Nice place to start...
It's a very clear book with virtually no typos/mistakes and lots of nice exercises (if you are willing to do them - highly recommended). Really an introductory text, so you might need to consult the more advanced books of Wegge-Olsen, Blackadar after this one for more information on the subject. Gets your feet wet in D.E.
The book has it's short comings; my main complaint being structure. The author jumps around quite a bit going back and forth from D.E. to linear algebra. However, i used this to kinda get an overview of D.E. before i took the class and it helped me tremendously. I went into the course with a fair understanding of definitions, tehcnique and theorem. I would not use this book to teach yourself and i do not consider this better than a university text but as a way to familiarize yourself with mathematics, it's a good start. I agree with the reviewer who said this can start you off and a good proffessor can do the rest.

a great introduction to matrices, differential equations, and the linear algebra underlying both subjects
I used this textbook for a sophomore-level math course called "Linear Methods" on linear algebra and differential equations.I think this book is great for a course like that -- a course that stressed the connection between differential equations and linear operators/linear algebra.I really liked the book.
A book I don't recommend
The book is structured very poorly.It starts an introduction of differential equations (chapter 1 and 2), jumps to linear algebra (chapter 3, 4, 5 and 6), and then comes back to differential equations (chapter 7 and after).In general, it is a very disorganized book to study.In addition, there are typos and wrong answers in several places.If you are going to study differential equations or linear algebra, I would recommend to get a different book.Finally, quality of the book is poor, too.By the time, I studied chapter 8, the book fell apart into two pieces. ... One of the most valuable expositions in Lie-theory
This book is intended as a short concise overview of the theory of complex semisimple Lie algebras. Inspite of its small volume, this text is far from being of easy lecture, since it assumes the knowledge of some basic facts concerning Lie algebras, as well as associative algebras. Indeed the first chapters are a r�sum�, without proofs, of some basic theorems of Lie algebras. A great source of intuition.
Functional analysis and operator theory is a deep and useful subject, and is still an active area of research. Quantum theory, learning theory, and probability and statistics, are just a few of the areas that make heavy use of it, and it would be difficult to formulate ideas in these areas concisely if it were not for the results that are codified in functional analysis and operator theory. Still a great reference work
Maybe it is not suitable as an introductory book on functional analysis. Great Book for Yesteryear!
There are people who love James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. This is the "Casablanca" - a great B/W movie for Functional Analysis. But, we are in a different age of big screen movie full of digital effects andsound effects. You are charged for a full price to watch an old masterpiece. My rating for this book is based on today's standard. Although, itis not fair for the book, but it is an unfortunate must for the reader! Ofcourse, there are old books who stood firm in modern standard, e.g.Kolmogorov and Fermin's Introductory Real Analysis and Rudin's FunctionalAnalysis.
