5-0 out of 5 stars BY FAR the best book on GR
I am currently on the 4th chapter of Carroll's "Spacetime and Geometry" and thus far I am amazed at how clear it is.Sure there is a lot of math in it however that also is very clearly explained. In fact, I think that Carroll explains the differential geometry material better than any mathematician has in any book on the subject. If you want to learn general relativity, there is no getting around the math; sooner or later you'll have to learn it.I'd suggest, especially if you are self-studying the subject, to rather pick up this book and go through it than pick up a more "elementary" text and a book on Riemannian geometry to look at later.
5-0 out of 5 stars A nice blend of the ideas of physics with mathematics
Kudos to Carroll.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book But Won't Get You To The Promised Land
My comments come with a few caveats.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!!!
This book is so bad. I have to use it for my Trig class, and it is very unclear, your lucky if you get an example in the book, and its just horrible. Formuals and concepts are BARELY explained. I hate this book. It makes you totally depend on your teacher for help, becasue this won't do you any good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Vague and Unclear
The textbook does not have central focus and all the formulas are not explained properly. The explanations are overbroad and vague and do not focus on the most important stuff. I would not recommend this textbook to any student. The two stars I give is for the nice paper it is printed on.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs improvement!
The explanations in this book could be more concise for students who have other assignments to study and fulfill. Throughout all my years in reading mathematical textbooks, this one does not head straight-to-the-point. The author spends more time introducing the subject than explaining how one step is derived from another in the examples, which leaves the student to spend time figuring how one concept abruptly transitions into the next. Aside from that, the exercise questions sometimes do not relate to the examples given in the book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book , worth to read
This book is designated as the textbook for our master's level management modeling class. The author concerntrated on the application of Microsoft Solver to solve various of optimazation problems that we freqently faced in the real business opreations. Overall, this is good book for entry-level management modeling study.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Clear, and To The Point
Yes, this book is expensive. Yes, the subject matter is rather dry. But if you don't expect dry subject matter, what are you doing in graduate school?
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid text that really teaches decision analysis
Since Lotus 1-2-3 burst onto the scene almost thirty years ago, spreadsheet software has been a vital tool in aiding business decision-making.There are many books offering instruction in learning to use a spreadsheet. Some books promise to teach business processes but end up delivering a course on basic spreadsheeting with only a passing nod to the business processes the student was expecting to learn.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Joy of Educational Remediation
This is one of the books I wished someone would write. My knowledge of science past and present was wanting and yet there wasn't a single book written for (and by) someone in the same boat.Bill Bryson has written such a book and brillantly over-achieved in the process. In the spirit of full disclosure, I like nearly everything Mr. Bryson has written. He can be pedantic and peevish when describing the less than admirable characters and circumstances he encounters but he's always very funny.Having said that, this physically ponderous tome made me wonder whether he could sustain his humor while at the same time educating the reader over all those hundreds of pages.Miraculously, his choice of anecdotes and pacing is spot on.It is extremely readable and there are wonderful factoids and "ah ha" moments on nearly every page.Life is short and this book is not but it's absolutely worth the trade-off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and engaging history of modern science
Well written and fun to read.Bill Brysons style really creates a nice true story, complete with the quirks and oddities of the charecters depicted.Highly recomended if you are interested in the history of science, or if you just enjoy a fun and educational read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read for the Basics
This is a good book. And, like all Bill Bryson's work, it is wonderfully written with such a sense of humor! Bryson is very good at finding facts as well as funny historical anecdotes and idiosyncrasies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best intermediate to advanced statistics textbook
This textbook is the best intermediate to advanced statistics textbook currently available on the market today. The Excel instructions are self explanatory and include every step needed to apply a particular statistical procedure. The instructions for calculating joint probability tables and constructing tree diagrams are excellent and easy to follow. The example problems include all the steps. The notation used is simple, direct and straightforward. It will not cause any confusion for a student. The handling ofp-values in hypothesis testing and multiple regression analysis is very well done.Based on my extensive teaching experience at the college and university level,I would highly recommend this book to a student, who is taking a statistics course that emphasizes applications, at the intermediate to advanced level. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful in the real world
I used the 7th edition in the business math class I took. The class was listed under the BUS designation, and was not intended for those above the 096 level in math. I took it at a community college as part of a certificate program. The first 4 chapters were review and the balance was the class. The chapters were well written and the practice problems useful. There are many problems for each chapter.
1-0 out of 5 stars An elementary approach to a college class
I am teaching a business math class and was issued this text book by the college. While reviewing the book I found it to be more confusing than helpful.I found the majority of the ideas presented in the book to be of common knowledge.Rather than presenting the concepts in the book in an analytical manner, the author uses a personal narrative to convey the ideas. The author introduces new concepts with successive chapters, but does not explain how these concepts are derived. The author explains concepts at face value, rather than explaining how the concepts come about and how to apply them to other situations outside of the ideal situation. The first 6 chapters or so, out of a total of 22, are a review of basic math skills starting with addition and subtraction of whole numbers and continue to basic uses of percents. In addition to those 6 chapters, more of the successive chapters become redundant and are not presented in a logical order.Integrated into the text are numerous amounts of extraneous articles that are meant to reinforce the underlying point, but instead simply add bulk and distraction to the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, easy to follow DVD!
What can I saw but this is an awesome book. I never did get past chapter one though because I found out that my previous grade was enough to meet a requirement so I figured why take it again? (Got a D+ originally, with a different book).

