4-0 out of 5 stars A classic
In certain ways, this book has been both a bane and a boon to my career as a computational mathematician.Way back in 1989, I had the mixed experience of taking a course in Numerical Analysis from Brian Smith at the University of New Mexico.Prof. Smith taught that course exclusively from this book (actually, from the 2nd edition). As a college sophomore, I was terribly out of my depth, but I managed to do okay.Later, I had the opportunity to study under Gene Golub at Stanford, although I was certainly not one of his better students :)Naturally, Prof. Golub also taught pretty much exclusively from this book, by the way, he is a gifted mathematician and wonderful instructor, and a real gentleman.Between these experiences, I'd say I became extremely familar with the contents of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The standard reference
First, this isn't Numerical Recipes. If you're looking for cut&paste code, you're just looking in the wrong place. This is for people who need a deep understanding of the computational issues, and are going to put a lot of time into an implementation. It's for people who are completely at ease with linear algebra, standard matrix-oriented problems, and dense mathematical notation.
1-0 out of 5 stars Misbound
I ordered this book new but it was misbound, apparently during publication. In my first order, the book was missing the end of Chapter 12, had two indices, and had the final references buried in the middle of another chapter; the replacement book from Amazon had similar faults -- the end of chapter 12 was again missing, there was no index, and chapter four was in the place of the end of chapter 12.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the uninitiated
I bought this book hoping to learn about matrix analyis. I did not. Thisbook is simply a reference manual with plenty of theorems, axioms etc. withlittle explanation. They give it to you rough and row. NOT A SINGLE SOLVEDEXAMPLE, and not evensolutions for the exercises given in the book areprovided. If you intend to learn about matrix analysis, as I did, let notthe 5 stars review mislead you. Don't make the same mistake, this book isnot for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic reference for matrix analysis and linear alg
Horn and Johnson's MATRIX ANALYSIS is simply a masterpiece. You can findeach and every result in matrix analysis along with it's proof in thisbook. Look at their companion volume "Topics in Matrix Analysis"too. Some of these results cannot be found elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.... for the initiated
Horn and Johnson has written an excellent reference book onsomewhat-advanced linear algebra (from the point of view of an engineer). There's a lot of treasures in this book, but this book is NOT for beginninglinear algebra. Rather, it is written as a handy reference to review andlearn certain topics in linear algebra.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work
We used this book to prove a theorem in our studies that is directly related to my PhD thesis on spatial data mining and spatial statistics. This book is a master-piece.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This is one of my favorite books in my library on this subject. Also I have used this book for my class as main textbook along with "Iterative Methods for Solving Linear and Nonlinear Equations" by C. T. Kelley , which is another SIAM book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book for this subject. The book is easy to follow and Saad does a wonderful job ofillustrating with examples. This is a great textbook or a book for reference. This book does a particularly good jobwith Krylov methods and does a reasonable job with preconditioning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly this work will be a classic
This book is one of the very few mathematical, engineering, physics texts that I have come across in my 37 year career that stands out as a classic to be. I read the entire book and because it is so good, it is one of the few that I actually retained.
5-0 out of 5 stars smooth read.
I am mostly self educated in mathematics but still had no trouble with the reasoning and topics in this book. Each topic is intuitively and rigorously explained. Quaternions are a delight, are very interesting to work with, and are suprisingly productive in use. It is hard to find a good solid text on quaternions so this book would be well appreciated to anyone interested in the subject. Brush up on your matrix algebra first, especially determinants. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in applied mathematics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plainest, clearest introduction around
Latitude and longitude look simple enough, at first - just put your finger in the globe, and see which horizontal line crosses which vertical. When you start doing arithmetic, though, things get weird. Measuring longitude in degrees, 179+2=-179. In degrees latitude, 89+2=89, but the longitude changes! And, when you try to figure longitude precisely at the north pole, you run into a singularity. Believe me, you don't want to be in a plane when its navigation programs run into singularities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitively a classic
This is an excellent introductory book, although mostly oriented to people with a reasonably good mathematical background. Searle covers most, if not all, the matrix algebra that you may need to fully understand applications of mixed linear models. Chapters one to eight cover the essential operations (addition, multiplication, determinants, etc) as well as more advanced concepts (rank, canonical forms, inverse, etc). The rest of the book (chapters nine to fifteen) covers applications to statistics as well as advanced topics that can help you to understand how do some of the statistical packages work inside. The only mathematics book that I have read from cover to cover. Definitively a classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I would buy this book as a supplement to a "proper" math course on linear algebra, or for a course with applications in mind. The methods contained in this well written book are useful for advanced physics courses, stats classes, and many engineering applications and so on.You will find many good examples contained within with worked out solutions. My students really appreciate this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to matrix techniques
Unlike the Schaum's outline of linear algebra, which is more about the physical interpretation of matrices as vectors, this Schaum's outline is good for learning techniques of solutions that were meant for large matrices. It is aimed at the applied mathematician, since there are not very many proofs as exercises. Instead, the user is taught the various algorithms used to solve matrix problems. The guide starts with very basic operations such as matrix addition, subtraction, and dot products. It then moves on to methods of solution for finding the determinant, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and the functions of a matrix. What I particularly like about this guide is that in its more advanced section it shows in plain language how to implement singular value decomposition, the QR algorithm to compute eigenvalues, vector norms, LU decomposition, and other more advanced methods of solution that are not mentioned in basic linear algebra texts and are overloaded with theory in more advanced texts that lack practical examples. This book is an excellent companion to texts such as Trefethen and Bau's "Numerical Linear Algebra", since that book is short on worked examples and concentrates more on theory. The format of this guide is the same of most other Schaum's outlines- for each topic there are a few pages on motivation and the algorithms themselves, a section of worked problems, and a section of more problems with answers but not with complete solutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Book, but VERY Theoretical
Please be warned that this book is heavily designed toward matrix theory, rather than the algorithm itself. Therefore, if you are math-averse, you'd better look for other books that offers much lighter theory such as Numerical Recipes. However, if you are not deterred by Greek letters or complicated formulas and eager to learn the theories behind all of the algorithms, this book is for you. Although the author claims that the intended audience is "nonspecialist", I find that this book is most suitable to scientists or grad students, rather than common programmers.

