An excellent supplement or a wonderful continuation
I used this book as a 2nd year grad student with a little more than a year of graduate algebra. It worked very well as tool to solidifying my knowledge of group theory. i think it would also work as a great book to read while taking a first year algebra course. The idea of the book is to teach theory grounded in examples. In particular, Alperin uses the matrix groups as the main example for the entire book. The writing is very user friendly and the proofs are adequate. It covers basic group theory concepts, local structure (p-groups, Sylow, solvability), Parabolic Subgroups of Gl(n,F) and at the end goes into modules and representation theory. ... Read more

Outstanding! One of my favourites!
This book gives a very concrete intro to Galois theory & field theory & would be an excellent supplement to an advanced course on algebra. It has some group theory in it but its emphasis is on field theory because its focus is ONLY on Galois theory & its applications, so you'll have to find another book on general abstract algebra. But for Galois theory this text really helped me out with its fairly concrete treatment. Look at this to get a more tangible version of more abstract stuff. Each chapter has a bibiolgraphy at the end of it & each one is a goldmine for interesting stuff about abstract algebra, history, numbers, etc.(...) One could also think of this book as a jumping-off point to all kinds of other stuff it scratches the surface of.

good introduction into dealing with nonlinear pde's
Like the introduction says: Symmetry methods based on Lie group theory is the most important method for solving nonlinear problems aside from numerical computations. Have you always wondered why you need a computer to solve something 'simple' like the nonlinear Burgers equation? Well, this book shows you how far you can go using pen and paper. It is a very good book, but I highly recommend studying it together with an Abstract Algebra book.

A decent introductory text on symmetries for fluid physicists and engineers
The book does a very good job of relating symmetry methods to fluid mechanics applications using physical interpretations of the results.
Readable and Useful
This book is useful as both a primer on the subject and a research reference. It succeeds on both counts where a book by G. Baumann with a similar title fails.Read more

Ron Christensen is an excellent writer who has written many intermediate to advanced level texts on linear models, multivariate analysis, time series and categorical data analysis.They all provide a good mix of theory and applications and cover topics often neglected in the standard text books including Bayesian approaches to inference.This book is no exception.Read more

Why bother fixing typos?
I was thinking of buying this book, but when I read that it is riddled with typos, I declined.Perhaps publishers will get the message that not doing proper editing results in lost sales.

Riddled with errors, but ---
I have never seen so many typos, omissions, and errors in a published book.Many of the examples are poorly introduced, theorems are mentioned that don't exist in the book, etc.Other than Rubik's cube, most of the other puzzles are presented in a completely incomprehensible manner.It's very annoying, in a book that's otherwise just what I want.It does give a good quick and dirty intro to the group theory needed, however.

In depth group theory via games and puzzles
I am old enough to remember the original appearance of the Rubik's cube puzzle. I examined it a few times while in a store, but never put any effort into it. Later, I looked at some of the literature that explained how "easy" it was to solve the puzzle. The solution involves the use of some advanced topics in group theory, so it is a puzzle with a mathematical twist. However, that is not the only application of group theory, there are many ways in which it can be used. Joyner shows us many of them, and provides the foundation before he tackles the problems.
