Pretty good reference and quick read
The text does a good job of covering the subject material.It is not so advanced as to be difficult to master symmetry, matrices, and applications to vibrational spectra.The book is designed as a programme. The reader follows along and is interrupted to test his/her ability.After successful mastering of topics, the reader goes on, but if the reader does not answer the practice questions well enough, there is a guide to do more review.This is a great intro text for undergraduates, or as a reference for graduate students studying in the Inorganic field.
Great for beginners
If you don't have the math background it often takes to penetrate Cotton, this book could be the answer.For learning the quick and dirty basics of the use of group theory for molecules, this is the book.The only problemsare its sparseness and the high price for a 156 page book.Excellent forself-teaching, though.

Exam tomorrow, and still in confusion with group theory...?
Cotton's(or Bishop's or like that...) book on group theory is too wonderful for me to grade. But, you may agree with me, in that it really takes times! You must read those books to understand the internal structureof group theory, but if you have exam tomorrow, Vincent's will be anemergency measure. Just follow him about 5 hours. Then you can solve somecrucial spectroscopy problems, make MO's, and so third. But don't forget tocheck the books of details. This book is just for an emergency measure. first book devoted to orthogonal arrays
This book is a great collaboration. Hedayat is a statistician who has been a major developer of orthogonal arrays for statistical experimental designs, Stufken was a student of Hedayat who has worked with him on this research. Sloane comes from the mathematics of codign theory where he has developed orthogonal arrays to produce error correcting codes. Excellent..except for.....
The three authors have done a superb job of conveying their message. However, I feel that the book is a little over-drawn and long. It is still an excellent example of the supreme books that Springer releases.Congratulations to this BRILLIANT trio!

Excellent introduction to abstract algebra through group theory
This was the textbook for my first course in abstract algebra and the first "yellow book" that I read.I found it an excellent book: rather than starting with axioms and dryly deriving everything, it gets one to contemplate the meaning and motivation behind the axioms.This book will encourage you to play around with mathematics on paper and in your mind, helping you to get a concrete feel for a subject that many people view as painfully abstract.
Excellent introduction to group theory
Please note that the other reviews here are obviously for some other book.This is not an advanced text on bifurcations and stability.It is an introductory book on group theory.I have been using this book for self study.It is well suited to this purpose.The book uses symmetry to unify and motivate the study of groups. The discussion of the symmetry groups of Platonic solids is both enjoyable in itself and useful for visualizing groups. The chapters are very short.The exercises are well suited to gaining insight into the material.

The book consists solely of exercises and hints for every exercise, which he curiously calls "answers".This book is perfect if you are looking to review geometrically-tinged algebraic structures like matrixgroups, symmetry groups, and wallpaper groups.There is also some basicpure algebra in here.I don't think this book would work all that well fora student new to algebra, although someone with some backgroud in algebracan definitely get something out of the geometric chapters. ... For the Physicist - Not the Mathematician
Lounesto's book is replete with geometric and physical applications. The treatment is informal and non-rigorous and appears to have been designed with developing intuition in the reader. The text starts slowly working through many examples of particular Clifford algebras of interest and their relevence to physical problems. Towards the end Lounesto investigates general Clifford algebras and their associated spin groups as well as some specialized topics. Lounesto's Clifford Algebras and Spinors
Clifford algebras make geometry and its applications to advanced physics incredibly simple, and this book is one of the best that I have read on this topic and on spinors.Readers outside physics should also study this book, if necessary with the help of a consultant or tutor to translate intomore or less ordinary English, because most fields of science or industryare in need of tremendous simplification.Lounesto's approach isalgebraic, as is Okubo's (see my review of his book) and Chisholm's(likewise), and Cambridge University Press as usual is at the head of thefield in publishing the deepest and yet most simple topics.Spinors (theword comes from spin plus the ending -ors) describe spin in quantum theory,and Lounesto has the most detailed division of the types of spinors that Ihave seen in a book together with their physical applications.Weyl andMajorana spinors describe the neutrino (of the weak force, although theformer only describe massless neutrinos), flagpole spinors appear todescribe the strong nuclear force/interaction and appear to be related toquark confinement, Dirac spinors describe the electron (Weyl and Majoranaspinors, unlike Dirac spinors, are singular with a light-likepole/current).Penrose flags (see my reviews of Roger Penrose's books) arerelated to Weyl and Majorana spinors.Penrose has an interesting theory oftwistors which is well reviewed in some of the popular science books.

A very clear and comprehensive introduction to a somewhat esoteric subject; essential for anyone in theoretical physics (especially field theory).It is possible to teach yourself the subject from this bookalone--a rare feature in mathematics texts.Bravo! ... Read more

The first thing to say: you need time to read this book. It is written ina "prosa"-style but nevertheless it covers a lot of topics. Good Reference
This text serves as a good reference, however, it is not necessarily well-suited for self-learning. The exercise sets need some revamping.

Sweet and Concise
I used this book as my course text book in my Galois Theory course in my undergraduate.It is pretty self-contained, so even if you forget some of Group and Fields Theory, you will still find it very readable.The little book guides to the Great Theorem by Galois (f is solvable by radical if and only if Gal(f/Q) is solvable) by breaking it into many nice sections.A drawback of this book is that some proofs at the end are omitted because they are put as execrises!Also, bear in mind that this book focus in Q and R (rational and real numbers) field only.In any case, I still recommend this book because it is sweet and concise, for which I can read it like a novel!

Classical "Artin's" Galois theory
From the definition of a conmutative ring to the fundamental theorem to solvability of equations byradicals in 65 pages, 80 theorems and 106 exercises. The exposition, wich follows the now classical tradition of "Artin's" Galois theory, is quite efficient, packing much material in a limited number of pages. The greatest asset of this book is its nice selection of topics, focusing on the fundamental theorem of Galois theory and its application to solbability of equations by radicals, but pausing to make excursions to finite fields or to work outexplicitly some iluminating examples. The style is no-nonsense, crisp but nop hurried. The final 40 pages consist of appendices discussing group theory, ruler an compass constructions and old-fashioned Galois theory. This latter appendix deserves special mention, since it is not customary for a textbook of this size and scope to include such a detailed sketch of the historical motivations behind the theory it describes. One can only agree with the author when he wonders how such thoughts occurred to Galois in the late 1820's, and be grateful to him for providing his reader with material for an answer. ... Read more
