3-0 out of 5 stars Target Audiance - Choose Wisely
This book is certainly technically sound. That being said, I find the notation confusing and the text relatively inacessible. The book is likely a good selection for someone wanting to study the innermost mathematical details of modern signal processing.Unfortunately, the text spends less time on actual implimentation and usage than would be preferable for audiances focussed on real world applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent collection of signal processing math
this book is really good for a signal processing researcher.
5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Printing, not 2nd Edition.
I do not know about the contents of this book yet, but one thing I can tell is that the book is still in the first edition(unlike some review), but it's the second printing.

5-0 out of 5 stars As promised, on time

5-0 out of 5 stars first great treatment of generalized linear models
Nelder and Wedderburn wrote the seminal paper on generalized linear models in the 1970s. Since then John Nelder has pioneered the research and software development of the methods. This is the first of several excellent texts on generalized linear models. It illustrates how through the use of a link function many classical statistical models can be unified into one general form of model. This unification is helpful both theoretically and computationally. Various applications are presented in a clear manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure!
This series is a treasure to keep. The book is filled with great diagrams and very easy to understand language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
First is Knuth, second is Corman that brings the art of algorithms closer to earth. Then is Sedgewick. This book provides very good balance between theory and practice and lets the practitioners know that programming is a bit more than just writing "if" and "for" and that the art of algorithms is not only art but also science. This book evolved from early editions (Algorithms in C, 1990) and keeps the standard. These two volumes is the must for every serious programmer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent combination of books
Sedgewick's publisher (Addison-Wesley) has gathered his two books, Algorithms in Java, parts 1-5, into one resource for developers. Convenient, for you now have something that spans the most common algorithms encountered during computer programming. Logically, the combination of the two volumes is very coherent. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the nuts and bolts to put the thing together
I am working on my dissertation. This book got me out of my thinking chair and to my writing desk. The philosophical approach to qualitative research is very contemporary and will take us into whole new areas of research to improve and 'polish' humanity. My only objection is the cost.Does a book like this really have to cost over $60?Too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is just awesome. This opens up a whole universe for the qualitative researcher.
When one thinks of qualitaitve research one tends to think immediately of focus groups and face to face interviews - but increasingly with research the game is shifting toward online surveys that generate wonderful amounts of open-ended content, and research projects may also involve ethnography and content analysis to gain rich insights. In other words the focus of the professional must shift toward that quesiton: "what on earth do we do with all this 'soft' data?" Those verbatims, those observation notes... there's a huge amount of data waiting for interpretation. Can you systematically analyse it?
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
As an advisor of doctoral students, I keep several copies of this book on the shelf so I always have one on hand to loan to students. I find it a very useful resource for students who are planning qualitative research. ... Read more

The product was in good condition, but there was not a picture of the book.Owner says there was a review on the book, but I did not see it, and the ad was misleading. The ISBN number is what I searched under and it ended up being the wrong edition. It was my understanding this was the book on the internet which showed thrid edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math 65 An Incremental Development
My 12 year old daughter is just completing Math 65.WOW!5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect way to teach students from start to finish.
The Saxon math series kicked off with two wonderful books: 54 and 65. I was able to obtain 65 from one of my classmates because I needed some extra review in math. I LOVE IT! I used the book in 5th grade and had minimal struggle. The book starts with the simple concepts like addition and subtraction and slowly moves into fractions and missing number problems. Unlike the flop 76, rather than having surprise questions with no teaching, this book only throws surprise questions in after the concept was taught. The lessons are short making them relaxed rather than tense and the practices are short and to the point as well. Also, the mental math section at the beginning of each lesson helps students warm up on their addition, subtraction and whatever else skills they need to succeed. The appendix has a well written glossary and supplimental practice set for selected lessons to help endorse concepts. The books 150 lessons always have something new that'll help you; never an old concept. I highly reccomend this book whether you're just looking for some review or help or teach a class. Reccomended grade 4/5 for teachers. (Note: If you have to to get past the awful 76 for 6/7, use 65 and spare your students. You can always teach new concepts to keep them ahead.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars All you need to teach basic statistics
To effectively teach basic statistics, you need a textbook that is brief but thorough in explanation, detailed and incrementally repetitive with worked examples and has a large number of exercises for further practice. This book has all three and the solutions to the odd numbered exercises are included in an appendix. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good condition arrived really fast!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential to understanding biostatistics
I found this book clear, concise, and extremely helpful. I am not a numbers and theory person, but using this book in conjunction with strong classroom lectures helped me to understand the principles and methods tremendously. I see there are some negative reviews posted, but statistical computing can be a difficult process to learn, and I can understand how students might become frustrated if they lack the proper lectures to support this excellent teaching tool. I hope a few rotten classroom experiences will not discourage other customers from buying this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than most
I like it.I studied statistics and probability in the past, and find this book to be among the easiest to understand.Using this book requires having a basic understanding of the language and symbols of mathematics, as well as, the willingness to learn new mathematical concepts.Generally speaking, these concepts are not easy to learn.Rather than avoid the language of mathematics, it teaches statistics at a basic level.
1-0 out of 5 stars the "never again" book for biostatistics
Let me just start by saying I really like math, but this book did not help me to learn biostatistics at all.It doesn't explain the issues and equations very well and it has absolutly no answers in the back to check with yours, that's a whole other book...and that only has answers to the odds.Perhaps this would be a decent book for anyone who already has a handle on the subject and wants to learn more, but if this is your first exposure to biostatistics, like me, try another source to learn from, this book makes a difficult subject near impossible. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This textbook is TERRIBLE!
This book is written in unnecessarily complicated language and does not present information in a way that is easily understood. I teach graduate courses in quantitative methods and I made the mistake of ordering this book for one of my courses without reading it first. It was a disaster!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good-but wordy
The book was very helpful in helping me to finally learn Algebra. My complaint though is that the wording is too much and very confusing to understand for anyone who has a hard time with math.Get rid of the large pictures/graphs, study tips and objectives and maybe this book wouldn't be so big and heavy. The examples were what saved me because they were well defined and I wouldn't have understood what to do based on the explanations. Overall a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very very useful book
I have been using this book a lot, in the recent months, and I am finding it very useful. I am not *at all* an expert latex user, but I do have decent programming skills, and I usually use a computer for hours every day, so my IT skills are decent, overall. For writing technical documents I have been using for years a fairly dated version of ScientificWorkplace, but I am now slowly switching to do more and more in latex, which gives me greater flexibility. What I usually do now is writing my documents in ScientificWorkplace, and then taking care of formatting and other unusual features editing the documents in Latex, through a program called WinEdt. In almost all cases, when I am in trouble with some commands or options, I find a clear solution in this book. For this reason, if your profile sounds a bit like mine, I would highly recommend this book. The new (fourth) edition also includes extensive references to the "hyperref" package, which is very very useful to create great pdf output that includes links to footnotes/sections/equations etc., bookmarks, and active buttons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the best for absolute beginners, but great reference
For starting out in Latex, I recommend one of the many free online tutorials, such as the "not-so-short introduction to Latex".That will get you more than started. This book is a great add-on reference to that, and the level is just right: not too wordy, but easy to follow. It has much deeper coverage of how to do graphics and drawings, how to create a bibliography, how to create postscript and pdf files, etc, in addition to the basics, of course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brief, effective introduction to Latex
This is an ideal introduction to the TeX line of text formatting tools. It starts with a high level overview of the toolset. Then dives into document construction, then into tables, lists, mathematical formatting, and into user constructions and extensions for bibliographies, as well as other topics. PDF and Postscript formatting is covered. As well as AMS-TeX which is more extensions or mathematical formatting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent
This text, though very readable, teaches too much through example problems as opposed to actually explaining the information in the text. Presentation of some topics (chapter 6 particularly) was very poor. Some chapters were out of place (chapter 9 on differential equations, which should have been placed right before the last chapter).

