5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction
Modulo some sections that require more mathematical maturity, this book gives a straightforward introduction to the mathematics behind Fermat's Last Theorem that is accessible to the first or second year graduate student in mathematics. This is due not only to the excellence of the presentation, but also the many problems at the end of each chapter, making this book qualify more as a textbook than a monograph. Its perusal will give the reader an appreciation of the role of elliptic curves in the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. Readers familiar with the applications of elliptic curves will find another impressive one in this context. It is a sizeable book filled with many definitions and theorems, so only a few features that make the book stand out will be mentioned.

1-0 out of 5 stars Neither recreational nor instructive
I quite agree with the reviewer from Massachusetts.2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint-hearted
Although the author comes over as arrogant,I am, after several years, warming to this book. With concentration and very careful reading I have found that much can be gained from it. It is humorous, witty and iconoclastic. Reading a page here and a paragraph there,I have learned what Mordell's theorem is,almost understood a single paragraph proof of the prime number theorem, and more maths besides. The book makes me want to take up number theory. Anyone out there want to finance me through further university studies?

1-0 out of 5 stars Assumes Far More Than High School Math
This is grossly inaccurately advertised. In the introduction the author states that high school math plus an acquaintance with a first course in linear algebra is sufficient to understand the general flow. This is silly at best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed Axiomatic Development of Transfinite Numbers - Not Suitable as Introduction
Georg Cantor's final and logically purified memoir on transfinite numbers was published in the late 1890s.This Dover reprint is the 1915 English translation by the mathematician Philip E. B. Jourdain; it also includes a lengthy, technically diffcult introduction by Jourdain.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for those interested in Riemann's
Zeta function. This book contains a lot of application, theory, and, to my surprise, several practice problems at the end of each section to maximize the learning experience. The chapters are concise and the mathematics is relatively easy follow for those with some experience in special functions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another application of elliptic curves...
The successful proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Andrew Wiles was probably the most widely publicized mathematical result of the 20th century. And once again, among their numerous other applications, elliptic curves are employed in the proof. The book is a compilation of articles written by first-class mathematicians, the reading of which will give one a thorough understanding of the proof, along with an overview of some very interesting topics in number theory and algebraic geometry. The reader who undertakes an understanding of the proof already no doubt has a substantial amount of 'mathematical maturity', and no review, no matter how complete, would influence greatly such a reader. Suffice it to say then that this book is excellent, and even a reader interested solely in elliptic curves and modular forms could benefit greatly from the reading of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great?!?!
This book might be good if you like number theory. But if you're an analyst who hates number theory or a brick-layer, then this book is probably not meant for you. I hope you found this review helpful. Have a nice day.

Ore's book is an excellent introduction to the fascinating topic of number theory. He takes his time explaining the history of numbers and goes into Euclid's algorithm so smoothly you hardly realize what you've learned. He discusses prime numbers and I was particularly delighted to see diophantine equations explained with lots of examples and an easy to follow method. The book is filled with interesting concepts, lots of examples, and good problems to do on your own.5-0 out of 5 stars A book for practically anyone

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid intermediate introduction to elliptic curves
I compare this book to Rational Points on Elliptic Curves (RP) by Tate and Silverman, and The Arithmetic of Ellipitic Curves (AEC) by Silverman.
4-0 out of 5 stars A clear, concise introduction to elliptic curves
I used this book as my main resource when writing my undergraduate dissertation on elliptic curve group structure. Although once I wanted to have a more in-depth look into any particular subject I had to chase up the references, this book made an excellent starting point. This book is a solid, clear introduction to the subject, which can be easily understood even by maths undergrads in the later years of their study (though if you're not a mathematician you may find it hard going!!) I found it be the clearest textbook on elliptic curves I came across, especially as it doesn't assume any background knowledge of algebraic geometry.

3-0 out of 5 stars It might be a good book for a mathematic student but not a good one for an engineering student.
It might be a good book for a mathematic student but not a good one for an engineering student. There are too many mathematic jargons with very limited explanations. Many notations just take for granted that the readers have already known them. It is very hard for people who have limited math background. Moreover, there are so many editorial errors in the current version. I would suggest that the author put a mathematical symbol/sign index at the end of the book and make it easier for the readers to look for their meanings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary Book
Ever since I first read about the prime number theorem, I have been roaming the mathetmatical landscape, looking for the best proof of this result. I believe this book has it. It's not the simplest or the shortest proof, but it gives the deepest understanding of why the prime numbers behve like they do. In addition to this, it shows you the historical perspective in these proofs. All too often today math books give one short and slick proofs that leave you wondering how on earth they came up with it. In this book, however, one can almost feel the thoughts going through Riemann and Dirichlet's heads as they came up with the theorems. This book also has the proof of Dirichlet's theorem and Vinogradov's partial proof of the ternary goldbach conjecture. The vinogradov and following sections are considerably harder, partly because they were not written by Davenport himself. Anyway, if you're serious about Analytic number theory and how mathematicians think, this books needs to be on your bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good historical approach to Analytic Number Theory
I like this book because it gives you a good understanding of where the difficulties in the subject are. It takes a historical approach, following more or less the same steps that the original discoverers of these results took. Today we have very slick proofs for many of these results, and it is sometimes hard to understand why it took so long to discover them in the first place, but this book will give you this understanding; Dirichlet in particular practically had to invent Analytic Number Theory to prove his theorem on primes in an arithmetic progression. 4-0 out of 5 stars how to make random numbers
Tezuka offers a pragmatic approach to the generation of random numbers in a uniform distribution. While there is certainly a decent amount of theory in his book, it is primarily for someone who needs to code a generator. And who might not be so concerned about understanding the underlying aspects of number theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Entertaining Textbook

Never has a course of study gotten me so interested in mathematics as this course by Dr. Tattersall. This particual book has given me incredible insight into the fascinating world of numbers and has enabled me to think about mathematics as both a historical progression and a personal endeavor. It envolopes the student and holds on right through the semester.4-0 out of 5 stars Who knew math could be such a roller-coaster ride?
I took Dr. Tattersall's number theory class in the fall of 1998, for which we used a bound draft of this text. Its composition matches his frenetic and exhilarating lecture style, both in the presentation of the materialand the frequent side-trips into math history. If you are math-mad, it'sworth buying for fun, and if you must buy it for a class, it's worthhanging onto after that last exam. Good stuff! ... Read more
