5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid and illuminating algebra text.
This text, which is intended to supplement a high school algebra course, is a concise and remarkably clear treatment of algebra that delves into topics not covered in the standard high school curriculum. The numerous exercises are well-chosen and often quite challenging.

1-0 out of 5 stars I agree
This math book is repetitive and redundant. They give you a vague lesson and then forty exact questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars This math book.
It is really horrible. Almost everyday in my math class me or my class finds something mathmatically wrong. Definitions are very very unclear. For Example It says the beging point for a ray is an endpoint. That can be confusing to someone unfamilar to rays. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good self-study book
first off, i'm not rebecca stack, but we use the same account. i am self-studying at home using this book. addison wesley were completely and utterly unhelpful when i asked for assistance when i first purchased the book and solutions manual. as for the book itself, i'm very happy with my purchase, although if you have no normal class/teacher resources, i would say it's essential to buy the solutions manual.
2-0 out of 5 stars THis is a misleading title
THis text is the annotated instructors edition, which is great. (Unless of course you are trying to learn)
1-0 out of 5 stars Review from a college student
I really did not like this book. There is not enough examples to go along with the problems that you have to do. Most everyone in my class had the same complaint. The workbook was not required, but I don't think you coulddo the work without it. I wish the college would get a different book. I amalso sick of Marvin Bittinger thinking everyone is interested in workingout because he is. Get a clue Marvin! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I m a good student.
Let me first tell you that I got an A in Intermediate Algebra and another A in trigonometry. This textbook is ridicuosly riddled and puzzled,I read the example, and tried to follow the hard complicated question in the example. And I can tell you from heart, it is hard.I m sure the other precalculus textbooks aren't like this.Because I did some problem in the Sullivan precalculus textbook, which was easy and fun to do!I don't care if this publisher or author makes the material hard.I just hope it teaches me step by step with easy sentence that anybody can understand.Good thing that I have the student manual, or else I don't know where I'll be. Please, as an A student, I advice you professors or student to not use this textbook.Thank you.

1-0 out of 5 stars IF LESS THAN 1 STAR WAS AN OPTION, I WOULD HAVE USED IT!
Having been a home economics major in High School 27 years ago, the last thing I needed in my struggle with college was assistance from Ms Kaseberg! This book is needlessly confusing, unorganized, and a poor showing for MsKasegerg's 30 years of experience. The chapters deal with various topics, but the exercises at the end of each chapter seem to have nothing to dowith the material covered. The book's goal of teaching problem solvingskills has failed miserably. The student is left with a different set ofproblems than were discussed in the chapter and with no clue as to where tostart in solving them. Problem solving skills may have been overlooked orminimized in mathematics education thus far, but this book does not addressthe tools needed to solve problems--it simply leaves the reader lost in analgebraic vacuum without a compass. To make matters worse, after using thisbook as a trial for Algebra II (which was a dismal failure), the Mathcommittee at my university decided to inflict equal torture on Algebra Istudents the very next semester. Publication of this book is bad enough, but it is a sad state of affairs when such a product is actually adopted asa teaching tool. I was in grammer school during the 'New Math' fiasco ofthe late 60's, and I view this approach with similar contempt. Mymathematical and problem solving abilities seemed useless when trying tomake sense of this text book. Publications like this will succeed only inmaking those of us who love working with numbers begin to hate it instead. In short, this text book is a rip off--don't buy it OR take a course thatuses it.Have mercy on us Ms Kaseberg; your 'Just-In-Time Approach' willbe the death of mathematics!

This is by far the worst Algebra text book that I have ever seen. The text is very unclear and the author seems to be very unknowledgeable in her field. There are no explanations to how she came up with the answers thatshe got and that makes me question if they are correct. There are noinstructions available, even to the instructors. This book is a waste ofnot only money, but time also and I am ashamed that the math department atTMCC in Reno actually approved it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a gem of mathematical literature
I knew I was going to at least smile when I read this book because of the fact that Gallian uses Beatles' song lyrics to open some of his chapters. But, I was concerned about the mathematical content. Those fears were put to rest basically the minute I turned the first page.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Abstract Text
This is possibly the most addictive Abstract Algebra book ever. Filled with a wonderful selection of problems, Gallian discusses many aspects of groups and rings in a way that is enjoyable to study. The love of mathematics that is shown in this book is reflected by how Gallian eloquently weaves principles of group and ring theory with beautifully selected INTRUIGING problems. I enjoyed this book more than any other math text I have had.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the WORST textbooks I ever used
This book sucks at explaining, half the examples in this book just refer you to other examples/exercises that you have to complete yourself. HOW DOES THIS HELP IF YOU HAVE TO DO THE PROBLEM YOURSELF??!? Half the practice problems are theoretical questions that do not help you in understanding the concept whatsoever. The only thing it does is confuse and frustrate you more. Whoever uses this textbook to teach is obviously incompetent and/or has not looked it over at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars A math book
This isn't the easiest linear text I've scene. This also isn't the hardest. The book has a ton of applications, which is good if you're an applied math, engineering, or science major. If your interests are in pure math the applications are still a nice little side note. The book's explanations are explained as clearly as possible without giving up any rigor. At first I didn't like the book, but after looking at several other linear textbooks I realized that these authors did a good job of explaining a difficult topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best math book I've ever had
This book is a fabulous resource... explains things in as clear a way as Linear Algebra can be.If you want deeper understanding, many concepts are described in more depth, and most proofs are given in detail. It's notfilled with cartoons and useless pictures like some textbooks, but clear, concise explanations of what turns out to be an interesting and fairlysimple area of mathematics. ... Editorial Review

