your understanding of stochastic integration. For a truly thorough understaning of the subject, I recommend purchasing this book as well as the somewhat easier "Lebesgue Integration on Euclidean Space" by Frank Jones - the two together cost about the same as Royden, Rudin, or the terrible book by Aliprantis. ... A Classic with outdated language
This book goes with the series of books written by this author:" Theory of Functions". Together with the other parts it gives a good introduction to the theory of complex functional analysis.Although the language is in places outdated, the mathematics covered is solid and necessary. It is a starting point in study for subjects like chaos and fractals as well. One of the best points is that is a cheap Dover book!
