5-0 out of 5 stars I used this book for an online stats with ease.
I did not have the luxary of an instructor guide me through problems and have my questions clarified in class.I took the class online and I had no problem inderstanding how to wrok out the problems. It goes into detail on how to work out problems and gives examples step by step. There are also a lot of practice problems in the text with odd numbers answered for review. The CD in also a great learning advantage with some of the chapters with E-professor.Excellent to walk you through your stats course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Statistics Book
Excellent college book and I intend to keep this in my library for future reference. This book was well done for the beginner and some advance users. This book covers many step-by-step solutions using excel and the "TI83 calculator." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not ideal for planning biomedical studies
I have found it very difficult to identify a good book on study design for the biomedical industry as most are too focused on engineering/manufacturing applications.Though this book does discuss many different study designs and their theoretical underpinnings well, it does not do a very good job of explaining the issues of sample size and power. These issues are critical to designing studies in biologic settings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Long-awaited update to a classic
This is the best applied book in any scientific or mathematical subject that I have ever read. The reviewers who are looking for equations and the typical assumptions-theory-proof presentation just picked up the wrong book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended as a text book
As a text book, this book will drive students crazy. Despite the typos which can be found not occasionally, I found the authors wrote most of the examples using large paragraphs but hard to comprehend.Pretty often the results they generated comes from nowhere. No clear deduction, some times even no equations, just tell you some meanlingless number. The authors must have treated students as experienced as they are, therefore they omit most of the important details for a student to follow. Obviously, by using computer software, they can easily get answers from problems they made without bothering write down how they can get it by pencil and paper.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REFERENCE FOR BEGINNING & ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATES
I have been teaching out of Angel & Porter for the last three years. It has quite a few good examples, though I agree with the first reviewer's comment that it does need more challenging problems.1-0 out of 5 stars Still incompetent after all these editions
A few years ago I wrote a review here on Amazon, of an edition of this text from around 1994. Apparently, only one of eight of those who commented found my review helpful. This new review is an attempt to be more helpful and to address the newer 6th edition.
4-0 out of 5 stars Could use some more problems
This book does the job of teaching some mathematics to those with liberal-arts majors. However, over at Wayne State, we are constantly bemoaning the lack of extra problems for students to practice what theyhave learned (especially in light of the fact that we cover only half ofthe chapters of this book in a single one semester course). This isespecially apparent with the probability and statistics chapters.OverallI can see this text being a commendable effort on the part of Angel andPorter to bring mathematics to those who would normally shun it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Do The Easy Things First!
American middle-school and high-school pupils continually lag their peers in other developed countries - especially in mathematics - despite years of decreasing class size, building ornate new structures, "new" math, etc. However, these efforts are bound to fail if what goes on inside the classrooms is poorly structured.
4-0 out of 5 stars It may not be correct, but...
After reading the book and the previous posters, even if the Japanese mathematics classes were not representative of the education system as a whole, the implications of this study and the ideas that the authors came up with are what we should be focusing on.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for a Education Student
I am in a program to become a High School math teacher. Our professor recommended this book. I found it to be pretty interesting. The authors do a detailed analysis of a video study from the TIMSS study. Their analysis compares how math is taught in the US, Germany and Japan. Their conclusion is that the US approach focuses on teaching terms and procedures where as the other countries emphasize understanding concepts. They go onto to propose a system of "lesson planning" to improve teaching in the US. Lesson planning calls for teachers to work in teams and develop a single lesson plan (maybe one per semester). The process of developing the lesson plan and refining it imparts to the teachers involved a kind of "best practices" that they can then use in their everyday planning. I am not sure if this is practical, but it sure sounds reasonable to me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Used in MBA program - Intro to Stats
I did not have much statistics background while in undergrad or through my job experiences and found this book to be quite easy to understand. The problems at the end of the chapters were quite useful in that they seemed applicable to the real world.I thought the most useful section was on regression so if you are interested in learning about that topic, this textbook is quite useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book with good cases
Very good text book with very useful and practical real cases, which make the boring theory interesting. I think it is very useful for my job and daily life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Effective text for students and anyone wanting to brush up
This is a very readable and useable text for undergraduates, business students, and general readers who want to learn or brush-up on basic statistics. There is a tremendous amount of information in its 1200 pages, but it is well laid out, amply illustrated, with lots of practical work. The answers to the odd numbered questions are provided in the back to aid self-study.There are several appendices that provide important tables and the methods for calculating important statistical formulas. The index is also quite helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars too long
This book REALLY needs an editor. It is just too long. Mr. Diamond goes over the same points over and over in excruciating detail. My solution was just to skip paragraphs detailing exactly how to carbon-date pinecones for the 20th time.
3-0 out of 5 stars questionable from the beginning
I haven't yet finished the book, but have found reason to doubt the Mr. Diamond in the preface and prologue alone. In the preface, Diamond states that the readers are not about to read a "racist treatise" and that the book doesn't "involve human racial differences at all."Skip a few pages to the prologue and Diamond postulates "Why did New Guineans wind up technologically primitive, despite what I believe to be their superior intelligence?"Is New Guinean a race?Maybe, maybe not... but reverse the statement and then see how the critics chime in.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not as compelling as "Collapse" but a good read nontheless.
Diamond presents a look at the evolution of various Cultures throughout the World and how geography has played an important part in their developement. The reason that Eurasia and North Africa evolved more highly developed (technologically anyway) cultures was that there was a wider variety of wild plant and animal species that could be tamed by the humans living in those areas following the Ice Age than there was available to humans in other parts of the world. This enabled people in these areas to develope farming societies (which required more specializations than hunter gatherer societies) more quickly than in other parts of the globe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Was very useful for algebra review
I needed to brush up on my algebra after some years away doing other things, and had three evenings for that. I found this text very helpful (but I had to spend five evenings in the end). First, it emphasizes the operator view of linear algebra, as opposed to the matrix view; second, the solved problems start with several concrete numeric examples and then move on to proving theorems, so you get practice in both; and third, it is reasonably abstract and succint which saves time if you know the subject but need a quick review.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better than my texbooks
I have learned more about Linear Algebra from this single book than all my other assorted (and fairly expensive!) texbooks combined; and, for that matter, more than my college class on the subject too. I'm now studying Differential Geometry and I always have this book nearby (in addition to two other Shaum's Outlines: that of Vector Analysis and Differential Geometry). Every textbook has something to offer - at least I usually give them the benefit of the doubt ;-). But for gaining a "working knowledge" of abstract mathematical concepts, there's nothing so enlightening than studying the details of problem solving performed with delightful clarity by an expert in the field. In this book you can become the apprentice to Seymour Lipschutz as he reveals the mysteries that often form clouds in the minds of students of Linear Algebra.Frequently, when working in this text, I would suddenly understand something that seemed so complex or obscure in my other LA texts. Actually, I could then see what those other texts were attempting to convey but because of their particular styles, they were just a bit "pedagogically challenged" :-)
3-0 out of 5 stars Decided not to use it because of too many typos
Regrettably I can only give a partial review of this book. From some of the other reviews, it looks like this may in fact be a decent text, but the number of errors I encountered in the answers to the first set of problems was so annoying that I decided not to continue using this book.By the third addition I would expect most errors to have been corrected, but that is not the case here. The errors I ran across appear to be mostly typos, and I can understand a book having some typos, but to have so many in the first set of problems was enough to make me look for another text.Another reviewer mentioned that the errors were obvious.True, they were, but it was still annoying and a waste of time to have to deal with. Also, the errors were obvious in the first chapter because it was all review material, but what about later chapters when the material would not be a review? It just wasn't something I was willing to risk.I've given the book a neutral three star rating since I can't thoroughly review it, but I'll let you decide if it's worth it to give the book a chance. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A well defended postion, but perhaps a bit too defensive
I was at one time a research scientist, but not a physicist. I took a year of Quantum Mechanics, but certainly don't regard myself as very knowledgeable in this area or mathematics. Therefore, this review is coming from a space of being an educated layperson with a broad background and open mind. I think this is important to know before you read more of my review.
4-0 out of 5 stars not trivial, not definitive
First some background.I am not a physicist or involved in this field in any way so my review is aimed at the amateur who wants to know about the state of affairs in physics and specifically string theory.
5-0 out of 5 stars A timely and honest critique
I've been following the arguments made by Peter Woit against String Theory for quite some time, and it's a pleasure to be able to have them all in a single volume. His arguments are very persuasive, and his writing clear and to the point. This, however, is not a book that the general audience will find easy to follow. The earlier chapters recount the canonical story of the success of the particlephysics in the 20th century, and if you are familiar with that story you can safely skip these chapters. The later chapters are the really interesting ones, but unless you have at least some familiarity with theoretical particle physics and the modern mathematics, you might find yourself lost. Even with that caveat it is still possible to appreciate the central theme of this book: theoretical particle physics took a wrong turn somewhere in the late 70s and the early 80s, and has never been able to recover from this. Woit is appealing in this book to the practitioners in the field to be more honest with their assessments of the direction in which the theoretical particle physics is headed, and the lack of any meaningful progress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Excellent, but non-statisticians should start elsewhere
Gelman's book is an excellent and complete introduction to Bayesian methods. It covers a number of topics not touched by other intros I've read, and focuses much more on regression and ANOVA than other texts.
5-0 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets For An Intro To Bayes
Yes, it is an introduction to Bayesian methods. That means you have to have a very good understanding of classical statistics (at the level of Casella and Berger would be optimal) and then be willing to use the WinBugs program to further your knowledge.A great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is a good book, but not a bible of Bayesian analysis.

3-0 out of 5 stars Alright but not great
There are tons of textbooks on Precalculus like this one out there. Larson's is just another equally good textbook on the subject of calculus and Precalculus. However, I see no much uniqueness and innovations in any of the calculus books like this type. Richard Feynman, one of America's greatest physicists, once said most of the popular textbooks (on physics) were somewhat mediocre. I would recommend those who are aspired for an austere treatment of elementary mathematics, ie, pre-calculus and beginning calculus, to go for the book High-school mathematics by some Russian mathematicians. ISBN: 5030010114 This series is just so comprehensive with lucid explanations that every high school math teacher should take a look at it. It's both fun and benefitial to read books on math translated from another language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and highly recommended!
I also agree that this is one of the best textbooks about calculus available online. Everything is explained very well and the CD-ROM definitely makes it easier for the students. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the top two precalculus texts available
There is a mind-numbing sameness to precalculus and calculus textbooks, and this book is more of the same. The coverage starts with real numbers, exponents, expressions and solving equations. The basic principles of functions, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions, solving systems of equations, sequences, series, counting and probability, analytic geometry and limits follow this. I personally can do without the chapter on limits, when I teach precalculus, I am hard pressed to cover the other material. There is plenty of time to cover limits in calculus and it provides a better context. There are a large number of exercises at the end of each section and solutions to the odd-numbered ones are included in an appendix. As appears to be the case with many books, some of the exercises could have been left out with no decline in quality. At times I suspect there is the mathematical equivalent of an "arms race" to see how many exercises can be included at the end of a chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memory, thinking skills, creativity - great book
Mind Performance Hacks includes the usual fare of all memory books - various memory systems including the Major and Dominic Systems and variations of them. However, these authors go beyond the memory books by including many of the newer concepts in information processing such as mind mapping, dealing with cruft, ways of increasing creativity, capturing creative thoughts and using your creative self to resolve current issues. They also include some neat math tricks and techniques to quickly check the results of calculations for accuracy, estimate square roots, and other quick calculations.Unusual areas include better decision making and communications, bringing clarity to your life by working with emotional problems, and using meditation. And of course they include things to do to exercise your brain and keep it in tip top shape.Mind Performance Hacks: Tips and Tools for Overclocking Your Brain is highly recommended and was well beyond what I had expected from the title.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good as a textbook at all
Mathematics is charming and fun to read, only if it is presented in a thought-invoking way, as we see in the old-style classical math books. Sadly, the line has been broken here. In this book, the rich materials, since the book tries to encompass everything, were presented in a terribly dry and desperate way. The world is already full of miseries, so my friend, be nice to yourself and don't use this book as a textbook. Perhaps it better serves as a reference book, as some previous reviewer already pointed out.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book with deep insight in Math for UG students...
The first time I came across this book was when I was appointed Teaching Assistant for a course called "Biomathematics" at IIT. At first, I was bit scared looking at the size of this book. As days progressed, I realized the very deep insight it gives for the UG engg students. The practical illustrations complementing the concepts are the highlights of this book.

The book is very good with really good explanations and examples on descriptive analysis and inferential analysis.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins
On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Serious Excel 2000 Problem
The text book is great.I have many of Winston's other books andthey are all great. The Palisade stuff works just fine. However, the StatPro Addin that accompanies this text does not work with MS Excel 2000. I contacted the IT guy that the authors directed me to--he was stumped. He just gave up and suggested I return my book for a refund because he could not figure out it out. Again, the book is great but the StatPro Addin sucks! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for people who ask "but why..." at the end of every statement.
This book is absolutely excellent.I have looked through other stats books and lost interest immediately, but this book is written in such a way that it actually makes you want to learn the material. Rather than just telling you how to solve the problem, the authors inform you as to why learning it is necessary, and frequently give you real-life, interesting scenarios regarding how specific formulas are used by psychologists.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good moral support
My first impression was that this book was priceless since it really helped me through the first couple of chapters in the main text. At the beginning it goes into lengthy, step-by-step instructions. I may not have felt as confident in the class if it had not been for this supplement. Once I reached chapter 6 and 7 it was all over! There was not enough information to help me understand what the book was losing me on, I needed to seek private tutoring at this point. Occasionally I still go to the book in the hopes that it can pick me up and get me through the homework but it does not. These later chapters may be too complicated to go into in a study guide but what would a study guide be for if not walking you through the steps? I am glad I bought it, just dissappointed that it quit so early.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Statistics Resource
This is the very best statistics book that I have purchased (and I have purchased 5 others trying to help me get a grasp on this subject)! I would recommend it to anyone who needs an easy--to-read and easy-to-understand textbook on this difficult subject! I hope it helps you as much as it has helped me! ... Read more
