5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Good for beginners of linear algebra like myself. Good book. good logical sequence. would be better if proofs are shown more rigourously.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book with the right Teacher
This book is quite good as an introduction to linear algebra with a nice mix of proofs and computational exercise. It has two main fault both of which can be corrected by a good teacher. The first is the horrible graphics (everything is in shades of gray and blue) that make it very hard to use them to supplement the text. The second is that in some sections they use non-standard notation for certain items and without a teacher to explain this you will not be able to understand what they are trying to say.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used this in my undergrad course as a math major at UT Dallas. I really enjoyed it; the book has sections on applications in just about every chapter, and there are lots of computational exercises as well. In addition to answers to odd-numbered exercises, each chapter has a "self-test" with all the answers provided at the back of the book. It's a bit chatty, but that befits an undergrad text.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the best introduction to linear algebra
I've tried to learn on my own from several other linear algebra books (Anton, Lay, McMahon), but like many college-level math textbooks, the authors too often emphasize elegance at the cost of clarity. This frequently leaves me scratching my head, asking "How did he get here from there"?Bronson is the only linear algebra text I've seen that SKIPS NO STEPS.I wish more mathematicians understood how critical to learning explanation and illustration are, in contrast to adding Yet Another Proof.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good and easy introduction
As I started my studies at Uni and we got this horrible Algebra teacher I was looking for some good book to help me pass this course. This book met all my requirements. This book starts with a very easy example of a matrixand builds up from there with easy to follow steps. Even though the book isvery easy to read and explains Algebra very comprehensively it still meetsthe universitiy-level. Everything stated is formally proved or left as anexercise. An excellent book for a guy that thought he'd never understandlinear algebra. This book proved me wrong. It may lack some topics, butthe ones in the book surely can't be found elsewehre explained as good asin there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for self-tutoring
I took an undergraduate course in linear algebra which assigned this textbook and basically, it made the lectures dispensable, it was that good.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the right crowd...
This text was developed by the author during his time on the mathematics faculty at Harvard for specific use in the second semester of a two semester, undergraduate sequence on multivariable calculus and linear algebra. It is intended for physics, chemistry and strongly quantitative economics majors. As such, in terms of complexity it is more par with a collegiate abstract algebra text, with a clear focus however on linear algebra. The "applications" portion of the title is a bit of a misnomer, as examples only occur in the problems and almost never in the examples (which are designed instead to show the theoretical precepts and continuity underlying the field). In general, this text is above the intellectual capabilities of but the most dedicated users of applied mathematics, and those especially is the fields of economics and finance as generally taught at the undergraduate level would best look elsewhere. Most prominently, the text has almost no redundant examples, which makes it a enjoyably lucid read for those who grasp concepts quickly on the first go, but a dead end for those who come up short. I would not as professor think of assigning this book to non-Ivy caliber students outside of pure math; even Harvard students seemed to struggle with it at times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Otto The King
The author is also known as Otto The King within our university. This is an excellent book with deep insight of the material, many very good examples, and a very good author who presents the material at his best.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but something is better
Conway is an excellent mathematician and an extremely lucid author. No criticism should be given to any of his writings. In the case of quaternions (and octonians), a much better, more complete, and more powerful view is achieved by seeing them in the larger setting of geometric algebra. The geometric algebra gives direct access to all the results and all the geometry of these algebras, and does so in an intuitive and useful way.I suggest that the new book by Chris Doran and Anthony Lasenby called "Geometric Algebra for Physicists" is a better place, generally, to get acquainted with these issues deeply. It isn't a criticism of Conway. It's just an advantage of seeing things in the right context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Examining 3- and 4-dimensional Euclidean spaces
On Quaternions And Octonions: Their Geometry, Arithmetic, And Symmetry is a collaboratively presented treatise by John H. Conway and Derek A. Smith on the geometry of the quaternion and octonion algebras. Examining 3- and 4-dimensional Euclidean spaces, enumerating the corresponding finite group of symmetries, analyzing the arithmetics of quaternions and octonions and much more, this impressive presentation sheds new light on the geometry of complex numbers and is a scholarly addition to Advanced Mathematics reference collections and reading lists.