When Andrew Wiles of Princeton University announced a solution of Fermat's last theorem in 1993, it electrified the world of mathematics. After a flaw was discovered in the proof, Wiles had to work for another year--he had already labored in solitude for seven years--to establish that he had solved the 350-year-old problem. Simon Singh's book is a lively, comprehensible explanation of Wiles's work and of the star-, trauma-, and wacko-studded history of Fermat's last theorem. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful, light, easy to read history of number theory
Haven't finished this book yet, but so far it's been great.Good, from a layman's perspective, history of number theory beginning just after the dinosaur's roamed the earth and continuing to the modern day with the focus being on Fermat, the enigma, and his Last Theorem.Well worth the read for anyone interested in the "magic" of numbers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad at math? This book won't help
Bought this book thinking that it might be the key to opening my brain to math. I'm bad at math. So I've been reading every subject surrounding it hoping to grasp an understanding of what it is and maybe have that "eureka" moment. But it didn't happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for studying for COMPASS math placement test
Although this would also make a nice supplement for college students taking Precalculus, it really shines as a test preparation manual for students preparing to take the COMPASS math placement test that is required in many junior colleges. It starts with very basic material on the sets of numbers used in algebra, axioms for the real number systems, and precedence of operators and then moves on to cover everything that you should have seen in two years of high school algebra, trigonometry, and analytical geometry. Plus it even has a few chapters at the end on solving systems of linear equations and even some material on partial fraction expansion.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the pre-calculus student
I teach lots of math classes, and one of the things my students are always hungry for is more worked out examples. You will find tons of sample problems with detailed solutions in this easy to read Schaum's outline. As always, please try to work out the problems yourselves first, BEFORE peeking at the answers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good encyclopedia of Algebra
This is the book that I read in the University for the most part of my Algebra courses, and I own it. It's a very good book that has the most important topics in Algebra (Groups, Rings, Fields, Linear Algebra over Modules) and some other topics such as Category Theory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Winking
Concise, clear and traditionally presented main ideas in abstract algebra (if you want something more modern in algebra field I would suggest Beta Algebra by Algirdas Javtokas - this book is a bomb). Maybe you will not find here long explanations and step-by-step proofs' schemas but if I need a quick reference I look just here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Deceptively Wonderful
OK here's the truth:This book is an awful text when accompanied by not so great prof is teaching from it (e.g. one who delivers nothing but the text). BUT... once you begin to understand enough to know that the "trivial" "exercise" and "left to the reader" proofs are quite straightforward, the book is probably the best reference in Algebra you can hope for. ... This is a decent Algebra II book. The examples are comprehensive and detailed, but sometimes I couldn't follow with the examples. The easy, medium, and hard problems are all excellent. I would recommend this book to future algebra students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb text
As a teacher of mathematics I have used a number of different algebra texts and evaluated many others. After an extensive search for a text that would meet the needs of students preparing for college-level mathematics, I decided that this book had no equal. The exposition is both clear and rigorous, and the problems are of real mathematical depth without being too difficult for most students. One of the best aspects of the book is the extensive drill on algebra skills included in every section. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars first edition
I have a copy of the first edition which covers Maple V release 2. While good the 2cd edition andthe latter releases of Maple5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for Maple
I use this book as a daily reference for calculations in Maple and it is very very useful. It is very detailed where there are examples for every function almost that you can think of. We all know that there is a help within the program, which is quite useful for the introduction to Maple. However, this book enables you to raise your calculations to a higher level.I have searched for a good reference book for Maple for a while and I saw this one in library where after a week of using it I decided to buy one, a nd certainly it has not let me down yet. I do a lot of calculations in Maple and I am sure that this will be very useful for anyone who is in natrual sciences especially mathematics. All general and well known topics are full explained, such as integration, differentiation, limits, differential equations, abstract algebra techniques... and many more. The best thing about this book is the fact that it is explained in a great detail and there are examples for every Maple function, which makes it much easier to understand and actually apply.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, ...but...
