3-0 out of 5 stars It Depends...
This logic textbook covers sentential and predicate logic. There are chapters on semantics, syntax, derivations, truth-trees and metatheory. Each chapter also contains many examples and exercises.
5-0 out of 5 stars Logic courses text book
This book was used as a college leveltext for a Philosophy course in introductory Logicc. As a guide to SL,I found it easy to understand and informative when in conjunction with a structured lecture.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh. It's Okay, I guess.
This one's okay. A bit dry and tedious, but okay. There are better logic textbooks out there, though. If you're a philosophy major, I'd recommend either Harry Gensler's or Irving Copi's Introduction to Logic. They're much more interesting than this one. If you're a comp-sci major, you'd be better served by books specifically devoted to digital logic. For philosophy majors who want to go beyond basic logic, I highly recommend books by Graham Priest, particularly his Intro to Non-Classical Logic. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and comprehensive
The author tried to cover everything a set theorist should master plus a representative selection of topics of current interest. That makes for a lot of ground to cover, but Jech did a great job. The writing is very well organized and clear. Every short chapter has many exercises, often with hints. There are extensive sections on applications of forcing. The indexes are really good.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good but unreadable book
It's really a good book for researchers in set theory. But it is NOT an introduction for students who want to know what is set theory. You will feel you are so stupid if you read this book without any set theoretical background. I recommand Kunnen's book for those people who are interested in set theory but have no any (or only a little) set theory knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars This edition has been completely revised!
Just wanted to point out that all the reviews here dated before Feb 2003 are referring to older editions. The new one has been totally revised (no laundry list of corrections at the end) and also expanded -- lots of material from the last 25 years of set theory research is now included. Most notable among these is material on proper forcing and pcf theory.(There is even a section on my research interest, mutually stationary sets, and this is a notion which was just published for the first time 2 years ago!)The book is still just as informative and readable as the previous editions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Tool (Your Mind)
To solve the riddle beguiling the world
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good introductory/review logic book
I was took a few logic courses back when completing my bachelors. After several years as with everything else oyur memory becomes stale. I've decided to go to law school so I needed a logic review before taking the LSAT. This book is perfect for that. Clear concise explanations and examples, written very well and doesn't leave you asking questions about the ideas the author is trying to convey to you. I defiitely recomeend this book for the avid knowledge junky or for academic purposes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value, well written, a bit old fashioned.
The good news. This book is excellent value for the money, and is the best written Schaum's Outline I have ever read. It is certainly not excessively mathematical, compared to nearly everything that passes for logic nowadays. Schaum's outlines are seldom written by first-raters in their respective fields. This is a clear exception; Varzi is a first rate contemporary philosopher. I would even call this book an excellent example of modern scientific communication.

This book is an excellent supplement for classroom lecture.I often used it to clarify methodology used in my graduate level macroeconomics course. The presentation of the maximum principle and Hamiltonians in dynamic optimization was most helpful. In about 10 pages he clarified what 6 hours of reviewing lecture notes could not.

4-0 out of 5 stars A near Psychotic Break-7 on the Ritcher Scale
Written by two psychotic professors who are experts in the field. The book, though written for mature readers , is lucid and leads the reader scenically to thre climax on Process Algebras. The book is a bit disjointed though. In Theoretical Computer Science, where the more general a "general emotional disturbance" is the better, I suggest that the authors should have had worsened their illness somwhat (I am being funny now!) by utilizing Category Theory, Domain Equations, and Universal Algebra as a unifying framework for the topics in the rest of the book. Also, they should have ncluded more on Category Theory and in particular, Domain Equations in this book. They should had shown the interrelationships between the three frameworks as well: the book would have been lengthened somewhat but more complete.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Care is needed
I would hesistate to give anything less than a 5 star review to anything on fuzzy set theory in the wide sense.Make no mistake reading this book is worth your time.Yet, some significant problems do exist with this text.
4-0 out of 5 stars First bible of fuzzy systems theory since Dubois and Prade.
A comprehensive and authoritative presentation of developments in themathematics of fuzzy systems theory over the past thiry years. While thebasic mathematics are presented, this book is not for the casual reader, but for those seriously interested in fuzzy systems theory. If the readerdoes not have a good mathematical background, he or she will find this booktough going. Coverage of theoretical fuzzy concepts is quite complete, including theory of fuzzy sets, fuzzy arithmetic, fuzzy relations, possiblity theory, fuzzy logic and uncertainty-based information. 5-0 out of 5 stars Robust treatment of fuzzy logic has interdisciplinary appeal
George and Bo have been as thorough and lucid in preparing this book aswell as George explicated systems thinking in the very first book of his Iread, "An Approach to General Systems Theory." Here, as there, without compromising mathematical rigor, the goal of this book is toelaborate its subject matter in such a robust manner that it hasmultidisciplinary appeal. As always, the reader is given a flexible, almostinteractive, access to the what, why and how of fuzzy thinking. Despite theexception taken by Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh, the "founder of fuzzylogic," the percipient reader will appreciate the authors' unusualassociation of "fuzzy measure," that is, the degree of beliefthat a particular element belongs to a crisp set, (not the degree ofmembership in the set), with Possibility Theory so as to clarify thedifferences between fuzzy set theory and probability theory. Theillustrative applications are not only case studies that one may pick andchoose from for examination and emulation but also constituteincontrovertible evidence of the successful and promising realization ofthe fuzzy paradigm. As a former professor of engineering at RutgersUniversity, I found the 79-page Instructor's manual helpful for self- orextended study and Iassume it would be valuable for teaching. I have readmany books on fuzzy logic and I judge this to be the most balanced to date,(early 1998), - not filled with C++ code or trying to sell a softwarepackage nor is it theoretically daunting - it is simply an invitingdemonstration of how fuzzy logic clears up foggy modeling and analysis. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!
This book is like no other. Its short and to the point which means that the busy math major can actually sit down and read it! We all know how hard it is to try and read a wordy book on how to write proofs while at the same time trying to study abstract algebra! We dont need a full 100 pages on informal logic! Antonella Cupillari seems to understand this and sums up everything we need to know concerning logic in under 12 pages! Excellent book! Well worth the $32.95!