5-0 out of 5 stars a classic - worth the wait
As a graduate student many years ago, I bought the last shelf copy of the first edition to Caswell's text on matrix population models for our bookstore. After 10+ years of using the book, both in research, and teaching, I'm glad I did. The 2nd edition is a lucid and masterful update, with several nice touches that should be appreciated by both newcomers and experienced modelers. In particular, some of the more turgid text from the first edition has been clarified, and expanded, and several new very important chapters have been added (yes, using branching process theory you can handle demographic stochasticity with matrix models). A superb book, made even better by the inclusion (at last!) of some basic MATLAB code for some of the more esoteric calculations. My only complaint (related perhaps to the 'code') is that the many good 'worked examples' are not treated more fully. I'd have liked to have seen the actual matrices involved, or some further detail, in some cases, rather than a figure or table summarizing the results. However, a minor complaint - perhaps easily solved by a companion website with code for each example in the book 9something I'm probably going to do on my own, but should be standard these days for any technical text).

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and accessible introduction to population modeling
There is often a false dichotomy drawn between differential (or difference) equation models of populations and agent-based (artificial life, individual-based, configuration) models.Agent-based models canrepresent more of the complexity of biological systems at the expense ofanalytical tractability.Matrix population models form a bridge betweenthe two approaches.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on this topic!
This book is an expansion of the author's lecture notes "Perturbation Bounds for Matrix Eigenvalues" published in 1987.I have used both versions for my students' projects. The book under review centers aroundthe themes on matrix inequalities and perturbation of eigenvalues andeigenspaces. The first half of the book covers the "classical"material of majorisation and matrix inequalities in a very clear andreadable manner. The second half is a survey of the modern treatment ofperturbation of matrix eigenvalues and eigenspaces. It includes lots ofrecent research results by the author and others within the last ten years. 5-0 out of 5 stars A refreshingly clear introductory text on Lie groups
I rarely have time or feel strongly enough about a text to write a review. However, with Hall's book, I feel compelled. After struggling with the rather compact sixth chapter of Wulf Rossman's book on representations of Lie groups and algebras during a course on representation theory (the first five chapters were assumed), I turned to this one, and boy, am I ever glad I did. 5-0 out of 5 stars AT LAST, LIE GROUPS & ALGEBRAS I CAN UNDERSTAND!!

5-0 out of 5 stars essential guide to matrix calculus
I am unusually lucky to get around the typesetting problems described by other reviewers: I was translating the book into Russian a few years ago based on the authors' LaTeX files, so I am not even sure I saw the Wiley book printed. I also was able to receive the author copy from the Russian publisher for free. Of course Wiley's price of $300 is ridiculous! The authors complained about it, too, seeing this as an objective obstacle for dissemination, but there is little they could do about the price.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bad typesetting reviews are not exaggerating
I have read the bad reviews regarding the typesetting of this book and I thought they were exaggerating. Nevertheless, I have borrowed this book (old edition/hardcover) from the University library and I thought that buying it was worthwile. When I ordered the book I found out that the book quality was even worse than expected. The typesetting is worse than a photocopied book; I even thought that this was not an authentic copy but a cheap one from a Banana country. Nevertheless, when you open to read the book pagesare coming out. The hardcover edition price -$300$- is ridiculous. I am a postoctoral fellow in engineeringand I cannot afford more than $100 for a book. The $80 dollar price is not justified for that bad typesetting. This is a very helpful book for a graduate engineering student but I doubt that I will recommend it for buying. I will have to think seriously about buying anotherbook from Wiley piblishers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too bad!
I was surprised to learn about the poor quality of typesetting in the paperback (second?) edition. I reviewed the book for JASA, when it first appeared, and, over the years, I've used it many many times. It is really a remarkable book, for allof us who need to deal with matrices in our everyday research work.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have just read part I of the book (table of contents below), and I like it very much. So many information, on so few pages. Everything is threated in FULL generality, and proves are included for the main theorems. This book has also an excellent encyclopedia function, as it contains the main properties of anything that one can think of. 4-0 out of 5 stars A classic compilation of results in this field.
This book is not really a review of matrix theory; the focus is on inequalities, mainly for PD matrices, convex functions and eigenvalue problems. The book tries to present a general framework, a-la Hardy, but isnot quite as successful. Nevertheless, if you need to find that elusiveinequality that you saw in undergraduate, this book will likely contain it.This book should be on every mathematical researcher's shelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars clear and careful exposition
The definitions and derivations are clear and carefully explained. The text starts with the basics, and moves at a brisk and comfortable pace to quite advanced matrix operations and properties. Quite a lot of numerical examples are given throughout the text as examples/counter-examples to clarify misconceptions and surprising properties of a matrix (such as the presence of divisors of zero). There are a large number of exercises included, and the later ones in a section are usually quite challenging and enlightening; many of them extend the main text substantially without increasing the length of the exposition. Some of the matrix and vector space notations used are dated (circa 1973). But otherwise this is a great text to get up to speed with and to lay a solid foundation for more advanced matrix texts like Gantmacher and Horn/Johnson. ... Read more