5-0 out of 5 stars A model of exposition
John Conway's books are always well written, and this could serve as a model for other mathematics authors.I don't need to know that much about quaternions and octonions, but I found myself working through most of the book and the beautiful mathematics it covers. The only thing that disappoints is the dreadful cover and the difficulty getting hold of a copy in a bookstore. But then I guess Amazon.com exists to help people get their hands on stuff they might never see in a bookstore. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, modern introduction to C*-algebras
The use of C*-algebras in operator theory is known as a "soft" technique, in contrast to the "hard" techniques that use deep results from analysis. The blending of algebra, topology, measure theory, and analysis to study operators has resulting in breathtaking advances, and this trend continues. Applications to physics, especially quantum field theory, has also resulted in fruitful collaborations between mathematicians and physicists. The author has given an introduction to C*-algebras in this book from the purely mathematical standpoint, but those interested in applications can gain much from the reading of this book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book
I find it ironic that my two favourite Linear Algebra texts are this book and the Axler, for they are exact opposites: Axler shuns determinants, and Shilov starts with them and builds much of his theory off them. However, there is no book I have found that has such a deep and clear exposition of determinants. The first chapter alone makes this book worth buying.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book has several good points.First, it is extremely affordable. Second, it covers all the typical topics in a typical undergraduate linear algebra course within the first 4 chapters or so. This makes it a great reference. I bought it as a supplement to my old linear algebra textbook, and it is great for that purpose. In addition, it continues on to more advanced topics which may not be covered at the undergraduate level; for example, the heavy emphasis on determinants and the more rigorous treatment of spaces, leading to affine spaces. I also have Shilov's book on real analysis, so I like the concise yet thorough manner of the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books
I am a graduate student and wanted to learn linear algebra for fun. This book provided me with one of the best coverage of the subject. It is supposed to be meant for upper level undergraduate courses or first year graduate studies .It is meant primarily for mathmatics graduates it starts right from basics and the proofs given are most succint and to the point. People who want to intutively learn the subject I would refer then to the book linear algebra and its applications.

4-0 out of 5 stars Old, but still helpful
This is a clear, useable introduction to basic techniques for numerical optimization. It addresses the classic kinds of optimization targets: differentiable (mostly) and unimodal (mostly), with or without constraints of various kinds. 3-0 out of 5 stars Was good in its day
After some initial use, this book sat unused in my library for many years. We were reacquainted recently when I needed help in solving a nonlinear optimization problem with some tricky aspects. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Could be little worse
This textbook has a number of problems:
1-0 out of 5 stars I'm certainly glad I'll never have to take another calc class after dealing with this crap
This is by far the absolute worst math book I have ever had the misfortune of using. The discussions teach everything using either completely abstract formulae or by using the absolute easiest example of that problem type. Then you get to the questions, which expect you to have mastered the concept of the preceding 10 pgs or so and be able to extrapolate these concepts to other topics (which the book offers no explanation of how to do). Overall, I would say you're better off learning this material from your cat's litter box, as it will probably make more sense. Also, i'm sure your cat put more effort into its litter box than the author's of this text put into writing this text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Trash
This book's attempts to teach anything do anything but teach. Each section has about ten pages of explanation followed by a bunch of problems. Unfortunately the explanations do anything but explain to people that are trying to learn math. If you're a math wiz you might be able to decrypt what they're talking about, but as a student I had no idea. In the examples the authors often use explanations such as "it is obvious that..." and "we remember from..." The lack of explanation (mainly laziness on the authors' part) makes it very hard to follow what they're talking about, and the problems afterwards often expect the reader to know things that weren't discussed or appeared as a one-sentence blurp in the margin. So unless you're a massochist or already know this stuff like the back of your hand and need a reference guide, spend your money someplace else. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent (hardcover) textbook
I agree with A. Noushin's July 26, 2004 review on Steven M Kay's 'Modern Spectral Estimation: Theory and Application' textbook. This textbook helped some of us at Lockeheed Missiles & Space Co. solve some spectral questions that others had worked on and not answered.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice book
My comments here are for the hard cover version (I do not have the paper back version). This is one of the best books on the subject of spectral estimation that I have seen. The book is easy to follow yet comprehensive and detailed. You could read sections as they are without getting confused. There are a lot of interesting problems at the end of each chapter. It is a good book for self study as well as a reference. The book is divided into two sections:Basic Methods, Advanced Concepts. The first section covers the followings:Introduction, Review of matrix theory, Review of probability, Classical methods (periodogram, windowing etc.), Parametric Modeling, Auto-regressive Estimation, MA Methods, Minimum Variance Estimation. Part two contains: Sinusoidal Parameter Estimation (MLE, Eigen-analysis, Cramer-Rao bounds, MUSIC etc.), Multi-channel Spectral Estimation, Two Dimensional Spectral Estimation, and finally one chapter on applications such as Bandwidth Compression, Beam-forming/Direction of Arrival and more.

4-0 out of 5 stars concise and elegant, and also covers Banach spaces
I would compare this book with Paul Halmos' classic "Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces". Both books cover much in common, both in material and style. Each is slender and gracefully written. Lax takes us through many of the simple results and methods of linear algebra. Unlike Halmos, this book also covers computational aspects. A nod to the ever increasing prevalence of computers. The theorems are proven in a rigorous fashion. But with some attention, you should be able to follow the logic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Graduate Presentation of Linear Algebra
I used to hate this book but it was due to inadequate presentation at the time I was first introduced to it.Over time it has become my favorite Linear Algebra text.Use Axler's "Linear Algebra Done Right" then move up to this text.Being able to do linear algebra at this level is crucial to anyone doing advanced mathematics, science, and engineering.Be sure to have it handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first math book without picturse and examples
I used Lax in my honor linear algebra class as a college freshman. With not much previous experience in abstract math, this book could be a bit frustrating. However, if you really strive to understand what each sentence really means, it's not all that difficult. This is a very concise book and at times I spent hours reading one page. My class didn't end up covering the whole book, but I finished it on my own the summer following my freshman year. Now I feel very confident about linear algebra and it led to my later more in-depth study in algebra. ... Read more
