5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text
I've found this book to provide a clear and enjoyable introduction to formal logic.Mark Sainsbury's Logical Forms, which deals with philosophical aspects of logic, complements it nicely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Logics - Nolt
The best book I've seen on formal logic(s) in a while; it covers almost every type of logic the advanced undergrad might want: modal, intuitionist, etc., in addition to propositional & predicate, of course. I would read this along with Philosophy of Logics (Haack); apart from the fact that since Haack is a semantic or philosophical look at the formal systems of logic, you get a more rounded view on logics, both of them have in common a 'pluralistic' attitude to logic, hence the 'logics' in both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very recommendable
This book is simply great! It covers a lot of stuff in a friendly manner, but without being shallow. Its semantic approach to logic and its clear treatment of metatheory are, in my view, the main assets of this book. Buy it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should appeal to both mathematicians and poets
Maor has written a book for both mathematicians and poets. Since he is a mathematician himself there is, to be sure, plenty of math in Maor's book. But the book should also appeal to the aesthetic side of many readers (me included) by exploring human perspectives of infinity, such as how we try to relate to the concept at a personal level, and how different people have tried to capture the notion in art and prose.
4-0 out of 5 stars To the limits of infinity
Even as children we have a vague concept of infinity, thinking of it as the largest number; remember the familiar exchange of "I dare you!" "I double-dare!" "I dare you to infinity!""I dare you to infinity plus one!"or some such thing.Even then, we realize to some extent that infinity is not truly the largest number because there is always something bigger.5-0 out of 5 stars The finest generally accessible math book I have seen.
I have read other books by Eli Maor. After "June 8, 2004", I had doubts about this one, but I wanted to clarify some Cantorian issues.Once I started this one, I could not put it down.It also answered my questions.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Old but still the most popular
After four decades, this is still the most popular graduate text on recursion theory. I think the success is due to its stock of valuable material rather than the quality of writing. The style is dense, descriptions are overly brief, and explanations are poorly laid out. Proofs are brief and sketchy. Overall, it is just poor writing. Take a look at Odifreddi to see recursion theory from someone with a talent for readable prose.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece
If there's a better book on recursive function theory, I havent seen it. It's wonderfully well-written, extremely interesting, and good both for learning and quick reference. There are lots of neat exercises- this book will keep you busy for a long time. If you are interested in recursive function theory you must have this book- I dont need to say anything else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good but be aware of omissions
This book is indeed much shorter than Principia, mainly because it is derived for lecture notes for a 1 semester PhD course. It is also a lot clearer than PM. But the notation is largely the same, which makes for hard reading if your are under 50. Quine's proof format doesn't take up much space, but has always eluded me. This book contains the best treatment of truth functional and quantificational logic prior to natural deduction and truth trees.5-0 out of 5 stars In Depth Look at Logic
Try this book when you know a bit about the basics of logic. The descriptions are much more lucid than those in Principia, even if the ideas are less earthshattering for there time.Quine, as he always does, gives amasterful, detailed look at logic. If you are a fan of logic and thefoundations of math, this book is not to be missed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellently organized book.
This book presents various mathematical principles in an organization I have not seen before. It starts with the idea of a transformation, then goes on to relate eigenvalues and eigenvectors to general spectral theory, explain how the need for closed function spaces naturally leads to Lebesgueintegration (I know about Lebesgue integration before but I didn't know whyit was needed), and show how the definition of certain inverse operatorsleads to distribution theory. This is a very natural way of organizingthese principles. While other books, such as Strang's Intro to AppliedMathematics and Rudin's Real & Complex Analysis, provide you with onemathematical "toy" after another (Fourier series, Lebesgueintegration, etc.), Keener's book tells you why you need the toy beforegiving it to you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Am I stupid or this book is too advance???
This book doesn't clearify anything for you. No examples, No further explanation. It only keeps introduce various theories to you. It can compact theories that other books take 2-3 pages to explain it into 5lines! I think you can imagine. Obviously, this book is not suitable to beyour first book (not the second also). Buy it if you are sure that you aresmart enough to understand it! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not much alternative to this
There is a bit of unintended humor in the preface: "This book is essentially self-contained. The only thing it requires is familiarity...with the basics of general topology, measure theory, and functional analysis, as well as the elements of set theory..."
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
A truly outstanding reference for the purely classical aspects of descriptive set theory, it falls under Kelley's label, "What every young set theorist needs to know." It is not an easy book for the beginner as it is very concise and gives little motivation, but for the advanced student it is essential.

You would think that reasoning skills are just common sense, but they are not! This book had lots of information about deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, and logical fallacies, and the practice really helped me apply what I learned. 4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Logic: A Text in Elementary Symbolic Logic
This book is meant for an upper-level (preferably senior) undergraduate introduction to Symbolic Logic class. It is not meant as an introduction to logic class and those that do not have the sufficient background in logic should not be introduced to this text. If so, the student will be utterly disappointed. It is a difficult text to master given the extended detail that the author goes into higher-order logic. The modus ponens, modus tollens, and other should be introduced in a sophomore or junior level class alongside fallacies, truth tables etc. This books basically starts off at truth tables and translations and goes from there. That is why it is important for the student to take an introduction to logic class (freshman level), a modern logic class (sophomore/junior level), or the introduction to logic class and discrete mathematics or any other mathematics class that introduces the student to symbolic logic keeping in mind that the terminology may be somewhat different. The student that has taken all these classes plus a set theory class will have no difficulty with Forbes' Modern Logic textbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not an Introductory Text
As an accompaniment to the program MacLogic for an upper level course I can see where this book would have a place.Unfortunately my introduction to it was tutoring for an introductory class. The material is well written and organized but far too densely written, particularly for students who have never had a logic class before and are coming from questionable mathematics backgrounds. That there is no index of symbols just makes navigating the text that much more difficult.2-0 out of 5 stars Good book but not a teaching text
It is important to be forewarned that this is not a good text for an introductory logic class.I have taught classes using several other texts, and, although they had their flaws, the Forbes' text has flaws that are almost unsurmountable for the typical lower-division college student. The explanations, though creative, are not clear enough, and the flow of topics is out of sorts. For example, the exercises which accompany the sections start out too difficult to be any aid in helping the introductory student grasp the techniques. In short, for upper-division courses or for people who already have a logic background, this is an interesting book and might be worth a look, but it fails miserably as an introductory text. ...
