3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but very dated
The Editorial Review on Amazon's site says:"While the original version was more linear algebra oriented, the revision attempts to emphasize tools from other areas, such as approximation theory and conformal mapping theory, to access newer results of interest". These remarks give an incorrect flavor for the book. Of approximately 350 references, less than a dozen are post 1990. The vast majority are from 1950 to 1965. The author repeatedly refers to "more recent" results with references to the early 1960's. So much for "newer results". The author's remarks in the preface to the new edition are much more informative:"...just what could easily be added [to the new edition]. For example, even a modest treatment of finite elements...was questionable. This was also the case for multigrid methods, Krylov subspace methods, preconditioning methods, and incomplete factorization methods. In the end, only a few items were added... These items include ovals of Cassini, a semi-iterative analysis of SOR methods,.... and matrix rational approximations to exp(-z)."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars graduate level book on categorical data
Ron Christensen is an excellent writer who has written many intermediate to advanced level texts on linear models, multivariate analysis, time series and categorical data analysis. They all provide a good mix of theory and applications and cover topics often neglected in the standard text books including Bayesian approaches to inference. This book is no exception.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For the 1968 version. The 1972 version? The new version?
I've seen the editions of 1968 and 1972, and itlooks to me as if the book has gotten worse with time.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent service and unbatable price
the book got to me almost on time and was in very good condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes it takes a second read, or third, or fourth....
I liked this book because it is written at a slightly more sophisticatedlevel than most lower division math books.Admittedly, it is difficult tounderstand some of the proofs and examples on the first read.It justtakes some time, after a second or third read, before the text begins tomake sense. Then you'll realize the examples are presented quite well andyou have everything you need to solve the problem sets. And you knowyou've learned the material well if you understand the text and you can dothe problems, which are oriented more to make you think than compute. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
If this book is disappointing why did I rate it 5 stars? Well, it is because having studied the first edition I was expecting more updates in the second. It really is an excellent book, but I wanted the author to discuss the Brown-Douglas-Fillmore K-theory of operator algebras and give an in-depth discussion of the invariant subspace conjecture. I used this book for a two semester course in functional analysis and operator theory while a sophomore in undergraduate and found it very challenging. The presentation of the topics is very quick and the problems are pretty difficult, but you take away an appreciation of this important area of mathematics. Indeed, the theory of Hp-spaces and Toeplitz operators, which are covered in the last two chapters, have many applications in engineering and physics. The author does give an update on the problems he marked with two stars (indicating an unsolved problem) in the first edition, and references that discuss their solution. When studying the book, I am always amazed about how rich linear transformations become when they operate on infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces; but also how much the finite-dimensional results have generalizations in infinite dimensions. The theory of C* and W*-algebras is discussed in the book, and the presentation should be helpful to physicists who use these techniques, even though the presentation is much more general than one would find in physical theories. The explanation of the W*-algebra as arising from the enlargement of the functional calculus to an algebra of functions generated by characteristic functions; where the Gelfand transform is taken on a larger commutative self-adjoint subalgebra of the space of linear operators is one that is easier to remember and seems more natural than merely giving a set of axioms that a W*-algebra is supposed to satisfy. A very abstract discussion of index theory is given, and one that is pretty distant from the theory of integral equations, but with some work one can see the connection to these equations. Who knows, maybe a third edition with more of the author's insights? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A textbook for that geometry course you wish existed
This nice book contains many things that every mathematics student should know (but don't). Chapters 1-2 are on Euclid. The main ideas are picked out very nicely, in welcome contrast to the usual "let ABCD..."-style books. Chapters 3-4 on linear algebra in geometry will probably be skimmed by most readers. This is perhaps just as well, since it consists of little more than the pearls from the usual linear algebra course and since the presentation feels somewhat forced (e.g., things like the inner product are cheerfully defined out of thin air) compared to how naturally the rest of the book flows. Chapters 5-6 on projective geometry are more interesting. Perspective in art sets the stage, but we quickly move to purer things. Stillwell is very fond of the mysterious and fascinating connection with hypercomplex number systems one obtains by building up an arithmetic from within a projective plane. Then in chapter 7 we learn that transformation groups are a clarifying and unifying idea, and we play around with them a bit, somewhat aimlessly it seems, until we finally get to hyperbolic geometry in chapter 8. This chapter crowns the whole book beautifully, showing how projective geometry explodes into hyperbolic geometry through transformation-group thinking. It ends with an excellent short survey of the history of non-Euclidean geometry. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy With a Bottle of Glue...
Or you may lose a few pages.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, rigorous and fun
I used this book as part of a Linear Algebra 2 course and found it to be clear and enjoyable to learn from. The chapter on the history of the major pioneers was particularly delightful. This book contains more than most Linear Algebra 2 courses cover (at least more than we did) so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as THE book to buy to learn Linear Algebra. As its name indicates, it is more of an enrichment book in many ways.I think that this book, like many put out by Springer, helps flesh out an otherwise daunting subject, showing part of its mathematical beauty that is visible on the undergraduate level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eavesdropping On A Master
A droll explication of techniques that can be applied to understand someof the most important engineering problems: those dealing with vibrations, buckling, and earthquake resistance. While containing substantial theory, this is an applied mathematics text that reads as if you are eavesdroppingon the author talking out loud to himself. What sets it off from the crowdof math books are the inside references to Parlett's friends in thebusiness, and the dry wit. It contains NO CODE, yet discusses algorithms indetail, describing where they are good, and where they flop. The readermust pay attention, however, and work through some of the exercises with acalculator (a spreadsheet is handier, in my view). If you are looking foreigenvalues, this text is a necessary part of your toolkit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An illuminated, highly concentrated review of Linear Algebra
From a physics undergrad: This is one of those wonderful, highly concentrated books that deliver extensive Wisdom in only a few pages of hardcore, to-the-point Theory, without simplifying. If you enjoy being told things in a frank manner and without excessive preambles, even if this means slower reading, this book is for you. The theory is built from scratch, but a lack of general abstract mathematical culture might prove problematic. Not recommended for the unprepared or those greedily seeking immediate applications. ...
