5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a gem of a book.
This elegant little book covers the elements of a senior or 1st year graduate course on complex analysis, although a really good mathematics program like at Berkeley may look upon it as providing some material for a junior course in advanced calculus. It is not a new book, i.e. it predates the space age and computers, but the material is timeless and fundamental. Highly recommended for those who want some exposure to a first-class style in mathematics.

4-0 out of 5 stars a short review of the book theory of functions by Knopp
Despite not being a very recent book, a graduate student of mathematics who has to prepare complex analysis as a general topic for his qualifying examinations may find that this text covers all the essential material inthe subject. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Arrogant presentation of the subject
While at times the logic of this book is very clear, I would not say this is a good book.I would not recommend it for self study, and I think it would be a terrible choice of a textbook at any level. It might be useful for someone who already knows the material and wants a concise review of it, but I do not think it would make a useful reference either. The philosophy of the author is downright offensive.
3-0 out of 5 stars good, but a lot of gaps in the proofs
This book contains some interesting topics on abstract real analysis. However, most of the proofs in this book contain gaps that are left as an exercise for the reader. This can become quit frustrating reading the book. OK, OK, I agree that you can only learn mathematics by doing excersises, but I would like that the author had provided the full theory and then constructed additional excersises that are applications or extensions to the basic theory.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing! Great naive book
This is one of the most popular book on introdutory set theory that has been around for decades. Famous book! I was surprised to come across a problem book that is to company this Naive guy which is by Sigler. Very good readind indeed!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-intimidating introduction to set theory
I find set theory to be the most intimidating subject in math.It seems so removed, but underpins every assumption I make in mathematics. Many other set theory books are dense and not very clear, but Halmos clearly expounds set theory.
5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book. I'd recommend it to anyone...
This is one of the most beautiful books I've seen on Set Theory. Equally wonderful is the fact it is called "Naive Set Theory" - completely out of reason. The discussion is informal, and this is the only real naive part. It grounds itself rigoursly into Axiomatic Set Theory. In comparision to much other formal texts on the same subject, this is a paradise Halmos has created for the student of advanced mathematics. I'd recommend it to anyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The place to find it!
This is *the book* on noncommutative geometry. Alain Connes created the main parts of the theory, and paved the way for 4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful subject
Even though detailed proofs are omitted for most of the major results, the book is an excellent overview of a beautiful subject that the author has made substantial contributions to. The subject of noncommutative geometry has recently made its way into theoretical physics, and so a perusal of this book would be of interest to individuals working in string theory or quantum field theory.3-0 out of 5 stars Does not stand on its own
I must depart a bit from the previous breathless outpourings about this book. The fact is, it is a whirlwind TOUR (or travellog) of noncommutative geometry, not anything like a handbook of it, or even an atlas of detailed maps of it. I say this because theorems are asserted but almost never proved, no 'problems' are worked, and it is my experience and universally that of all mathematicians/physicists I know, no matter how gifted, that one cannot really understand the subject matter without doing problems! The previous reviewer does hint: "even if you do not know the subject matter" - aye, there's the rub! I appreciate the author's gifts, and I can compass his vision of how useful his approach might be, but between rather trivial points in quantum mechanics to very abstruse theorems in abstract harmonic analysis there is no bridge provided, and the original literature, either by Connes or his predecessor Dixmier, is practically all in French. If you already know this stuff, it might be useful to have all the relevant topics gathered together in one place, but if you don't already know it, you are going to be disappointed. Customers should be aware of this fact before they shell out the bucks. A much better book covering similar ground, but at a more directly physical and more elementary level, is Souriau's: "Structure of Dynamical Systems. A Symplectic View of Physics" Although that work again doesn't have worked exercises. I wonder, is it just the STYLE in French literature nowadays to DISCOURSE about mathematics, instead of DEMONSTRATING it? Rather like a self-fulfillment of the Derrida-Lacan-Latour-deconstructionist position about scientific communities and their provenance, I'd say. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More "Dirty" Math, compliments of Chu et alii.
While I'm positive that this book will serve engineers well, I cannot recommend it to practitioners of pure mathematics, videlicit those who are not comfortable with the bloodied abortion that is mathematics to the engineer. It blows my mind that we ever got a man on the moon! A good example can be found in the first line of page 7. omega^l=omega^(l+(2*n+1)). Keep in mind that n is an element of the set of positive integers, their claim not mine. Now, if you solve for n you'll find that this equation can only be satisfied for n=-1/2, clearly not an element of Z+! Perhaps rational numbers are included in the set of "integers for engineers." Enigmatic despite the absurdity. And yet they seem to indicate that it holds for all n in the aforementioned set! I pray that I've missed something and that someone will embarrass me by pointing out my mistake because as irate as I am right now, blood will likely shoot out of my nose in the next 5 minutes and they'll find my dead in my office at day's end.

4-0 out of 5 stars Varied, specific, and practical.
If you need this book, you already know it. You barely remember what the Fourier transform does, let alone how it works, and you need to implement it from scratch. This book is for you.