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK book
While its a very readable book I felt at times that the book leaved out some important details about certain topics. For example it gives an example and explains how to prove something yet gives no directions on how to disprove it, problems still require to do it. Another example later in the book is when it explains how to do something, shows an example, then mentions that some problems have multiple solutions but gives no directions on how to approach these kind of problems or how to make sure that you have all the solutions, you're on your own spending hours trying to put everything together.

3-0 out of 5 stars Computation problems = 5 stars; Proof problems = 1 star; True/False problems = 3 stars
This was the textbook that my school has been using for its first and second year Linear Algebra courses. I found it somewhat terse. It seems like it could be a great book for someone already familiar with linear algebra or the logic aspect of mathematics; I don't recommend it for anyone who is not very familiar with proofs. Fortunately, it doesn't lack examples of how to solve computation problems and solutions to the odd-numbered problems are provided in the back of the book. Unfortunately, when it comes to the proof problems, instead of just providing the reader with the answer like most other texts, the author will either mention a hint or refer the reader to the study guide (mine came with a disk which has to be installed on a computer), which could be a problem for readers not familiar with how to do proofs. Serving as a somewhat of a mediator between these two extremes are true/false questions which accompany each chapter in each section of the text. While those start out somewhat fun in the beginning, they can also get tiresome and repetive very quickly. The solutions to these, like the proofs, are not provided, but fortunately, all one has to do is read the text carefully in order to determine the appropriate response.
1-0 out of 5 stars underwhelmed
i'm not going to write 3 paragraphs about how much i love math, and what my fricking sat score was and how many A's i have as most nerds do when they review a math book.i am a math nerd too, but i'll keep the discussion to why i dislike the book (which will be short too, as i need to get back to studying it!)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Clearest and Most Useful Book on HLM for Longitudinal Studies
This is simply the best book for those analyzing longitudinal data (data measured at more than one time point).Singer's coverage of Hierarchical Linear MOdeling (HLM) is clear, well-written (sprinkled with humor, it's like a lecture by the most popular prof. at your school), and geared towards researchers who need their programs to run, not just learn the mathematical underpinnings. Singer and Willett (the coauthor, not listed above!) set the standard for presenting math/statistics book examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Breaking down complex analyses
This is an excellent book. Multilevel modeling and survival analysis are becoming increasingly important in psychological studies, but are pretty complicated procedures. Singer & Willet offer both a conceptual background and practical ways to do the analyses in a clear, understandable manner. The book is very readable and will be an important reference for future analyses!