5-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT buy earlier editions for class--NOT same problems.
Hey, this isn't a review. I just want to let you know that the people who claim that the fourth edition is the "same content" are trying to rip you off. The fourth edition is NOT the same as the fifth edition. The homework problems are NOT the same. If you get the fourth edition, you will not be able to complete your assignments for class if the instructor gives assignments out of the book.
3-0 out of 5 stars this coming from a student
Having taken 3 Calculus classes in sequence at my university with this book and having used one chapter of this book in my 4th math class that I am currently in (differential equations), I would say that I've used most of this book.Let's just say that this book needs a professor to go along with it.There's really not much of a chance, unless you're really smart, that you can only use this book with no other study aids and understand all of the concepts presented. This book really is made for your math professor to more fully explain.Having said that, I must add that the CD-ROM enclosed is GREAT.I guess if you don't have your professor to go over the finer details of some of the more vague concepts, then this is the next best thing. The sounds-like-a-grad-student voice that explains each chapter in great detail is easy to understand and makes most concepts pretty clear.I have to say that this CD-ROM is saving me on my midterm. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Greate Read and Interesting New Perspective on How things work in this Jungle
I got registered onto a few networking sites like Linkedin, Orkut and Hi5 in March and suddenly started thinking about term Network in social context. Being a computer engineer by profession and having worked on communication networks for last 5 years it was quite obvious to find parallels. And then I stuck upon this book. I must say i wasn't disapponted. Each Ideas has been built with convincing examples and is well supported by results from ongoing research being done by author. I would wait for him to write something on dissemination of information through social networks and network dynamics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different take on convergence
I can't say enough good things about this book. Jekins critiques "traditional" convergence theory about converging media and argues that the instigator of convergence is the need for new patterns of consumption, not production. Each chapter addresses how fans of a particular program reorganize their media experiences to better participate in the discussion, analysis and, at times, production of future episodes or events.
5-0 out of 5 stars The King of Culture
Henry Jenkins has a natural knack for taking any topic and making it instantly relatable and intensely gripping. I was privileged to have received a preview of part of this book before its publication, and I can honestly say that it's as entertaining as it is informative. Here he tackles completely new territory - the ever-evolving world of media and technology and how it impacts our society and the corporate world. This proverbial David & Goliath struggle for control of new media, the challenges of the inherent legalities, and the birth of new mediums; all of this complexity is laid out in the pages of 'Convergence Culture', and who better to guide us through this mish-mash landscape of new media than one of our foremost experts on media and popular culture?

3-0 out of 5 stars Average book
This book is not rigorous at all. If you are looking for rigor, look elsewhere. The proofs are very weak, and the example trite.
2-0 out of 5 stars Full of errors
This book has a lot of errors. Not only typos but math errors as well both in the text and the solutions manual. This is very frustrating. I'm switching to Casella's text.

4-0 out of 5 stars My goto stats book
This has been my goto stats book since I bought it for a class in 2002.It's a clear introduction to mathematical statistics.I use it to try to understand some of the more advanced concepts that I'm learning now, but, unfortunately, it is just an introductory book.It does have a lot of information in it, so I still rely on it pretty heavily.
