Does not deformation retract onto Munkres et al.
This is a wonderfully intellectual, semi-historical approach to classical topology.
An introduction well worth reading
Ideas from topology are now manifested everywhere in physics, engineering, computer graphics, and many, many other applications. Consequently, a thorough understanding of topology has become necessary for those who are involved in these applications. This book gives an introduction to "classical" topology that emphasizes the geometric intuition behind the subject, and is thus very suitable for those who need such an understanding. That is not to say that aspiring mathematicians will not gain from the reading of the book. It still maintains a standard of rigor that graduate students in mathematics need to advance in more in-depth courses in topology. The author does not hesitate to use diagrams in the book, which makes it an even better one for those interested in applications. Most of the results he discusses were known in the late 1800's and early 1900's, but they are still important today, especially in physics. An accessible introduction to low-dimensional topology.
This book treats (geometric) topology of dimensions two and three together with necessary machinery of group theory. The account is accessible if you have the basic knowledge of general topology and algebra. It well illustrates the inherent difficulties in low-dimensional topology. He can do better.
This is not a bad book. The contents are comprehensive. The theorems are well proved. Graphs are used appropriatly to clarify the concept. But it has several shortcomings. One is the line space is too small, too many words are clustered together. Another is sometimes the proofs are too short. Some explanation should be given on certain points because those points are not so obvious and should not be taken for granted. Frankly, I love group theory, but after reading this book for 20 pages, I felt very tired, both because of the bad format and hard thinking. Hamermesh's book will give you a more enjoyable reading.

A dense, but excellent, text
I cannot recommend this text highly enough to anyone who is working with Grobner bases, especially in computational commutative algebra. Toric ideals, the state polytope, several algorithms for computing Grobner bases -- Sturmfels brings all this together, as well as showing how it can all be applied to problems such as that of integer programming.Read more

Outstanding Title
I guess that, besides the classic references from Pazy and Jerome Goldstein, this title outstands in its category. I�ve heard several words of criticism over Pazy�s work due to the lack of applications and several laments over the fact that Goldstein�s book is out of print. This book introduces the semigroup theory like no other: it doesn�t forget the historic and philosophical aspect of subject and it�s full filled with applications and deep beauty. Congrats to the authors and also to the customers that decide to buy this title, may it be PDE or Dinamic Systems, you�ll be home free...

Engel et al.'s One Parameter Semigroups Book
Semigroups and Clifford algebras have become two of the main trends in mathematics and mathematical physics in the last 5 years.A researcher in either area cannot afford to be without major books and journal articles inthese areas, and Engel et al.'s is the best that I have seen of recentsemigroup books.Their book is a Graduate Text, but it actually presentsmany open questions and research ideas, as is usual for Springer andSpringer-Verlag publications (and also Kluwer-Plenum and CambridgeUniversity Press).Semigroups were familiar to those of us in probabilityfor many years because of their Markov chain/process relationships, but theastonishing fact is that Engel et al. show that non-Markov applications andnon-Hilbert space (in fact, general Banach space) applications and theoremsabound.For those of us who are not too fond of Markov processes (likeme), and who are also not too fond of Hilbert spaces (the usual space ofQuantum Mechanics which went sour and had to be repaired by A. Bohm andstill seems in bad need of repair), this is really good news.Anotherfascinating trend is in the direction of Positive Semigroups, which ties inwith ordering results and inequalities (see my review of Clarke et al.). Positive semigroups have applications to transport and delay (differential)equations and semigroups have applications to control theory which meanswhat it sounds like: physics-engineering control of satellites, rockets,robots, and God knows what else.I repeat my usual caution: if yourbackground is mathematically deficient in these areas, hire a reputableconsultant or tutor to translate the book into plain English more or less. Decent survey on "quantum mathematics"
This book has four articles on mathematics in quantum field theory. Some of it is well known and "classical", particularly the article by Bryant on symplectic geometry (however, Bryan does discuss the modernmodern developments by Gromov in the last section). The article by Rabinattempts to do the impossible: try to teach mathematicians the physicsbehind quantum field theory via path integrals. The article by Alvarez onindex theorems summarizes nicely the connections between supersymmetry andindex theory. The last article by Quinn on topological field theory iswritten for the mathematician in mind. It is fascinating mathematics andgives the reader the impression that research in topological field theorywill no doubt continue to grow in importance. Lie algebra demystified
A practical introduction to an esoteric topic which frightens many physics students.
An excellent practical guide
This short book covers an important aspect that has been neglected by most textbooks on Lie algebras written for physicists, namely providing a comprehensible introduction for undergraduates based on detailed examples, computations and precise motivations, without having to develop the formal theory. This is not a textbook on Lie algebras in the usual sense, but a practical guide whose intention is to provide a solid comprehension of the main facts on (finite dimensional) Lie algebras used in physics. This justifies the choice of the objects analyzed, the compact real form su(N) of the Lie algebras sl(N,C), which constitute an essential tool in the study of the interacting boson model and nuclear rotational states. The topics covered by this book are quite modest (there are no general proofs and no development of classical problems like the classification of simple Lie algebras), and focuses on a detailed comment on the properties of simple algebras using mainly three Lie algebras, su(2),su(3) and su(4), before ennouncing the general case in the last chapter. However, this should not be understated, specially because the book explains carefully the usual notations (which change in the literature from author to author) and tries to clarify the reasons that justify the study of the formal theory. Hard-core Group Theory
Forget about that pansy abstract axiom approach. This is the WWF of group theory. Weyl will take anyone to the mat with this book. It is packed with detail and demonstrations.He follows the vector space/matrix representation approach common to digital systems, physics and chemistry rather than axiomatic, generators/permutations approach more common in Abstract Algebra courses. This is the lineage that develops matrix transforms as groups starting from "the full group of all non-singular linear transformations and .. the orthogonal groups" (p. vii). The latter chapters cover characters and invariants. Galois and field theory have been vanquished. Chapter 2, "Remembrance of things past" is very entertaining. My favorite quote, "Here there is only one man to mention - Hilbert. His papers (1890/92) mark a turning point in the history of invariants theory. He solves the main problems and thus almost kills the whole subject." It's funny because it's true.This is almost a botanical treatise in which the matrix groups are studied as specimens in the jungle -- "...after all each group stands in its own right and does not deserve to be looked upon merely as a subgroup of...Her All-embracing Majesty GL(n)." (p 136). Historic references throughout provide motivation and entertainment. You couldn't possibly be disappointed with this book.

Although this is a dated work, lacking some of the more modern language, it is still worth owning and reading.It is, after all, a designated "classic."And the material presented has been incorporatedwithin so many aspects of physics that one simply cannot avoid needing abook such as this.There are better books on the subject, for bothmathematicians and physicists, but this book still proves its worth. ...