5-0 out of 5 stars very clear and thorough
This book does a particularly good job of explaining the substantive meaning of the equations involved in multilevel modeling analyses. It spends a lot of extra time explaining what the equations mean in real world terms using examples from actual data sets.I teach a graduate level course on HLM and I much prefer this book to the Raudenbush & Byrk book because it not only does a better job of explaining the math (for graduate students less comfortable with statistics) but the chapters are also sprinkled with incredibly useful advice on actually running the analyses (getting them to converge, interpreting them, etc.)The Raudenbush & Bryk book probably does a slightly better job of presenting the equations, but it falls short on explanation and practical advice. If you were only going to buy one HLM book, I would start with this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It 's the only reason I passed Elementary Statistics
I had to teach myself statistics the first time around and this book deserves sole credit for my passing grade. Furthermore, I was able to use this book to teach my classmates and everyone passed the course, a first with that professor. I used the book as tutor at more than one school, as well. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for begining stats!
This text is very well written with detailed information broken down enough for anyone to understand, begining with explaining basic concepts, discussing how statistics can be used in specific simple scenarios. As you progress in the text, Triola utilizes the same scenarios by adding on to the complexity that is involved as you learn more. The sections within each chapter is broken down to explain major concepts without confusing the reader as you progress from chapter to chapter. As expected, definitions, theories, and helpful hints and good examples throughout the text enhance and reinforce the learning experience. Triola also incorporates a technology section at the end of the chaters, enabling you to use Excel or the TI-83 Plus to calculate a formula that would otherwise take you 20-30 minutes to do by hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful applied statistical text
This is an extremely useful book to have on your shelf. It provides easy to understand, applied concepts in multivariate stats, covering regression, logistic, SEM, and more. I find the syntax examples in SAS and SPSS to be especially helpful. When appropriate it also points you in the direction of more advanced references. I use it all the time and have found it to be invaluable.

3-0 out of 5 stars More appropriate for intermediate to advance readers
For someone who is new to probability theories and statistics, you might consider something else more basic and introductory.I've had classes in probability and number theories in college. This book stumped me.It could be retitled: Cartoons for Statisticians.Definitely not a book for beginners as it may have been intended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro to Stats
Stats isn't an easy thing to learn, but the Cartoon Guide to Stats is the easiest way to learn the basics. In particular it makes hypothesis testing clear.Hypothesis testing is often one of the more difficult areas for new stats students to understand.

Editorial Review

Young Robert's dreams have taken a decided turn for the weird. Instead of falling down holes and such, he's visiting a bizarre magical land of number tricks with the number devil as his host. Starting at one and adding zero and all the rest of the numbers, Robert and the number devil use giant furry calculators, piles of coconuts, and endlessly scrolling paper to introduce basic concepts of numeracy, from interesting number sequences to exponents to matrices. Author Hans Magnus Enzensberger's dry humor and sense of wonder will keep you and your kids entranced while you learn (shhh!) mathematical principles. Who could resist the little red guy who calls prime numbers "prima donnas," irrational numbers "unreasonable," and roots "rutabagas"? Not that the number devil is without his devilish qualities. He loses his temper when Robert looks for the easy way out of a number puzzle or dismisses math as boring and useless. "What do you expect?" he asks. "I'm the number devil, not Santa Claus." (Ages 10 to adult) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best children's books ever
This is without question one of the best children's books with a mathematical theme ever written. It is witty, charming and fun for children and actually teaches them some mathematics along the way. Not just the simple math of one and one is two; very complex ideas such as infinity, Fibonacci numbers, and Pascal's triangle are described in ways that elementary school children can understand. I couldn't put it down as I read through and marveled at the ability of the author to explain these mathematical concepts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story
This is a great book for everyone. My son 7, who is very interested in math loved it.The only drawback is the use of words like rutabaga instead of square root, unreasonable numbers instead of irrational munbers etc.If your child can live with that, this is a great learning tool. The dreams are cute fantasies.A nice way to incorporate math into a fictional book.I would recommend it for about 4th -6th grade, or younger if your child is particularily interested in math.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome [and educational] book!
When I first got this I thought was going to be very boring because it's about math. But once I started reading it I couldn't get my eyes off of it! It teaches different tricks to work out math problems in a fun way. If you or your kids are struggling in some areas in math as well as trying to find an entertaining book to read this is the perfect book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very appealing text
Chapters are disjoint at times, with no reference to similar concepts between them.Almost as if they were all written separately without any editing to tie them all together.
4-0 out of 5 stars Health Behavior and Health Education
This book is a must have for anyone in the health education field. It presents all major health behavior theories in a clear and understandable manner, applies theories to case studies at the end of each chapter, and offers a table summary of each theory's core constructs. The book is well written and with this third edition comes more updated research information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for a novice
Unarguably, Glanz et al know their theories. That, along with how comprehensive this book is, is as much of a positive review as I can give.My criticism of this book is not the expertise of Glanz et al. (They are quite obviously experienced intellectuals and are to be commended for their efforts.)My concern is:
