5-0 out of 5 stars Sure it's good, and a good price by the pund too!
A pretty good overview and a lot of in-depth material on Multivariate data analysis. Not quite a bed time read though.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good for a second stats course & reference
We used this book for our Stats 2 course in grad school, and although our professor was good enough to eclipse Hair, et al. (he had written his own Stats text), I am most pleased at how much mileage I have drawn from Hair, et al. in the years since I took the course. In my subsequent career, reviewers have often sent me back to Hair, et al. when they have questions about something I'm doing with a data analysis, so it has become an invaluable reference for that reason alone.
4-0 out of 5 stars simple but great!!
I used this book as a reference on the topics while I was working on a research project at the university. Because the book does not use complex mathematics to explain the multivariate statistics, it is easy for social sciences students to understand. Each chapter starts with an overview, step-by step procedures and ends with an example from the data set that is used throughout the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The one to have
If you want one book on Categorical Data analysis, this is the one.But there are others that are easier to read, if your math is not great (including the same author's book with an almost identical title)

2-0 out of 5 stars Good reading, but how do I analyze my data?
In the theoretical sense, this book provides a very thorough overview of categorical data analysis. However, this book should not be used as a reference for the scientist needing to do the occasional number crunching of categorical data. The examples are vague and the tests are not well explained. If you want to derive the tests, this book is for you.If you're not a statistician at heart and just want the answer, I suggest looking at Conover's "Practical Nonparametric Statistics" for a good explanation of which tests to use and how to use them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic, made even better
This is a very demanding, thorough, and clear description of just about everything anyone could want to know on the subject. The second edition is considerably more rigorous than the first.Agresti stresses that logistic models are one kind of generalized linear model. This offers solid connections to many other models, but places corresponding demands on the reader. In particular, Chapter 4 is difficult going, but might be skipped or skimmed on first reading.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Elementary and Middle School Teachers
This book gives insights and helpful hints to teachers about math strategies that can be integrated into the math curriculum.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too helpful!
This book is not really helpful for teachers in methods classes. I was not impressed with the lay out, or the accessibility to information. I consider this book a waste of my money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, progressive math for elem. teachers
This book contains multiple solid strategies for teaching mathematic concepts to children in elementary school.I never knew there were so many ways to look at addition and subtraction, but I do know different children will have different perceptive needs. Van de Walle catalogues strategies to help elem math teachers of any level. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Too Bad
I have a basic statistics background before I read this book. For me, the book is useful for my basic quantitative research. Last few chapters apply the statistics rules in earlier chapters to the real business environment, which I think it's really practical and interesting. The most I like in this book is the practice questions at the end of each chapter, which apply to everyone's daily life. However, first four chapters cover too many unnecessary topics.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book requires outside help!
This book tends to jump off topic (most aren't explained well). For example, they talk about one thing but the exercises are a bit different than the chapter's topic. Most of the information isn't fully explained. If you are in a class where the instructor assigns the exercise questions for homework, you are screwed. You may not know what to do unless you seek outside help (study guide, tutor etc.) or read beyond the chapter.

2-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting book... for those who understand statistics
The book has a lot of examples and is a must have for those majoring in Finance. Some Universities use this for Intro to Statistics and this book is very didactic. The way it's written out in a form that takes you a another level of reading which makes you feel you're in a rainbow... a reading rainbow... Anway... The book has answers in the back so it's good enough for whenever the professor assigns Homework. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Helpful
If you are looking for an encyclopedia of all things pre-calculus, then this is your book. Just don't expect it to teach you much if you don't already know the material. There are plenty of practice problems, but the actual "teaching" sections don't really help the average student like me. Some of this is offset by the DVD's included in the course pack, but not enough so to justify the $200.00 the book and course pack cost at the university bookstore. You would probably best be served by using a different book like Precalculus for Dummies or the Complete Idiots Guide to Precalculus.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never read it, but...
I'll admit, I have never looked at this book, but Michael Sullivan's other Trigonometry book is very bad. No specific exampels, vauge explanations. If this book is anything like his old one, dont get it!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
The information listed in the "Product Details" section for this book is very misleading. As noted in the other comments, this book is the paperback Student Solutions Manual. It is NOT a hardcover book and the ISBN number is not ISBN: 0130914657 (as listed in the product detail section). This book may prove to be helpful but it was not the book I thought I ordered. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
I used Giancoli as my primary text in high school, and found it to be a superb text. I think those complaining of a lack of worked problems are missing the entire point of this text and the essence of studying physics. This book is about understanding physics principles and the equations you use to solve physics problems. You will find that with this understanding (certainly provided by this excellent text), the need for mindless ploughing through physics problems is lost. You will be able to solve physics problems on the basis of your conceptual understanding of the problems. So many students rely on rote learning and repetition by doing hundreds of questions. Sure, you might be able to attack similar problems for the next week or so, but as soon as you stop practicing, the skill is lost. True mastery of physics comes from appreciation of principles, not mere recognition of patterns in problems...this text will help you achieve such an appreciation.
4-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good intro book for calculus based physics
I once taught a calculus based physics coursed using this text.I found as good as the other standard texts: Both the book by Serway and the book by Halliday and Resnick. The ideas are presented clearly, without too many words, and the examples are well picked. I suspect, as happened to me, that you will appreciate the calculus better after getting past a calculus based physics course. Despite containing a few errors, a good return on your investment relative to the cost of this text, is the supplementary Schaum's outline: Physics for Engineers and Science. Each chapter of this Schaum's reviews things concisely, and is filled with tons of worked out sample problems. Try hard to work out these problem sets first, before looking at the solutions. Your grades will reflect YOUR efforts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and nice physics book for intro students
I know physics is hard for all of us, but this book is very clear in explaining physics. It does not involve in calculus, so usually it is better for most students who never took physics. So if you did not take physics class before, I highly recommend this book because it does not use pompous or intricate words that most science textbook writers do.Not only is it an easy reading, but also it has awesome questions and problems that make you think and that check whether you know really physics.

2-0 out of 5 stars not realy helpful
It is okay, if your teacher is terrible this will help A LITTLE. Honestly, this book tries so hard to make calculus interesting that it ends up making it worse. The examples are useless. The explanation of limits is so confusion. It barely spent 2 pages on continuity. I don't recommend it, its not "user friendly". I am going to buy another book because this one failed to meet my satisfaction.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nicely done
...but I strongly advise reviewing your trig first. This book has one of the better sections on implicit differentiation and for that alone, it's worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bone up on your algebra/geometry/trig first...
For a geezer like me who's been away from math an infinity+ (pun intended), I'd recommend checking out the prereq Dummies book first. But, once you do, Calculus For Dummies and the accompanying workbook are a fun adventure thanks to the author's merciful and witty style.Just don't leave these two volumes lying on your coffee table unless you wish to impress company with your nerdiness ! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Further adventures with algebra...
This book is currently being used by the community college where I tutor as a book for the internet version of Intermediate Algebra, a course that most of our two-year degree programmes require as part of the mathematics requirement, and one of the most 'popular' courses at the tutor centre.Because this book is used by the internet course, it has to be well crafted to enable students to learn from on their own, and indeed, it seems to pass muster on that account.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars prolific problem sets
In his latest update of this text, Sullivan takes the reader through a high school or undergraduate level course in algebra. Though the title says "College", all of this material is also eminently do-able at the high school level, for advanced students, aspiring to major in maths or science. While at the university level, it appears to be targeting those students not majoring in maths, physical science or engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars You don't need to be afraid of Statistics
This is a very friendly statistics book.It is easy to read and understand. The authors also throw in some humorous comments now and then that is something you wouldn't expect to find in a statistics book and this seemed to help with the reading. Many real world business examples are used in the book. The example problems and the end of section or chapter problems are from different areas of study such as business, political, social sciences, and science. This is great for understanding how to apply statistics in real life.I would have to say that all the topics and formulas are explained very well.In some cases there are more then one way to write a formula and Sanders and Smidt makes a point of giving you both formulas. You can decide which formula works for you.The book comes with a CD loaded with the data files for all the problems so you don't have to spend time keying in data. There are copies of the data files come in a variety of formats such as Minitab, Excel Windows, and Macintosh. For most of the example problems the book takes you through the steps using Minitab Statistical software and the TI-83 graphing calculator. You are not only learning statistics, but you are also learning how to use Minitab and the TI-83 graphing calculator. In this day and age if you are going to do statistics you need to be able to do it with a computer.I wish they would have also included examples using Microsoft Excel, which more people are apt to have then Minitab. Personally I use both Minitab and Excel. I actually enjoyed reading this book and looked forward to studying.Even though my statistics class is over this book will not be collecting dust for a while as I plan on going back through it to reread or finish reading what I missed or skimmed over. There are still a lot of the problems that I want to do to reinforce what I have already learned. This is a great statistics book to keep as a reference. More then once I have found coworkers looking up stuff in my book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's actually worth the huge price tag
I was turned on to Stewart through his excellent multivariable calculus text. Having been so impressed by that book I decided to fork out the bucks for the this text. Yea - I know - the material in this text is a pre-requisite to the other but I own a kazillion mathematics books and at this point in my life, I've been through various levels of Calc so many times that order is irrelevent. Anyway, for me, this book is really worth the huge price tag. I frequently open it up and read it for pleasure. Sick, huh? But it's that good! Stewart is great at chosing examples to work out fully for your eddification. He also is great at selecting interesting and illustrative problems that aren't presumptuous of the student's abilities at clairvoyance (unlike some other textbook authors I could mention). Lastly, the everything about this book reeks of quality: from the mathematical content (btw - it has excellent graphics!) and Stewart's obvious underlying teaching abilities to the physical characteristics of the binding and page materials. The book is a jewell.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Calculus Book
I've learned calculus long time ago, but recently I need it to read a financial book. This book worked for me.I am surprised to know that calculus is easy due to the book's step by step explanation. This book is good not only for readers who learn calculus for the first time but also for poeple who have some experiences.Depneding on your level and purpose, you can read this book like a novel or do all exercises.Only problem I can think of is that this book may not be suitable for people who need to learn pure mathmatics because definitions are not so strict.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and understandable.
At the beginning I was a bit worried about the way the book explains the material. It seemed too simple for a book dealing with more complex subjects in math such as functions, trigonometry and analytic geometry. Then again it could be said that this quality is the one that makes the book such a joy to read.
5-0 out of 5 stars reviews for the 7th edition?
why are the reviews for the 6th and 7th edition of this book the same?is there no difference between editions, such that reviews for the 6th should be kept for the 6th.the 7th edition might have changes that could cause some to review/change a viewpoint about its content.maybe at the core they are the same book/method, but it is overall a different book and the reviews should be kept edition specific.
5-0 out of 5 stars well designed for self study
I taught 2 sections of precalculus with this book last spring. This book is well designed for self study. Examples are keyed to specific exercises so the student is directed to use a concept immediately after seeing it employed in a suitable exercise.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best business statistics book

2-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better
This book is okay, but it could definitely be better. For a basic statistics class, this book contains WAY too much information to digest in a semester of college. No professor I know of has ever gotten past chapter 8.Further, the problems are quite wimpy as far as the amount of thought required for them.Quite wimpy.Could be better. The only good thing is that for doing it on a spreadsheet, the data comes on a CD, so that you don't have to re-type it, thankfully. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasently Surprised
I am a college student and the math book that was at the bookstore was $100.00. I went onto amazon.com and found the same book in new condition (looked like)for $56.00. I was kind of weary about ordering on-line for the first time but was pleasently surprised. This was a great first experience and plan on ording all my books through amazon.com.

"Ideas" is the key here as we have calculators, computers, and what not to do any real number crunching or comparing. This book carries you from zero to the edges of most any mathematical discipline. The information in the margins ties the theories back to reality. At the appropriate locations in the margin are postage stamps from around the works are shown commemorating the individual mathematicians and scientists relating to the subject being studied. There is a section in the book with the answers to all the odd questions. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars New edition for what???
Calculus is an old problem, but new editions of the same material keep coming up. Calculus will not change, the way it is presented and explained can. At least to a certain amount. But just changing the sequence of exercise-numbers for each section, and moving sections from one chapter into another chapter, does not -in my opinion-warrant a new edition.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Intro Calculus Course
This book clearly explains the different mathematical techniques of Calculus and provides great problems for practice. It shows a step-by-step process of how to perform different techniques and explains how and why they work, which is probably the most important facet of actually learning calculus. In other words, it breaks down a daunting subject into something easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for calculus; well-written.
I have been a fan of Roland Larson's math textbooks, as they have always been very clear and the practice problems always make sense. I was recently stuck in some calculus courses which used the calculus textbook by James Stewart, and that book is a nightmare! Fortunately, my multivarible calc prof prefers Larson's book, which is what we use in class. Very good book; I recommend it much over Stewart's. Also, do note that the odd-exercise solutions are posted for free online at Roland Larson's website, which is given to you in the book. ... Read more