5-0 out of 5 stars I own a previous edition
I own the second edition of this book and find it incredibly well done. I am a math major, and this book was recommended to me by a caring professor to help aid my transition between computational mathematics and the more abstract area of Mathematical Proofs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reclaiming the Greek Heritage: A Modern Mathematical Philosophy
Rudy Rucker deals with the concept of Infinity in regard to our mental conceptions and the structure of reality. The question is whether or not the concept of Infinity makes sense, and then the relation of finite thought and human consciousness relates to the possibility of infinites in the structure of reality.
5-0 out of 5 stars This review is not true.
This book is spooky!I love it!The infinite is such a fascinating topic.I contemplate it on a daily basis and wrestle with some of its concepts almost constantly. This book is a must read for anyone who has ever wanted to know more on this subject.Robot conciousness is an incredible topic and really makes one think about what conciousness really means. Some of the concepts are difficult to relate to, but give it time and open your mind.If I could, I would give this book infinity - 1 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars At the intersection of parallel lines...

5-0 out of 5 stars You will learn so much with this book!
I am just completing Dr. Rood's course at Washburn Univ. and from the student's perspective, I think his book is terrific.I found it to be both challenging and interesting, and I would say it's been an excellent tool for me in beginning to learn what programming is all about and how programs are structured.I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about using it to teach a course, because I think most students find it a good and helpful book with good practice problems.I would also recommend it to anyone who's just interested in picking up a book about programming and trying to learn how things work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, with caveats
First, I would say that overall this is a good book. Just that - not excellent, not inspiring, not... current. The techniques and principles mentioned in this book are applicable only if you really plan to throw out some of the cruft (with the predominance of OO languages such as Java, C++, Perl, Python and others, do we really need flowcharts?). Good logic and good structure are always required and this book gives you that - just remember there are other (better?) ways of doing design (UML anyone?). Also keep in mind that the way Warnier Orr is presented in this book deviates from the "standard" - so don't be surprised if you have some relearning to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for the purpose and audience
Professor Rood's book is about the best textbook in this subject that I have encountered in 20 years of teaching the material. It is intended for a CIS/MIS/IT or similar audience. It will provide an excellent introductionof a multitude of problem analysis methods and algorithm design languages(flowcharts, Nassi-Schneiderman, Warnier-Orr). It fosters structuredprogramming and top down design as natural processes. Read more

I found this book to be long and drawn out. The chapters are very wordy and dont really get to the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars The (Required) Undergraduate Handbook for Beginning Mathematics
"Proofs and Fundamentals" by Ethan Bloch is undoubtly one of the few books I'd say would be required when beginning (and a light refrence as you progress) the undergraduate mathematics curriculum in most US schools.
5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent introduction to formal mathematics
This book is an excellent and thorough intorduction to the world of formal mathematics. Typically, a new mathematics student finds himself or herself picking up random mathematical concepts and techniques of proof along the way, without ever having the chance to sit down and go through the fundamentals of formal mathematics and proof. This book covers a little of everything, and has a thorough introduction to sets, functions, inverses, equivalence and order relations. There are also sections on introductory number theory, algebra, combinatorics, logic, and much more. It provides an excellent overview for the student who will be using these tools on a daily basis, for the layman who is interested in finding out what mathematics is really about, or for the seasoned mathematician who needs a good general reference book. There are also extensive and thorough sections on the construction and writing of mathematical proofs -- somthing on which many new and not-so-new mathematicians could use some improvement. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Clear explanations and fresh approach that enables real understanding
This is a lovely book, which gives a fresh and invigorating account of current developments in computability theory. Personally, I don't feel it can helpfully be compared to Cutland's computability text, as though that book supplies enough background for some undergraduate introductory courses in computability theory, it doesn't reach beyond that level. Cooper sensibly avoids using the same approach as Cutland for the area of over-lap -there would be little point duplicating an existing, in-print work- instead, he has in the early chapters given an intuitive approach to those topics which helps the reader understand what is going on under the morass of symbols which so often obscure rather than promote comprehension. Nor can much useful comparison be drawn with Hartley Roger's classic text, as the main bulk of Cooper's book is concerned with material which post-dates Hartley Rogers.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended as a starting point
The book is divided into roughly three parts: an introduction to computability theory, followed by a more advanced introduction to the theory of degrees of unsolvability and decidable theories, and finally some newer material on computation and structure.

1-0 out of 5 stars The book is simply not useful
If your purpose is to learn something. This book is really bad at teaching you.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall.
A well-written book that teaches you how to think about complexity theory instead of just a flat summary of results. Something like Lewis and Papadimitriou's _Elements of the Theory of Computation_ would be more than enough preparation for this (note that the style of these books is quite different- this one is more informal and descriptive). Covers all the material you need in a first text. Has a good little introduction to mathematical logic in it, including a nice succinct version of Godels Incompleteness Theorem.Lots of interesting exercises.

This book covers alot of ground in discussing topics in probability without becoming too technical. The book is succinct, easy to read, and seems that is was meant to pique one's curiosity in probabilitiesteaching some interesting principles and ideas. This tiny book leaves one with the impression it was knocked off over a weekend. One feels like asking "where's the beef?".
