Most accessible of the useful physics texts
My background is that of theoretically inclined inorganic chemist and this review is intended for those with interests in inorganic and physical chemistry or solid-state chemistry/physics.
A must for every grad student
I began reading this book having just finished a course on Abstract Algebra through my school's math department, and the semester before I took a graduate course on the exact subject.

one the the most important work in quantum mechanics
It's a very important book, written by the father of group theory application in physics (with Wigner and Pauli), and one of the best mathematician of 20th century, Hermann Weyl. Everyone who wants study a deeper view of quantum mechanics, in his intrinsic mathematical formulation, should read this work. After a firt brief introduction to quantum theory, he passes to explain the theory of rapresentation of groups, and its physical application, like the rotation group, or Lorentz group, and finally the theory of simmetry. It's a fundamental book for a good understandig of the importance of simmetries in modern physics. Without any doubt one the the most important work in quantum mechanics.

Still a good book
Written in the early years of the quantum theory, the author of this book foresaw the importance of considering symmetry in physics, the use of which now pervades most of theoretical high energy physics. Indeed, with the advent of gauge theories, and their experimental validation, it is readily apparent that symmetry principles are here to stay, and are just not accidental curiosities. A reader of the book can still gain a lot from the perusal of this book, in spite of its date of publication and its somewhat antiquated notation. Older books also have the advantage of discussing the material more in-depth, and do not hesitate to use hand-waving geometrical pictures when appropriate. This approach results in greater insight into the subject, and when coupled with eventual mathematical rigor gives it a solid foundation. One example where the discussion is superior to modern texts is in the author's discussion of group characters and their application to irreducible representations and spectra in atomic systems. A Classic Text
I had been studying group theory on my own independently using this book for the last seven months when I misplaced it while at work - along with the notebook which I had painstakingly and carefully created from my hundreds of hours of study in this book. To say the least, I've been absolutely devastated at losing my notes; but the Schaum Outline I can easily replace.
Comprehensive but Dated
This is a reprint of a book that's been around since the sixties. It needs an update, especially the exercises, which are somewhat disorganized. The authors, like many mathematicians, have difficulty with the spoken language and do not adequately motivate the material, on an historical or intellectual basis. That said, this is still one of the best introductions to the subject available, at less than 20% the going cost of a textbook.

Outdated notation and very dull
I know maths books aren't meant to be fun to read, but this book is *extremely* boring. It's got, in my opinion, too much content, and its content could've been explained more efficiently.Read more

A good book
This is a nice book that introduce the reader in a nicely way to Galois and Field theory. This book not only concentrate in the classic topics but also covers so much about areas not covered in other books. For example the topics of normality and separibility and pure separability are very well covered and the concepts of infinite extensions; among many others. This books also contains a nice feature and is tons of examples and exercises. Definitely a very good book. I took the course of Galois Theory with this text and I learned a lot.

Important Text on CGT
Handbook of Computational Group Theory by Derek F. Holt (Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications: Chapman & Hall/CRC) is about computational group theory, which we shall frequently abbreviate to CGT. Very detailed with lots of motivating examples
The theory of representations of semisimple Lie groups is very complete from a mathematical perspective and is of enormous importance in high energy physics. This book gives a comprehensive overview of this theory, and deals with both the noncompact and compact cases. My interest was with the noncompact case and in topics such as the Langland's classification, and so I read only chapters 5 - 10. Therefore my review will be confined to these chapters. Throughout the book, G denotes the group in question and K denotes the elements of G fixed under the Cartan involution. The author endeavors, and this is reflected in the title of the book, to employ many examples to illustrate the main results. This makes the book considerably more easy to follow than others that are written in the "Bourbaki" style. Read more

Great Book.
This is a great text on matroid theory. This book is far easier to read than other matroid book I have seen (Welsh). Second edition is a significant update and cheaper to boot. (being a paperback)

Clear theory, many examples
Group theory is no easy subject to master, and there are so many books out there filled with page after page of abstract mathematics.In an age when protein crystallography and its application to rational drug design are becoming so important to medicine, this book allows you to learn about the great power of group theoretic methods by giving you plenty of examples to teach you with.

this small book on symmetry and group theory is easy to understand and packed with examples. it is a small book (only about 300 pages) but everything in it is relevant and to the point. the writing is easy to grasp and the back includes character tables for all the common symmetry groups. buy it!

Coherent and Useful
This book does a good job at introducing some of the most interesting combinatorial problems in monomial resolutions.Although their chapter on toric varieties is somewhat weak, most of the other chapters (square-free monomial ideals, Borel-fixed ideals, staircases associated to monomial ideals in three variables, etc.) are very well written with challenging and revealing exercises at the end. ... It's crap compared to Davison (which is out of print)
Okay so Davisons out of print but it's so much better (and called Group Theory For Chemists)!This book is a bit badly laid out, doesn't explain things very well and is pretty much useless unless you already have at least a simple grasp of Group Theory.I don't know what awful libraries you lot in Cleveland have but this is certainly not a particularly good book.
